Director Akiva Schaffer / Starring Liam Neeson, Paul Walter Hauser, Moses Jones / Genre Action, Comedy
You always hear that they don’t make ‘em like they used to. Well, this year – they do!
The Lonely Island member and director of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Akiva Schaffer, along with producer Seth MacFarlane, bring The Naked Gun out of retirement after thirty years, with a mission to make fun of films again. Bad genre tropes and baddies beware: the Police Squad are here!
Liam Neeson stars as the son of the late, great Frank Drebin Sr. For new recruits, Lieutenant Drebin Sr is the legendarily disastrous detective made famous by the iconic Leslie Nielsen in a series of classic, joke-aminute comedies. If Jr’s following in his father’s footsteps, then he better watch his step as prat falls, parody, and the perfect amount of toilet humour are sure to be in his crosshairs.
Bringing a new generation of the classic crime-busting trio together, Paul Walter Hauser stars as Ed Hocken Jr, the son of Police Squad’s long-suffering Captain, while Moses Jones plays the son of Drebin Sr’s partner,
Nordberg – as played by, err… someone who’s ammo for a joke or two. Will they go there?
With WWE superstar Cody Rhodes, rapper Busta Rhymes, and a rejuvenated, Golden Globe-nominated Pamela Anderson in the exciting supporting squad, The Naked Gun is surely a guaranteed good time. It is, and don’t call us Shirley.
Catching a missing swan, popping to the shop for a cornetto, and taking down a countryside cult before heading to the pub and then home for an action movie marathon. It’s all in a day’s work for Nicholas Angle and Danny Butterman in this classic. Perfick.
You still ain’t seen Bad Boys 2? It’s got fast laughs, slow-mo explosions, and the kind of buddy cop camaraderie not seen since the eighties. It’s essential nineties nostalgia and pure escapism.
Finally, a funny female-led cop film. Melissa McCarthy is loud and foul-mouthed while Sandra Bullock is strait-laced and uptight. Pair them up, set them on the trail of a drug lord, and sit back and laugh at the seriouslyimprov.entertaining
No, it’s Superman… as he’s known and loved in James Gunn’s epic revival. Fighting for truth, justice, and the American way, an old-school hero might be the one the world needs right now. WORDS HANNAH TAYLOR
Director James Gunn / Starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion / Genre Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Returning to Superman’s roots, Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn unleashes his fresh, invigorating take on the Man of Steel. Bright, bold, and refuelled by the power of the sun, Superman is back – as uplifting and inspiring as ever. Donning the cape for a new era, David Corenswet is Clark Kent aka Superman. Balancing life and responsibilities as a superheroic visitor from another planet and a mild-mannered reporter, he seeks to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, driven by an inherent purpose to do good. But does old-school heroism still have a place in a rapidly-evolving modern world?
Alongside the first-ever barking live-action depiction of Superman’s loyal dog, Krypto, the stellar cast includes Nicholas Hoult’s formidable Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan’s tenacious Lois Lane, and Nathan Fillion’s charismatic Guy Gardner aka Green Lantern. Isabela Merced also takes flight as Hawkgirl, one of many newcomers from the far reaches of the universe.
Gunn’s vibrant vision is a colourful throwback to the Christopher Reeve era. From Smallville to Metropolis, the film is full of life and fan-favourite characters from the comic books, including Clark’s adoptive parents, the Kents; his colleagues at the Daily Planet; and more.
Don’t miss this cinematic flight!
Oscar-nominated Fleischer cartoons were technically the first and Kirk Alyn the first-ever in live-action, but it was George Reeves who made the role his own in the fifties.
Richard Donner’s late-seventies blockbuster saw Christopher Reeve soar to worldwide stardom. Groundbreaking, BAFTA-winning documentary Super/Man sheds light on the husband, father, fighter, and superhero.
The nineties brought Dean Cain’s light touch in Lois & Clark, before the noughties saw Tom Welling star as a young Clark in Smallville and Brandon Routh lead a cinema comeback in Superman Returns.
Dark times call for different heroes. After Henry Cavill’s beloved Superman in the SnyderVerse and Tyler Hoechlin in the Arrowverse, Corenswet fills big boots as the hope for a brave, bold, and bright future for DC.
