Welcome to Mountview’s Autumn/Winter Season
Founded in 1945, Mountview is one of the UK’s leading drama schools with 400 students studying on foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Our training covers acting, musical theatre, actor musicianship, theatre direction, creative producing, musical direction, writing musicals and theatre production arts. Courses are validated by University of East Anglia and accredited by Drama UK.
We produce around 28 public productions in theatres across London and the south east each year. On top of this, each week 300 young people attend Saturday and weekday evening classes, half receiving bursaries. We couldn’t do this work without your ongoing help as audience members and supporters. Auschwitz survivor Peter Singer is ready to make his mark. In this epic fable he transforms from destitute refugee to slum landlord to saviour of the capital’s homeless against the pulsating backdrop of post-war London. Loosely based on the real life story of notorious racketeer Peter Rachman, Singer is about remembrance, reinvention and resurrection. Max Key trained on the National Theatre Directors’ Course and works in theatre, film and opera. Max has directed at the Arcola, Royal Opera House, Lyric Hammersmith and the National Theatre. His recent work for Mountview includes Vernon God Little and Jerusalem.

In the hundred days between VE day and VJ day, a group of women in Nottingham try and pick up the pieces of a life touched by war. They are haunted by the past and by the future. Touched is presented by our first ever cohort of Actor Musicians. Paul-Ryan Carberry is an actor and director and graduated from Mountview in 2008. Recent directing credits include: Healing Wounds (Luton/Hat Factory), The Outback Games (Edinburgh Fringe, Nominated for MTN Award for Best New Musical), Star Jumps Are Not Essential (Lost Theatre) and Into The Woods (Mountview).

A chamber musical in four parts, First Lady Suite sheds light onto the oft-forgotten lives of the wives of America’s Presidents. Focussing on important real-life private turning points for these very public women, this is a poignant and soaring musical from acclaimed composer and lyricist Michael John LaChiusa (Hello Again, The Wild Party). Matt Ryan’s recent productions include Dogfight (Southwark Playhouse), A Catered Affair (Royal Academy of Music), Violet (LSMT), La Cage Aux Folles (Aarhus Theatre, Denmark) and for Mountview: Pal Joey, A Winter’s Tale, The York Realist, and The Rink.

Welcome to 1930s gangland Chicago and Hoods, an all-singing, all-dancing brand new musical. Mixing classic Rat Pack standards such as That Ol’ Black Magic, You Make Me Feel So Young and That’s Life with original songs, this show is a reworking of the Robin Hood legend and tells the tale of gangster Robbo Cappelli and his merry band of hoodlums. It’s a city under mob rule, where you put one foot wrong and you’re looking down the barrel of a gun. But if you’ve got the brains, you can make a real killing… Stephen Jameson is the Artistic Director and Principal of Mountview where he has directed Love’s Labour’s Lost (which toured to the Globe Theater Germany), Curtains, Dreaming America and The Producers. Before joining Mountview he was Associate Director at LAMDA where he directed over 70 productions.

Eight teenagers are conscripted to the army. They endure gruelling training and are sent to fight an unknown war. Comradeship and conflict, bravery and brotherhood are explored in this powerful drama by Rory Mullarkey, winner of the 2014 George Devine Award. Katie Henry trained at the National Theatre Studio and the Orange Tree Theatre. She was recently Associate Director on the UK & Ireland tour of War Horse and directed Grandpa Joe’s Giant Storytelling Bed at the Southbank Centre. At Mountview she has directed Her Naked Skin.

At Elsinore the young prince Hamlet is a restless teen wracked with loathing for his unscrupulous father who is determined to send him away. Ophelia is grief-stricken and Laertes is hungry for power. Is everything rotten in the state of Denmark? Audrey Sheffield was a 2015 Connections Director for the National Theatre Connections Festival 2015, and is co-facilitator for the NT New Views London hub 2015–2016 at the National Theatre. She recently directed a new play in response to Oresteia at the Almeida, and is currently developing The Scar Test for Untold Theatre and Grey Man by Lulu Raczka for this year’s Shakespeare in Shoreditch Festival.

Mountview’s first ever cohort of Actor Musicians presents this musical revue of the songs of master chanteur Jacques Brel. Evoking the smoky cabarets and candlelit jazz clubs of Paris, romance, humour and morality are all explored in this enchanting show. Chris Larner is an actor, writer and director. He has written two musicals, The Translucent Frogs of Quuup and On the Island of Aars, and one-man show An Instinct for Kindness, which won a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival, transferred to Trafalgar Studios and has toured extensively both nationally and internationally. At this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, he wrote and directed The Frida Kahlo of Penge West and co-wrote and directed Vagabonds, My Phil Lynnot Odyssey.

Engage!
Saturday and evening classes for young people If you are aged 24 or under, have a creative curiosity and a passion to perform, the Mountview ENGAGE programme is for you. Regular weekend and evening classes offer the opportunity to work with professional directors, actors and choreographers in energetic workshops and performances. Acting and Song & Dance classes for 6 to 11-year-olds on Saturday mornings are fun and interactive sessions which explore early creativity. For 12 to 18-year-olds developing their creative skills there are Acting classes on Saturday mornings which explore text, physical theatre, digital media and devised work and are a chance for hands-on theatre experience.
On Saturday afternoons Street Dance workshops explore the different styles and influences of urban and contemporary dance whilst Performance Mix combines song writing, singing, dance and musical theatre. The Young Performer’s Company is the flagship of the ENGAGE programme. Taking place on Monday evenings, the YPC is the place to be for the next generation of performers. Working with a range of professional theatre practitioners the Young Performers’ Company provides a platform for honing skills, exploring ideas and creating and developing innovative theatre alongside likeminded people.
