KILLER QUEEN In this high-octane, action-packed spy thriller, Charlize Theron pulverises half of Eastern Europe trying to complete her mission. WORDS CHRIS WASEY RRELEASE DATE 11 AUGUST / Director David Leitch / Starring Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella / Genre Action, Mystery, Thriller

O

scar winner, character actor, most beautiful woman in the world - Charlize Theron has been called many things. With Atomic Blonde, she can add “rampaginginternational-super-spy” to the list. Based on the Cold War-set graphic novel The Coldest City, Atomic Blonde sees Theron star as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 spy dispatched to Germany on the eve of the Berlin Wall’s collapse. Her mission: track down those responsible for assassinating undercover western agents. Between partnering with “feral” Berlin

station chief Percival (James McAvoy) and passionate encounters with French operative Delphine (Sofia Botella), Broughton begins decimating enemy safe houses searching for the truth. Director David Leitch delivers a tone similar to his work on 2014’s John Wick, but turned up to 11. Every punch reverberates through the screen, every bullet fired with deadly intent – furious, neon-soaked, and hyper-real, with long handheld shots and choreography that make Bourne look almost child-friendly. After an Academy Award-winning physical transformation for Monster, Theron has had supporting roles in a range of action vehicles. But after her recent scene movie-stealing turn as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, Theron in this action lead is guaranteed to be a brutal spectacle.

ATOMIC BLONDE

FEMME FATALES MILLA JOVOVICH A breakout role as Leeloo in The Fifth Element led to Jovovich becoming the face of the Resident Evil franchise.

ANGELINA JOLIE The most prolific and varied female action star in history. Gone In Sixty Seconds, Lara Croft, Sky Captain, Mr & Mrs Smith, Beowulf, The Tourist, Wanted, Salt…

SIGOURNEY WEAVER The original female action star. Fronting the Alien series, Ripley was the first ass-kicking heroine, going on to lead a global franchise in a genre ruled by men.

ZOE SALDANA The most recent entry to the list. Leading roles in Avatar (as Neytiri) and Star Trek (as Uhura) made her name, but she’s now best known as Gamora, Guardians Of The Galaxy’s “deadliest woman in the galaxy”.

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS

16 July / August 2017

RELEASE DATE 2 AUGUST / Director Luc Besson / Starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Rihanna / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

B

ased on the groundbreaking graphic novel Valérian and Laureline, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets is a sci-fi action-adventure that has its sights set on becoming this summer’s most epic journey to the stars. From celebrated French director Luc Besson comes a truly out-ofthis-world vision of life in the 28th century. Expect technological marvels, supercharged neon vistas, strange and alien faces, and forces far greater than Earth has ever known. Sights beyond your wildest imagination await. While Valerian has proven to be a lifetime in the making for Besson, the scifi auteur’s filmography has undoubtedly helped define the genre. With films such as Nikita, The Fifth Element, and Lucy, cinemagoers have been transported into unique visions of Earth and beyond. Valerian, however, promises to be his most mesmerising and mythological effort yet. With a proposed budget of €197 million, it’s the costliest French feature film to ever grace cinema screens, and arguably the most ambitious. Since its original publication back in 1967, Valérian and Laureline has shaped the work of several high-profile artists, writers, and filmmakers, yet due to the comic series’ grand scale and nuanced lore, never before has a direct adaptation been undertaken . . . until now. In the 28th century, mankind has spread throughout the universe. Special operatives are tasked with maintaining order within the human territories, two being Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne). Their next

