PICTURE PURR-FECT

Prepare for the dazzling stage spectacle of Cats brought to the big screen, featuring Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, and many more feline friends. WORDS JIM ROBERTS RELEASE DATE 20 DECEMBER / Director Tom Hooper / Starring Judi Dench, James Corden, Francesca Hayward / Genre Comedy, Fantasy, Musical

B

ased on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and the beloved Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Cats depicts a clan of felines called Jellicles, based in London’s cobbled streets and alleys. Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables) brings the tribe to life through a combination of CGI, live-action, and “digital fur technology.” On the night of the Jellicle Ball, Old Deuteronomy (Judi Dench) will pick one cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and

be reborn into a new life. She’s not short of contenders, with Bombalurina (Taylor Swift), Rum Tum Tugger (Jason Derulo), and Victoria (Royal Ballet Principal Francesca Hayward) showing off their skills. Cat criminal Macavity (Idris Elba) watches from the gutters, ready to cause chaos, while comedy relief is supplied by James Corden and Rebel Wilson. A stunning exhibition of song and dance is promised wherein Hooper can call upon the talents of Hamilton's Tony-winning choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler. And of course, the Jellicle Ball wouldn’t be complete without the hit song “Memory,” performed on the big screen by outcast cat Grizabella (Jennifer Hudson). Get ready to purr in amazement, delight, and even a little fright.

CATS FROM ALL CORNERS OF ENTERTAINMENT This exciting ensemble comprises cats from all entertainment backgrounds: MUSIC Lloyd Webber has played a big role in the adaptation, including writing a brandnew song. Taylor Swift jumped straight in from a stadium tour, and Jennifer Hudson plans to stand cat hairs on end with her passionate performance.

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS SEASON 7 Dave Filoni’s fan-favourite Clone Wars series will arrive in February to tie up all the loose ends left untethered when Disney originally acquired Star Wars in 2012. It was one of the few Lucas-era properties to stay canon alongside the movies, finally becoming complete with this final season.

THE MANDALORIAN The first-ever live-action Star Wars show centres on a lowly bounty hunter hailing from the planet of Mandalore. Arriving day and date with Disney’s new streaming service, Disney +, it’s pitched as a space-set western, with Pedro Pascal’s titular character described as “Clint Eastwood-esque”.

OBI-WAN KENOBI This year’s D23 conference finally announced that Ewan McGregor would be reprising his role from Episodes I-III as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Taking place in the gap between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope, the series is yet to have an official title but will debut some time in 2021.

NO ONE’S EVER REALLY GONE

The Skywalker saga officially comes to a close this December, with the final clash between Kylo and Rey bringing old enemies back to the fore. WORDS AARON POTTER RELEASE DATE 19 DECEMBER / Director J.J. Abrams / Starring Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

A

long time ago in a galaxy far, far away the thought that we’d ever get more big-screen Star Wars entries seemed like a sheer impossibility. Seven years after Disney swooped up the rights to George Lucas’ universe, however, we now find ourselves at the precipice of a story over forty years in the making. Episode IX sees what’s left of The Resistance recuperate following the events of The Last Jedi. The First Order

now vastly outnumber those willing to make a stand, and with both Han and Luke gone, the onus to make things right falls to Rey, Finn, and Poe. The Rise Of Skywalker will be the ultimate test of patience and earnestness for our heroic trio, as enemies long since thought dead make a return. But how does The Emperor’s comeback feed into Kylo Ren’s spiralled downfall and is his chance of redemption really gone for good? All these questions and more will be answered as The Force Awakens alumni J.J. Abrams returns to the director’s chair to end his trilogy. Expect epic lightsaber duels, thrilling space battles, and the end of an era in the concluding chapter of the Skywalker Saga.

LITTLE WOMEN, BIG VOICE

“My favourite literary hero ine is Jo March. It is hard to overstate what she meant to a small, plain girl calle d Jo, who had a hot temper and a burning ambition to be a writer,” the Harry Potter author told the NY Times.

Patti Smith

In The Paris Review, the punk rock icon wrote: “Per haps no other book provided a greater guide, as I set out on my youthful path, than Louisa May Alcott’s most beloved novel, Little Women… I recognis ed myself, as if in a mirror. ”

Rachel from Friends

A book swap between Rac hel and Joey results in the Italian actor delving into the nov el, only to find it a little emotionally fraught. What would a sane man do with such a book? Yep, hide it in the freezer.

