PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Alumni, It’s time for all of us to proclaim— Happy Centennial, Mount St. Joseph University!

What started as a small college in Cincinnati, opening its doors to a class of 20 scholarly women 100 years ago, has transformed into a regional leader in higher education.

Today, the Mount is dedicated to offering career opportunities for men and women in the fields of health care, business, science, liberal arts, communications, and many more. Our faculty continue to pioneer research in biology, cancer, psychology, education, and other disciplines. Furthermore, our alumni continue to demonstrate the power of an MSJ degree by serving as leaders of industry, educators, health care professionals, and researchers, in addition to other essential roles that impact our communities and our world.

Much of the Mount’s success is credited to graduates such as yourself.

We cannot succeed without your support, whether it’s through donations to the Annual Fund, serving as mentors and role models, or spreading the good word about our University to future students and donors. We are grateful for all that you do to ensure an MSJ education enables students to reach their personal, academic, and professional goals.

Case in point: our new state-of-theart Recreation and Fitness Center, set to be completed next year as part of our Transformation 2025 Strategic Plan, will benefit the entire student population by offering a one-stop destination for developing body, mind, and spirit. Piers are now in place to secure the building site and provide the foundation for the center. Construction is on track for completion in 2020. As one of the most comprehensive construction projects that the Mount has undertaken, this facility will feature indoor practice and training areas for MSJ NCAA Division III studentathletes, as well as a 200-meter indoor track and the latest workout and exercise

equipment. All students will enjoy the ample space for fitness classes and other activities. Significant financial support for this expansion is coming directly from our generous alumni. As such, the Recreation and Fitness Center will serve as a testament to the incredible support of Mount donors.

Of course, there is more to celebrate beyond our 100-year anniversary and our Transformation 2025 plans for the future.

For the first time ever, the Cincinnati Business Courier recently recognized the Mount as one of the city’s “Best Places to Work.” This proud distinction reflects the environment that we’ve built at the University. Indeed, a strong community of faculty and staff who approach their work with a sense of empowerment and commitment only leads to greater teaching and learning outcomes that facilitate student success.

Remember that as the Mount’s brand continues to strengthen and grow, so, too, does the value of your MSJ degree.

There has never been a more exciting time to be part of the Mount story.

September 14, 2019, was anything but typical. It was an epic afternoon and evening of friends, family, fun, and the first-ever fireworks display on the Mount’s campus.

The next edition of our historical retrospective examines the Mount’s impact in the 21st century. AROUND THE QUAD NEWS MSJ AWARDED “BEST PLACE TO WORK” DISTINCTION

CICADAS…YES, THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT Gene Kritsky, Ph.D., dean of the School of Behavioral & Natural Sciences at Mount St. Joseph University, who has studied cicadas throughout his academic career, worked in partnership with the Mount’s Center for IT Engagement to create the Cicada Safari App. The app allows users to search, photograph, and help map the 17-year Brood VIII cicadas that began emerging in northeastern Ohio—as well as in parts of western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia—in the early summer months.

People can use their phones to help Dr. Kritsky and his team build the MSJ 2019 Cicada Map.

“We developed this app because so many people are fascinated by cicadas,” he said. “This is true citizen science. The photographs submitted to our map are like voucher specimens permitting us to verify the observations while making the maps more useful for future research.”

A recognized cicada expert, Dr. Kritsky has given hundreds of media interviews, published academic papers on cicadas, and is the author of two books on Cicadas, Periodical Cicadas: The Plague and the Puzzle and In Your Backyard: Periodical Cicadas. Learn more at faculty.msj.edu/kritskg/cicada/.

For the first time ever, Mount St. Joseph University has been recognized with the Grand Company Winner designation by the Cincinnati Business Courier’s Best Places to Work program.

The Courier’s annual program honors organizations in the Greater Cincinnati region with the most engaged and satisfied employees, based on anonymous surveying conducted by Quantum Workplace. Survey participants answer questions about their workplace’s approach to senior leadership, team effectiveness, work recognition, and benefits.

MSJ employees joined more than 1,000 people from 68 companies at the finalists’ celebration and awards ceremony in October, when the Mount was honored as a winner in the 200+ Employees category.

In a congratulatory letter, President Williams thanked employees for their passion, hard work, and dedication.

MSJ & UC COLLEGE OF LAW LAUNCH 3+3 PROGRAM The Mount and the University of Cincinnati’s College of Law have partnered to create an accelerated dual degree option for students seeking to earn their undergraduate and juris doctor degrees in less time. Under the 3+3 accelerated dual degree program, MSJ students can start law school a year early and be positioned to earn a B.A. and J.D. in just six years, saving time and money.

3+3 program declare their interest during their first year of undergraduate education. During their junior year, students apply to the College of Law and become eligible for its scholarships.

If accepted, the student will begin full-time study at the College of Law during their fourth year, and the credits earned during that year will complete the student’s MSJ degree while counting toward the law degree.

“We are excited to enter this partnership arrangement with the

University of Cincinnati’s College of Law,” said President Williams. “It represents another opportunity for the Mount to support students educating themselves, holistically and as costeffectively as possible. This program will enhance the learning experiences for Mount students, placing them on a fasttrack to the legal profession. Moreover, legal education is a great platform for a multitude of other career options.”

AROUND THE QUAD NEWS SIX NEW LEADERS JOIN THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Mary Ellen Adcock, Harold D. Brown, David J. Fikse, Jonathan M. Hiltz, Mary E. Ivers ’71, and Corey Johnson are the newest members of the Mount’s Board of Trustees. They joined the board as the University prepared for its Centennial Celebration and implemented a new strategic vision, Transformation 2025.

Mary Ellen Adcock is senior vice president of retail operations at The Kroger Company and also serves on the Cincinnati Museum Center Board of Trustees.

Mary Ellen Adcock Harold D. Brown serves as vice president of community strategies at the Greater Cincinnati Foundation and also serves on the boards of AchievePoint Career Harold D. Brown Academies, Greenlight Cincinnati, and the St. Xavier High School Mission Promotion Committee.

David J. Fikse is president at Mercy Health – Cincinnati David J. Fikse and serves on several boards, including the Health Collaborative, DePaul Cristo Rey, REDI Cincinnati, and the Mercy Health Board of Trustees.

Jonathan M. Hiltz is a partner at the law firm Keating Muething & Klekamp PLL, practicing in the business transactions group.

Mary E. Ivers ’71 returns to the board Jonathan M. Hiltz after a year break, having previously served for eight years. She currently serves on the boards of the Junior League of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Woman’s Mary E. Ivers ’71 Club.

Corey Johnson is a supply chain associate director at Procter & Gamble.

The Board of Trustees is currently Corey Johnson comprised of 30 members representing several fields, including accounting, banking, education, finance, health care, law, and nonprofit communications.

Chairperson Timothy G. Aug (Fifth Third Bank), Vice Chairperson Kathryn K. McMullen (retired from Macy’s Corporate Services), and President Williams serve as the Board’s leadership team.

READING SCIENCE PROGRAM EARNS TOP MARKS The Mount’s Reading Science Program, one of the first in the nation to be accredited by the International Dyslexia Association, has earned the Accreditation Plus Level. This higher level of accreditation offers further assurances that graduates will have participated in practicum experiences that resulted in mastery of structured literacy.

The Mount’s Reading Science Program uses a scientifically based reading research model, with extensive course work in Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Instruction. Students learn

instructional approaches to teach reading, writing, and spelling using an explicit, sequential, structured language approach with multisensory methodology.

GET YOUR (CENTENNIAL) TARTAN ON!

The Mount St. Joseph University Centennial Tartan has been created to celebrate an important milestone in the Mount’s rich history and affirm the sense of family shared by members of our community. It will now join the University’s mission statement, seal, shield, and mountain lion mascot as another way for everybody to express MSJ’s unique identity and community.

The Mount’s Centennial Tartan includes the University colors, blue and gold, which represent the symbol for God on the Coat of Arms of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati (“Sun in glory on blue, symbol of God, ‘God is Charity’”).

Central to each sett is a cross, comprised of groups of three white lines, representing the Holy Trinity. The gold stripes honor the three Sisters of Charity, who each served as president during its first century: Sister Maria Corona, Sister Adele Clifford, and Sister Jean Patrice Harrington.