mission lies within the heart of Alpha, a diverse and vibrant metropolis shaped by the convergence of countless species. Knowledge, intelligence, and contrasting cultures shape and drive the city forward. Yet despite the peaceful surface, a dark and destructive mystery threatens to tear the City of a Thousand Planets apart – and so begins a race against time. Valerian and Laureline must identify the threat within and strike first. If they fail, not only will the wonders of Alpha crumble to rubble, but the universe will be thrown into a bleak and despairing future. Alongside a dramatic narrative, Besson’s striking visual flair is once again on display. This time however, the spectacle is far greater than ever before. Prepare to journey from tightly-packed space flotillas to sprawling landscapes of sand, fire, and flora. Robotic bodies whir through towering electronic archives, and humungous snarling beasts rip through ancient forests and course through vast, unexplored waterways. Gear up to traverse the universe and its many contrasting planets. Besson’s fondness for ass-kicking action clearly hasn’t faded, either. Fists will fly and weapons will be drawn as our heroes desperately strive to uncover the marauding forces which threaten their existence. With a truly unique all-star cast, a visionary director, and beloved and inspired source material rich with wonder, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets has all the materials necessary to forge a space opera that won’t soon be forgotten. Its name may not carry the same sci-fi clout as mega franchises such as the Star Wars and Star Trek sagas, but Besson is looking to make a sudden and forceful impact. When the dust settles will the journey have been as exciting and astonishing as promised? There’s only one way to find out.

A CELESTIAL CAST VALERIAN Strong, brave, and loyal, Valerian is a kind-hearted and formidable warrior often confronted with insurmountable odds. His goal is to ascend the military ladder, but will his loyalty to his superiors be his downfall?

LAURELINE Determined and highly intelligent, Laureline has been alongside Valerian for two years. The pair are one of the most respected partnerships in the army, with a 100% mission success rate. Will they finally fall from grace?

BUBBLE Played by pop sensation Rihanna, Bubble is a shapeshifting entertainer whose unique power may well prove invaluable when trying to infiltrate the darkness spreading throughout Alpha.

COMMANDER ARÜN FILITT Clive Owen stars as Valerian and Laureline’s commanding officer. The strong and dedicated leader’s guidance has often proved invaluable.

NATURE BITES BACK Caesar is back! Leading an army of apes to battle the humans that created him. Who will prevail and rule the Earth in this quest for freedom? WORDS JEN GARMSTON

RELEASE DATE 11 JULY / Director Matt Reeves / Starring Andy Serkis, Judy Greer, Woody Harrelson / Genre Action, Adventure

H

umans have once again tipped the balance with nature and created an uncontrollable monster seeking revenge on its creator. Simian Flu has decimated the population and the world is overrun with genetically-modified chimps, but who is it that needs saving? The director who brought us Cloverfield and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, Matt Reeves, returns for a climactic third chapter of this CGI spectacular. The latest instalment follows on directly from where we left off in the last film with tensions continuing to rise between Caesar (Andy Serkis) and the humans he once lived alongside. Woody Harrelson

joins the cast in this postapocalyptic wasteland to portray a heartless villain; a bloodthirsty, warmongering Colonel who leads the human army to keep a divide between man and beast. After the apes receive a crushing blow, Caesar begins a journey to take vengeance on his oppressors. The war has begun. Caesar and the Colonel must now face each other in an epic showdown to determine if the world will be run by humans or become a planet of the apes.

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES 18 July May / August 2017 / June

Andy Serkis The English actor, director, and author is known as “the king of mo-cap”. Motion-capture is a highly-skilled way of recording an actor’s movements and facial expressions in front of a green screen. The movement is then translated to computer generated images to create richly detailed animated characters onscreen. Serkis is most famous for his role as Gollum in The Lord Of The Rings. Much to the disappointment of his peers, critics, and fans, Serkis has never been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards as his incredible digital performances, as Gollum or Caesar, did not qualify. Next year, Serkis will make his directorial debut and star as Baloo in his dark, groundbreaking, mo-cap adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book.

