editor...

Welcome to the Summer Edition, our last digital only magazine. Both digital and printed editions will be available to purchase from Autumn onwards. We have been completely overwhelmed with the response to our first edition and we can’t thank you enough for your kind comments and support. Don’t forget to check if your beautiful dog made it onto the portrait gallery this time. If not, there is always next time so keep sending in your shots.

Editor Diane Tremarco

My own dog, Poppy, our mascot, has had a bout of Panceatitous since the last edition. It started when her deposits had blood in them and frankly went from bad to worse very quickly. It was the first time we had seen our fur baby in any real distress and it wasn’t good at all. Fortunatley, we were sent to Chester Gates, a leading specialist led, multi-disciplinary veterinary referral hospital. They were amazing - even when Poppy left them a little something on the reception floor! Birch Veterinary Centre also offered a fabulous service under the guidence of Amelia Shanklin and Poppy was soon back on her paws. It is such a worry when your best friend is poorly but having insurance in place, a good vet and an equally good out of hours service is essential.

Whilst Poppy was recovering, being treated like a Princess, of course, I noticed just how many nicknames we have for her. Bizarre right? Well, actually, it is quite common - who knew? I thought it might be funny to share them with you: Popsie, Poops, Poopsie, Popsicle, Popsiedoozles, Pops, Popilicious, Princess Pops, Popstar, Doozles (yep really), Doogie (I know!). Now that you know I am completley mad I will leave you to read this edition. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

6 FOCUS ON A PHOTOGRAPHER

SHOOTING FOR GOLD! MY NAME IS NIGEL WALLACE. I AM AN ON-LOCATION DOG PHOTOGRAPHER, BASED IN SUFFOLK. I AM AN EXTEAM GB OLYMPIAN AND HAVE SWAPPED SHOOTING WITH A RIFLE TO SHOOTING WITH A CAMERA. When I was at school, I loved photography, but my chosen sport of rifle shooting soon took over and I was travelling the world, competing for Great Britain until I retired from the sport in 2002. I was lucky enough to compete for my country at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, and I represented England at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games; winning four medals in total, including gold. It wasn’t until we got our Border Collie, Darcy, 8 years ago that I decided to pick up my camera again. I started taking photographs of her and thought that this would be a fantastic job. I realised my dream of becoming a full-time dog photographer when I took early retirement from my job with BT in 2019.

Being an on-location dog photographer means I carry out all of my photoshoot commissions in our beautiful countryside, making full use of the natural light. For me, I love to see dogs running around and exploring the natural surroundings; whether it be in the forest, on a beach or anywhere they love to be. During the photoshoots I capture a range of scenarios, usually starting off with beautiful portrait shots before the dog gets too hot and its tongue starts hanging out! Then, fallen trees become perfect props for stunning jump shots (a particular favourite of mine) as long as the dog is fit and able to do these. Tree stumps are great to sit the dog on for quirky looking-down shots, and my clients particularly love the shots where their dog is peeping around from behind a tree trunk.

During my time as a professional dog photographer, I have been lucky enough to have been featured on both the BBC and ITV, showcasing my dog photography. I was also asked to be part of the TV programme ‘Escape to the Country’, where I taught a lady who was moving into the area how best to photograph dogs. I have also been published in many magazines and newspapers; both local and national. I even had a feature in the American ‘People Magazine’ which is based in New York. Life certainly has been busy. I feel extremely privileged to be doing a job I absolutely love. I get to work with truly remarkable and special dogs and have interesting and fun conversations with their owners as we enjoy ourselves during the photoshoot. Following the shoot, my clients get to choose from a range of stunning, fully edited images, and can decide how they wish to display them from the many choices of products I offer, from beautiful prints to high end wall art. If you would like to know more about my dog photography, please see my website www.nigelwallacephotography.co.uk, or go to my Facebook page Nigel Wallace Photography - Dog Photographer.

The Mowgli Trust sponsors a child in need with every full-time employee at a Mowgli restaurant, they currently have 18 branches throughout the UK and with this number growing all the time, it enables them to help even more disadvantaged children. Claire House supports babies, children and young people who have sadly been diagnosed with terminal conditions. Whilst they cannot change the prognosis, they can ensure these children and families get the care and support they deserve. More children are going to Claire House than ever before – an 84% increase in six years - and they cannot cope with demand. ETHICAL DOG BEDS With stainability at the heart of their business, Camilla Sutton and Holly McMullen founded The Basket Room, an ethical brand of locally crafted, beautiful products made in East Africa. They met on a fashion design course at college learning about production and retail as well as design, and it soon became clear they wanted to embark on a sustainable and ethical business. Inspiration came to Holly after a road trip from South Africa to Nairobi, watching local villages constructing intricate items with ethically sourced materials, she was learning about the industry in a new way. Camilla soon quit her fashion job in London to follow up her dream of a sustainable brand and started to source locally crafted items from Ghana, Kenya, Eswatini, Tanzania and Zambia.

