When an injury changes everything, the right legal support matters Serious personal injuries can happen to anyone — and the consequences can reach far beyond the initial accident. For those affected, there can be loss of earnings, physical pain, psychological trauma, ongoing treatment and uncertainty about what the future holds. At Gregory Abrams Davidson Solicitors (GAD), the Personal Injury team understands that securing compensation is only part of the picture. It is about understanding the individual, the impact their injury has had on their life and what they may need in the years ahead. With more than 45 years’ experience, GAD has helped many clients navigate complex personal injury claims, always putting the individual at the heart of the case.

Tom’s story

Tom was crossing the road when he was hit by a car, suffering a serious knee injury that required surgery. Although the driver accepted responsibility and made an offer, Tom decided not to settle. GAD looked beyond the immediate injury, building a detailed picture of its longer-term impact on Tom’s work, rehabilitation, earnings and everyday life. After five years of work on the case, GAD secured a £165,000 settlement, reflecting the wider financial, professional and personal consequences of the accident.

Gareth’s story

Gareth was attacked by a customer at work and subsequently developed severe anxiety and post-traumatic stress. His confidence disappeared and he was eventually forced to take early retirement from a career he had spent years building. GAD investigated whether his employer had done enough to protect him and, importantly, understood that Gareth did not want to go to court and relive his trauma. A £25,000 settlement provided financial support and enabled Gareth to access the psychological treatment he needed, without the additional distress of court proceedings.

Paul’s story

Paul was in his early twenties when he fell approximately 30 feet from an unsafe structure at work, suffering a significant head injury, multiple fractures and facial injuries. Responsibility was disputed and the company responsible subsequently went into administration. GAD refused to give up, identifying the appropriate parties and coordinating evidence from a range of experts to establish the longterm impact of Paul’s injuries. The case ultimately resulted in a £160,000 settlement.

Alison’s story

Alison suffered serious dental injuries, facial scarring and emotional distress following an accident during a school sports activity. Years later, as the long-term consequences became clearer, she needed to act before her 21st birthday or risk losing her right to bring a claim. Despite the school denying responsibility and the tight timeframe, GAD acted quickly, gathering evidence and expert opinions. The case resulted in a £28,500 settlement, helping Alison move forward with the treatment and confidence she needed.

More than compensation

Every personal injury case is different. For some clients, it is about securing financial support for the future. For others, it is about accessing treatment, rebuilding confidence or simply achieving a sense of closure. At GAD, the focus is on understanding the whole picture and providing knowledgeable, compassionate legal support from the first conversation through to resolution. If you or someone close to you has suffered a serious injury that wasn’t your fault, GAD’s experienced Personal Injury team can help you understand your options. Claims must pass eligibility criteria to qualify, and clients may have to pay fees if a compensation settlement is reached. For more information about the potential costs of a claim, please visit gadlegal.co.uk.

Hair today, gone tomorrow! This can be a reality

"Unwanted facial hair is just that, so don't live with it!"

Contact Serenity Clinic today on 0151 625 6256 The most common places that facial hair appears are to either side of the mid-chin or around the outer edges of the lip. Hair growth in these areas is typically hormonally stimulated consisting of - in most cases - thick hairs called 'terminal" hairs. This type of hair is deeply rooted, with a rapid regrowth. Unfortunately, most start to pluck these hairs when they first appear. Don't! This just encourages blood supply, in essence "feeding' them and enabling hair to grow stronger. Fortunately for us ladies, facial hair deesn't just appear all at once. It tends to start with the odd one and increases over a long period of time. Most people will start by plucking 'rogue' hairs every week or so, but then they presto' - before you know it, you're plucking every day. Just a short 10-minute electrolysis appointment with a registered and licensed electrologist such as SERENITY CLINIC could stop this from happening. Most of us lead busy lives, so we often put off doing things for ourselves, such as tackling those unwanted hairs. So, if you're plucking or shaving, contact us today for professional advice and a lasting solution.

