HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASS ONLINE: Select and register for your class at www.mounts.org/events.

BY PHONE: Call 561-233-1775 and register by phone with your credit card.

IN PERSON: Stop by the Mounts Botanical Office, Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm.

CLASS, WORKSHOP, AND LECTURE POLICIES All classes, workshops, and some special programs require pre-registration.

Please plan ahead as walk-ins are not accepted.

Fees cannot be transferred or prorated. Refunds (less a 20% service fee) will be made for cancellations received seven days prior to classes and workshops.

No refunds will be given for missed classes. Classes are not interchangeable.

Classes may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not reached. The Garden reserves the right to cancel a program for any reason. If the program is canceled by the Garden, the total tuition will be refunded.

For some programs, a waiver form may be presented to you for signing at the start of class.

CONNOISSEURS GARDEN TOUR: A Mother’s Day Weekend Garden Event Saturday, May 11th, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Enjoy your self-guided tour of seven private gardens from Palm Beach to Delray Beach!

Sunday, May 12th, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Enjoy the beauty of Mounts Botanical Garden on Mother’s Day! We’ll offer free admission to all those with a CGT ticket.

Cost: Members: $25.00; non-members: $35.00 PROPAGATION: INCREASING YOUR NUMBERS Wednesday, May 22nd, 5:30 – 7:00 pm Cost: Members: $40; non-members: $50 Location: Chickee Hut & Nursery Guild Propagation Building Presented by Joel Crippen, Display Gardens Horticulturist Explore in depth the process of creating new plants from a variety of sources. Joel provides a more detailed and comprehensive review on a range of techniques on the topic of propagation: how to make and root soft and hardwood tissues with or without a misting system; dividing clumping plants; and collecting, preparing, and sowing seeds. You’ll engage in handson activities with a few “tricks of the trade” and environmental conditions for success. This is an active participation course for both novices and cloning enthusiasts. Bring garden clippers or paper scissors. If desired, bring in cuttings of particular plants you would like to root.

JUNE FARM YOUR BACKYARD Saturday, June 15th, 8:00 am - 2:00 pm Cost: Members: $10; non-members: $15 Location: Exhibit Hall Presented by Art Kirstein, Coordinator of Agricultural Economic Development The saying goes, “luck favors the prepared” and for farmers this could not be truer, which is why we need to prepare for the growing season now!

Growing your own food is incredibly rewarding, but for all levels of growers the planning stages can often be overwhelming. In this hands-on workshop, Art Kirstein, Coordinator of Agricultural Economic Development will teach you how to successfully grow your own vegetables, with a focus on establishing and managing small vegetable projects. Tips on site preparation, seedling establishment, planting, maintenance and harvesting will be covered. Register early! This workshop has sold out quickly in the past.

MAKER FAIRE: A FAMILY-FRIENDLY EVENT! Saturday, June 22nd, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Cost: Members: free; non-members: $10; children (ages 5-12): $5.

Calling all makers! Join us for our second Maker Faire, where young learners bring their creativity and their families to the garden to put S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) lessons into action!

STORIES IN THE GARDEN: An Outdoor Eco-Literacy Experience Tuesday, June 25th 10:00 – 11:00 am Cost: Members: free; non-members: $10; children (ages 5-12): $5.

Includes Garden admission. Pre-registration required.

Location: Pavilion Stories in the Garden engages young children and families in early literacy and the great outdoors!

Bring your young learners (ages 2-6) to this nature-themed program; they’ll love the interactive stories, songs and tours of various gardens. Programs are held, rain or shine, in our sheltered Pavilion.

Online registration is required, as availability is limited to the first 30 registered.

JULY ORCHID TRILOGY Saturday July 13th, 20th and 27th Cost for All 3 Classes: Members: $95.00; non-members: $105.00 Cost for Individual Classes: Members: $40.00; non-members: $45.00 Presented by Sandi Jones, Broward Orchid Supply ORCHID BASICS Saturday, July 13th, 10:00 am-1:00 pm Location: Mounts Auditorium Newcomers to orchids will learn how to choose the correct plants for their growing area and what orchids need (i.e., water, light, fertilizer and temperature) to grow and flower beautifully. Start your journey into the exciting hobby of orchid growing!

ORCHID REPOTTING & MOUNTING ORCHIDS Saturday, July 20th, 10:00 am-1:00 pm Location: Mounts Auditorium Learn how often an orchid should be repotted, the different potting medias to use, the proper type of pot or basket to use, and how to mount orchids on items such as a tree fern or cork. Demonstrations will be given.

