TO THE CURZON MAY/JUNE 2019

Turn to the INSIDE BACK PAGE for our listings

The start of May finds us in the middle of our run of Avengers: Endgame, the climax of the current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Prepare to be blown away by the adventure and our new Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound! Our hugely popular Curzon Comedy returns with a special night of live stand up featuring some of the brightest and funniest acts on the current UK circuit, including Craig Murray who you may recognise from the PlusNet adverts. Relax, have a drink (or three) in our fantastic Oak Room Bar, and enjoy a night of laughter. We are excited to announce Woman at War, an imaginative film from Iceland about a seemingly innocent choir conductor who leads a secret double life as a committed environmental activist. Known to others as “The Mountain Woman”, she wages a one-womanwar on the local aluminium industry to protect the stunning highland landscape that is under threat. As funny as it is hard hitting and relevant this really is one not to be missed. Bristol Bad Film Club join us in June for a celebration of the joy that can be gleaned from the very worst of cinema! Following the environmental theme, On Deadly Ground, follows the ‘environmentalist’ hero Forrest Taft (Steven Seagal) as he takes revenge on the sleazy oil company he used to work for, mostly by blowing stuff up. Timon Singh from the Bad Film Club will be introducing the film and the delights of watching films so bad they’re good. With such a packed schedule there’s plenty more we’ve not had chance to mention here but rest assured there’s ballets, skateboards, operas, outdoor swimming, and even Will Smith as a genie coming too! See you soon The Curzon Team

flamboyant biopic. Fresh from his impactful turn in BBC drama Bodyguard, Golden Globe-winner Richard Madden portrays Elton’s former long-time manager John Reid. Bell takes the role of Bernie Taupin, the writer responsible for the lyrics of many of Elton’s hits, while Bryce Dallas Howard embodies Elton’s mother, Sheila. All would play integral parts in Elton’s rise to stardom before witnessing it begin to spiral out of control. Punctuated by triumph, despair, addiction, and redemption, Rocketman pairs a talented cast and director with the story of one of the music industry’s most enduring legends. Discover how Reginald Kenneth Dwight began his journey to becoming an iconic singer, pianist, and composer who would go on to sell over three-hundred-million records worldwide.

Directing Fantasy Dexter Fletcher was tasked with bringing Elton’s flamboyant legacy to the silver screen. While some may recognise him from his time in front of the camera starring in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Band Of Brothers, the director has quickly built a reputation for being a major talent behind the camera as well. His previous pictures - including Wild Bill, Eddie The Eagle, and the Proclaimers’ musical Sunshine On Leith - earned widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Despite remaining uncredited, Fletcher stepped up last year to replace Bryan Singer and complete the troubled production of the foot-stomping Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody that wowed audiences and became a BAFTA and Oscar champion.

ROBERTA/REXY

Most remember the first time they witnessed Dr Alan Grant step out of his jeep and bask in the wonder of seeing real-life dinosaurs. Little did he know that a T-Rex would soon arrive to cause problems. Fans have taken to calling the original “Rexy,” but in-universe her official name is Roberta.

GODS AND MONSTERS

Four oversized turtles roaming New York’s streets and sewers would typically be cause for concern, but somehow Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael have avoided such controversy because ninjas are cool. They’re happy to fight Shredder’s forces if they’ve eaten pizza - and lots of it.

Years after Godzilla’s battle with MUTO in San Francisco, the 350-foot reptile is forced to slither back to the surface and prove his worth as King Of The Monsters. areth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot did a good job at reminding audiences why the titular creature is often considered to be one of cinema’s greatest monsters. A good thing too, as now he’s needed once again - this time teaming up with the 18 May / June 2019

crypto-zoological agency Monarch to do battle against a smattering of god-sized creatures. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters marks the third entry in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, a shared cinematic universe that has been slowly building towards an epic clash between the roaring reptile and King Kong as depicted in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. For the time being, however, Godzilla will have to contend with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah if he’s to make it that far.

Returning characters from the previous Godzilla include Sally Hawkins as Dr Vivienne Graham, and Ken Watanabe as Dr Ishiro Serizawa, who are now joined by The Conjuring’s Vera Farmiga and Straight Outta Compton’s O’Shea Jackson Jr. as members of Monarch as well as Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown as a child caught up in the conflict. Will they make it to the Kong vs. Godzilla match of the champions, though? They’ll need to survive through King Of The Monsters first.

FOWL PLAY Two worlds collide when Artemis Fowl, a young criminal mastermind, kidnaps a fairy elf as part of a daring ransom plot in Disney's epic new fantasy adventure. WORDS JIM ROBERTS RELEASE DATE 9 AUGUST / Director Kenneth Branagh / Starring Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Judi Dench / Genre Adventure, Family, Fantasy

C

hild genius Artemis must grow up quickly when he takes over the Fowl criminal enterprise at the tender age of twelve, in a film based on the popular children’s book series from Irish author Eoin Colfer. Along with trusted bodyguard Butler, Artemis seeks out the existence of a mysterious race of underground fairies, believing they hold a connection to his missing father and the key to restoring his family’s fortune.

After an elaborate stakeout, Artemis and Butler manage to capture elf Holly Short and detain her at Fowl Manor for ransom. However, Commander Root, leader of LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Recon), doesn’t take kindly to the interference in their world by the “Mud Men” humans from above, and enlists the help of criminal mastermind and kleptomaniac dwarf Mulch Diggums to carry out a daring rescue attempt. Director Sir Kenneth Branagh is no stranger to blending the worlds of science and magic, having directed Marvel’s first Thor in 2011. Here he presents both protagonist and audience with what might be a fine line between good and evil, as the two worlds collide with full force.

Nurturing New Talent Dublin-born and Kilkenny-raised thirteen-year-old Ferdia Shaw beat 1,200 other hopefuls for the role of Artemis Fowl II. Shaw is the grandson of actor Robert Shaw, known for his roles in Jaws and From Russia With Love. Lara McDonnell takes on the role of Captain Holly Short (arguably the film’s main hero), with a few film credits to her name as well as the role of Matilda in the West End. The two teens will have some prodigious wings beneath which to develop their promising careers, starring alongside veterans of the film world and Disney franchises: Dame Judi Dench makes her third Disney appearance with the gender swapped role of cigar-chewing Commander Root, and Josh Gad marks his fourth Disney appearance (including the upcoming Frozen 2).