Unfortunately, the UK is currently in the middle of a major dog welfare crisis, more and more dogs are being abandoned or handed into rescue centres. The rise in the amount of ‘puppy farms’, the cost of living and more people returning to work after the pandemic are just some of the reasons for this worrying upsurge. 22 DOG FRIENDLY WEDDINGS

TILL DEATH US DO BARK! YOUR WEDDING DAY, ONE OF THE BEST DAYS OF YOUR LIFE, A DAY TO SHARE WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR BEST FRIEND? YOUR BELOVED POOCH? Well, you can have your best friend at your ceremony. There are many beautiful venues that will cater for your dog and indeed other pets. There is simply no reason to leave your gorgeous pup out of the celebrations. Give your pooch a bath and a good brush, pop a bow tie or ribbon on their collar with your wedding rings attached and you have your very own ring bearer! Another option is to have a collar made from fresh flowers as our photos show. It really is a beautiful way to include your four-legged friend in your special day. The flowers shown where made by Ewer Roberts in Oxton, Wirral. www. ewer-robertsflowers.co.uk.

If flowers are too flamboyant for you, maybe you could put a few charms on your dog’s collar; something for the day and a present to last forever. Hallmark Jewellers, Heswall, Wirral, have a lovely collection of charms instore for both yourself and your dog. www.hallmarkjewellers.co.uk There are things to consider though before going ahead. Make sure you have somebody they know that is available to look after your pooch all day as you will be circulating around your hooman guests. Also, we think it is important for them to have their own bed in a quiet area, after all your dog sleeps during the day at home.

Photographs: www.charlottepalazzo.co.uk

25 Check with your venue regarding them providing a meal for your pet, if they don’t, ensure you bring enough food for the day and try not to let them eat too much human cake. You can always have their own individual, dog friendly cake so they don’t feel left out. Keep them hydrated and ensure they don’t become overwhelmed by the situation; this is why their dog sitter should be known to them so they can spot the signs if your pooch isn’t happy. If it all gets too much their sitter can remove them from the venue for a while or the day. With regards to your big day, you can incorporate some dog elements into your décor. We love the wedding favours from Dogs Trust, who have exclusively designed doggy bride & groom cards and official Dogs Trust lapel pins for your big day. They

ask for a minimum donation of £1 each, all of which goes to help the dogs in their care until they find their forever home. www.dogstrust.org.uk/shopping/wedding-favours/ You could ask your guests to donate to your favourite dog charity, instead of the usual wedding gift. We think it’s the perfect way to make your special day both memorable and beneficial to more dogs. There are so many ways to include your best friend and help other dogs we can’t think of a single reason why you would want them there.

28 INTERVIEW WITH ACTRESS & DIRECTOR TERRI DWYER

A TRUE CONVERT! TERRI SPEAKS ABOUT HER NEW FOUND LOVE FOR DOGS AND LUNA, THE DOG THAT CONVERTED HER

D: What made you get a dog at this stage of your life T: I have been consistently the least doggy person you will ever meet in your life. My eldest son went on and on and on about getting a dog saying I’ll do this and I’ll do that and I’ll do everything! Needless to say, he does absolutely nothing and the dog is very much my dog. So yes, it was down to my son Caiden really, but I don’t regret getting her and with a house full of men she’s by far the nicest thing to me in the house. She’s excited when I come home, she sits at the window wagging her tail, I mean my grumpy teenager and my other son barely speak to me so thank God I did get a dog! D: What breed is she? T: Luna is a Pomsky which is a cross

between a Pomeranian and a Husky. My son assured me, they didn’t need too much exercise - how wrong he was! D: What food do you feed her, because aren’t you a vegetarian or vegan? T: Well, I switch between the two. I feed her on Royal Canine because she often gets an upset tummy, so I went with a brand which is good for digestion. D: What’s her favourite treat? T: Anything (laugh)…She just loves treats! Her recall is great, you only have to share one and she comes bounding up to you. She definitely likes nicer treats. We tried to get the dental bones that they are supposed to chew on to clean their teeth and she wasn’t having any of that! She likes any treat that’s of a descent quality, she won’t eat cheap stuff.

