EMOTIONAL ABUSE

Emotional abuse is a type of abuse where someone tries to use emotions to manipulate, embarrass, shame, blame, criticised, or otherwise try to gain control and power over someone else. Over time this constant pattern of abuse and behaviour can affect your self-esteem and mental health. Spotting the signs of emotional abuse can be trickier than more other types of abuse which can lead to some people overlooking, ignoring or dismissing the signs. Mostly occurring in romantic relationships, but it can happen between friends, family members, even colleagues and can happen at any stage in people’s lives.

Emotional abuse can be incredibly damaging, if someone is stopping you expressing yourself, is belittling your opinions or making you doubt events or experiences you know to be true (gaslighting) this is abusive behaviour.

If you find yourself changing how you act to better accommodate their behaviour or find yourself feeling scared or anxious about their reactions this is abusive behaviour. There are many types of abuse.

Intimidation or threats, making you feel small, shouting, acting aggressively or making you feel scared.

Criticism. name calling, belittling comments for using technology or success, berating your strengths and accomplishments.

Undermining, this may include dismissing your opinion or disputing your version of events it's a form of gaslighting to doubt yourself.

Making you feel guilty, this can range from emotional blackmail to ignoring you by way of manipulation or they suddenly act so nice to you after being cool making you feel sorry for them and uplifted to get back in their good books. Shaming. Making you feel ashamed of yourself, your behaviour or experiences.

Name calling. They may use derogatory names or phrases when speaking with you put you down in conversations or say things to make you feel bad about yourself. These hurtful things may be disguised as a joke or played off as sarcasm when questioned.

Different treatment. An emotionally abusive partner, friend, sibling or parent may treat you differently from other friends or family, they may also put you in dangerous situations, try to control you, put pressure on you to do things that you aren't comfortable with or don't want to do.

Isolation. This can include stopping you from having friends making you doubt the others care for you trying to exclude you from gatherings or events requires you to check in constantly, wants to know where you are and who you're with, requires proof of where you are, these can be further signs of controlling and isolating behaviours.

Withholding affection, time, sex or money. This can be a method of controlling you trying to make you change your behaviours or opinions.

Unrealistic expectations. Making unreasonable demands on you such as wanting to spend all their time with you, expecting you to drop everything to meet their needs, expecting you to share every opinion. Someone setting unrealistic expectations may never be happy no matter how hard you try or you may never live up to their standards no matter what you do, demanding exact times and dates of past events, past discussions they deny happened. Saying things are true that are not. Monitoring calls, technology, social media ect.

Invalidation. Dismissing your tale of events, dismissing your perspective, refusing to accept how you feel, demanding you feel a certain way, accusing you as being too sensitive or emotional, dismissing your needs or accusing you of being needy or selfish.

An emotionally abusive person may show signs of jealousy possessiveness or make unwanted accusations of cheating. Using silent treatment or withholding affection and attention can be common tactics used in an attempt to control your behaviour.

If somebody is making you feel uncomfortable, upset, anxious or scared this isn't normal or acceptable. Emotional abuse is often subtle and hard to detect both for those outside of the relationship and the person being abused, you may feel yourself feeling anxious, confused, frustrated, misunderstood, wounded, or worthless. Remember everybody deserves to be treated with kindness and respect and it is not normal to be made to feel like this frequently. It can be extremely upsetting and this is a reflection on the law and serious crime act 2015 making behaviour that is controlling and coercive punishable by a prison sentence. Over time you may feel like you have lost all sense of who you are. You may no longer trust yourself and feel worthless. Research suggests that emotional abuse can have such an impact on our physical well being too.

What to do if you're being emotionally abused. Speak out! Telling someone you're being abused means that you no longer have to deal with it alone. Keep records of what has happened to remind you of the scale and scope of emotional abuse you experience. When abusers are being nice it can be easy to forget or overlook or to convince ourselves that it is as bad as we thought so having these daily events will make you feel like you can put their behaviour into perspective. Prioritising yourself practising self-care concentrating on your own needs will help you deal with the dated age stress and challenges that may arise. Stop blaming yourself for abuse is never OK, you are not the problem and recognising your worth should be the first step forward to escaping the cycle.

If you're worried about someone else, let them know, let them know you care and you are there for them and you're happy to talk and support them in any way you can.