The Centennial Tartan is now available on a wide variety of Mount apparel and accessory items, including ties, scarves, sashes, mugs, tumblers, and canvas totes. STUDENTS EXPLORE MAINE HISTORY, MUSIC, AND THE LOBSTER INDUSTRY MSJ students joined faculty members for a trip to Pemaquid Harbor, Maine, last summer. Joining Gene Kritsky, Ph.D., dean of the School of Behavioral & Natural Sciences, Peter Robinson, Ph.D., professor of history, and Elizabeth Bookser Barkley, Ph.D., ’70 professor of English, were Jessee Smith ’99, Morgan Carpenter, Katie Drinkuth, Elycia Edwards, Sasha Feldmann, Erica Rawlings ’19, and Colleen Werbrich.

In the course, “Sea, Sail and Song: Early American Maritime History,”

students explored how life on various frontiers—between land and sea and between Native American and European cultures—created new ideas concerning individualism, independence, and, eventually, a new American character. As part of the class, each student performed 30 hours of community service at sites related to history or waterways.

The trip itinerary was full and varied: an archaeological tour of the Pemaquid State Historic Site; a ferry ride to and hiking on Monhegan Island; a visit with

a young lobster fisher aboard her boat; kayaking on the Pemaquid River; and tours of the Darling Marine Center and the Maine Maritime Museum. Among the musical highlights were three private sessions with Maine musicians, all internationally known folk composers and singers: Fred Gosbee and Julia Lane (Castlebay), Steve Romanoff (Schooner Fare), and Gordon Bok.

THE MOUNT HONORS NURSING PROFESSIONALS Mount St. Joseph University recognized nursing professionals Adam Hill, Melanie Kroger-Jarvis, Kathleen A. O’Connell ’69, Tina Volz, and Francie Wolgin with the Leadership in Nursing Awards in mid-October, at the Drees Pavilion in Devou Park, located in Covington, Ky. In its 24th year, the Leadership in Nursing Awards honor outstanding nurse leaders whose hard work and commitment have enhanced the image of nursing and advanced the professional development of nurses.

Employees at the Mount can now participate in a new monthly professional development series known as Operation Luke. The program, which is tied to the University’s mission statement and Transformation 2025 goals, is guided by Luke (12:48), “To whom much is given, much will be required.”

The series is designed to impact interested faculty and staff through an increased understanding of

effective leadership styles and proactive community engagement. With personal and professional development as the

central theme, workshop topics in the Operation Luke series include “Building Your Professional and Personal Network,” “Developing Strategies to Reduce Workplace Stress,” and “Sharpen your Public Speaking & Presentation Skills.”

Employees who attend more than five workshops will receive special recognition at the campus-wide celebration, “Bringing It All Together,” in May 2020.

Operation Luke is administered by the Mount’s Community Engagement and Professional Development Project Team.

In the spring 2018 semester, the class partnered with Healthy Moms & Babes, an outreach ministry dedicated to providing health services to mothers and infants in need through mobile units and home visits. THE PARTY OF THE CENTURY HISTORIC CAMPAIGN KICKOFF

The Centennial Kickoff Celebration was also the official public kickoff of the Mount’s Transformation 2025 Campaign—the largest in its history. President Williams proudly announced that generous alumni, friends, foundations, corporations, and donors have already contributed more than $10.2 million toward the campaign’s first goal, a new recreation and fitness center. He also shared that the new building is being named the Centennial Fieldhouse.

“The Centennial Fieldhouse will be the largest facility on campus and it is exactly what our student athletes need for year-round indoor practice,” said President Williams. “One of the most significant features of the Centennial Fieldhouse will be a fitness center for all students. When we surveyed students about what they wanted on campus, a dedicated space for exercise and fitness was at the top of the list.”

The good news didn’t end there.

He also announced that the new fitness center in the Centennial Fieldhouse will be named the Austin E. Knowlton Fitness Center. The Knowlton Foundation has been a loyal supporter of the Mount for more than a decade, working to provide much needed scholarships to students. Most recently, the Knowlton Foundation donated $1.5 million to the Transformation 2025 Campaign.

culture and beliefs; and service to others.

In addition, the four central elements of the Sisters of Charity’s mission statement were also highlighted: act justly; build loving relationships; share our resources with those in need; and care for all creation. A group of alumni from the Art and Design Department participated in the exhibition by creating missioninspired artworks. They included: Sharon Kesterson Bollen ’68, Pam Korte ’72, M. Katherine Hurley ’74, Lisa Sanger ’83, Joell Angel-Chumbley ’92, Doug Klocke ’98, Anne Schlomer ’94, and Adrian Vance Hawk ’07.

And so it began…the kickoff celebration for the Mount’s Centennial.

THE PARTY GETS STARTED

On the far side of the quad, the grassy area in front of the Science Building was transformed into the Kids Zone. An enormous bouncy house sent children and their giggles high into the air. On the Seton Center side of the quad, attendees stopped by a fun photo station, complete with props, while others strolled through the center of the quad,

trying their luck at the Big Six booth, raffle drawings, split-the-pot tickets, and cornhole.

In a booth decked out with a 54-inch TV, party-goers watched the Mount’s new Esports team compete in live video game competitions. At the Pavilion near the library, the sounds of Ladi T of Cinci Band drifted into the quad as people relaxed and enjoyed the late afternoon sunshine.

Another first for the Centennial Kickoff was the parade of food trucks parked in the administration building parking lot. Guests munched on tacos, grilled delicacies, pizza, and ice cream.

CELEBRATING WHAT WAS AND WHAT IS

Sarah Joseph (Granger) ’69 and husband Bob, who live in Chevy Chase, Md., were in Cincinnati to celebrate their friends’ 50th wedding anniversary. They decided to visit the Mount where they had been married more than 48 years ago. Arriving as the final preparations for the Centennial were underway, they were delighted to receive

a warm welcome, and quickly found themselves in the midst of the day’s excitement and energy. The couple enjoyed the special exhibit in the art gallery and also visited the Mater Dei Chapel.

“It was so easy to sense how the Mount has continued to wonderfully adapt to changing times while celebrating a century’s worth of education founded on the charism of the Sisters of Charity,” said Sarah (pictured above with her husband). “I was in awe, and left campus with a heart full of hope and optimism for the Mount’s future!”

CHEERS TO 100 YEARS

People in line at the north side of the quad were more than happy to wait their turn to purchase the one-of-a-kind, first-ever MSJ beer, appropriately named “Centenni-Ale.” The special beer was the tasty result of the clever minds and brewing talents of Tim Lawson, Ph.D., and Andy Rasmussen, Ph.D., who teach beer brewing classes at the Mount. Described

as a citrusy, light IPA, the Centenni-Ale beer was brewed at West Side Brewing, where co-owner Kurtis Remmel ’08 was more than excited to be a part of the celebration. Trevor Theuerling, a junior graphic design major at the Mount, designed the beer can.

Centenni-Ale exceeded pre-ordering expectations with more than 200 people attending the official tapping party at West Side Brewing on the eve of the Kickoff Party. The special brew was nearly a sell-out, with only 12 cases remaining of the original 1,500 ordered.

God of charity, in this centennial year we praise and thank you for the countless ways you have blessed Mount St. Joseph University. We stand on the shoulders of our founders, the Sisters of Charity, and of the faculty, staff, alumni, and benefactors who have gone before us.

Continue to transform our lives that we, too, may respond to the needs of our times, be open to the grace of the present moment, and dare to risk a caring response. May St. Joseph, our patron, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton intercede for us now and in the years to come.

A SOCIETY 100 YEARS IN THE MAKING

In 1920, the world was clawing back to normalcy after World War I. The Roaring Twenties birthed a time of economic prosperity, cultural edge, and artistic drive. The start of the decade marked a year of firsts: the first commercial radio station hit the airwaves, women gained the right to vote with the 19th Amendment, the League of Nations was established, and the Mount opened its doors to 20 students

as the first Catholic college for women in Southwestern Ohio.

Now, in honor of its centennial anniversary, the University has launched a new giving opportunity—the 1920 Society.

This group recognizes alumni and friends who have chosen to donate unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more each year to support the progress of the Mount. More importantly, it’s a way for

the University to say thank you to its most ardent supporters.

“As we begin our Centennial Celebration year, the Mount is in a great place under the leadership of Dr. H. James Williams and First Lady Mrs. Carole C. Williams,” says Timothy G. Aug, chairperson of the Mount’s Board of Trustees. “We are experiencing positive growth, not only in our student population, but also in our relationships

with alumni and community members. Any donation to the Mount, be it financial or in-kind support, helps the University prepare students to be active and purposeful members of society. Contributions to the 1920 Society help students in many ways, adds Kathryn K. McMullen, chair of the Advancement Committee and vice chairperson of the Board of Trustees. “From ensuring students have the most critical equipment for learning to helping out financially, donations to the 1920 Society impact all levels of student learning and professional development,” she says.