Luna

30 D: Where is your favourite place to walk and where was that fabulous photo taken? T: Royden Park actually, in the summer. I don’t like it in the winter because it becomes like a quagmire but in the summer its lovely. Luna’s off the lead and she can really explore and depending on where you go in the park, because its huge, the landscape changes quite substantially. The picture that I gave you with all the beautiful colours on it kind of runs alongside the rugby pitch I think, but if you go to the other side of the park its completely different it’s like the middle of a forest. I look forward to going to the park, I like the beach too but the problem is she constantly tries to lick the water and that gives her a more poorly tummy. D: What’s her favourite toy? T: It depends on what moods she in - she has a basket where she can help herself. She’ll pick something up then comes and headbutts me. She nudges me and then drops it as if to say come on then, let’s play - I don’t care how busy you are, or what work you have to do! She’s definitely not a catch a ball type of dog, she likes things she can kind of pull or chew like a toy animal or a plastic bone. She definitely prefers toys rather than balls. D: Does she have a good temperament overall? T: Oh my gosh, she’s absolutely gorgeous but she’s not a very good guard dog. That’s not why we got her anyway. Having said that, I don’t know, I think dogs feed off people, so she’s

Luna

very like me sociable, very excitable and loves seeing people. I don’t know if she ever felt any fear for us, I think she might step up to protect the family. Particularity me. When I go out, she sits at the window waiting for me so thankfully we’ve never had to put that to the test. I definitely think dogs take the lead from your emotions and the people that come into my house are friends and family, so she knows that they are welcome. D: Does she sulk? T: No never! While I’m working, as long as she’s in the same room as me, she great. If she isn’t in the same room as me, she lies by the door of the room so I can’t escape without her knowing it but no, she doesn’t sulk, she has an amazing personality. D: Does she have any quirky traits? She licks her lips before we feed her or give her a treat, which is quite cute. It was actually a friend of mine that said, does Luna lick her lips? I was like no and then when I gave her treat, I could see her licking her lips! D: Last question. Do you have a tip for keeping your dog cool in the heat? T: Oooh yes, I do, we have one of those cool mats which is really good and also, we have a bowl for the fridge or freezer that keeps the water cool.

Walkies! STORETON WOODS DOG WALK WITH VANESSA JONES Grade – Easy Distance – 2.5 KM Time – 1 hour Size – 12.5 Hectors Terrain – Easy Parking – Marsh Lane and Rest Hill Road

Storeton woods offers the perfect walk on these sunny days, shaded and with a lovely breeze makes it a popular spot for dog walkers in the summer months. The route myself and Silva have taken on our walk took us on a figure of eight loop through Storeton woods and over the road into Hancock woods, taking care to make sure Silva was on lead while crossing between the woods as Rest Hill Road can be busy with fast flowing traffic. There are plenty of bins surrounding the woods making it easy to dispose of any dog waste and lots of signposts and mapping to ensure you always find you way. Picnic areas and benches are dotted around the woods if a stop to enjoy the views and cooling breeze takes your fancy. There are many different routes to keep you and you dog entertained offering a variety of terrain. Due to Storeton woods being an old sandstone quarry if you go off the beaten track you can find a more challenging walk meandering through the various undulations. Storeton woods has a fascinating history including having its very own dinosaur named after it. In the 1830s the first of 5 footprints of a Triassic Chirotherium Storetonese were found. Buried for over 200 million years, of which you can find on display in Liverpool’s World History Museum. These days Hidden away in the woods carved into the Sandstone there is a Chirotherium Storetonese Dinosaur, will you be brave enough to find it? The Quarry’s Sandstone can be found in Birkenhead Town Hall, Sankey Viaduct and even in the cladding of the Empire State Building in New York. The Quarry was eventually filled in using the stone from the excavation of the Birkenhead tunnel and Storeton woods was able to bloom. It’s easy to see why Storeton woods is a popular choice for walkers, surrounded by Oak, Sycamore, Ash and Beech trees it’s a perfect hive of activity for wildlife from buzzards to butterflys. The views over Storeton Village, and further over to the Clwydian Range make this walk even more special. Although this is one of the shorter walks available locally Silva and I really enjoyed it. The sun beaming through trees, the endless possibilities of paths to choose, the sounds of the birds in the trees and not to mention an endless supply of sticks for Silva really does make this walk a firm favourite with the both of us.

Thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightning... WAYS TO DEAL WITH YOUR DOG DURING A THUNDERSTORM The delights of the warmer weather often brings about thunderstorms, great for your garden, maybe not so good if you have an anxious dog. Not all dogs are nervous of storms, as the drop in temperature and the humidity increases some sense a change in the weather. Many dogs just hear the loud clap and as with humans when we hear an unknown loud bang, their natural instinct is to be fearful. We would recommend trying to condition your dog with pre recorded storm noises, initially having them on quietly and gradually increasing the volume over time so they became accustomed to the sounds. This method is ideal for a puppy who hasn’t yet experienced thunder. The best thing you can do for your pooch during stressful times is to remain exactly the same, completely calm as if you haven’t noticed the loud thunder. Keep them engaged by playing with them, let them see you aren’t bothered, this will encourage them to be the same. Blocking out the lights and sounds by drawing curtains and turning on music or the tv can also help to distract them. Classical

music can often do the trick, possibly due to the increasing tempo and sounds or maybe dogs just prefer classic music! When your pooch is feeling scared, they often run to where they consider a safe place, please make sure one is available. It could be their basket, try draping over a towel or blanket and place their favourite toys in for comfort. They may run behind the sofa or under a bed, again placing some of their familiar items there could help them calm down quicker. Don’t however, be tempted to comfort them as this can reaffirm their own anxiety and make things worse. A soothing word or two is fine but don’t try to cuddle them or hold on to them. You could try a Thunder vest, designed to put on before a storm; the gentle, constant pressure provides comfort and can calm your dog. Whatever method you choose, above all else, ensure your dog can not escape outside, as fear is likely to make them bolt, making them more anxious, with the possibility they may get lost. Keep all doors and windows shut!

