MAJOR OR CORE:

The primary focus area of a program with a set number of required courses.

GENERAL EDUCATION:

Courses designed to help complement your chosen field of study and give you knowledge in a variety of areas. Based on four clusters:

Courses that count towards graduation but are not specified by your particular program. Choose what interests you from hundreds of options.

HONOURS:

Certain degrees offer an honours stream to introduce you to independent learning, research and academic challenges associated with professional and graduate studies. Enhance your problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills.

MINORS:

Students in degree programs can study topics outside of their major by including a minor. With over 55 minors to choose from, you can explore other interest areas that may help with future employment or graduate studies.

CONCENTRATIONS:

Some degree programs offer required or optional concentrations as part of your major. Concentrations include six to 10 courses designed to enhance your focus on a specific area of study.

WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES: Programs with required or optional work placements, including internships, work terms, co-ops and practicums, allow you to gain valuable industry experience.

A Mount Royal BA gives you the foundation to analyze past, present and future issues with an open and creative mind. These skills will open doors to a variety of professions as well as graduate or professional studies. Select a focus from six majors.

Explore many aspects of human experience by examining culture, social organization, and archaeological and skeletal remains. Be an innovative researcher and engage in fieldwork to investigate topics such as change, inequality, health, migration, human variation and evolution.

Understanding the past prepares you for the future. Studying history teaches you to communicate and research in ways that are valuable for a variety of careers. Policy Studies

Understand the need for effective, responsive policies in government, business and non-profit sectors and learn how to advise, critique, write and implement policy. BACHELOR OF ARTS — CRIMINAL JUSTICE (BA — CJ)

4-YEAR DEGREE

Study in Alberta’s only fouryear Bachelor of Arts — Criminal Justice program and expand your understanding of law enforcement, community outreach and victim services. Through theory and handson learning, such as court visits, build a strong foundation for the workplace or graduate studies. In the latter part of the degree, gain work experience in a justice-related agency with practicum opportunities or explore the honours stream.

BACHELOR OF INTERIOR DESIGN (BID)

4-YEAR DEGREE

Create interior environments that shape how we live, work, play and learn. Informed by theories of design, an understanding of building systems and the application of technology, you will develop critical design thinking skills. Through assignments, exercises and studio-based projects, apply and expand your design abilities. Gain industry experience with a required 450-hour paid internship.

Thanks to a unique practicum opportunity with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, a number of carefully selected criminal justice students have gained new perspectives into the field of death investigations. Holmgren oversees the partnership which began in 2017 and provides support throughout the experience. Ten students (and counting) have completed the highly soughtafter practicum, with three accepting paid positions upon graduation.

Required for some programs, spend a semester (450-hour minimum) gaining industry-related experience that will help connect theory to application and prepare you for employment upon graduation.

An internship is a valuable, employer-paid opportunity to put your academic learning into practice.

Teegan Neame

BACHELOR OF HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION — ECOTOURISM AND OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP (2023)

Part of Teegan Neame's graduation requirement as an ETOL student was the execution of a self-planned expedition longer than seven days. Deciding to take his trip to the next level, Neame spent over 70 days bike packing 7,000 kilometers along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and up through Alaska. Using footage he filmed along the way, he put together a digital recap and showcased his adventures at the 2022 ETOL Film Night.

In Alberta’s only midwifery degree program, students work with faculty and practising midwives to blend theory with practice while providing care to childbearing individuals and their families. General Science

Gain a comprehensive undergraduate education in science with exposure to a wide range of disciplines. Explore what interests you most, build a strong foundation in mathematics and computational sciences, and be equipped to meet the most in-demand skills. Specialize your degree by completing courses in two of the following concentrations:

BIOLOGY

Learn about the science of life by exploring one of three areas of biology: anatomy and physiology, cellular and molecular biology, or ecology and evolution.

CHEMISTRY

Get a mix of classroom and practical laboratory instruction with a focus on organic chemistry, biochemistry or the study of molecular structures.

Language Education for Educational Purposes (LEAP) offers four levels of high-quality English language instruction to help you develop the language skills needed for academic success. Your admission category is determined by the Admissions and Recruitment Office once they have received your application and required documents. Your category defines the courses and grades that will be used to calculate your competitive and final admission average. Applicants are required to disclose all previous high school and post-secondary attendance in their application.

Scholarships and bursaries

Mount Royal offers hundreds of awards, providing students with more than $3 million in scholarships and bursaries. Academic success, your financial situation and extracurricular participation are considered when determining your eligibility for various awards.

How to apply for scholarships and bursaries

To be eligible for scholarships and bursaries, apply for early admission from Oct. 1, 2023 to Feb. 1, 2024 at mru.ca/Apply Your MRU student ID number is required to apply for awards.

Living on campus

Living in Residence means less time spent commuting and more time enjoying student life. Plus, you have quick access to campus services, including the Library, Recreation and Wellness Services.

And forget about cramped dorm rooms — MRU offers one-, two- and four-bedroom townhouse and apartmentstyle units with plenty of space. Live-in staff also help foster a positive environment for living and learning.

+ New student Residence guarantee. Residence Services guarantees placement for all students enrolled in their first year at Mount Royal. To be eligible for this guarantee, you must apply and pay your security deposit by June 15, 2024.