PAYING FORWARD THE MOUNT EXPERIENCE

“I don’t feel like I’m donating. I feel like I’m paying back what I owe the Mount because without the education, I would have never had the success that I do,” says Lynda Mullins ’64, a member of the 1920 Society.

Initially, Mullins couldn’t afford to attend college. Her next-door neighbor, who attended the Mount, advised her to talk with the Sisters of Charity to see if assistance could be given to help her earn a degree. After she was interviewed by the Sisters, they let her attend the school free-of-charge.

During her student years, Mullins worked in the registrar’s office, including the summer after earning her degree.

“When I got my first check after I graduated, I thought there was a big mistake with the amount of money that was given to me. It was a lot more than I was used to.”

After she approached her boss about the incorrect amount, she was told: “You received that amount because you have a college education now—you’re worth more.”

“What a lesson that was,” adds Mullins.

After receiving her degree in business education, she taught for six years at St. Henry High School in Erlanger, Ky., and for a year at Bowling Green State University as a graduate assistant while earning her master’s degree. For more than 30 years, Mullins then taught business education in Prince George’s County (Washington, D.C.) before retiring in 2003. She has donated to the Mount every year since she graduated.

“The Mount is a model of how to live your life,” says Mullins. “I feel very fortunate to have gone to a Catholic college and I use the faith instilled in me every day.”

For 1920 Society member Emmy Combs ’64, the Mount’s family tradition runs deep. Her mother, Amelia Koester Koch ’38, graduated from the Mount and her father, Charles R. Koch, a fierce defender of women’s education, taught at the University as a speech and debate coach. Her sisters Regina Adele KochO’Brien ’71 and Margaret Clair Koch ’67, cousin Mary Roberta Koch Schott ’69, and aunt “Mickie” Eileen Koch ’42 are also family members who attended the Mount.

A political science major, Combs was equally grateful for the strong liberal arts background she received from the Mount. “It greatly served me in my career and I think it’s essential to become

a well-rounded individual,” she adds.

Her experience influenced her decision to donate to the Mount for nearly four decades.

“I wanted to give back so others can have the same experiences I had,” says Combs. “The Mount gave me a lot and I wanted to repay that.”

Joan Sabin ’81 attended the Mount to complete her bachelor’s degree in nursing. Though her time at the school was short, the education and individual attention she received inspired her to become a regular Mount donor for the past 33 years.

“Attending the Mount was truly a community experience in that the faculty and the administrators were very invested in having students reach their full potential,” says Sabin. “The Mount has done a nice job continuing to grow with programs at different graduate levels and expanding the campus. It continues to be a better and better experience for students.”

GIVING FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS

Since opening its doors to 20 students in 1920, the Mount’s enrollment has grown to 2,168. By 2025, the university expects to have 2,500 students enrolled.

“Only very special institutions last for 100 years,” says McMullen. “It’s truly amazing to think about all the students who have been educated and have had special moments at the Mount. The 1920 Society was formed as a way to allow alumni and friends to support the Mount for its journey into the next 100 years.”

Since 1920, the Mount has embraced excellence in academic endeavors; the integration of life and learning; respect and concern for all persons; diversity of cultures and beliefs; and service to others. In 2000, under the leadership of MSJ President Sister Francis Marie Thrailkill, O.S.U., Ed.D., the Mount community explored how best to prepare students for the future.

The result was the Shaping Tomorrow initiative, a new mission statement, and guidelines on how to promote institutional excellence.

Focus was given to investing in campus technology; keeping a Mount education as affordable as possible; increasing the scholarship endowment to provide more merit- and need-based financial aid; increasing the general endowment to ensure faculty and staff development; maintaining and enhancing equipment and facilities; developing new academic, co-curricular, and service programming; completing renovations and major facility upgrades; and expanding the wireless network.

Whereas most new year (or, in this case, new century) resolutions become abandoned quickly, the Mount operated as it always has—with an attitude of success, not failure, no matter the odds.

According to the Institutional Advancement 2000-2001 Annual Report, in the fall of 2000 “the process of identifying, rating, and cultivating major gift prospects was reassessed, and a new program of major gift fundraising was defined,” as part of the Mount’s Shaping Tomorrow initiative. Gift commitments during the 2000-2001 academic year were strong, at $2.9 million (a 47 percent increase over the prior year), paving the way for change.

EXPANSIONS AND UPGRADES

In 2000, the Mount garnered quite a bit of press by becoming one of the nation’s first wireless campuses. Students were given IBM ThinkPad notebook computers, providing them with mobile and portable access to wireless technology (known as MERLIN) anywhere on campus. The Cincinnati

In 2000, the Mount also raised more than $600,000 to establish a science endowment, a goal that resulted in the Kresge Foundation making an additional gift of $150,000. In November 2001, the

endowment was named the Rieveschl Endowment for the Sciences in honor of George Rieveschl, Ph.D., and his wife, Ellen, and their gift of $250,000. Dr. Rieveschl, a chemist, developed the compound for Benadryl, the first antihistamine to go on the market in 1946.

Moving into 2001, the Mount began reaching more adults through its

Make the Climb campaign. The school unveiled its new Master of Science in Organizational Leadership Program, the only program of its kind in the region.

The Children’s Center, providing early childhood development experiences for children of Mount students, received national accreditation—a recognition achieved by less than 10 percent of early childhood programs in the U.S. Incoming freshmen began spending a day immersed in community service before the start of the semester. New housing opened in the East Wing of Seton Center and the new Fifth Third Dining Hall debuted. More than 1,000 black students from local high schools participated in project SCOPE (Summer Collegiate Orientation Program and Enrichment).

And fall 2001 enrollment grew to 2,273, including 1,332 full-time students (a 1.4 percent increase over the previous year).

The new century was looking good. But then, on September 11, 2001, a group of Mount students about to tour the White House saw smoke in the direction of the Pentagon. And everything changed.

2004

Sports Complex and Schuler Field opens

A year later, the Mount commemorated the 9/11 anniversary with a nine-day remembrance called “Reflect, Remember and Renew,” which included a prayer service, time for personal reflection, and appreciation for local fire and police departments. The Mount’s faculty also participated in a discussion panel called “9/11 A Year Later: Beyond the Stars and Stripes,” which provided a forum for “ideas on ethical dilemmas, the sacrifice of freedom for security, and the current military situation with Iraq,” according to a Mount press release.

The year 2002 was filled with celebrations as more than 100 alumnae nurses attended “Rekindle the Spirit of Nursing – 75 Years of Educating Ethical and Spiritual Caring” to honor the Mount’s Nursing Program. In August, MERLIN was the recipient of the 2002 EDUCAUSE Award for Excellence in Networking: Innovation in Network Technology, Services, and Management.

BUILDING EXCITEMENT

In March 2003, the Mount announced its largest campus expansion since 1962. The Building Excitement Campus Expansion Plan included the construction of a Welcome Center; renovation of the Residence Hall to add suites; construction of a game field, running track, athletic complex and practice fields; and construction of a multi-level parking garage.

“We are writing the 21st century story of the College of Mount St. Joseph with the advancements we have made in the curriculum, technology, and now in student facilities,” said MSJ President Thrailkill in the spring 2003 issue of The Mount Magazine.

The Mount’s co-op program celebrated 20 years in 2003, and the school partnered with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and TriHealth to offer Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programs onsite at local hospitals for registered nurses. In the spring, the Mater Dei Chapel’s three bronze bells, among the largest sets in the Cincinnati area (weighing a total of 3,493 pounds), were restored by Cincinnati’s Verdin Company.

But 2003 also brought heartache and headaches. On September 11, Professor John L. Aber, Ph.D., had a massive heart attack at age 52. He had taught writing, literature, and film history in the Communication Studies Program for 18 years. The virus MSBlaster plagued the MSJ network, and many students lost data (and subsequently learned the importance of backing up their files).

Reacting to a nationwide nursing shortage, the Mount launched an accelerated Master of Nursing degree in 2004 that could be completed in 15 months. At the time, there was a 17 percent vacancy rate and more than 1,100 open positions for nurses locally, according to the Greater Cincinnati Hospital Council.

Gene Kritsky, Ph.D., professor of biology and noted entomologist at the Mount, once again made waves in the press by monitoring the 17-year periodical cicada emergence, Brood X, from campus.

Also in 2004, the $2.6 million multilevel parking garage construction began, eventually offering 301 additional parking spaces. In July, the Cooperative Education program received the state’s top award from the Ohio Cooperative Education Association, and the Athletic Training Program was granted accreditation.