Twenty-two years after walking a day in each other’s shoes, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back for more chaos as they get to grips with another intergenerational identity crisis.

Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan / Genre Comedy, Family, Fantasy
Freaky Friday released at the peak of Lindsay Lohan’s powers, cementing her status as a teen comedy icon along with Mean Girls. Her body-swapping antics with the legendary Jamie Lee Curtis, as Anna and Tess Coleman, shot the film to cult-classic status. The world is long overdue a sequel.
The beloved mother and daughter duo are shifting personalities all over again in an even Freakier Friday –one that brings more family members into the mix.
The follow-up centres on Anna’s daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter, played by Julia Butters and newcomer Sophia Hammons respectively. Like mother, like
daughter: the girls wake up one day trapped in the bodies of their mother and grandmother. Getting through the day and reversing the spell means masquerading as adults for them, while giving Anna and Tess the chance to relive their teenage years – complete with all the outlandish chaos, hilarity, and unexpected life lessons that come with it.
But with Anna now in her late thirties and Tess a sixty-something, today’s teenage experience is very different to the ones they remember. Before the day is through, everyone will gain a fresh perspective on life across generations.
Doubling down on the identityhopping madness and injecting a fresh, unexpected twist to the Freaky formula, Freakier Friday promises twice the fun while celebrating the value of seeing life through someone else’s eyes.
John Woo’s completely bonkers crime thriller sees John Travolta’s FBI agent go undercover as his worst enemy by –you guessed it – taking his face off and putting Nicolas Cage’s on. Both actors run riot aping each other’s characters as a result.
Wishing they had each other’s lives, Ryan Reynolds’ playboy bachelor and Jason Bateman’s overworked dad swap places. Along the way, both characters learn there’s ups and downs to every life.
Another wild reboot of a childhood favourite some twenty years in the making follows a group of teenagers who get pulled into the dangerous video game world of Jumanji… and into the bodies of their mismatched avatars, played by Jack Black, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan.

Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson / Starring Madelyn Cline, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr, Chase Sui Wonders, Tyriq Withers / Genre Horror
In 1997, a massacre shocked a beautiful seaside city in North Carolina. Now, almost three decades later, history repeats itself for a new group of friends.
After partying hard, five friends accidentally run down a stranger in the street. Panicked, they flee the scene and promise to never tell a soul. One summer later, just when they thought they’d gotten away with it, their past catches up with them. Someone knows their secret.
Horror newcomer Madelyn Cline announces herself as a new scream queen as Danica, who along with her friends – played by exciting
up-and-comers Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, and Sarah Pidgeon – are stalked by a figure seemingly tied to the city’s bloody past.
A hooded cloak, a fishing hook, and a hunger for revenge… The Fisherman is back.
The copycat killer will be as familiar to fans as he is to the survivors from the nineties, Julie James and Ray Bronson. Original scream queen Jennifer Love Hewitt and her romantic lead, Freddie Prinze Jr, reprise their roles as the famous final girl and guy – reuniting to save the teens from the same fate their friends suffered all those years ago.
Since the cult-classic horror first hit the big screen, its legacy has stood the test of time with two sequels and a TV series. But at the heart of its lasting impact are its unforgettable lead characters.
The iconic final girl is back like she never left. After surviving the original slasher, she’s now a college professor and still as resilient and compelling as ever. It’s no surprise that a new generation turns to her for help when terror resurfaces.
With the franchise’s blood-soaked legacy firmly intact, this modern slasher promises nostalgic nods to the nineties original and fresh scares... whether you’re in your seat or hiding behind it.
Julie’s crush and fan-favourite survivor, played by Freddie Prinze Jr, is just as ready to confront the horrors of the past. Not all can return – Helen Shivers, made famous by his real-life wife Sarah Michelle Gellar, remains one of the original’s most tragic losses.

Director Jay Roach / Starring Olivia Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch / Genre Comedy, Drama, Romance
The 1980s were defined by some fantastic black comedies, and one of the very best is Danny DeVito’s adaptation of Warren Adler’s novel, where Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner bring a vicious divorce battle to life.
Fast forward three decades, The Roses are reinvented for the twentyfirst century by Austin Powers and Meet The Parents director Jay Roach, with two of Britain’s biggest stars leading the charge.
Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch take on the roles of a married couple who, quite simply, want to kill each other.
