BRET BAIER Doctor of Letters Bret Baier is the anchor of “Special Report with Bret Baier” at 6 p.m. EST on Fox News Channel. Special Report has been the #1 political news show on cable for more than 10 years.

Mr. Baier took over Special Report from Brit Hume in January, 2009. Mr. Baier formerly served as chief White House correspondent, reporting on presidential activities on a national and international level. Prior to that, as national security correspondent, he reported from the Pentagon from 2001-2006. He joined Fox News Channel in 1998 as the first reporter based in the Atlanta bureau, covering stories ranging from the 1999 conflict in Kosovo to the Timothy McVeigh execution to the Elian Gonzalez story.

He also provided a series of reports from Cuba.

Throughout his news career, Mr. Baier has been where the action is. He reported on the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the United States, and then provided up-to-the minute coverage of the war in Iraq – traveling to Iraq on 13 separate occasions. He’s also reported from Afghanistan 11 times since 2001 – including a two-week stint embedded with U.S. Special Forces. He had an exclusive interview with General Petraeus live from Iraq in September 2008.

In 2009, Mr. Baier hosted specials on the first year of the Obama presidency. He also secured the only interview with President Obama in the week leading up to the historic healthcare vote in the House of Representatives in March, 2010. Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan called it, “the most revealing and important broadcast interview of Barack Obama ever.” Most recently, Mr. Baier has anchored lengthy news reports on the death of Osama bin Laden.

Mr. Baier has secured numerous exclusive interviews with U.S. government officials. He has also interviewed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; Polish President Lech Kaczynski; and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, among others.

A graduate of DePauw University, Mr. Baier has a bachelor’s degree in political science and English. He and his wife, Amy, have two sons, Paul and Daniel.

BARBARA TAYLOR BRADFORD, OBE Doctor of Letters Barbara Taylor Bradford, OBE (Order of the British Empire) is one of the world’s best loved storytellers. Her 1979 debut novel, A Woman of Substance, ranks as one of the top-ten bestselling books of all time, with more than 31 million copies in print.

All 26 of her novels to date have been major worldwide bestsellers. Her 27th book, Letter From A Stranger, will be published later this year by St. Martin’s Press.

Mrs. Bradford was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom as the only child of Freda and Winston Taylor. She grew up in the Leeds suburb of Armley, and after Town Street Church of England School, worked in the typing pool at the Yorkshire Evening Post before going into journalism.

By the age of 20, she was the fashion editor of Woman’s Own magazine and an editor and columnist on Fleet Street for the London Evening News.

Mrs. Bradford’s books have sold more than 83 million copies worldwide in more than 90 countries and 40 languages. Ten of her books have been made into miniseries and television movies, making her one of the best-selling authors of women’s fiction over the last 30 years.

In April of 2003, Mrs. Bradford was inducted into the Writers Hall of Fame of America alongside Mark Twain, Langston Hughes and Dr. Seuss. She was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in the Queen’s 2007 Birthday Honours list for her contributions to literature. Her original manuscripts are archived at the Brotherton Library at Leeds University, alongside the works of the Brontë sisters.

In 2009, Barbara’s publishers began a worldwide 30th anniversary celebration of A Woman of Substance. The first annual Woman of Substance Awards took place on September 10, 2009 at the Dorchester Hotel in London.

She lives in New York City with her husband of 43 years, television producer Robert Bradford.

CAPTAIN SCOTT M. SMILEY Doctor of Humane Letters Scott Smiley, a native of Pasco, Washington, was commissioned in the United States Army in May 2003 through the United States Military Academy, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in engineering management. He also graduated from combat diver qualification course, airborne school, the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, and from Army Ranger School in March of 2004.

His first assignment was with the 1-24 Infantry Battalion First Brigade, 25th Inf Division at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he was a platoon leader.

He deployed to Mosul, Iraq in 2004 and was very seriously injured in 2005.

Upon his return to the U.S., Smiley was assigned to the Medical Hold Company at Fort Lewis.

He changed station in April of 2006 to Fort Monroe, Virginia, where he worked with the Accession’s Command.

In August of 2007, he enrolled at Duke University, and he graduated in 2009 with a master’s degree in business administration. He was then assigned to the United States Military Academy in the Behavioral Science and Leadership Department, where he taught military leadership.

Last year, Captain Smiley took command of the Warrior Transition Unit at West Point, New York. The Army’s first blind active duty officer, he is responsible for a company of 170 warriors in transition. His book, titled "Hope Unseen," describes his own difficult transition, and attributes his strength during his recovery to prayers, faith and the encouragement of others.