The Mount also announced a new major in Criminology/Sociology, a new dual major in Aging Services and Administration/Social Work, and a new Associate in Arts degree in Inclusive Early Childhood Education to help meet the needs of the new No Child Left Behind federal law. Continuing its partnerships with local hospitals, the Mount teamed up with St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Northern Kentucky to provide the RN to BSN degree to nurses onsite. Lastly, the master’s degree program in Religious Studies celebrated its 15-year anniversary.

In 2004, 317 freshmen enrolled at the Mount, an 18.7 percent increase over the previous year. In September, the Mount held grand opening celebrations of the new Sports Complex and Schueler Field with a Soccer Night and a Dedication Ceremony. The Lions, who finally had a home field, finished the 2004 regular season with an undefeated record of 10-0, claiming the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title.

With 40 undergraduate degree programs in 2005, including evening degrees and accelerated weekend programs, as well as master’s degree programs that included Religious Studies, Organizational Leadership, Nursing, and Education—and a doctorate in Physical Therapy—the Mount was a solid fit for many types of students. The college also offered a wide selection of athletics programs for women and men, including basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and more.

In September 2005, the Learning Center (which served 542 students through a total of 1,942 visits in 2004) moved to its new home in the newly renovated Seton Center. Lions On-Line (LOL) was also launched, introducing students’ literary works to the public.

And in October, the Mount formed a Young Democrats of America club, one of the first in Ohio.

In 2007, the Mount announced a new undergraduate degree program in Sport Management with a minor in Business Administration; an Interactive Media Design and Computing Program; new concentrations in church music, jazz, and studio music for music majors; a part-time evening BSN Program;

new concentrations in art and music for graduate students; and classes in glassmaking at Neusole Glassworks.

As a participant in the national Yellow Ribbon Program, the Mount began to offer veterans the ability to pursue their undergraduate or graduate degrees free-ofcharge. In September, the Mount launched a new campus-wide recycling program and hosted its first men’s lacrosse game on campus. In 2007, students also traveled to New Orleans to help in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

“We saw the devastation of miles and miles in the lower 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish, and FEMA trailers everywhere,” said Sister Monica Gundler ’83, SC, director of campus ministry, in The Mount Magazine. “It’s been over a year and still there is lots of work to be done.”

And finally, Sister Francis Marie Thrailkill, O.S.U., Ed.D., announced she would retire in June 2008, after serving as president for 20 years.

After an eight-month search for a president who could “lead the college with vision, inspire the community as an ethical leader as well as a Catholic, and embrace the mission of the Mount and the tradition of the Sisters of Charity,” Anthony Joseph Aretz, Ph.D., took on the role in July 2008.

The Mount’s co-op program celebrated 25 years in 2008. Partnering with local giants such as Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Milacron, Procter & Gamble, Eldermount, Messer Construction, Validex, and RHC Corporation, MSJ students were collectively earning about $1 million in wages, with an average of $10.51/hour, each year.

A move toward sustainability and green solutions continued to take over the Mount, with the dining hall embracing trayless dining, thereby

reducing the average waste per person by 30 percent and conserving 500 gallons of water per day. The Archbishop Alter Library’s roof received a makeover with 8,880 sedum plants promising yellow blooms over 4,440 square feet. The green roof was designed to reduce energy needs by up to 50 percent.

Dr. Aretz’s inauguration was held March 19, 2009—the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Charity.

More than 70 alumni from 1938 to 2008 participated in the events, including 91-year-old Agnes Devaney Fogarty ’38, who had witnessed all six Mount presidents in office.

In 2010, the Mount added men’s volleyball and two new high-tech simulation nursing labs and Mount TV, an online television network. In addition, the Environmental Action Committee was created and the Athletic Hall of Fame was established with three charter members: Kay Corcoran, former

women’s volleyball coach and athletic director; T. Jean Dowell, former women’s basketball coach and athletic director; and Pat Shibinski, former chair of the Physical Education Program and field hockey coach.

In 2011, Dr. Aretz announced a new Ethical Leadership Development Initiative, beginning in the fall with freshmen interdisciplinary studies courses and continuing in fall 2012 in ethics core courses. With its focus on environmental awareness, the Mount adopted a new printing and copying policy.

The Mount offered two new nursing programs in 2012: the Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice. The Mount also launched a website redesign to ensure a better mobile experience. Other improvements included a new outdoor pavilion in the Quad and an updated campus entry from Delhi Road, featuring landscaping,

By 2013, MSJ faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees had begun a visioning process focused on the Mount’s future.

In an issue of Mount News, Keith Weber, former chief information officer and co-chair of a task force said, “I found it interesting that one of the biggest or boldest ideas that came out of the discussions was the reaffirmation that the Mount’s underlying strength is the care and attention that we give each and every student. This has been the Mount’s hallmark since our founding by the Sisters of Charity in 1920 and needs to continue to be our strength for our second 100 years.”

After a 15-member faculty and administrative task force spent more than a year revising the Common Core standards, students in the fall of 2013 were given a new set of courses that fell under one of six learning outcomes and performance indicators— communication, critical thinking, ethics, social responsibility, cultural competence, and integrative learning.

Also new in 2013: the MountConnect Job Board allowing employers to post co-op jobs as well as full-time, parttime, and degree-required positions for students and alumni; $3.2 million in renovations to the Seton lobby and the Seton West residence hall; and a fully online RN-to-BSN Program allowing registered nurses to earn their bachelor’s degree.

A COLLEGE BECOMES A UNIVERSITY

Effective July 1, 2014, the College of Mount St. Joseph officially became Mount St. Joseph University. In the fall 2013 issue of Mount News, Dr. Aretz said: “The designation change to university acknowledges our existing graduate programs for master’s and doctorate degrees and enables us to expand our academic graduate offerings even further, as well as implement online programs.”

Despite this monumental change, many MSJ traditions still remain. Since

the early 2000s, incoming freshmen are invited to attend a Welcome Weekend boat ride, complete with food and dancing, aboard a double-decker paddleboat on the Ohio River. The Homecoming Pep Rally still includes a bonfire, pizza, and cornhole. And weeklong homecoming events continue to feature an SGA-sponsored decorating contest, RA-staff hosted bingo, and an SGA homecoming t-shirt sale, followed by a pep rally, tailgating, and Lions football game.

The Talent Opportunity Program was launched in 2014 as a career preparation initiative. The Lion’s Den, located in the former Scholar’s Center on the ground floor of the Seton Center, also opened.

It included a pool table, ping pong, foosball, air hockey, and video gaming areas, with new couches and seating, large flat-screen televisions, and a docking stand for gaming systems.

A LEGACY ADAPTS AND CONTINUES fanfare. In the summer 2017 issue of Mount News, he announced a new initiative, Transformation 2025, “which will serve as a roadmap for this great University.”

On July 1, 2017, Sister Jean Patrice Harrington ’53, SC, who had served as the Mount’s president from 1977 to 1987, passed away in Mother Margaret Hall.

In 2018, Lauren Hill was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. And in 2019, the Mount embarked on new renovations and its long-anticipated, yearlong centennial celebration.

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

The Division of Health Sciences began offering a Health and Wellness degree, and a new Saturday program allowed students to earn an MBA in just over two years. Adding to cost savings and flexibility, the Mount also began offering an option for eight undergraduate programs to be completed in three years instead of four.

Aretz resigned from the presidency in 2015 and was celebrated for his many accomplishments. Until a new president was announced, the Mount’s Board of Trustees named Provost Joel Thierstein, Ph.D. interim president while advertising a search for a new leader.

Also notable in 2015 was the story of Lauren Hill, who had a dream to play collegiate basketball. That dream became reality when women’s head basketball coach Dan Benjamin received special permission from the NCAA to move up the team’s season opener by two weeks.

Why? Hill, who had been diagnosed with DIPG, an aggressive brain tumor, didn’t have long to live. She scored the opening and closing points at the soldout game played in Xavier University’s 10,000-seat arena in November 2015.

She became a spokesperson for research efforts and raised nearly $2 million for The Cure Starts Now Foundation. Her

star never faded as Sports Illustrated featured her story, Glamour Magazine named her one of the country’s 50 most inspirational women, and Wheaties put her photo on its box. The 19-year-old also appeared on ESPN and ABC’s The View. She continues to inspire people everywhere, even after her passing on April 10, 2015.

