Welcome to Mountview’s autumn/winter season.
Founded in 1945, Mountview is one of the UK’s leading drama schools with 400 students studying on foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Our vocational training covers all aspects of theatre arts including acting, musical theatre, actor musicianship, theatre direction, creative producing, musical direction, stage and production management, lighting sound and digital production and design and applied arts. Courses are validated by University of East Anglia and accredited by Drama UK. Each week around 300 young people from our home borough of Haringey
and across north London take part in ENGAGE, our thriving Saturday and evening creative performance programme. Half of these receive bursaries for free or reduced-price places. For more info see page 14. We produce around 28 public productions in theatres across London and the south east each year, performing to a total audience of over 12,500 people. WORLD STAGE PREMIERE Gilbert Grape is stuck in his tiny hometown with his obese mother, disabled brother, hateful sisters, a married lover and a dead-end job. In other words, everything is eating Gilbert Grape. Alex Howarth has been given special permission from the author to adapt this acclaimed and much-loved novel for the stage for the first time for Mountview. Alex Howarth graduated from Mountview’s Theatre Directing course last year, and has had huge critical success with his company Patch of Blue, with Edinburgh shows, Beans on Toast and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

In small-town Texas, Vernon Little stands accused of a mass shooting at his school. He didn’t do it, but his fingerprints are on a gun. And his alibi stinks. And his best friend Jesus, who did do it, is dead. Vernon wants to escape, but in a town thriving on the media circus that’s arrived, it’s proving difficult. Tanya Ronder’s adaptation of DBC Pierre’s Booker Prize-winning novel lays bare the effects of a rolling-news, reality-TV-obsessed vulture culture. Max Key has directed at the Arcola, Royal Opera House, Lyric Hammersmith and NT Connections. His recent work for Mountview includes Jerusalem and This Child.

A leading lady is dead at the curtain call and her killer is on the loose – must the show go on? From two masters of musical theatre Kander and Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago) comes Curtains, an all singing, all dancing murder mystery that mercilessly sends up whodunnits in an affectionate pastiche of musical theatre folk. Stephen Jameson is the Artistic Director and Principal of Mountview, and last year directed Dreaming America and The Producers. Before joining Mountview he was Associate Director at LAMDA where he directed over 70 productions.

In 1913, women of all ages and all classes unite in the fight to gain the vote. Lady Clara Cain meets young seamstress Eve Douglas. As tension builds towards World War I and the suffrage movement faces violent opposition the personal and political become passionately entwined. In 2008 Her Naked Skin was the first original play by a female playwright to be performed on the National Theatre’s Olivier stage, 44 years after the theatre opened. Katie Henry trained at the National Theatre Studio and at the Orange Tree Theatre. She is currently Associate Director on the UK & Ireland Tour of War Horse and most recently directed Grandpa Joe's Giant Storytelling Bed at the Southbank Centre.

This academic year marks Mountview’s 70th birthday, and this season we return to the first show we produced in our Crouch End home. The Importance of Being Earnest is a classic British farce, mocking Victorian ideas about marriage and the pursuit of love as two friends attempt to woo their women. This production of Oscar Wilde’s best-loved play, ripe with cut-glass wit, is a satirical look at a contemporary upper crust. Rebecca Frecknall was the 2013 Resident Director at the National Theatre Studio and has just directed the Parallel Production of A Streetcar Named Desire for the Young Vic. This year she has worked as Assistant Director with the RSC and Staff Director at the National Theatre.

SHORT COURSES ENGAGE: SATURDAY AND EVENING CLASSES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE If you are aged 24 or under, have a creative curiosity and a passion to perform, the Mountview ENGAGE programme is for you. Regular weekend and evening classes offer the opportunity to work with professional directors, actors and choreographers in energetic workshops and performances. Acting and Song & Dance classes for 6 to 11-year-olds on Saturday mornings are fun and interactive sessions which explore early creativity. For 12 to 18-year-olds developing their creative skills there are Acting classes on Saturday mornings which explore text, physical theatre, digital media and devised work and the chance for some hands-on theatre experience.
On Saturday afternoons Street Dance workshops explore the different styles and influences of urban and contemporary dance whilst Performance Mix combines song writing, singing, dance and musical theatre. The Young Performers’ Company is the flagship of the ENGAGE programme. Taking place on Monday evenings, the YPC is the place to be for the next generation of performers. Working with a range of professional theatre practitioners the Young Performers' Company provides a platform for honing skills, exploring ideas and creating and developing innovative theatre alongside likeminded people.
