We believe a Mount St. Mary education should be accessible to all qualified students, and our tuition is intentionally set below the actual cost of educating each young woman. Donations to MSM fuel the next generation
MANY MOUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY ALUMS ARE OF THE OPINION THEY WERE “BORN TO ATTEND MOUNT.” FEW CAN TRANSLATE THAT FEELING AS LITERALLY AS LITTLE ROCK BUSINESSWOMAN DONNA CHACHERE ’83.
“I’m adopted; I was actually born in a Mercy hospital,” Donna said. “I’m mixed-race and back in 1964, there were not a lot of mixed-race children. My maternal grandmother was Mexican and a devout Catholic who went to Mass every day, so the sisters knew her. They actually, and this is probably breaking all sorts of laws, kept me in the hospital nursery for almost four months until they found someone to adopt me they approved of. My first moms were the Sisters of Mercy.”
Attendance at the Mount was a given, and the experience provided Donna with all the tools she would need to excel in the male-dominated field of information technology.
“What I really loved about the Mount was all of our leaders were, of course, all girls,” she said. “You got used to being held to a very high standard and being a leader and competing to be the best. That has been invaluable in my career.
“To this day, programmers and database administrators are still mostly men. Regularly being the only woman in the room, and definitely most of the time the only person of color in the room, I had to deal with a lot of things that the Mount environment prepared me for, even if I didn’t know it at the time.”
As her career roots deepened, Donna found ways to give back to the school through time, talent and treasure. She volunteered with the Booster Club when her own girls were athletes at Mount, and she played a major role in conceiving the “Must be a Mount Girl” tagline and developing it into a popular branding hook. Currently, she serves as the chair on the school’s board of directors.
Most recently, she established a scholarship endowment to ensure future Mount girls experience a Mercy education.
“I received tuition assistance when I went here and it means a lot to me to help someone else,” she said.
Mary Catherine Burney, director of advancement, said establishing an endowed scholarship is just one of the ways to financially assist the school and its students. She said one of the most accessible vehicles is contributing to the Annual Fund, which can be done at any time and in any amount.
“The Annual Fund is our top fundraising priority because it truly affects every student in the school,” she said. “It affects academics, it affects athletics, it affects campus ministry. It affects the support of the school overall. When people give money to our Annual Fund, it lets us meet our top fundraising needs as well as things that are unexpected.”
Mary Catherine said for anyone who wishes to contribute but is unsure how to do it, a simple phone call will start the process. She also encouraged people to attend MSM events that support the school, such as the Dinner Belles, which will be called “One Belle of a Birthday” in 2026 to celebrate Mount’s 175th birthday.
Donna said in whatever form, financially supporting Mount St. Mary at any level of giving is all worthwhile and vital to the Mount’s future.
“To me, giving goes to the power of Mercy. That’s at the core,” she said. “Mercy is having everybody believing in everyone as they are and helping them to always improve. This is one essential way to carry that forward.”

The endowments at Mount St. Mary Academy address key areas of need for the school –scholarships, faculty compensation, facilities, technology, leadership development, and general needs – and occupy an important place in its current and future financial security. These endowments provide dependable revenue from year to year.
Donors may contribute to any of the existing endowments or scholarship funds below, or they may create a new one. New endowments can be established as a living tribute or in memory of a loved one with a minimum gift of $25,000. This may be paid at the time the fund is established or over a multi-year period of up to five years.

Mount St. Mary Academy’s biennial spring luncheon, Mercy & Me, took place Thursday, April 3, at the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock. More than 400 guests filled the Wally Allen Ballroom to hear bestselling author, popular podcast host and parenting expert Sissy Goff.
The event also featured the presentation of the 2025 Women’s Leadership Award to Sarah Beadle ’11, senior project manager at GE Vernova in Boston.