A NEW PRESIDENT MOUNTS A TRANSFORMATIVE PLAN

On March 15, 2016, the Mount announced that H. James Williams, Ph.D., would become its next president after a nine-month search. By fall 2016, campus renovations were complete. The study area in the library was converted into a library café serving Starbucks and grab-and-go food. Lockers located in the ground floor corridor and classroom building were replaced with new furniture featuring USB ports. The cardio room in the Harrington Center was given new equipment, and the newly accredited Physician Assistant Program facilities were moved to the ground floor of the library.

In August, Sister Paula Gonzalez ’52, who built EarthConnection on campus and championed living lightly, passed away.

Christy Cauley ’11, ’07, started working at the Mount in September 2002 as an administrative assistant in the Education Department, later moving to the art department. She started her undergraduate degree in January 2003, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies in May 2007.

She then earned her master’s degree in education in May 2011.

Cauley’s experience paints a picture of what the Mount has done particularly well in the last 19 years—making higher education possible, no matter the situation, thanks to flexibility and a highly individualized approach.

“Taking mostly evening courses can be challenging,” Cauley says. “Creating opportunities like the Summer Institute and CLEP testing helps adult students get their credits in more quickly. I was very pleased to be able to go to school at night and still graduate at the same time as my full-time peers.”

Cauley and her husband, who also received his bachelor’s degree from the Mount, will celebrate 27 years of marriage in December. In 2015, they adopted three children—Kayla, Aidan, and Jacob. Cauley says the Mount helped shape the person she is today, especially in her career as a public relations contractor. “I use the same work ethic now that I did when I was attending the Mount,” she says. “Now is an exciting time to be at the University and I hope my 17-year-old daughter chooses the Mount to be her home for the next four years as well.”

FACULTY & STAFF UPDATES ACCOMPLISHMENTS READING SCIENCE ROCK STAR FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Amy Murdoch, Ph.D., has quite the reputation in the world of teaching, especially when it comes to the subject of reading.

Her recent work demonstrates the breadth of her expertise and the depth of her passion for education.

This past May, Dr. Murdoch completed a program to help provide schools with a low-cost, research-validated, comprehensive literacy program, financed through grants from the SC Ministry Foundation Sister Elise Fund and the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.

Her efforts resulted in significant acceleration of the early language and literacy growth of the children in the project. The program is now available at no cost to any interested educator (visit www.msj.edu/projectready for details).

She is scheduled to share the success of this project at conferences in Dallas (Texas), Syracuse (N.Y.), and Baltimore (Md.).

At the request of the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), Dr. Murdoch also led a team of MSJ Reading Science faculty in writing a set of model syllabi outlining the science of reading in an ODE effort to get more higher education institutions to implement the science of reading in teacher preparation. Squeezed somewhere in between all of these critical initiatives, she also offered a national podcast for Reading Horizon’s Podclassed series titled “Decodable Text, Leveled Text, and All the Rest.”

When she’s not teaching, conducting research, or serving as a speaker at a conference, Dr. Murdoch continues to make a remarkable impact on education in the Cincinnati community. She currently leads efforts to create a doctoral program in reading science in the Mount’s School of Education, where she also serves as chair of graduate education and an associate professor. In addition, Dr. Murdoch is the director of the Mount’s Reading Science Graduate Program—one of the first programs approved by the International Dyslexia Association in the United States.

ENTER STAGE RIGHT STAFF SPOTLIGHT

This past summer, Richard Buchanan was excited about joining the Mount as director of theatre arts. “It has felt like a long time coming, and I’m thrilled to work at this wonderful place,” was the post on his personal website in midAugust. He wasted no time. By the end of that month, he was promoting the new Thursday Night Theatre Labs to students as a fun way to “meet friends and make theatre.”

His energy for expanding theatre opportunities at the Mount is as impressive as the acting, teaching, and directing expertise he brings to his new role.

Buchanan’s favorite directing credits include “The Restaurant” (Interlcohen Arts Camp), “I, Cockroach” (Urbana University), and “The Apartment” (Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Summer Camp). Some of his favorite acting credits include Sam/Juliet in “Shakespeare in Love” (Baltimore Center Stage/Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park), Stanley in “Brighton Beach Memoirs” (Human Race Theatre), and

Ensemble in “Jane Eyre” (Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park). His international performances include working with the Ensemble Aimee Rose in an adaptation of “Faust titled Faust: Sweet Seduction” in Frankfurt, Germany.

Buchanan is a proud member of the 2016-2017 Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and is an active Equity Membership Candidate with the Actor’s Equity Association. He graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the Professional Actor Training Program at Purdue University and a Bachelor of Science from Towson University.

He originally hails from the “land of pleasant living” (known to non-residents as Chesapeake Bay, Md.).

Buchanan’s hobbies are as diverse as his acting and directing talents. Beside podcasts about the zombie apocalypse, small boat sailing, and local authentic Mexican food, he is also a huge fan of clowning around…literally. His clown doctor persona, “Dr. Giacomo,” frequents the halls of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, spreading laughter, silliness, and smiles to one of his favorite audiences.

SISTER JUDITH HONORED WITH ST. ELIZABETH SETON MEDAL Mount St. Joseph University honored Judith Metz ’66, SC, Ph.D., with the St. Elizabeth Seton Medal on Nov. 6 in the Mater Dei Chapel. The award presentation featured a lecture by Dr. Metz, titled “Elizabeth Seton: My Heart Stirred for the Word of God.” Dr. Metz is a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati, as well as an historian and writer. Her notable career spans across professional, public, and academic service, including archival/historical researching and writing, instructing, board appointments, and community service. She has also contributed to

scholarship in multiple disciplines through numerous journal articles and book reviews.

Dr. Metz earned her doctorate in history theology from Union Institute University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Xavier University. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in history from Xavier University.

The Mount’s St. Elizabeth Seton Medal was formally established in 1966 to recognize the educational legacy of its founders, the Sisters of Charity. Named in honor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton— who founded the organization—this award is presented annually to a woman who has made outstanding contributions to an area of theology.

Jamie Bayliss, D.HSc., M.P.T., P.T., ’05, ’04, assistant professor and director of clinical education, is one of the authors of “The Integrated Clinical Education Strategic Initiatives ProjectDevelopment of Parameters to Guide Harmonization in Clinical Education: A Scoping Review,” in the September issue of the Journal of Physical Therapy.

In addition, she and several colleagues jointly presented a webinar, “Criteria for Determining Student Readiness in a Full-time Clinical Education Experience,” through the Ohio Physical Therapy Association.

Sharon Kesterson Bollen, Ed.D., ’68 professor emerita of art, was honored by the Ohio Designer Craftsmen with its 2019 Award for Outstanding Achievement in recognition of her “major contribution to fine craft in Ohio through creative and technical excellence, broadening the field of knowledge, and professional accomplishments that will be an enduring inspiration for future generations.”

Elizabeth Bookser Barkley, Ph.D., ’70 professor of English and chair of the Department of Liberal Arts, was published in the September 2019 issue of St. Anthony Messenger magazine.

Her article, “A Higher Education,” focused on the importance of mission and the founder’s charism to Catholic universities.

Carolyn Boland, M.S.L.S., web developer and applications administrator, won second place in the Reports/System Utilities category at the annual software contest sponsored by the National Association of CX/JX Users. Her entry, “XML Course Schedule (for Microsoft Excel),” is a software program that the registrar’s office can use to create course schedule data that is easy to review and share.

Jordan Carmosino, M.S., A.T., ’14 instructor in the Department of Athletic Training, participated in the Free Communications Poster Presentation at the 2019 National Athletic Trainers’ Association Clinical Symposia & AT Expo in Las Vegas in June. The title of

Charles-Liscombe, Ed.D., A.T., A.T.C., presented “Adverse Childhood Experiences and the Social Determinants of Health” at the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association Annual Meeting held in Mason, Ohio, in May. He was also elected to a two-year term as vice president of Intra Association Affairs for the OATA in October. In addition, Dr. Charles-Liscombe and Erin Lewis, M.Ed., athletic training department assistant professor and clinical education coordinator, served on the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon Weekend medical staff along with junior and senior athletic training students.

In June, he conducted a learning lab on assessing the eye, ear, nose, and throat at the National Athletic Trainers Association Annual Meeting and Athletic Training Expo in Las Vegas. Finally, Dr. Charles-Liscombe presented “Virginia Woolf Seen Through the Lens of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study” with Janet Wray, Ph.D., M.N., B.S.N., associate professor in the Department of Nursing, at the International Virginia Woolf Conference held at the Mount in June.

Caleb Corrill, B.A., football offensive coordinator, had an article titled “Thoughts from a First-Year Offensive Coordinator” published on insider.afca.com by the American Football Coaches Association this past summer.