While electrolysis is still the only procedure that can state the word 'permanent", there are other hair reduction and removal techniques available. Just remember a patch test and consultation are required for some treatments. Ultrasound: Developed in 1996, it uses sound waves and static energy to damage/destroy the hair at its root. Good for downy or fine hairs. Alkaline wash: Ideal for 'vellus' (fine downy or peach fuss) hair that tends to grow over larger areas of the face. Threading: Using a knot in cotton same results as above Dermaplaning: designed for deeper skin exfoliation but has the same hair removal results as alkaline wash just not as deep. Waxing: Serenity Clinic uses Lycon wax, a superior wax for delicate areas, Hollywood & Brazilian. Warm wax is traditionally used on legs and larger areas where hair removal is required. IPL/Laser: All areas treatable. Quick treatment by highly skilled team. Great on large areas. Electrolysis: still the only method that can be referred to as permanent removal.

Our highly experienced team will advise on the best removal methods for individuals permanent removal or hair management treatment plans.

When It’s Not Just a Crush Understanding the All-Consuming Experience of Limerence You see them, and they smile. Suddenly, it’s a good day. The next time you see them, they barely acknowledge you, and your mood plummets. You replay the interaction, wondering what changed. You look for meaning in a glance, a conversation or a message. You know you barely know this person, yet somehow they have extraordinary power over how you feel. This can happen in limerence. Psychologist Dorothy Tennov coined the term limerence, described as an involuntary, overwhelming longing for another person’s attention and reciprocation. The person at the centre of the fixation is often called the “limerent object”, or LO. Uncertainty can fuel the experience. A smile or friendly conversation can create an enormous high, while being ignored or rejected can feel devastating. I first experienced limerence as a teenager, although I didn’t have a word for it then. Looking back, I can recognise how completely another person’s smallest response could influence my mood, and how difficult it was to understand why.

It is important not to romanticise limerence. Intense preoccupation can lead to repeated contact, monitoring or other behaviour that crosses another person’s boundaries. There may be no malicious intent, but the impact on the other person still matters. Perhaps one of the hardest parts is having nowhere to talk about it. Telling a partner may feel impossible, while confiding in friends or family can feel too risky. Counselling may be the first room where someone can finally say all of this out loud. A place to talk honestly about the attraction, fantasies, intrusive thoughts, guilt and confusion without being judged. Understanding limerence doesn’t make the feelings disappear overnight, but it can help someone separate their feelings from their choices, understand what may be maintaining the fixation, and gradually reclaim some of its power over their life. Emma Bennett, BSc (Open) MBACP Meadowbrook Counselling

One of the most confusing aspects of limerence is that rationally, someone may know they don’t really know their LO well enough to want a relationship with them. Yet they can’t stop thinking about them. They may fantasise about a future together, idealise them and find it almost impossible to imagine them doing anything wrong. When this happens to someone already in a relationship, it can be particularly painful. They may love their partner and have no intention of leaving but still be consumed by thoughts about somebody else. Intrusive thoughts can become upsetting or shocking, including imagining circumstances that would leave them free to pursue the LO. They may feel enormous guilt for thoughts they didn’t choose and don’t want to act upon. There is growing interest in the relationship between limerence and neurodivergence. Experiences associated with ADHD and autism, including intense focus, emotional regulation differences and patterns of attachment, may help explain why limerence feels particularly intense for some neurodivergent people. Research is still developing, however, and limerence is not exclusive to neurodivergent people.

The Equity Release Council’s Q1 data reflects the rising number of homeowners accessing their property wealth to support their financial needs in later life. It also highlights the ongoing challenges may retirees face with rising living expenses and the need for sufficient income in retirement. In addition, the proportion of people using equity release to gift to family has doubled year-on-year, this indicates a growing desire among older homeowners to provide intergenerational financial support.