MSM “FAMILY REUNION” SET TO MARK 175 YEARS IN 2026
IT IS DIFFICULT TO WRAP ONE’S MIND AROUND WHAT THE WORLD LOOKED LIKE WHEN MOUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1851. THE FIRST ICE CREAM FACTORY WAS ESTABLISHED, THE FIRST SINGER SEWING MACHINE WAS PATENTED AND THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPH OF A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE ALL APPEARED THAT YEAR, AS DID THE FIRST EDITION OF THE NEW YORK TIMES .
Domestic issues involved relations with Native American tribes, the continued settlement of the American West and the ongoing debate raging over slavery that would lead the country into civil war a decade later.
Meanwhile, a small group of Sisters of Mercy arrived to little fanfare in Little Rock after traveling from Ireland at the bequest of Arkansas’ first Catholic Bishop, Andrew Byrne. They set up shop in a small house at Seventh and Louisiana streets downtown, teaching an enrollment of 35 students, initially both boys and girls.
Since that time, the world has fundamentally changed many times over, but the founding principles of the school – collectively known as the Mercy Values – have remained resolute. Despite changing social mores, advancing technology and new emerging opportunities for its graduates beyond anything the founders could have dreamed, the values still stand as the common thread binding the generations together.
Dena Wortsmith Daniel ’91 knows a little something about this houndstooth legacy with four generations of women in her family attending the school, the first in line graduating in 1937.
“There was never a choice of where
I was going to high school,” she said. “Between grandmothers and great aunts and aunts, my mom and my sister, and then cousins and nieces, I mean, we are Mount St. Mary through and through.
“I think that is what makes the Mount what it is. I was just up there a few days ago, and as you walk through the halls, you see parts of it that are exactly the same through generations. I can walk a hallway that my mother walked, and there’s just something about that that just circles into a giant hug. That’s the feeling that the Mount gives you; it’s warm, it’s special, it’s unique. Not many schools can claim that feeling.”
Dena’s feelings and MSM lineage is shared by many alumnae, including fellow 1991 graduate Christina Rossi Clark, who not only grew up surrounded by Mount traditions and lore – her mother, two sisters and other women on both sides of her family were Mount girls – but passed it on to the next generation. Christina watched her daughter, Mary Porter Clark, cross the graduation stage in May 2025.
“I was so thrilled to share that moment with her,” Christina said. “At the time I was wishing that I had other daughters who could go to school here, but now I’m glad that that’s our special thing.”
Given the two classmates’ connection
and obvious love for the school, it is fitting that they are serving as co-chairs for a very special birthday observance, marking the school’s 175th year in operation. Even the duo’s decision to take on the responsibility was rooted in their Mount heritage.
“Well, it was one of those things that when the Mount asks you to do something, you think about it and you’re like, OK, how do I give back and do it in a way that my mom would be proud of?” Dena said of her decision to co-lead the event committee. “I don’t know if there is anybody that loved Mount St. Mary more than my mom, Sherry Wortsmith, did. She was one of the women who started Dinner Belles. She died in 2021, so when the Mount called and said, ‘Hey, would you be willing to do this?’ well, if you can make your mama proud, you step in and try to make your mama proud.”
“I was so thrilled that the school asked me
to be a part of the birthday celebration,” Christina said. “As a parent, you’re coming for the mother-daughter Rosaries, the father-daughter Masses, the parents’ Power of Prayer group. We’ve had all of these opportunities to be up there and involved, and that kind of comes to a stop when you no longer have a student there. I felt cut off all of a sudden, and I’m glad I now have a reason to go up there still. I feel honored to do it. It’s also humbling.”
The name – One Belle of a Birthday – says it all about this once-in-a-lifetime family reunion. Slated for March 14, 2026, the event will serve as this year’s Dinner Belles celebration, with all proceeds supporting the school’s Annual Fund. The party will be held on the grounds and in the McAuley Center gym offering live music, heavy
hors d’oeuvres and plenty of live and silent auction items on hand including a bourbon pull.
A signature moment of the event will be a special champagne toast in honor of the school’s longevity, shared with generations of women whose lives were shaped by the treasured school.
“We went through a lot of different ideas and debated on how big to make this,” Dena said. “In the long run, I think it’s focusing really on two things. Obviously we want to highlight Founder’s Day with the Founder’s Day Mass, and then we wanted to have a giant party because 175 years is a huge thing to celebrate. We wanted to create something that’s a fun experience the minute you step on the grounds of the Mount to celebrate something really special.”