Kelly Crowe, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, was elected to the Executive Committee of the University of Cincinnati’s Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society.

Dr. Crowe was also appointed to the scientific advisory committee of the Neuromuscular Disease Foundation, an organization that promotes advocacy and research for rare neuromuscular diseases.

Mary Kay Fleming, Ph.D., professor of psychology, authored a chapter in Generally Speaking: The Impact of General Education on Student Learning in the 21st Century, published by Myers Education Press. She also became

a mentor for students interested in psychology careers at her alma mater, Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, Ky. Dr. Fleming continues to publish creative nonfiction in her spare time and took first place in the National Society for Newspaper Columnists annual humorwriting contest.

Jeffrey Hillard, M.A., M.F.A., had his novella, The Alponso Rap, published in October by WriteLight Media. The work of fiction is part of his Shine in Bedlam Historical Mystery Adventure Series for young adult and adult readers.

Erin Hofmeyer, M.P.T., D.P.T., ’08, ’03, ’02, instructor and assistant director of clinical education, and Jamie Bayliss, presented “Seven Days in Heroin: An Interprofessional Approach to Addressing Addiction and the Opioid Epidemic” at the American Physical Therapy Association Educational Leadership Conference, held in October in Bellevue, Wash. The interactive presentation examined the Opioid Epidemic through a viewing of the Cincinnati Enquirer article, “The Seven Days of Heroin.”

Eric Johnson, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of chemistry, was a 2019 PROSE Award Finalist for his work, Anxiety and the Equation: Understanding Boltzmann’s Entropy. The book was also recognized in the Popular Science and Popular Mathematics category by the Association of American Publishers. Dr. Johnson also published an essay, “The Perils of Being Paul Ehrenfest, a Forgotten Physicist and Peerless Mentor,” in the MIT Press Reader (the essay was later republished on www.Salon.com). In addition to his work on the history of science, he co-authored a paper titled “Effect of monovalent ion binding on molecular dynamics of the S100-family calciumbinding protein calbindin D9k,” in the Journal of Computational Chemistry.

Gene Kritsky, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Biology and dean of the School of Behavioral & Natural Sciences, has been elected as a Fellow of the Entomological Society of America. This is the national society’s highest honor, with only 10 fellowships awarded each year.

FACULTY & STAFF UPDATES NEW HIRES Keith Lanser, M.A., associate director of service learning and civic engagement, moderated the “Three Rivers Meet the Candidates Night” in October, providing the candidates for Three Rivers School Board an opportunity to engage with the public. He also wrote a successful application for the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, which resulted in Mount St. Joseph University being awarded the Gold Seal in November 2019 for its student voting rate of 45.3 percent during the 2018 general election.

In addition, Lanser wrote a successful grant application to the Cambridge Charitable Foundation that resulted in a $5,000 grant awarded to the Mount for student philanthropy.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL CELEBRATES 50 YEARS As the Mount community celebrates 100 years of educational excellence, the University’s most successful athletic program is commemorating its own milestone achievement. With the beginning of the fall 2019 season, the women’s volleyball program has entered its 50th year of play.

The team’s inaugural season in 1969 began under legendary Head Coach Kay Corcoran and immediately set the stage for a legacy of excellence following two consecutive 15-0 seasons and only five lost matches over the first five years. In fact, the Lions posted 11 consecutive winning seasons through 1980.

The volleyball team continued its run of success in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics throughout the 1980s until a tough 1988 season led to the hiring of Mary Ann Broderick

as the new head coach. Under her guidance, the Lions began another run of dominance across the next five years until Broderick left and John Spinney took over as interim coach.

When Head Coach Michele Benoit was hired, the team eyed a move to NCAA Division III prior to the 1998 season that landed them in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC). The powerhouse Lions went on to dominate the league over the next nine seasons, losing only a single HCAC match while qualifying for the NCAA DIII championship tournament every year. Across 15 years, the team made the national tournament 12 times, including three consecutive seasons from 1999 to 2001.

The teams recently welcomed back Head Coach John Spinney to recapture

its glory days. He returned to the Mount after a successful run at Thomas More University.

“I am extremely excited to get this program back to one of national prominence,” says Spinney. “With that in mind, I am excited to get to work and look forward to great alumni support this season and beyond.”

Some of that alumni support has already made a huge impact. At the Mount’s Oct. 30 match against Transylvania, to help celebrate the program’s 50th anniversary, nearly 50 former players and coaches showed up in attendance. The group took part in a pregame reception and were recognized for their contributions to this distinguished MSJ athletics program.

Assistant women’s softball coach DeeDee Morris has been selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as the National Division III Assistant Coach of the Year.

DEEDEE MORRIS NAMED NFCA ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR Assistant women’s softball coach DeeDee Morris has been selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as the National Division III assistant coach of the year. She joined the softball program staff five years ago and, since her arrival, the team has steadily climbed up

the HCAC standings. That culminated last year in the Lions first-ever HCAC regular season championship following a record of 33-5, earning the right to host the HCAC tournament for the first time in program history.

Over the course of the 2018-19 academic year, the Mount has had more than 80 student-athletes named to academic all-conference teams, including top spots in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference, and the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League. Within the HCAC itself (where the majority of MSJ athletics programs are situated), the university landed 75 student-athletes on the Tom Bohlsen Academic All-HCAC list, which requires a GPA of 3.5 or more.

“IT’S NOT FOUR YEARS, IT’S FOR LIFE” When on the Mount’s campus, students form friendships and relationships with classmates, teammates, faculty, and staff.

Friends and advisors turn into family, and the community begins to feel like a second home. Some would assume that once those four magical years spent at Mount St. Joseph University are over, many of these bonds slowly break away.

However, that is not the case with our alumni! Even though after graduation many of them go separate ways to chase after career goals, start a family, or volunteer their time for a worthy cause, they still find ways to reconnect with former classmates and those who made their time at the Mount special.

ALUMNI UPDATES MAKING AN IMPACT IN IT FOR THE LONG RUN

In the late 1980s, if someone had told Peggy Isenogle ’90 that she’d be one of four women to establish the Susan G. Komen Southwest Ohio Affiliate, she would have questioned such a bold statement. Back then, she was a firstyear MSJ student and confident that her future was in nursing or teaching.

But things soon changed. Isenogle’s first chemistry class proved difficult and though she had a tutor, the experience made her re-examine her academic major. After taking her first psychology class with Professor Mary Kay Fleming, Ph.D., Isenogle wanted to learn more.

She went on to study more psychology, as well as business and marketing under former faculty members Bill Welsh and Joe Ahern, all of whom recognized Isenogle’s business savvy.

Isenogle epitomizes the moxie of MSJ students—determined, courageous, and eager to succeed. In addition, she was part of a group of older female students

returning to the Mount to expand their career opportunities. (Isenogle eventually graduated from the Mount two weeks before her oldest child graduated high school).

“What I found to be so unique and wonderful about the Mount was the sincere interest the professors took in their students, while instilling a foundation of personal values and the importance of giving back,” Isenogle says. “The quality of education I received and the relationships I still have with people from the Mount are both remarkable.”

Isenogle was soon on her way, beginning with a career in business, and later thriving at a company that managed associations and events. In 1996, a coworker mentioned helping with the Race for the Cure, an event that supported the fight against breast cancer. It was an easy decision—years earlier, a close friend of Isenogle had lost her battle with breast cancer. She didn’t hesitate, unaware that her decision would lead to an even more fulfilling career.

In 1997, she joined three other women to establish the Komen Southwest Ohio Affiliate. Two years later, she chaired the third annual Race for the Cure and later guided the affiliate through the incorporation process. Since 2003, she has continued to serve as the organization’s executive director.

One of Isenogle’s goals is to secure funding that advances a possible cure for metastatic breast cancer. Her organization currently donates $150,000

annually to support this research, working closely with the University of Pittsburgh. She is also proud of her organization’s efforts to create a “safety net program” so every woman who contacts the Komen Southwest Ohio Affiliate can get early breast cancer screenings and, if needed, support from patient navigators to guide them through the health care system.

Being immersed in an organization of people and volunteers who are dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer is where Isenogle knows she belongs. She believes that one of her greatest privileges is being a part of people’s lives during one of their greatest struggles. Isenogle credits her success to the guidance and encouragement she received at the Mount, and to years of honing her skills in adapting to change and navigating relationships.

Today, sharing ideas and encouragement come naturally to this MSJ alumna. To the new students, she offers this advice: “Seek knowledge and experiences beyond the classroom.