If you don’t know the story, let’s catch up: The Roses, in this case Theo and Ivy, once happily married, find their relationship breaking down as their lives take different paths. What begins as a divorce soon escalates into all-out war, with each
partner determined to tear the other down in the most outrageous – and hilarious – ways possible.
If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve only had a taste. Brace yourself for dark, nefarious, and downright vile tactics to win the war.
The fact that all of this chaos is being brought to life by such esteemed acting talents as Colman and Cumberbatch, both proven to be extremely funny in the right setting, makes the film even more enticing.
Throw in a couple of comedy heavyweights from across the pond, Kate McKinnon and Andy Samberg, and you’ve got the makings of something truly special.

While we’ve seen one of the Marvel’s biggest series of comics on the big screen before, there’s something very special about this Fantastic Four joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time – and fans across the globe are feverish. Could this be a new dawn for the MCU?
It’s not just excitement for the superheroes, but also for four of the hottest names in Hollywood who are joining the MCU, too. Step forward: Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/ Mr Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human
Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. Together, they’re kick-starting the fascinating Phase 6 in style.
Appearances in Doomsday and Secret Wars are pretty much a given with all the multiversal shenanigans about to go down. The Russos return to direct their showdown with Robert Downey Jr’s Dr Doom.
The final piece of the MCU jigsaw, its famous mutants. With the foursome’s powers
Elasticity, invisibility, fire-flight, and super-strength – they already have their powers this time around, but their mission is clear: save the world. Though it’s not clear which Earth they’re on quite yet, it is under threat from intergalactic supervillain Galactus and his minion, the Silver Surfer.
With Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars on the horizon, this marks the First Steps into an exciting new era and one where any number of cameos could appear, but just having the Fab Four part of it all is geek-fandom Nirvana.
Hold onto your multiverses… It’s Clobberin’ Time!
With the Fab Four having a close affinity to New York City, could they help Peter Parker on his rumoured return for a fourth chapter?
If they’re from a different Earth to the main MCU one, perhaps they’ll be helping Doctor Strange across the multiverse, fixing universal incursions and tying the timelines back together.

IN CINEMAS 29 AUGUST
Director Darren Aronofsky / Starring Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith Genre Action, Comedy, Crime, Thriller
Hank Thompson, a one-time baseball star turned barman, is unwittingly pulled into New York City’s criminal underworld when a seemingly simple favour spirals into a nightmare of mistaken identity, stolen money, and survival instincts he never knew he possessed.
Austin Butler stars as this reluctant antihero navigating a peculiar web of mobsters, crooked cops, and violent drug dealers across nineties Manhattan. Matt Smith is almost unrecognisable as his punk-rock neighbour; Zoë Kravitz, as Hank’s girlfriend, becomes entangled in the escalating chaos; and Regina King plays a detective torn between justice and corruption. Key players not to be overlooked: Liev Schreiber and
Vincent D’Onofrio are a pair of formidable Jewish mobsters, while Benito A Martínez Ocasio – aka Bad Bunny – is a ruthless Puerto Rican gang member. They all want their pound of flesh.
In his signature style, Darren Aronofsky – the visionary behind Requiem For A Dream, The Fountain, and Black Swan –transforms Charlie Huston’s novel into a visceral, punchy urban thriller. A master of psychological extremes, he pushes characters to their breaking points and here skilfully depicts Hank’s descent from an ordinary man to a reluctant, but necessary fighter.
It’s a return to gritty, fast-paced street-level storytelling after The Whale, delivering yet another unflinching dive into the darkest corners of human nature, with a timely dose of black comedy to boot.
Hopes are high for a home run.
After his Elvis breakout, the rising star soars. Now under a director famed for drawing raw, award-winning performances – think Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler and Brendan Fraser in The Whale – he’s sure to knock it out of the park.
ZOË KRAVITZ
Aronofsky thrives on taking his leading women to the edge. Fierce, yet fractured –like Black Swan’s Natalie Portman and Mother!’s Jennifer Lawrence – Kravitz enters the fray as an EMT nurse whose steamy entanglement leaves her questioning if she should stay in the game.
If Doctor Who fans were stunned by their beloved Eleventh’s blonde wig in House Of The Dragon, they’re in for an even bigger shock. Mohawked, studded, and punked out like a Sex Pistol, Smith is full anarchy in the USA.
