Director Jeff Nichols / Starring Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, Mike Faist / Genre Crime, Drama

Director James Hawes / Starring Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Helena Bonham Carter / Genre Biography

Inspired by Danny Lyon’s iconic book of photography, Jeff Nichols’ drama immerses you in the look, feel, and sounds of the bare-knuckled, grease-covered subculture of sixties motorcycle riders. Kathy, a strong-willed member of the Vandals who’s married to a wild bikerider named Benny, recounts the club’s evolution over the course of a decade. Over the years, Kathy tries to navigate her husband’s untamed nature and his allegiance to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny’s attention. As life in the Vandals gets more dangerous, and the club threatens to become a more sinister gang, Kathy, Benny, and Johnny are forced to make choices about their loyalty to the club… and to each other.

One Life tells the inspiring true story of Sir Nicholas “Nicky” Winton, whose endeavours on the eve of World War II saved more than six-hundred children from the Nazis. When visiting Prague in 1938, he sees the Jewish refugees and does what he believes is the right thing to do. War is approaching, and it’s a race against time. How many can he liberate before it runs out? Fifty years later, Nicky is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to help. It’s not until he’s surprised by the survivors on live television that he can accept that when facing devastating atrocities, saving even one life is a victory, and the British public learn the truth about the hero hidden in their midst. The Bikeriders IN CINEMAS 1 DECEMBER

Director Jeff Nichols / Starring Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy / Genre Crime, Drama, Thriller The sixties was the golden age for motorcycle riders, making it the perfect backdrop for this furious tale. Headstrong Kathy recounts her time as a member of the Vandals and the reckless evolution of the club. Amongst this grease-covered crew, she meets her husband, Benny, a rebellious rider who lives for the rumbling of bikes and the respect of their unfaltering leader, Johnny. Kathy wrestles to tame Benny’s wild nature as she watches him get sucked into a more sinister and

dangerous side of Johnny’s gang. Jeff Nichols’ ode to the sixties subculture of bikeriders takes a turn from Easy Rider to Goodfellas, leaving the characters at a crossroads as they make choices about their loyalty to the Vandals. Expect an acting masterclass all round as Jodie Comer’s Kathy tells the tale in a flawless Midwestern accent. Austin Butler swaps his blue suede shoes for bike leathers for a smouldering performance reminiscent of James Dean, while Tom Hardy has the air of a Marlon Brando, leading this revved-up pack as Johnny. We can’t wait for this trio to don their leathers and speed into view.

Yet despite all of his conquests, it’s the private war he wages at home that may prove to be his downfall. CAN’T HELP FALLING IN LOVE Discover a different side to a great love story in Sofia Coppola’s intimate, unflinching portrait of Elvis and Priscilla. WORDS LEE CURTIS

Priscilla IN CINEMAS 1 JANUARY

Director Sofia Coppola / Starring Cailee Spaeny, Jacob Elordi / Genre Biography, Drama, Romance A little over a year after Baz Luhrmann’s bombastic biopic brought the King to the big screen, Elvis is back in the building, but the new film from Academy Awardwinner Sofia Coppola presents the story as seen through the eyes of Elvis’ wife, Priscilla. Where Luhrmann’s film faced criticism for glossing over the problematic aspects of their relationship, Coppola tackles them head on in a warts-and-all portrayal of their rocky romance. Based on Priscilla’s bestselling memoir Elvis And Me, the film follows their relationship from the moment a teenage girl meets the man of her dreams through their subsequent, turbulent years of marriage and onto its bitter end.

Girls On Film

With the spotlight on Priscilla, a lot falls on the shoulders of the film’s star Cailee Spaeny. Yet the rising star appears pitch perfect as the fourteen-year-old whose whisked from Germany to Graceland where she’s caught in a trap of superstardom and a world of manipulation, suspicion, and addiction. An equally tough task faces her co-star Jacob Elordi, who must follow Austin Butler’s astonishing, BAFTA-winning transformation to portray the King, but the Euphoria star slips into the blue suede shoes with ease in this fascinating look at the darker side of Elvis.