Nine-tenths of the college experience and later success come from being engaged at every level.”

To recent MSJ graduates, her sentiments echo back to what she has learned and values the most: “Focus more on where you are and what you are doing, and less on what you are earning.

One day, everything will fall into place— including the irreplaceable relationships and the success.”

ALUMNI UPDATES DONOR PROFILE DONOR PROFILE: ANN SALUKE, M.D., ’76

In 1971, Ann Saluke, M.D., ’76, attended a college night at the University of Dayton.

By chance, she met a representative from the Mount. A shy student who kept to herself, Dr. Saluke wasn’t interested in a big campus experience. She preferred smaller class sizes, a liberal arts focus, and the Catholic education available at the Mount.

It proved to be the perfect fit.

As one of 10 children, Dr. Saluke knew if she wanted to attend college, she could not expect her parents to pay a significant portion of her college tuition. But her grades were top notch, and she qualified for the Seton Scholar award, earning a full-tuition scholarship, which she called “icing on the cake” that cemented her decision to attend the Mount.

Dr. Saluke started her program in medical technology before switching to chemistry a year later. After working as a student worker in the library, she asked to be relocated somewhere more geared toward her interests. She then worked making solutions for the Mount chemistry labs. “It was like my little shop,” recalls Dr. Saluke.

After earning her MSJ degree, she attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and conducted her pediatric residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

However, she credits her MSJ liberal arts education for helping her prepare for graduate school.

“When I took the medical college admissions test, there was a liberal arts section that encompassed questions about history, literature, music, art,

and vocabulary,” says Dr. Saluke. “It was a very different test than it is now, and you were assessed based from that perspective. The Mount prepared me to be a well-rounded individual who had the capacity to learn the science needed as well as other disciplines.”

Dr. Saluke was the first female to join the Anderson Hills Pediatrics community practice in Cincinnati, where she worked for 30 years with families and kids she watched grow from birth until college.

In addition, she worked with the child abuse team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for 17 years, and for several years traveled to Georgetown, Ohio, to work monthly at a clinic. She also taught residents and served as president of both the Cincinnati Pediatric Society and the medical dental staff at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, in addition to chair of the pediatrics section at Mercy Hospital Anderson. After Dr. Saluke retired in 2013, she worked for more than three years with the Children’s Home of Cincinnati doing behavioral and mental health evaluations in Cincinnati public schools.

“It is an incredible privilege to care for people,” she says. “Being able to work with a family over time, you get to watch everyone grow and develop—the parents as well as the kids.”

Looking back at her years at the Mount, Dr. Saluke adds that the school was a great place for personal development.“The Mount was and is about excellence in academics but also about service to others. And I followed that model of service when approaching

my career—serving families, colleagues, and my community.”

For more than 30 years, Dr. Saluke has also been an MSJ donor and joined its Board of Trustees in 2018. “I give the Mount lots of credit for opening the path that I never dreamed possible when I was younger,” she says. “It made an incredible difference in my life.”

Her parents also influenced her philanthropy. Even with 10 children, her mother and father always found the resources to provide her siblings with a Catholic education throughout their grade school and high school years. “Everybody can give in whatever ways they can,” notes Dr. Saluke, “whether it’s volunteering a few hours or making a financial gift.”

She considers it a personal responsibility to continue moving her alma mater forward into the 21st century.

“I keep in mind the mission and vision of the Mount and the Sisters of Charity,” Dr. Saluke adds.

I chose the Mount because my cousin was an MSJ recruiter at my high school.

I was unaware he even worked for a university. He advised me to visit the Mount. I would not regret it and he was right. He actually got me involved with professors and staff who played basketball during lunch, so when possible, I would schedule my classes around the time they would play.

The professors are more hands on due to the number of students in the class.

They actually take time to learn their names and they care about their classes and the students.

I can honestly say that, if it were not for the Mount, I would not be where I am today. A professor pulled me aside

and told me about an internship when I was a sophomore. This internship turned into a full-time position after graduation.

The most beneficial class for me was learning how to work on spreadsheets, which was required for all business majors. At work, they actually refer to me as the “Excel wizard.” The CEO and CFO will send me data and ask me to put it in a certain layout and jokingly say, “I bet you can’t complete this in time.”

With the tools and knowledge I learned at MSJ, I have excelled in my career. I valued the Mount and my education so much that, when I decided to get my master’s degree, I did not even think twice about where I would go.

I was not a traditional student. Upon retiring from P&G after 34 years, I wanted to pursue a lifelong interest in art.

My goal was a B.F.A. in sculpture. My first call was to the University of Cincinnati, where I’d received my undergraduate degree in chemical engineering.

A computer greeted me. Then, I called the Art Academy. They were friendly and asked for a portfolio.

Later that day, I called the Mount. Jerry Bellas answered and asked right then if I was available. After I met with him, he escorted me to the registrar, where I learned that I could receive full credit for my work at UC and my graduate school work in Oklahoma.

I attended the Mount from 2002 to 2005, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA. I absolutely loved every single art class. Dan Mader was my mentor and other students welcomed me as a peer and colleague—even though I was old enough to be their grandfather.

Without exception, I found every faculty member to be knowledgeable, engaging, and dedicated. I found that to be true throughout the Mount, even beyond the Art Department. For more than 10 years, it was my pleasure to volunteer as a sculpture teaching assistant for Dan Mader.

In short, I love the Mount.

My memories of the Mount include climbing out the window of a dorm room onto the roof above the Seton Hall lobby where we would sunbathe. There was also the time I played the organ in the choir loft of the Mater Dei Chapel after rehearsing for a wedding. I didn’t realize there was Mass scheduled to start—I was playing “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” as the attendees were coming in!

I fondly remember the wonder of my first Christmas at the Mount when I was awakened during the night to come to the “winter wonderland” in the lobby. There

were also fun times at the SGA square dance at a barn on the grounds of the old Mount.

Finally, I recall participating in a Red Cross disaster drill. Unfortunately, I actually got hurt when a rescuer pulled me past a jagged area on a seat frame.

I was cut across my leg and had to be transported and treated at an emergency room. The injury was circled and labeled “real injury” to stand out from the makeup that was part of the drill.

Lots of memories like this contributed to lots of fun!

ALUMNI UPDATES CLASS NOTES 1960s

The Mount history class, “Sea, Sail, and Song: Early American Maritime History,” traveled to Maine as part of their coursework to experience maritime culture at its core. During a stop in Portland, alumna Mary Jo Briselden ’61 met the students at a waterfront park.

The group (pictured below), along with Peter Robinson, Ph.D., Elizabeth Bookser Barkley, Ph.D., ’70, Jessee Smith ’99, and Gene Kritsky, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Biology and dean of the School of Behavioral & Natural Sciences, took time to discuss their studies and engage in great conversation.

Rose (Bauer) Koch ’76 saw her 1977 Mother of Mercy volleyball team inducted into the Buddy LaRosa High School Sports Hall of Fame. Then a first-year head coach, she guided Mercy to a 27-0 record that included the Class AAA OHSAA state championship. Her Mercy volleyball teams advanced to the state semifinals or finals five times during her first six years, winning state championships in 1980 and 1982.

Peggy Minnich ’86, ’04 is serving the Mount Community as the dean of admission, and is excited to be part of the history and planning for the future, as the University celebrates 100 years of educating students.

Dr. Satinder S. Bharaj ’87 is now an entrepreneur working on four start up companies after having been with P&G for 27 years as a R&D manager in health and personal care.

1990s 1970s

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the appointment of Kathyleen “Kathy” Clarke Kunkel ’73 as the state’s Secretary for the Department of Health. Kunkel has worked seven years across different areas of the department, most recently as deputy director overseeing behavioral supports, regional offices, litigation management, and supported employment for developmental disabilities.

Juliann Dorff ’74 of Kent, Ohio, was awarded the Council for Exceptional Children VSA Beverly Levett Gerber Special Needs Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Art Education Association. This honor recognizes those who have made a strong impact on art education’s role in the lives of people with special needs.

Nicole Lindsey ’99 of Cincinnati completed her second master’s degree, a Master of Library and Information Sciences with K-12 school librarian certification, from Kent State University.

Brian Henn ’96 was appointed as vice president of delivery and data practice director at Vaco in Mason, Ohio.

With extensive experience in IT and management within the Fortune 100 and above companies, he is focused on helping businesses reach their objectives through technology and data.

Mike Lind ’00 of Cincinnati and his wife, Amy, welcomed daughter Corinne on March 5, 2019.