Family Separation: Should this be a Public Health Issue? When a relationship ends, we often think about the practical consequences first: Where will we live? What happens to the house? When will the children see each parent? How will finances be divided? But perhaps we should be asking a bigger question:

What happens to our health and wellbeing when a family separates? Relationship breakdown can be one of the most stressful experiences a person goes through. There can be grief, anger, anxiety, loneliness, financial pressure and uncertainty about the future. For parents, there is often the additional worry of how separation will affect their children. Yet we largely treat separation as a private family matter — or, when things become difficult, as a legal problem. Should we instead see family separation as a public health issue? The question is worth considering. Research has increasingly highlighted the relationship between separation, relationship breakdown and mental health. Men can be particularly vulnerable. A recent international review of more than 100 million men found significantly higher rates of suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts and suicide among men who were separated or divorced compared with married men, with the period immediately following separation appearing particularly high risk. These are sobering statistics. Behind them are real people who may suddenly find themselves without their home, their partner or daily contact with their children — while also feeling that they are expected to simply carry on. Women can experience equally significant emotional and psychological pressures. Pregnancy, childbirth, relationship difficulties and separation can coincide with periods of enormous vulnerability. Recent

public discussion around cases such as Lindsay Clancy has also highlighted the devastating consequences that can arise when severe perinatal mental health difficulties are not recognised or adequately supported. None of this means that separation is inherently harmful. Sometimes separating is the healthiest and safest decision for a family.

It is how separation happens that can make the difference. For children, in particular, ongoing, intense parental conflict can be deeply damaging. We now know that prolonged exposure to stress can affect a young child’s developing brain and emotional regulation. Babies and very young children may not understand the words being spoken, but they can experience the tension around them. This challenges the familiar assumption that “they are too young to understand”. Perhaps they are not. And perhaps the greatest risk to children isn’t necessarily the fact that their parents separate, but being caught in a prolonged conflict between them. So what could a public-health approach look like? It could mean giving families access to support before they reach crisis point — helping parents understand the impact of conflict, giving children an appropriate voice, recognising mental health difficulties, supporting fathers as well as mothers, and making mediation, counselling, parenting support and practical advice easier to access. It means recognising that a family does not experience its problems in separate boxes labelled “legal”, “financial”, “mental health” and “parenting”. It experiences one human crisis. The financial cost to society is significant too. The wider cost of family breakdown has been estimated at

around £50 billion a year. But perhaps the greater cost is impossible to calculate: a child’s anxiety, a parent’s depression, a father’s despair, or the long-term consequences of unresolved family conflict. So, should family separation be considered a public health issue? There may not be a simple answer. But if we know that separation can affect mental health, children’s development, physical wellbeing and the wider community, perhaps it is time to have the conversation. Because supporting a family through separation should not simply be about reaching the right legal outcome.

It should also be about helping people emerge from one of life’s most difficult experiences with their wellbeing, relationships and children’s futures protected as far as possible. Perhaps the question isn’t whether family separation is a public health issue. Perhaps the question is: Can we really afford to keep treating it as though it isn’t? In the meantime however if you do need any support going through a family transition make sure you have the right team around you. Myself, Helen Pittard, and the team at 174 Family Law are always here to help.

Your Mouth, Your Health: Why the Two Are More Connected Than You Think For many years dentistry and medicine have been treated as rather separate worlds. We visit our dentist to look after our teeth and gums, our GP when we feel unwell, and other healthcare professionals for different aspects of our health. But of course, our bodies don't work like that. Our mouth is very much part of our body. and there is increasing recognition that oral health and general health are closely interconnected. As dental professionals, this is something we feel passionately about and it is a subject we are looking forward to exploring with Wirral Wellbeing readers over the coming months. Because modern dentistry is about so much more than fixing teeth.

What can your mouth tell us about your health A dental examination provides an opportunity to look not only for tooth decay, but at the health of the gums, soft tissues, jaw and

immune system responds. In some people, this leads to persistent inflammation and destruction of the tissues supporting the teeth. And there is growing evidence that what happens in the mouth may have implications beyond it.

what is happening elsewhere in the body. Dry mouth, for exam-

conditions. Recurrent ulceration or changes to the oral tissues may occasionally warrant further investigation, while dentists routinely examine the mouth for signs of oral cancer.

Our medical history matters too. Diabetes, cardiovascular disease. hormonal changes, medications, smoking. alcohol, diet and many other factors can influence oral health and, increasingly, research

is helping us understand that some of these relationships can work in both directions.

periodontitis and cardiovascular disease.

People with periodontitis have been shown to have a higher risk of conditions including coronary heart disease and stroke.