22ND FEBRUARY

Alfie. The first breakfast. It’s always going to be the worst. You get up after the most horrendous night. You see his bowl and you break. You feed the others and wish so bad that he was still here. My Alfie went to sleep early hours of this morning. On heart day. He’s taken my heart and I’ll always have his with me x forever my valentine. My boy was the most loyal. I loved him more than anything and I know he loved me right back. We did everything together and he knew me like nothing else. I’m broken and a part of me will never be fixed. I miss him and I want him back I don’t even know how to deal with this. My boy has gone and it will never be the same We stayed with you until the end, telling you stories of how you will meet loads of new dogs and you have to share and be nice. I stroked his face after he’d gone and said sorry that I couldn’t save him. If I could, my love, I would have kept you strong and kept you here. My Alfie, pain free now son xx

One whole week without our boy. I’ve cried every single day and yesterday it was nonstop. It is the worst feeling I’ve ever experienced. I take his little box with me downstairs in the morning and back upstairs for bedtime. I took him to Stockport today, my first day back to some sort of quiet normality and work. I’ve just been sad. Empty. It’s so quiet. Everything. Driving. Alfie would normally scream the car down if I didn’t touch his head. Hoovering is now done without him trying to chew the thing to pieces. Mornings are the worst and then through the night where he would normally be up and down on the bed, under the quilt or wherever he wanted to be. Roxy and Cooper have comforted each other and we’ve been for a few walks but Cooper has bad legs so he hasn’t been out much at all. Just sad, it’s not the same for us and never will be again but we speak of him every single day

14TH FEBRUARY The boy is home. Can’t thank Halifax Pet Cremation Service enough. I messaged them over the weekend because we knew it wouldn’t be long. Karen rang them this morning and they picked him up from the vets and was ready for us to collect by 3.30pm. I didn’t want my boy sitting in a freezer for days waiting to be collected. We will get through it and my boy will never be forgotten x Alfie you’ve broke my heart and I’ll forever miss you just like your other mum will. You are now pain free and hopefully happy playing over the bridge xx

28TH FEBRUARY Two whole weeks. I took you earlier on that day to the vets and knew you weren’t ready. You came home, sat with Roxy and then the rest of us sat with you. Then a look you gave me and I knew then. Always taking the limelight and valentines will always forever be your day son. #MyForeverValentine

1ST MARCH Wish he would come back. 18TH FEBRUARY Just did another little cry. Said I miss you son. Looked outside and saw a woodpecker, underneath was a little Robin. Whether you believe in it or not, some things help. Believe what you need to get through.

25TH MAY

6TH JUNE

Been a right rough time this year so far. Really difficult for me mentally. There have been times that I’ve thought I can’t get out of the hole and there will be times they will still happen. The day goes from tears to memories to laughing. Feeling guilty for laughing and then just a circle of emotion. I’ve lost my best friend of nearly ten years in Alfie and my hero of over 44 years in my Grandpops in the space of two months and I know people have worse things going on. But this has been going on for me. But today we now know this The house has been completed. We have a date to collect the keys. I can’t wait to move in to our first proper home with my wife Karen Carter after 7 years it’s finally just ours. Me and you. The joys, you lucky thing you! Alfie and Grandpops & GJ will be coming too of course xx

It’s proper pretty here and it’s given us some great memories over the last three plus years but I tell you… I won’t miss it at all As long as I know Alfie and grandpops will follow us then I couldn’t care less about this house. The biggest love hate relationship ever!