Louisa May Alcott’s seminal 19th-century novel gets the big screen (and big-named) adaptation with which to inspire a whole new generation of little women and little men, the world over. WORDS ROBB SHEPPARD

released a century and a half ago, the themes are just as relevant today, where issues of equal pay, outdated gender roles, and the #MeToo movement are agendised to demand and facilitate change. On directorial and screenplay duties is Greta Gerwig; the writer and director whose first solo feature, Lady Bird, was showered with Best Picture and Best Screenplay nominations throughout 2017’s award season. Gerwig writes women like no other and could well be Alcott’s spiritual successor, which makes

this adaptation seem fated. What’s more, the cast is well worth getting excited for: Saoirse Ronan teams up with Gerwig again after taking on the lead in Lady Bird; Florence Pugh continues to rack up an impressive résumé following Fighting With My Family and Midsommar, while man-ofthe-hour Timothée Chalamet provides the swooning opportunities. Sprinkle on some Laura Dern, Emma Watson, and Meryl Streep and you’ve got a cast that’s worth admission alone.

aul Feig and Emma Thompson are no strangers to Christmas movies. The Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters director helmed the angsty Christmas comedy Unaccompanied Minors back in 2006, while the Academy Awardwinning actress and writer Thompson starred in British classic Love Actually three years earlier. Now they’ve teamed up for another potential classic, set against a snowy London and inspired by the music of George Michael. Appearing in her first film role since the conclusion of Game Of Thrones,

THE MOST WONDERFUL ROMANTIC TIME OF THE YEAR BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY (2001) Renée Zellweger stars as the loveable Bridget, a young woman looking for love. And no debates on whether this is a Christmas film or not, please: it begins with an ugly Christmas jumper and ends with a snog in the snow!

LOVE ACTUALLY (2003)

Emilia Clarke stars as down-on-her-luck department store elf, Kate. Having battled a life-threatening illness the Christmas before, Kate has just about lost all hope when WHAM! she runs into all-round good Samaritan Tom, played by Henry Golding who reunites with Paul Feig from last year’s A Simple Favour. Tom helps Kate turn her life around and rediscover that special something she lost the previous festive season. Featuring several previously unreleased George Michael songs, Last Christmas also stars Golding’s Crazy Rich Asians co-star Michelle Yeoh as Kate’s unsympathetic manager and Emma Thompson as Kate’s eccentric mother. With so much talent involved and new music from the late George Michael to look forward to, it’s sure to be a sweet, side-splitting treat.

Like Last Christmas, Richard Curtis’ 2003 British classic also starred Emma Thompson, who reminded us that “True love lasts a lifetime”. Somebody, pass the tissues!

THE HOLIDAY (2006) As star-studded as Love Actually, Nancy Meyers’s The Holiday sees Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz swap homes over the Christmas season after painful break-ups. Luckily, Jude Law and Jack Black are ready to sweep them off their feet.

THE KING’S MAN

LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN

Matthew Vaughn turns back the clock on his Kingsman franchise to tell the story of its origins as one man rushes to prevent a war that will wipe out millions. WORDS HARRY FAINT RELEASE DATE 14 FEBRUARY / Director Matthew Vaughn / Starring Ralph Fiennes, Harris Dickinson, Gemma Arteton / Genre Action, Adventure, Comedy

I

n 2014 we discovered The Secret Service. Then we saw them go global three years later in The Golden Circle. Now, before the eagerly-anticipated third film completes the trilogy, director Matthew Vaughn departs Eggsy and Harry Hart’s tale to take us back to the genesis of the world’s first independent intelligence agency long before they become the smooth-talking secret agents they are today. In this period film, a group of history’s worst villains unite to wage a war that will kill millions. To stop them, the Duke of

Oxford tailors a team of his own. Ralph Fiennes stars as Duke T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, who sets out to take down these terrible tyrants by assembling a team of elite agents that includes Gemma Arterton’s Polly, Djimon Hounsou’s Shola, and relative-newcomer Harris Dickinson as his new recruit Conrad. The film boasts an all-star ensemble support cast who bring notorious historical figures to the screen including Rhys Ifans as the famously unkillable Rasputin. The King’s Man is the first of new stories set within the Kingsman universe as Matthew Vaughn recently announced plans for an eight-hour television spin-off as well as promising to give fans a fitting farewell to Harry Hart and Eggsy with a final film in his Kingsman trilogy.

COMIC BOOK GUY Matthew Vaughn has taken the helm of several comic book adaptations over the years. Here are some of the films that successfully went from strip to screen:

KICK-ASS (2010) Dave Lizewski is just an ordinary teenager who dons a suit to fight crime and becomes a YouTube sensation, drawing the attention of the city’s criminal underworld.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (2011) This first prequel in the series explores the start of the rocky relationship between Charles Xavier and Magneto, and the origins of their group of mutants.

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE (2014) On release from prison, Gary “Eggsy” Unwin is recruited into the Kingsman organisation and put through an intense training regime to be ready to tackle a global threat.