There are several possible explanations. Inflamed gum tissuse can allow oral bacteria and their products to enter the bloodstream,

while chronic periodontal disease also contributes to an ongoing infiammatory response.

Both bacteria and systemic inflammation have been

health forms part of looking after ourselves more broadly.

A two-way relationship with diabetes Another fascinating example is diabetes, where the relationship with periodontal disease is considered to be bidirectional.

People with diabetes, particularly when blood

glucose is poorly controlled, are more susceptible to periodontitis and may experience more severe

disease. At the same time, significant periodontal inflammation can make blood glucose more difficult to control.

Research has also shown that treating periodontal disease can improve measures of blood glucose

control in some people with diabetes. It is a perfect illustration of why drawing a firm line between

'dental health' and 'general health' doesn't always

make sense. And these aren't the only connections worth exploring.

Over the coming months, we hope to use this

column to look more closely at subjects ranging

from diabetes, cardiovascular health and nutrition to hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause, medications, stress and ageing - and consider

what they may mean for our mouths, our teeth and our long-term wellbeing.

We will also separate scientific evidence from some of the health claims we increasingly encounter online. Oral health research is developing all

the time, and while some associations are well established, others are still emerging.

As healthcare professionals, we think it is important to distinguish between the two.

Prevention is about more than avoiding fillings Perhaps one of the most important changes

The future is joined-up healthcare We believe the future of healthcare will become increasingly integrated.

We will always need experts in individual fields -

whether dentistry, medicine, cardiology, nutrition or

other areas of healthcare - but the person sitting in front of us cannot be divided quite so neatly.

For dental professionals, that means thinking

beyond individual teeth. It means understanding

There is still a great deal to learn about the

REVITALASER: 15 YEARS OF TRUSTED EXPERTISE IN HESWALL

Helping clients look and feel their best, with expertise, innovation and a genuinely personal approach. For more than 15 years, Revitalaser has been part of the Heswall community, building a reputation for advanced skin, laser and aesthetic treatments with a strong emphasis on personal care. Much of the clinic's growth has come through word of mouth and client recommendations, with generations of clients returning time and again and sharing their experience with friends and family. Today, Revitalaser remains a local, independent clinic with an established reputation for combining the latest technology with experienced practitioners and a warm, welcoming team. The clinic has also become known for being ahead of the curve, introducing innovative treatments while ensuring that every new technology is carefully considered and delivered by appropriately trained professionals. Alongside its experienced team of therapists, Revitalaser is proud to have Jaime, its medical specialist, providing a range of advanced medical and aesthetic treatments. His expertise adds an important medical dimension to the clinic, with clients benefiting from professional assessment, treatment planning and an emphasis on safety and suitability. WHAT COMES AFTER WEIGHT LOSS? With the increasing popularity of prescription weight-loss injections and structured weight-management programmes, many people are achieving significant changes in their weight and overall health. But for some, reaching their weight goal is not the end of the journey. After weight loss, clients often want to focus on body shape, muscle definition and skin firmness, particularly around areas such as the abdomen, arms, thighs and waist. This is where Revitalaser's advanced body treatments can complement a healthy lifestyle. EMS and RF technologies can be incorporated into personalised programmes designed to support muscle stimulation and improve the appearance of skin firmness and texture. Used alongside regular exercise, particularly resistance training, good nutrition and hydration, these treatments can help

clients focus on the next stage of their body-confidence journey.

trust, professional advice and personal service.

It is not about replacing the hard work, it is about complementing it.

Located on Telegraph Road in Heswall, Revitalaser welcomes clients from across the Wirral and surrounding areas, many of whom have been introduced to the clinic through personal recommendation.

THE SKIN AFTER WEIGHT LOSS Changes in weight can also affect the appearance and texture of the skin. For clients concerned about laxity, texture, pigmentation or a tired-looking complexion, Revitalaser offers a range of advanced skin treatments. One of the clinic's specialist options is Derma RF, combining microneedling with radiofrequency technology to stimulate the skin's natural renewal processes and encourage collagen production. For an enhanced skin programme, Derma RF can be combined with skin boosters and LED light therapy, depending on individual suitability and treatment goals. The focus is always on creating a naturallooking improvement in the quality, texture and appearance of the skin, rather than changing the way someone looks.