1ST JUNE Miss you son x

14TH JUNE 4 months without the boy 2 months without the grump Jeez miss them both so much. Alfie would love the new house. Little wally. Neighbours would certainly know he’s around. It’s weird hey? When it happens, you think there’s no way you can go on without them. The pain is unbelievable. You do what’s right for you and your healing. One minute, hour, day at a time. The tears do get less often. I didn’t believe anyone at the time. I thought I’d always be sad. The hole they’ve left will never be filled but the memories do make me smile now. I miss them. I’d do anything to have them back but grandpops is with GJ and Alfie will be pansying around rainbow bridge pretending to be hard. The world keeps spinning as normal and sometimes I just want it to stop, look to the skies and cry a bit. New, exciting times ahead though and grandpops will have been proud and Alfie is by my side anyway #MyForeverValentine #MyHero the reason I love Cadburys

Pancreatitis PANCREATITIS IN DOGS CAN BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IF LEFT UNTREATED, IT CAN START SUDDENLY AND IS FAIRLY COMMON SO KNOWING MORE ABOUT THE DISEASE AND ITS SYMPTOMS CAN BE BENEFICIAL TO BOTH YOU AND YOUR POOCH. The pancreas helps to digest food and when your dog is suffering from a bout of pancreatitis it can cause severe pain and or vomiting and diarrhoea (sometimes bloody) leaving your dog feeling extremely poorly. Before these symptoms appear, your dog may go off their food perhaps not eating at all. You may also notice them trying to relieve the pain in their tummies by stretching or curling up. We recommend if your dog has any of these ailments, to contact your vet immediately. Pancreatitis can be controlled with pain relief and anti-sickness medication however if your pooch is really sick, they may need to be placed on a drip and kept in for a few days for intensive treatment and care. Ensuring your dog doesn’t eat high fat foods can help with pancreatitis and with weight loss. Being overweight is another factor that can contribute to the disease. It is also something

to look out for after a recent bout of illness or surgery. Your vet will assess the severity using ultrasound and blood tests. Once diagnosed, treatment can begin. Whilst most dogs make a full recovery, some can suffer from reoccurring attacks, maintaining their low fat diet (ask your vet for advice) will certainly help minimise further attacks as will keeping them active and fit. Whilst we can never be sure of a diagnosis without a vet, it is important to know the symptoms of pancreatitis as early detection and the correct medication can stop this disease becoming more serious. You know your dog and you know when they are ill or in pain. Always consult your vet as the quicker they get treatment the better their chances of a speedy recovery.

44 WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS?

ORGANIC DOG FOOD ALL LIVESTOCK AND CROPS ON ORGANIC FARMS ARE FREE FROM PESTICIDES AND SYNTHETIC FERTILIZERS. What is organic dog food? As with human food, 95% of the contents must be organic, the remaining 5% must be made up of natural, approved ingredients for it to be sanctioned by an organic certification body. Organic farms are extremely thorough, ensuring all stages of farming meet strict standards with the guarantee that the food can be traced. No animals are given growth hormones or antibiotics, they too are fed only with organic food, their welfare being top priority for the farmer. The pros of organic dog food. Many dog foods on the market are highly processed and full of chemicals which can lead to your pooch becoming ill with diarrhoea, skin infections, or worse. Changing to an all-organic diet can help reduce these symptoms as they avoid over-processing and dangerous pesticides.

As the products are not highly processed and cooked at low temperatures to retain maximum nutrients, it can help with digestion and weight loss, thus leading to better overall health. The cons of organic dog food. The main disadvantage to organic dog food is the cost. The whole process is more expensive for the farmer and production. Unfortunately this extra cost is reflected in the price of the food. The second con to take into account is the lack of availability; authenticated, organic dog food is harder to find. You may have to go online or to a pet supplier that specialises in organic food for a broader range. Of course, the availability will increase with demand, so if you want a healthier happier dog, buy organic; with no animal by-products or other nasties, your pooches’ dinner will be both delicious and good for them.

OVERHEATING

Heat exhaustion in dogs is extremely dangerous and could lead to serious problems if left untreated. Unlike humans, dogs have very few sweat glands, instead they pant, open mouthed, tongue out, to cool down. The terrifying consequences of overheating can result in your dog becoming unresponsive, they may have diarrhoea or start vomiting and shaking. Also check their gums for changing colour. All of these symptoms could lead to convulsions or worse if untreated. The first signs are excessive panting as they try to reduce their body temperature however when panting isn’t enough you will need to intervene! Immediately take them out of the sun, into shade, preferably with good airflow, for example near a fan. Give them some water, never force them to drink but if they are not responding, dribble a little on their tongue. Next thing to do is dampen some towels and loosely drape them on your pooch, of course if you have a pond, pool or you are near water, let your dog gently walk in to cool off their paws, this will help with overall body heat. If your dog is not responding, call the vet immediately to let them know you are on our way, they can be ready to help your beloved pooch. We believe prevention is the best way forward, there are many things you

can do to keep your dog’s temperature stable in the heat. Never leave your dog in the car, even with the windows down, the temperature is unbearable for them, if you do need to take them out in the car on a warm day, ensure all windows are open and check the traffic news, being stuck in traffic can be just as hot. Be aware of walking times, walking very early in the morning or after the sun has set are ideal times to walk your dog however if it is very humid it wont harm your pooch to be kept in a well ventilated house for the day. Water is extremely import, there are many collapsible bowls available to purchase or just bring a lightweight, plastic bowl and a bottle of water to top up their fluid intake at regular intervals. Remember hydration is key for your dog to avoid overheating. Try not to over excite them and if they want to play take the game inside, keeping them calm and taking frequent breaks to stay as cool as possible. Stay in the shade as much as possible, find a shaded part of your garden or on walks, your pooch wears a fur coat and doesn’t need the extra heat from the sun. We all love our best friend and summer. Follow these simple measures and you will both be able to enjoy the hotter months to come.