A spine-chilling case of missing children turns a small town upside down in a new, wholly original nightmare from the twisted mind behind Barbarian. WORDS LEE CURTIS
Director Zach Cregger / Starring Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams / Genre Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Something strange is happening in Maybrook.
On an ordinary Wednesday morning in a quiet American town, at exactly 2:17am, seventeen schoolchildren from the same class rise from their beds, leave their homes… and vanish.
Fear grips the town. Parents demand answers. The mystery mirrors some of cinema’s most intense thrillers – Gone Baby Gone, Room, and Prisoners – but one of the most exciting new voices in horror takes every parent’s worst nightmare in a wholly original and totally unpredictable direction.
Julia Garner is Mrs Gandy, the schoolteacher whose class has disappeared. Why hers? Why only hers? The questions mount as the town spirals into chaos. Among those searching for answers: Josh Brolin is a furious father driven to the brink; Benedict Wong, a headmaster under immense pressure; and Alden Ehrenreich,
a police officer struggling with a case the likes of which his small town has never seen before.
As time passes, the horrors grow more extreme as the community reaches breaking point.
We need answers as much as they do. Is a sinister Pied Piper at play? Is Cregger making a chilling commentary on real-life horrors? Or is he conjuring something even more terrifying again?
After blindsiding audiences with Barbarian, there’s only one way to find out – by seeing one of the year’s most eagerly awaited horrors for yourself.
HAVE YOU SEEN ANY CHILDREN?
Zach Cregger burst onto the horror scene with his breakout, Barbarian, a wildly original experience that constantly keeps audiences guessing, terrified, and, by the end, clamouring for more. Three years later, a website mysteriously appeared with clues for his next film. Presented as a local newsletter, maybrookmissing.net chronicles the mystery at the heart of Weapons and displays disturbing doorbell camera footage of seemingly possessed children running through the streets in the dead of night – an unsettling glimpse of the horrors to come. It’s a masterclass in viral marketing, echoing the electrifying buzz achieved by The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield, and The Dark Knight. Adding to the intrigue, there’s also a news article about the events of Barbarian, which throws even more questions into the mix!

Director Joachim Rønning / Starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, Jeff Bridges / Genre Action, Sci-Fi
Spanning five decades, Tron is one of sci-fi cinema’s most enduring and influential franchises. The legendary, Jeff Bridges-led 1982 original was a visual effects pioneer, offering a story that reflected society’s distrust in the rise of computers. Tron: Legacy reimagined the Grid as a synth-driven cyberpunk dystopia – enormous in scope, it established a cinematic scale that wouldn’t be matched until the peak of the MCU.
Now, as the franchise returns, those themes are as relevant as ever in an era where tech anxiety pervades. Tron: Ares imagines a future where AI doesn’t just create what we can imagine – it threatens to destroy everything we know.
Oscar-winner Jared Leto leads as the enigmatic Ares, a dangerous Program with a mission to infiltrate our world. In his wake, the Grid
begins its invasion, bringing the franchise’s futuristic powers crashing into our world. Signature Light Cycle battles erupt on our streets as laserlike energy emissions scythe through cars with ease, hulking Recognizers and acrobatic Light Jets patrol the skies, and Identity Discs tear the very fabric of reality.
Stunning, high-stakes action, the iconic neon-drenched aesthetic, and a thumping Nine Inch Nails’ soundtrack – Tron is back!
A dark digital frontier awaits.
Multiple decades between instalments is very much the norm for Tron. Here’s the story so far, for those who need to download an update.
Computer programmer Kevin Flynn is pulled into a digital world called the Grid – a reality where Programs appear as human avatars, but deletion is a very real execution. Trapped inside, he teams up with security Program Tron to battle the oppressive Master Control Programme.
Decades later, Flynn’s son Sam discovers the portal to the Grid and is drawn in, finding his longlost father, who’s been trapped inside for years. With the digital world now under the control of Clu, a ruthless AI mirror image of Kevin’s brilliance, they must stop an invasion of the real world.
To save their world, they must come to ours. Rihanna is Smurfette and she’s getting the search party started in an all-new musical adventure.
When Papa Smurf is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe. Smurfs features an all-star voice cast including Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy,