After 15 years, that continued loyalty is something the team is particularly proud of. YOUR NEXT CHAPTER STARTS HERE Whether you are continuing your journey after weight loss, looking to improve muscle tone and definition, or simply want to invest in the health and appearance of your skin, Revitalaser offers a considered approach combining medical expertise, advanced technology and personalised care. Revitalaser, helping you look after the skin and body you have worked hard for.

A TREATMENT PLAN, NOT A QUICK FIX At Revitalaser, there is no expectation that one treatment will suit everyone. Every client is different, which is why consultation is at the heart of the clinic's approach. The team considers the individual's skin, lifestyle, concerns and goals before recommending an appropriate treatment plan. For someone who has lost weight, this might mean combining body sculpting and muscle stimulation with skin-tightening treatments. For another client, the priority may be skin rejuvenation, pigmentation or simply restoring a healthy-looking glow. The aim is to help clients feel confident in their own skin, naturally and at their own pace. WHY REVITALASER? With over 15 years of experience, a multiaward-winning reputation, trusted medical practitioners and an exceptional team of therapists, Revitalaser continues to invest in the latest developments in aesthetic technology.

The Medical Skin Spa 182A Telegraph Road, Heswall, Wirral, CH60 0AJ 0151 342 2409 All treatments are subject to consultation and suitability. Individual results vary. Treatments should complement, not replace, a balanced diet and regular exercise

Pennington Williams:

Supporting the financial wellbeing of Wirral businesses for 50 years It’s not the easiest time to be a small business. Balancing the books alone is an uphill struggle with financial pressures from every direction. Inflation’s driving up dayto-day costs, combined with rising taxation, wages and National Insurance contributions. It’s no surprise that almost half (48%) of 2000 SME business owners surveyed said an unpredictable economy and financial uncertainty are among their biggest barriers to long-term business planning (SME Insights Report 2026). Our accountancy firm has supported Wirral businesses in making sound financial decisions through the ups and downs of the last 50 years, offering reassurance and peace of mind when it’s needed most. To celebrate half a century in business, Pennington Williams director Lisa Bean explains why your business’s financial wellbeing starts with them:

Independent, tailored advice

We’re one of the only remaining independent accountancy firms in Wirral. That means we can offer you a truly personal service, without the prescriptive, cookie-cutter approach that can limit some franchised or acquired firms. We build our services around our clients, listening to your concerns and needs and helping you navigate your income, expenses and long-term business planning, practically and responsibly. We can even be the financial expert on your Board if you need it.

50 years of insight

Businesses have always had to adapt, change and cut their cloth accordingly. The past 30 years alone have seen the dot-com boom and bust, a financial crisis, Brexit and Covid. You’re now being squeezed between inflation and taxation, while wondering what AI and other technological advances will mean for you. We’re not fazed by political change and technology; we’ve seen it all over the past 50 years. We’ve got the level-headedness, experience and insight to help you navigate constantly changing times too.

Planning for peace of mind

Planning and preparation never go out of fashion. Keep on top of that business plan! After the bank’s seen it, many owners file it away and forget about it. You need to review it regularly to ensure it’s still guiding you in the right direction, that you're making timely decisions with the right information, and that it reflects any planned Government changes. For instance, spending £100,000 in the next six months could be a great idea if you’re clear on cash flow, but if not, it could affect your working capital and the future of your business. You may be a new venture or long-established, but if your strength isn’t business planning, we’re here to help.

Wirral optimism

We’re especially passionate about helping small enterprises grow. Wirral businesses have a lot to offer, particularly to others in the area. We’re very supportive of each other. One of our very Wirral niches is advising marine pilots at Woodside who guide the commercial ships down the Mersey. Liverpool and Chester may take the limelight, but Wirral also has a hub of business and entrepreneurship. Since 2011, Wirral has driven 33% of all new business enterprises in the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool Business News). The Wirral International Business Park alone is home to more than 150 businesses! And despite the squeeze, there are reasons to be optimistic, with new opportunities linked to regeneration and urban renewal, particularly on our waterfront.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms ANNE ARCHER HOLISTIC HEALTH