46 A DOG FRIENDLY PUB

THE RED FOX WE CHAMPION ANY EATERY OR PUB THAT WELCOMES DOGS AND THE RED FOX REALLY STANDS OUT FOR ITS LOVE OF DOGS ALONGSIDE ITS EXCELLENT FOOD AND AWARD WINNING DRINKS. We recently dined there and as both a coeliac and dog lover, our Editor was perfectly poised to give an honest opinion. A beautiful, imposing structure of brick and sandstone built in the latter half of the 19th century greets you when you enter the grounds of The Red Fox. Set in impressive, landscaped gardens with the stunning Cheshire countryside as a backdrop you cannot help but fall in love before you have even set foot in the building. There are a selection of rooms inside, with quieter corners and space for larger parties. Open fires, wooden floors and carefully selected pre-loved furniture complete a familiar, homely feel. The food is nothing short of delicious. The Red Fox pride themselves on only using quality, fresh ingredients and boast a daily menu of British classics with influences from around the world. Their tasty Sunday roasts are not to be missed; they also cater for coeliacs with an extensive range of gluten free options. I had the Sunday roast, which was piping hot, a great portion and left me wanting more. I also had a choice of dessert – a rare thing for a coeliac! After much deliberation I went for the sticky

toffee pudding which turned out to be a great choice! Our dog, Poppy, is a small/medium sized cross Yorkshire Terrier/Shih Tzu or Shorkie as they are more commonly known. She is extremely friendly with humans, but not so with dogs. However, to our surprise, amongst the many well-behaved dogs that day was a huge Doberman sat on the table opposite. We exchanged pleasantries with the owners Jake and Daisy and as they left, they brought their dog to meet ours. Poppy took a fancy to Gorgeous George who was perfectly calm and very handsome, so much so I asked the owners to send a picture of him – I simply couldn’t resist sharing him with you all. The Red Fox, as you have gathered, is dog friendly. Your best friend can join you anywhere in the huge bar. They also host a monthly dog walk on the first Sunday of the month; starting with coffee in the pub before embarking on a two to three hour walk and of course back to the Red Fox for one of their legendary Sunday roasts. Sadly, I can’t walk that far, but I am building up my stamina and hope it won’t be too long before I can join them.

50 POLICE DOGS WITH STEPH ALLINSON

JAX TO THE RESCUE IN APRIL THIS YEAR, SHORTLY AFTER MY FIRST INTERVIEW I WAS STRUCK WITH THE WORST NEWS EVER. MY K9 WORK PARTNER, LUTHER, HAD SUFFERED AN INJURY TO HIS BACK LEGS WHICH HE WOULDN’T RECOVER FROM. My world crumbled and my heart shattered. I knew I had to do the right thing and give him rest and peace and let him go to heaven. I owed him a peaceful dignified passing as he had given me his all throughout our years. I came home and sat in his kennel sobbing uncontrollably whilst clinging onto his collar. Most people would never even consider getting another dog so soon, but for me, it’s my job, without a K9 partner I felt lost. Over the next couple of days I told my Sergeant I was ready to start looking. I needed a focus to help my broken heart. My training team quickly got on the hunt for a new dog capable of being a General Purpose dog. It’s not an easy task. Myself and my instructor travelled the country looking for dogs from various different breeders and trainers.

One of the last places we visited I met Jax. Jax is a 13 month old Belgium malionis bitch who weighs in at 26kg a whole 20 kg lighter than Luther. I was instantly struck with her presence and her fiesty side. I knew she looked amazing and deserved a chance. She had alot of basic training already such as obidence and knew how to search for her ball. She was driven and focused and well socialised. All good qualities. I brought her home on trial and she instantly settled in to my life. Otis adores her, which makes life with 2 dogs alot easier. Jax started training week one, after showing her how to search a building for the decoy she had it cracked within the first few tries. This was great to see. The task that takes the longest is tracking. Its intense and we have to

teach the dog to start using her nose. We have started laying scent on the ground with hotdogs in, helping her to associate sausages with human scent, eventually the hotdogs will become fewer and she will be following human scent to either the reward of a ball or a bite. Jax is already locating decoys during a wood search and the more times she does this exercise she will get better and more confident. She seems to really enjoy working and pleasing me and is always very proud when she wins her ball reward. We have around 8 weeks to train Jax and shes already showing brilliant potential. Each training exercise is rewarded with a Kong ball, which she is very driven for. This will develop as she grows and she will eventually be rewarded with a bite on a sleeve. The one thing I have noticed about Jax is how quickly she bonded. She loves me already and the feeling is mutual. I catch her looking at me alot. Already no one else matters to her. I can already tell she will be protective of me. This weekend I have had Jax and Otis at Dogfest at Tatton Park, we have introduced Jax to the crowd and explained her training programme. This was a great experience for her as she’s seen crowds of people and dogs and she remained confident and focused throughout.