With a distinct style and catalogue of femalecentric films, Sofia Coppola is perfectly suited to translating Priscilla’s story for the screen.

Michael Fassbender returns from his brief big-screen hiatus to take the central role and though he substitutes the usual gravitas of his biggest roles, his natural magnetism remains as a hapless, Ted Lassolike hero who tries to take the team from poor to pro. Fassbender, Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett, and Waititi regulars Rachel House, Oscar Kightley, and Rhys Darby are joined by a squad of American Samoan actors for an authentic, crowdpleasing celebration. It’s been a long road to the big screen for Next Goal Wins – with COVID complications, Disney’s acquisition of Fox, and Waititi’s Marvel commitments throwing in potential fouls along the way – but it’s finally set to score in cinemas soon.

The joyous Thanksgiving holiday is full of spirit and cheer. But not this year as Eli Roth serves up a seasonal slasher where an axe-wielding figure carves his way through the town that created Thanksgiving. WORDS HANNAH TAYLOR Back To The Grindhouslee-feature

Thanksgiving IN CINEMAS 17 NOVEMBER

Director Eli Roth / Starring Addison Rae, Patrick Dempsey, Milo Manheim, Rick Hoffman / Genre Horror, Mystery Thanksgiving. The most important national holiday celebrated across America. But now, it gets a dark twist. Horror maestro Eli Roth returns to the screen after five years with Thanksgiving, an idea that started as a mock trailer for a fake film in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse and is now a fully-fledged feature-length holiday horror. Nobody celebrates Thanksgiving more than the people of the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, the place where the Pilgrims first settled and the Thanksgiving holiday was created. But this year, after a Black Friday riot, an axe-wielding killer in a Pilgrim hat and mask brings the annual party to a bloody end.

Expect a high death count, screaming teens, and lots of fake blood… but definitely no leftovers. Among the townsfolk caught up in the chaos are TikTok sensationturned-actress Addison Rae who adds to her repertoire as a Scream Queen, while Grey’s Anatomy’s beloved “McDreamy” Patrick Dempsey stars as the turkey-loving town’s sheriff. Roth is best known for his early noughties’ horrors Cabin Fever and Hostel. Back with a fresh and bloody take on the beloved American holiday and a Thanksgiving Killer, who shares similar intentions as Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, then anyone in need of a good scare will have plenty to be thankful for this holiday season.

A NEW MESSIAH LaKeith Stanfield’s Clarence wants to walk in Jesus’ sandals as The Harder They Fall director takes on another classic Hollywood genre with his bold new vision of the biblical epic. WORDS LEE CURTIS

The Book Of Clarence IN CINEMAS 19 JANUARY

Director Jeymes Samuel / Starring LaKeith Stanfield, David Oyelowo, Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, James McAvoy / Genre Adventure, Comedy, History If today is the era of superhero cinema, Hollywood in the fifties and sixties was the age of the biblical epic. But these spectacular stories, like those set in the Old West, largely exclude people of colour. Now, the BAFTA-winning British writer-director of The Harder They Fall addresses this in his fresh, funny, and fearless take on the bible-era epic. Black characters are at the centre of an AD 33-set story that follows Clarence, a regular guy who happens to live in the same neighbourhood as Jesus. In search of a piece of the power and glory, and a chance to free himself from debt, he sets out

to hustle his way into making people believe he’s the Messiah. But saying you’re able to turn water into wine, walk on water, and all manner of miracles is one thing… proving it is another. Reuniting with his director from The Harder They Fall, LaKeith Stanfield leads an ensemble cast that includes David Oyelowo, Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, Micheal Ward, Anna Diop, Alfre Woodard, Teyana Taylor, James McAvoy, and Benedict Cumberbatch. There’s an exciting revelation behind the scenes as Jay-Z not only puts his name to the project as producer, but also brings new music to make this modern revision of the classics that made Hollywood an absolute must.