For Anne Archer, holistic health is far more than a profession—it’s a vocation rooted in compassion, curiosity and a lifelong belief that every person has the capacity to move towards greater health and wellbeing. Raised in a family of healthcare professionals, Anne’s understanding of health began at home. Her father, a much-loved local GP, valued medical intervention when needed, but also believed in the body’s capacity to heal. Fresh air, nature, nourishing food and time to recover were part of family life. Her mother, a nurse, grew fruit and vegetables, nurturing Anne’s appreciation of the connection between nature, nutrition and wellbeing. These lessons became the foundation for Anne’s exploration of integrative health, blending current understanding with time-honoured holistic traditions. That philosophy became deeply personal when her daughter, Helena, was born with cerebral palsy. Determined to support Helena’s physical, emotional and developmental wellbeing, Anne began a journey that would change both their lives. “Supporting Helena taught me that health is never just about one symptom or one part of the body,” Anne explains. “Every person is unique, so every treatment should be too. My role is to understand the whole person—their history, lifestyle, experiences and goals—and create a completely personalised approach.” The experience gave Anne the confidence to trust her instincts, advocate for Helena and build a business rooted in purpose, hope and possibility.

Today, Anne helps people reconnect with their health and resilience. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, she considers the body’s systems, emotional wellbeing, lifestyle, environment and lived experience. Among the therapies she has trained in, The BodyTalk System remains one of the most fascinating. “Two people may arrive with the same symptoms, but the underlying reasons can be completely different. Rather than simply asking, ‘What’s wrong?’, we ask, ‘What does this person need most right now?’” Alongside bespoke one-to-one treatments, Anne creates seasonal retreats, treatment days, workplace wellbeing events and holistic celebrations. Trusted specialists in yoga, breathwork, sound healing, shamanic practices, Human Design and belief coding work alongside Anne’s own therapies. Each experience is warm, inclusive and accessible, allowing people to participate at their own pace. “So many of us spend our lives caring for everyone else that we forget to care for ourselves. My retreats and treatment days give people permission to pause, breathe and simply be.” Anne also contributed to the Amazon No. 1 bestseller Embracing the Extraordinary - The Reality of Parenting Neurodivergent Children, sharing her family’s lessons in resilience, hope and looking beyond limitations.

The Renters' Rights Act is here! So, what have we learnt and how can landlords thrive in the new world? Wednesday 25 November 2026 | 6:30pm - 8:30pm | Heswall Hall Last year, more than 100 landlords packed into Heswall Hall to prepare for the arrival of the Renters’ Rights Act. Our headline speaker, Paul Shamplina, shared his experience and practical advice on what landlords needed to know and the feedback was fantastic. So fantastic, in fact, that landlords have been asking us ever since:

“Are you doing another one?” The answer is YES! This year, Northwood Wirral Limited is bringing landlords together once again but this time, the legislation isn't coming. It's here. The Renters’ Rights Act has changed the landscape for landlords, and we have all been learning what the new rules mean in practice. What worked before may no longer be enough, and understanding the legislation is just the starting point.

Paul will be looking at what we should have done, what we have learnt so far, the lessons from the first months of the new legislation and what landlords need to be doing now. But this isn't simply about surviving another piece of legislation. It's about looking ahead.

THE BIG QUESTION

HOW DO YOU

THRIVE? Paul Shamplina

MAKING A DIFFERENCE LOCALLY We're also delighted to be working with Wirral University Teaching Hospitals as our charity partner, helping raise money for the many worthwhile causes supported by the Trust.

The big question for landlords now is:

How do you make property investment work in the new private rented sector? We'll be exploring the practicalities of being a landlord today, how to protect and manage your investment, and how the right advice, services and professional support can help make being a landlord a viable and sustainable investment for the future. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, meet fellow landlords and speak directly to suppliers who provide the services landlords need. And yes, we've got the extras covered too, with goody bags and prizes on the night.

So come along, learn something new, meet other landlords, make useful connections and help us support our local community at the same time. And if there is a question you've been asking yourself since the Renters’ Rights Act came into force, send it to us. We want to hear what landlords are experiencing and what you want Paul and our experts to address on the night.

You survived the introduction of the legislation.