I am already looking forward to week 2. I love to see her growing and learning and it’s also a really nice experience for me to be involved In training her. I can mold her into the Police dog I want her to be and if, or should I say when she passes we will be able to look forward to a long career together. Meanwhile, Otis comes along and spends the day socialising with the team and the other dogs. Myself and Otis worked some overtime a couple of weeks ago and we were involved in a warrant with Cheshire and Merseyside Police. Otis located seven thousand pounds worth of cash concealed in a car boot. I was thrilled with him, so was the rest of the team on duty that day, and Otis was just happy to get his tennis ball. Some people tell me to try and keep my guard up when it comes to the working dogs to prevent any heartbreak when they pass away or fail. To me, this is impossible. I give the dogs my all, I love them with all my heart, I love every cuddle and every walk or training exercise. I truly believe this is why we are so well bonded together. Already there’s a lot of love. I hope next time I write I can tell you about Jax passing her license. Fingers crossed for me.

65 CARING FOR YOUR DOG’S TEETH

STUFF VETS LIKE FROM VETTY MCVETFACE (A PRACTICING VET)

We vets take great satisfaction in pulling out rotten teeth. We always feel sorry for these animals that have clearly had toothache for a while but cannot tell their owners. Pets will eat through oral pain because it is a constant, dull ache and if they avoid chewing with the particularly painful teeth, they can eat reasonably well. Videos of dogs eating have been slowed down to observe how they are actually eating. A lot of the time, they are picking the food up with their tongue and chucking it to the back of their mouth where they just swallow it without chewing. Obviously, some of the time this is because they are greedy animals that just want to get the food in their stomach as fast as possible. However, in pets that used to take their time and chew biscuits, they think this action is to bypass the sore teeth. The same can be said for those that chew on one side of their mouth only. We have lost count of the number of times we have performed dental work and the owners will say afterwards that they had no idea their dog had toothache but they are so much happier now so they must have done! If anyone has ever had a sore tooth, it really is an unpleasant

experience and something we would not wish upon our pets. There are a few breeds of dog that have worse teeth than others. Anything that has a smaller mouth than it should has the same number of teeth (42), squashed into a much smaller space. Along with the typical brachycephalic breeds such as frenchies and pugs, this also includes chihuahuas, Shih Tzus and Yorkshire terriers. In all these situations, it is common to find that the teeth overlap over each other, or some are even turned sideways to fit in. This means that there are many tight, small pockets for food to collect in and the gums slowly recede, causing the roots of the teeth to become covered in tartar. For some reason, dachshunds and miniature poodles seem to have terrible teeth too despite having longer snouts. In a lot of these dogs, the little incisor teeth at the front are the first to become rotten and wobbly. These are the easiest teeth to remove as they only have one, small root. Any tooth that is wobbly is very satisfying to remove - it tends to take us minimal effort and you know you are helping the dog in removing something painful and irritating.

66 The next teeth that tend to become rotten are the smaller premolar teeth. These are the few teeth directly behind the big canine ‘fang’ tooth. The small ones have two roots so we have to drill them in half before getting them out. At this point, we may have had a bit of a struggle removing one of the roots of the premolars if one root was rotten and the other one was fine, but at least this gives us a sense of achievement. This would be where we want ordinary dental work to stop as the rest of the teeth are an absolute pain to remove, most of the time. The larger premolars or molars near the back of the mouth have 3 roots that you have to split up in the correct way to make sure you don’t leave part of one root attached to another. Sometimes we have to remove these teeth because the tooth is so covered in tartar and is very rotten. In these scenarios, we may even be able to remove the tooth without splitting the roots - something that will very much bring a smile to our faces. Unfortunately, sometimes the tooth needs to come out because just one of the roots are unhealthy due to a tooth root abscess, for example. In these situations, it can be a lot trickier to get the more healthy root(s) out and we can spend a long time putting pressure on the root in the correct way to break the ligament that keeps the tooth in place. If we get the root out whole, we have a sense of triumph and hold it up with a ‘ta-daaaa’. Occasionally, the root will snap and we have a much more difficult job of hunting the root out and removing it. The most reliable way of doing this is to perform a ‘surgical extraction’ where we make a flap of gum over the root, drill away the bone surrounding the root and then lift it out. This is the same way that we remove the large, canine tooth as the root of