Captain Smiley’s awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.

He also received recognition as the 2007 Army Times Soldier of the Year, 2008 ESPN Best Outdoor Athlete, 2009 General Douglas McArthur Leadership Award recipient, and the 2010 Father of the Year. Captain Smiley is happily married to his beautiful wife Tiffany and has been blessed with two sons, Grady (4), and Graham (1).

In honor of his courageous and empathetic service, on the battlefield and among servicemen at home, Mount Saint Mary College proudly confers the honorary degree of doctor of humane letters upon Captain Scott Smiley.

JAMES W. TAYLOR, JR. Doctor of Laws James W. Taylor, Jr. is founder, president and chief executive officer of Taylor Biomass Energy LLC, and chairman of Taylor Recycling Facility LLC. He is known as an industry visionary with the practical contracting experience to manage projects of any complexity.

His motto has been “we need to stop wasting our waste; it has value and is a resource.”

Mr. Taylor founded Taylor Biomass Energy in 2005 as part of his family businesses’ commitment to waste reduction, recycling and reuse.

He built the first of these family businesses, Taylor Tree, Inc., into one of the New York Hudson Valley’s largest land clearing and tree service companies, and then led the firm’s transformation into Taylor Recycling, a leading recycler of construction and demolition debris. Jim has since passed along that business to his children James W. Taylor III, Hans E. Taylor and Tonya Taylor.

Taylor Recycling Facility LLC reputation grew even more as contractor for debris sorting/ separating and recovery efforts after the World Trade Center disaster in 2001. Taylor Recycling received a commendation from the Army Corps of Engineers’ lead contractor for their “tremendous contribution.” The U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration also recognized the firm for their unprecedented efforts.

From 2007-2009, he was president of the Construction Materials Recycling Association.

Currently Mr. Taylor is leading the Taylor team in designing, building and operating the world’s first commercial-size biomass gasification plant using municipal solid waste as the feedstock.

Taylor Biomass Energy LLC owns the patented technology. The green energy project right here in Orange County will employ approximately 400 construction workers, and then around 80 full time employees in Montgomery.

Mr. Taylor graduated from Montgomery’s Valley Central High School. He was a United States Army Artillery Surveyor from 1967-1970 and was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant E-6.

He resides in the Town of Newburgh, New York with his wife Eileen and daughter Kayla.

In honor of his resourceful business enterprises, and his green energy leadership, Mount Saint Mary College proudly confers the honorary degree of doctor of laws upon James W. Taylor, Jr.

Academic Regalia CEREMONIAL MACE

The Mount Saint Mary College ceremonial mace is a symbol of teaching authority. Representing the torch of truth, the Mount's mace incorporates the college motto, "Doce me veritatem" - Teach Me the Truth - and integrates the cross within its flame. At the top of the staff, the front panel displays the college seal, with its symbols of learning and service; the back panel displays the Dominican Sisters seal.

ACADEMIC DRESS

Academic dress is a sign of academic achievement worn at commencement exercises and other academic ceremonies. The tradition of academic dress dates from the 12th and 13th centuries, when academic gowns were common attire in early European universities. With the issuing of a code of dress, the Intercollegiate Commission standardized American academic attire in 1895.

Since the universities were founded by the church, students were required to wear the gowns at all times. The gowns represent an adaptation of the cape or mantle worn by church dignitaries in religious processions. The usual color of academic gowns is black but over the years variations in color and style have developed.

The gown's cut indicates the level of degree held. The bachelor's gown has long, pointed sleeves.

The master's gown has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist; the rear part of the sleeve is a square cut and the front part has an arc cut away. The doctoral gown is made with bell-shaped sleeves and is usually black, although the color is sometimes the color of the college conferring the degree. It is trimmed in velvet and has three, two-inch bars on the sleeves and a five-inch border, extending from the back of the neck down the two sides in front.

The hoods that accompany the gowns had a practical origin. Monks living in the Middle Ages wore hoods to protect their tonsured heads in winter and they collected alms in them. Hoods are the most significant part of academic dress. The hood's shape and size indicates the degree earned by the wearer. The color of the velvet border indicates the academic field and the color or colors of the lining represent the institution granting the degree.

The master's hood is shorter than the doctoral hood and lacks the panels of the doctoral hood.

Hoods are lined in silk with the colors of the school granting the degree, while the color of the binding or edging of the hood indicates the subject in which the degree was attained.

The square caps or mortarboards, usually black, are a prescribed part of academic dress. Tassels are attached to the center of the mortarboards. The tassels are worn over the left front quarter by degree holders; candidates wear tassels over the right front quarter until the degree is conferred.

PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN OF OFFICE & MEDALLION

The Presidential Medallion is made of sterling silver and bronze and bears the Mount Saint Mary College seal with its symbols of learning and service, and the words "Doce Me Veritatum" - Teach Me the Truth. The medallion also bears a fleur-de-lis, a symbol associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary, from the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh seal. The silver chain bears four ovals, each inscribed with the name and years of service of the college's four previous presidents.

The medallion was designed for Fr. Kevin E. Mackin's inauguration.

CEREMONIAL BANNERS

The Mount Saint Mary College banners add color and pageantry to its academic ceremonies.

At the college's commencement ceremony, select student representatives carry the banners in the academic procession. The banners are imprinted either with the college seal or a Dominican shield. One of the banners with the Dominican shield proclaims the purpose of the Dominican Order of Preachers: "Laudare, Benedicere, Praedicare" - To Praise God, To Bless God, To Preach God. The other Dominican shield banner reads, "Veritas" - Truth.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE

he history of Mount Saint Mary College can be traced to 1883. At the request of the pastor of St. Mary's Church in Newburgh, a small group of Dominican Sisters from the Second Street Convent in Manhattan opened a school on the McAlpine Estate, off Gidney Avenue. In 1913 the sisters bought the Selah R. Van Duzer estate including a mansion, which would become the Villa Madonna, and its carriage house, which would become Whittaker Hall.

In 1927 the sisters built a high school, Mount Saint Mary Academy, which closed in 1979. They also restored a storehouse as an elementary school and called it Casa San Jose. In 1950 they built a new elementary school and named it for their benefactor, Bishop John Joseph Dunn. Bishop Dunn Memorial School continues to educate students from all over the mid-Hudson region and provides field work for Mount Saint Mary College students in education and other disciplines.

The sisters opened the Mount Saint Mary Normal and Training School in 1930. Four years later the Commissioner of Education approved the program and the Mount received the authority to issue teacher's certificates. In 1954 the Normal School became a liberal arts college, able to grant an associate's degree in education.

Mount a provisional charter to grant the degree of Associate in Arts upon the completion of the registered three-year curriculum.

The Board of Regents voted to amend the college's charter October 30, 1959, and the Mount became a four-year liberal arts college. The Mount opened its doors to the first class of lay women in 1960 under the leadership of Mother Leo Vincent, O.P., also known as Sister Whittaker Hall Kathleen Short, the first president of the four-year college. In June 1962, the Mount granted its first bachelor's degree.

Aquinas Hall, the main academic facility, opened in 1963. Guzman Hall, now a residence hall, also opened that year as a novitiate for the young Dominican novices. The Mount graduated its first class, 32 students, in 1964. Sister Mary Francis McDonald, O.P. became the college's second president that year.

In May 1968 the college received full accreditation from the Middle States Association and in the spring of that year the first male student began taking classes at the Mount. Sister Mary Francis served until 1972, with assistance from Provosts Roland M. Whittaker, Ph.D., and Sister Marie Genevieve Love, O.P., Ph.D. William O'Hara, J.D., became the college's third president that year and served until 1976. The board of trustees appointed Sister Ann Sakac, O.P., Ph.D., as acting president that year and as the college's fourth president in 1977.

The college introduced its first master's degree program, a Master of Science in Special Education, in 1984. The college added a Master of Business Administration program in 1991 and a Master of Science in Nursing program in 1994.

Alice Curtis Desmond bequeathed her Balmville estate to the Mount in 1991. The Desmond Campus, two miles from the main campus, is home to the Center for Community and Educational Services. The William and Elaine Kaplan Recreation Center opened in 1992. Hudson Hall, the former Jewish Community Center, was dedicated in 1999.

Sakac Hall, named in honor of Sr. Ann Sakac, opened its doors to freshman women in 2003.

Guzman Hall was renovated a second time and re-opened in the fall of 2004. The renovations included the chapel, named Founder's Chapel in honor of the Dominican Sisters who founded the college. The college began to renovate College Courts, originally apartments built after World War II. The first of the renovated courts opened in 2005.

The Mount opened the Kaplan Family Mathematics, Science, & Technology Center in 2007 to respond to the nation's critical need for nurses and qualified mathematics and science teachers.

The college offers 19 majors and more than 50 academic programs.

Sister Ann retired June 30, 2008 with enrollment at 2,600. Fr. Kevin E. Mackin, O.F.M., S.T.D., became the Mount's fifth president July 1, 2008.