A GREATER ESCAPE Christopher Nolan takes the plunge with an audacious, sweeping war epic that, if successful, will cement his reputation as one of Hollywood’s greats. WORDS LEE CURTIS RELEASE DATE 21 JULY / Director Christopher Nolan / Starring Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy / Genre History, Thriller, War

T

he year is 1940. 400,000 allied soldiers are stranded in northern France, a mere 26 miles from British shores. With their backs to the sea and their enemy closing in, they need a miracle. Christopher Nolan’s wildly imaginative, high-concept cinema spectacles have immersed us in fantastical dreamscapes and delivered thought-provoking meditations on memory, time, and the theoretical science of space travel, but it’s his fact-based retelling of a real-life war story that’s his most ambitious and extraordinary blockbuster yet. Chronicling a pivotal moment in

the Second World War, Dunkirk tells the story of Operation Dynamo, the incredible evacuation attempt where courageous civilian sailors joined the war effort to rescue the stranded soldiers from their perilous situation. Dunkirk is a film without a singular hero as Nolan turns to an ensemble of veteran stars (Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and Tom Hardy) and fresh-faced talent, who together offer a haunting reminder of just how young and inexperienced these soldiers were, to tell a multi-perspective story of the remarkable war heroes who, whether on ocean or sky, beach or landing ground, never surrendered.

PRACTICAL MAKES PERFECT Physical effects, sets, and on-location shooting ground Nolan’s vision in reality, and as he sets his sights on his most immersive film yet, we take a look at his best practical effects.

THE DARK KNIGHT THE TRUCK FLIP This breath-taking moment of cinema was all practical. With a real 18-wheeler, a giant piston, and a brave stuntman behind the wheel, the crew actually flipped that truck.

INCEPTION - THE HALLWAY FIGHT Nolan and his team created a giant revolving set to capture the film’s iconic zero-gravity fight sequence.

INTERSTELLAR From models of the spacecraft to on-set projections of the CGI images so the actors had a real-time reference, it’s incredible how many practical effects were used on this colossal space odyssey.

In order to beat Storm, McQueen must learn from the best car simulator trainer, a strong female car named Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo). The story isn’t over. Return to the enigmatic dystopia of Blade Runner for a new chapter in one of cinema’s most beguiling sci-fi worlds. WORDS LEE CURTIS RELEASE DATE 6 OCTOBER / Director Denis Villeneuve / Starring Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Jared Leto / Genre Sci-Fi, Thriller

B

lade Runner is one of the most influential and equivocal sci-fi films of all-time. Under Ridley Scott’s meticulous direction, the genre-blending tech noir drips with atmosphere, intoxicates with its rich visuals, haunts with an ethereal score, and remains one of cinema’s most unique and richest sensory experiences. Fresh from directing Arrival – arguably the most complete sci-fi film since Scott adapted Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – Denis Villeneuve enters the rain-

BLADE RUNNER 2049

soaked, smog-choked dystopia for a much-anticipated sequel. Set thirty years after the original, Blade Runner 2049 follows LAPD Officer K on a journey to find missing blade runner Rick Deckard after he unearths a long-buried secret that could plunge the decaying world into chaos. Blade Runner 2049 boasts an incredible line-up of creative talent as the visionary director turns to wildly imaginative cinematographer Roger Deakins, note-perfect composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, and an ensemble of Hollywood’s leading stars to capture the tone of the original film. But this is no mere replicant. Villeneuve promises to leave his mark on the sci-fi world and deliver a sequel that, like its legendary predecessor, will not be lost in time.

One of A Kind Though his earlier films drew critical acclaim, including a Best Foreign Language Film nomination for beguiling mystery Incendies, it wasn’t until 2013 when Denis Villeneuve exploded onto the scene with the gloriously intense Prisoners. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. Psychological thriller Enemy was quickly followed by Sicario, a whiteknuckle ride through the violent world of Mexican drug cartels. His most recent film, Arrival, is a heartbreaking, imaginatively told, and expertly constructed story of language, morality, grief, and time. With a near-perfect catalogue of films and exciting projects on his horizon - including Blade Runner 2049 and the famously unfilmable Dune - it’s only a matter of time before this visionary director joins the pantheon of all-time greats.