TRAINING YOUR EYE – NOW WHAT? Saturday, July 27th, 10:00 am-1:00 pm Location: Mounts Auditorium Learn about pests and diseases that harm orchids, from bacterial and fungal rots to insects such as thrips, scale, snails and spider mites. Students will learn how to identify the culprits, what products to use to get rid of them, and how to avoid them in the future. This is information you need to know to grow the best orchids possible! Orchid or orchid leaves may be brought in for diagnosis, but must be placed in plastic bags to prevent contaminating other plants.  

AUGUST MAKE YOUR OWN FAIRY GARDEN Saturday, August 10th, 10:00 – 11:30 am Cost: Members: free; non-members: $10; children (ages 5-12): $5.

Location: Pavilion Presented by Nancy Byrne, Master Gardener The whimsical and sustainable way to use a “perfectly broken pot” to bring a miniature garden to life! The class begins with a guided, inspirational tour to discover a fairy garden here at Mounts Botanical. Once you have your creative juices flowing, we’ll continue by selecting a plant, learning how to take care of it, and exploring different design ideas to assist in choosing items from our Creation Table. Soil, two plants, repurposed pots, and fairy garden accessories are provided!

ORCHIDS AROUND THE WORLD Tuesday, August 20th, 10:00 – 11:30 am Cost: Members: $10; non-members: $15 Location: Exhibit Hall Presented by Bill Thoms, Renowned Orchid Grower, Orchid Hunter and International Speaker We are thrilled to offer orchid lovers the opportunity to be regaled by orchid expert extraordinaire, Bill Thoms. Join him for a visual tour documenting several travelogues of orchids growing in the wild in various places around the world. This presentation explores the culture of orchids and brings to light Bill’s orchid adventures in Ecuador, Brazil, Borneo and the Philippines! It will be presented with a bit of humor, to help growers understand how the plants work.

Beginning growers will get with lots of advice on fixing problems and more advanced growers will benefit from the wealth of information for them, too!

No matter how many orchids you have… 1000s, just a few, or none at all, Bill will give you tips to make them, or any plant, grow and bloom better. Many people say Bill Thoms is one of the best speakers they have ever heard.

Speaker Bio: Bill Thoms grew up in Pompano Beach and got his first orchid in 1969 when he rescued plants of Encyclia tampensis in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

He and Doris Dukes live near Brandon, and they are most proud of the awards for culture they have received over the years including 105 AOS Awards for Culture in 30 genera, First Class Certificates for Bulbophyllums, Cattleyas, Paphiopedilums and Prosthecheas, and over 400 total awards in all categories. Additionally, the American Orchid Society has added a new Annual Award for the best Bulbophyllum exhibited, the Bill Thoms Award.

His funny and informative book, Bulbophyllums; the Incomplete Guide, From A to WHY?, may be purchased from him. It also comes as a CD for use on a computer. He also has an ongoing video book that lasts for 2 years and has photos, articles, essays and answers to your personal orchid problems.

Presented by Rochelle Wolberg, Mounts Botanical Garden Curator-Director The best way to become acquainted with Mounts Botanical is to take a behind-the-scenes walking tour with its Curator-Director. On this evening stroll, Rochelle Wolberg will share fascinating facts about the Garden’s history and fill you in on plans for its future. Along the way, she’ll stop to discuss rare and unusual specimens, highlighting the plants that grow well in South Florida gardens.

EXOTIC PLANTS & ORCHIDS SALE Saturday, September 21st, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Sunday, September 22nd, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm Cost: Members: Free; non-members: $10 Our Exotic Plants & Orchids Sale is made for the shade! Stroll through the Garden and enjoy an amazing selection of orchids and exotic plants from more than 25 vendors. The area’s premier plant vendors will be selling begonias, bromeliads, orchids, ferns, hoyas, aroids, and more. Magnificent tabletop arrangements will be offered in a silent auction to benefit MBG’s horticulture scholarship program with Palm Beach State College.

ANNUAL MEETING & VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION Wednesday, September 25th, 5:30-7:00 pm Location: Exhibit Hall Open to all members of Mounts Botanical Garden Join Curator-Director Rochelle Wolberg and members of the Friends of the Mounts Botanical Garden for the annual membership meeting. New members of the board will be introduced, volunteers of the year are recognized, and Rochelle will present the State of the Garden as well as exciting developments! Cocktails and snacks are provided.

FABULOUS CROTONS OF FLORIDA Saturday September 28th, 10:00 – 11:00 am Cost: Members: $45; non-members: $55 Location: Mounts Auditorium Presented by Mark Peters, Peters Crotons & Cordylines Come learn about the fascinating global migration of Codiaeum (scientific name for the Croton) to the Western Hemisphere and our South Florida gardens! This class will cover care and culture of the plants as well as suggestions for its use in the landscape. We will conclude with a demonstration of air layering which is a simple and useful propagation technique for any woody shrub.