the canine is actually even bigger than the part of the fang that you can see in the dog’s mouth. This process can still take 15-20 mins to remove just one tooth. If you have to do this with several teeth in the mouth then suddenly it can take 2 hours to perform a dental on one dog. This is why we are so happy when any of these bigger teeth are already wobbly and we can remove them easily! The worst dogs to perform dentals on are the larger breeds and, for some inexplicable reason, greyhounds. In a lot of these dogs, the roots are ‘ankylosed’ into the jaw. This essentially means that they are cemented in place and are very, very difficult to remove even if they are rotten and painful at the surface. If the tooth is fractured with the pulp cavity exposed, it has to be removed as that is very sore. However, it is an otherwise healthy tooth with two other roots, so it can take 45 minutes just to remove the one tooth. In any situation with a dental, we find it terribly amusing and exasperating when owners ask us ‘not to remove teeth, unless it is really necessary’. What do you think we do? Pull out healthy teeth for fun? Trust me, there is absolutely no way we would ever remove a tooth unless it was necessary! I have had to tag-team dental procedures with other vets before because there were just too many difficult teeth to remove. They really did need to come out but we just couldn’t cope without a break. There is a phrase ‘if in doubt, take it out’ that we will very much ignore when it comes to teeth. If there is any doubt and we think the tooth can be saved, we will leave it in the mouth to save ourselves some time, wrist ache, sweating and swearing.

67 This is even more so the case when it comes to the worst of teeth to remove - the lower canine tooth (I’m pretty sure every vet and nurse reading this just nodded their heads in agreement). As well as having a very large root, that root tip tends to stop only millimetres before the bottom of the jaw bone. This means that it is surprisingly easy to fracture a dog or cat jaw at this point. Our heart sinks if we see that this tooth needs to come out and we have to ring an owner in advance to tell them the risks of removing the tooth. Most of the time, we eventually get it out safely, but it takes a lot of time and patience. A few of my colleagues and I have fractured a jaw in the process of removing this tooth. A lot of the time, the jaw will heal itself with soft food and painkillers and the pet will barely notice because that tooth was so sore to begin with anyway. Sometimes though, the jaw needs to be repaired with a plate or wire. Thus, if the tooth is actively wobbly and rotten to begin with, we can be much happier in removing it. Dental procedures will always include a scale and polish of the teeth that are to remain in the mouth. Cracking off the chunks of tartar and scaling the tooth back to a white colour bring us joy too, especially knowing that the dog’s breath will smell much sweeter! When we see the tartar starting to build up in your dog’s mouth, we will often recommend a scale and polish only, to reduce the chance of teeth needing to be removed in the future. To prevent tartar build up as much as possible, we would always recommend trying to brush your dog’s teeth from when it is very young. If this is not possible, there are certain powders you can put in the food or gel you can spread on the teeth or in the water. After any dental procedure, we would recommend this again if you haven’t already done so, to try to prevent any further procedures in the future. There are certain dental chews on the market too which can be very good for those teeth that are used for chewing but the incisors and canines are left out of this and the chews are very high in calories. Chewing on bones can be useful but we see more fractured teeth or splinters of bone in the gut causing issues in these scenarios so we don’t tend to recommend it.

Dental procedures in dog’s obviously require an anaesthetic and this will make owners reluctant to book their dog’s in, especially in the older animals. It is always better to sort the problem out whilst the dog is otherwise healthy and well. If the teeth get so sore and infected that the dog just cannot face eating anymore, then we have no choice but to perform the dental procedure. By this time, the anaesthetic risk becomes higher because they are even older and may have concurrent illnesses, as well as dehydration from not eating for the prior few days. Older patients tend to have a drip for the procedure and we perform pre-operative bloodwork to check that their organ function is still good before giving any drugs. This keeps the risk to a minimum and is a very good idea, despite the extra cost that is sometimes involved. I cannot remember ever losing a dog during a dental procedure - even the 15 year old dog with a bad heart murmur made it through. There have been a couple of times that the dog has ‘crashed’ and we had to perform CPR, remove just the worst of the teeth and wake it up quickly but they have gone on to make a full recovery. Obviously, there are always exceptions and animals can have reactions to an aneasthetic but that risk is about 1 in 10,000. Would you prefer to live the rest of your life with tooth ache or take that risk though? People are also reluctant to pay for dental work because they think that their dog is fine as it is. Given the length of time your pet is under anaesthetic for, having us work on it’s teeth, dentals are often very reasonably priced as we know that if we charged for our time more appropriately, the costs would be too high for people to book them in. It makes us very happy when we have turned a sore mouth into a healthy mouth and owners come in for their post op check 10 days later and tell us how happy their dog now is. I often think we should have a ‘dental book’ to show clients to persuade them to have dental work performed on their dog, full of previous owner comments about how their 12 year old now acts like a puppy and, of course, that their breath doesn’t smell anymore.