Eric Johnson ’03 was named executive director for CASA of Tulare County, Calif. In addition, he and his wife, Tuesdee Johnson, welcomed a baby boy named DaMarkus Bear Johnson on March 19, 2019.

Jason Umberg, Sr., ’04 serves as the assistant principal at Bishop Fenwick High School, where he helped institute a Substance Use Prevention and Intervention Program during the 201819 school year. Hair samples from all 525 students were tested during the 2018-19 school year, selected at random times throughout the year. Fenwick’s positive rate was 1.5 percent, the lowest in the state of Ohio matched by only one other school. The positive rate for Ohio’s private high schools was 4.25 percent, and the national average is 30 percent.

Joni Huber ’05 of Batesville, Ind., was recognized as one of 39 honorees in the Hoosier Women Artists competition for her piece, “Colored Currents,” a mixed media collage created with acrylic paint.

Vicki Vitucci Ramstetter ’08 and husband Tom welcomed Bowen Anthony Ramstetter on Nov. 12, 2019, in Durham, N.C. Big sisters, Gwenna (4) and Tessa (2) are loving the new addition.

William J. Beach II ’10 of Beverly, Mass., is corporate manager with the Greater Boston Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Albin Waldbilig ’11 started a full time position at Mount St. Joseph University as theatre technical manager.

Zachary Hacker ’12 published his debut novel, Cut Reality, on April 16, 2019.

Rustica Kayombo, OSB, ’17, ’16 returned to her native Tanzania and is supervising the construction of the Saint Joseph Surgery Center. The facility is part of a larger complex that includes a school, vocational education, clinic, and child care services. Kayombo notes how grateful she is to the Mount for her education, which gave her the skills to oversee these programs.

NEW INDUCTEES HONORED AT ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME On Oct. 4, nearly 200 friends, family, and alumni gathered to celebrate the 10th annual Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony. Many former inductees also attended the event, which recognizes outstanding MSJ student-athletes, coaches, and others who have made strong contributions to the Mount’s legacy of excellence in athletics.

This year’s class included former basketball and softball player Robin Theising Maxwell ’98, Tammi Toney Wait ’05—one of the most decorated players in the history of the volleyball program—and football player Mike

Lovell ’07, who won three consecutive championships with the Lions from 2004 to 2006.

In addition, faculty members Georgana Taggart, J.D., and Karl P. Power ’00 were honored with the Champion Award for their dedication to MSJ student-athletes. Dr. Taggart joined the MSJ Athletics Committee in 1996 and, since 2000, has served as the national parliamentarian for NCAA Division III. During his time at the Mount, Power has volunteered hundreds of hours for the Athletics Department as a freelance photographer. Since 2009, he

has served as assistant coach to the men’s and women’s golf teams.

The Athletic Hall of Fame is a rich tradition at the Mount, providing an opportunity for former teammates to reconnect with one another and coaches.

This event also provides an opportunity for current MSJ student-athletes to see those who have come before them and how the Mount has shaped their lives and careers.

Alumni, faculty, staff, students, and Delhi residents participated in the Homecoming Weekend festivities.

A HOMECOMING BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER! Homecoming Weekend is always a fun and lively time on campus. This year’s celebration was even more spectacular— thanks to our Centennial Celebration!

On Oct. 4, the Music Department hosted an open house in the newly renovated Music Rehearsal Room. In the 1960s, the space was originally a music room. It was later the location of the Mount’s printing room, and most recently the space was used for storage

and office. Totaling more than 2,700 square feet, the room has recently been transformed into a permanent music practice room—complete with new paint, carpet, air conditioning and heating system, updated lighting, and acoustical sound enhancements.

The following day, Lions Park was transformed into a fun, festive environment for alumni, students, family, and friends to celebrate

Homecoming Weekend. Performers included Circus Mojo, a caricature artist, and a DJ. In addition, alumni reunion events were held for both the football team and the wrestling teams.

To cap it all, the MSJ Lions football team dominated Defiance with a 59-6 win.

Following the big game, Father Jamie Weber ’90 led Homecoming Mass in the Mater Dei Chapel.

REUNION UPDATE

Reunion has moved! Last year, Reunion Weekend was moved from the traditional first weekend in June timeframe to join Homecoming Weekend. This change allows our alumni to return to a lively, student-filled campus that will surely remind them of their time here as a student. This year, we honored the Golden Anniversary Class of 1969 as well as the Classes of 1974, 1979, 1994, and as always, our Royal Mountees (those who graduated more than 50 years ago).

The weekend kicked off with a gathering at the home of Kathy (Oliver) Berniger ’69 for the Golden Anniversary class (both Berniger and Jane Nieman ’69

co-chaired this event). Her home was filled with the love, laughter, and stories of her classmates as they reconnected and reminisced about their time as students. Members of the classes of 1974, 1979, and 1994 joined the Music Rehearsal Room opening event and Athletic Hall of Fame to kick off their reunion weekend.

On Saturday, our reunion classes were invited back for Homecoming events including the tailgate, the football game, and Homecoming Mass. Following Mass, we hosted the reunions for the annual Reunion Awards dinner where we honored three outstanding alumnae.

Micki Benz ’69 received the Alumni

Career Achievement award, which recognizes alumni who have excelled in careers or vocations. Carol McIlvoy Kersting ’69 was awarded the Sister Mary Lea Muller Human Service award, which honors alumni who have devoted their lives to the service of others. The Loretta Richards Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor bestowed on alumni for their lifetime achievements, was presented to Cathie Conrad Dotzauer ’69.

IN REMEMBRANCE SR. JOHN MIRIAM JONES ’54, SC Sr. John Miriam Jones died Nov. 3, 2019, at the age of 95 in Mother Margaret Hall, the nursing facility of the Sisters of Charity. Sr. John Miriam was born Mary Martha Jones on Feb. 22, 1924, to John C. and Mary (White) Jones in Chattanooga, Tenn. She was an only child. She was a Sister of Charity for 76 years.

Sr. John Miriam grew up in Denver, Colo., having moved there when her father was in search of work during the depression. She attended Cathedral Elementary and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1942 where she was taught by the Sisters of Charity. After high school, she enrolled at Loretta Heights College in Denver. It was while on a retreat at the Heights that she had a clear sense of God’s personal invitation to religious life. She called it, “a touching moment of grace.” Sr. John Miriam entered the Sisters of Charity the following September in 1943.

Sr. John Miriam earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from the College of Mount St. Joseph in 1954 and a Master of Science degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind., in 1961. She earned a Ph.D. in microbiology in 1970 from the University of Notre Dame.

Sr. John Miriam’s ministries spanned more than 50 years in education as teacher, principal, and administrator. In her early years she taught in Chicago, Cincinnati, and Albuquerque, N.M., as well as Pueblo, Denver, and Trinidad in Colorado. In 1989, she was elected the Central Region’s provincial for the Sisters of Charity and came to Cincinnati. After eight years in this role, and following a brief sabbatical, she agreed to become the dean of academics at the College of Mount St. Joseph (1997-2001). This was her last formal ministry effort, one that afforded her gifted coworkers at the Mount.

Throughout her varied experiences of ministry, Sr. John Miriam often commented on how truly happy her life has been. “I have come to a sincere love of those with whom I share the title Sister; the various ministries have left me with good friends with whom I served or with whom I ministered.”

Sr. John Miriam was honored by the University of Notre Dame with the 1987 James E. Armstrong Award, which is given to an alumnus/alumna who is a current employee and has rendered distinguished service to the school. In 1995, she received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph. In 1999, she was one of the inaugural initiates into Notre Dame’s Wall of Honor. The plaque, commemorating her service, reads: “In 1972, the University underwent historic change, becoming a coeducational institution of higher learning. Sister Jones directed that transition with an impressive blend of imagination, grace, and humor.”

This held true for all endeavors she undertook. In her retirement years she remained active, teaching part-time at the Mount and the Athenaeum of Ohio, along with giving talks and retreats.

IN MEMORY OF ALICE “PAT” HEVERIN MOONEY ’54 In memory of Alice “Pat” Heverin Mooney ’54, who passed away on May 9, 2019, the following was shared by her daughter, Kathleen. Alice wrote this poem for her 50th Mount reunion in 2004: Born from the Great Depression, flowers of consolation and hope, we were the innocents: the beautiful almost-nuns, the doe-eyed virgins who had never slept anywhere else than under our fathers’ roofs.

We fell in and out of love with those war-shadowed boys: sons and grandsons of warriors, speaking loudly, dancing awkwardly, whispering in our eager, dream-numbed ears.

We met in understanding and trust. we knew each other: sisters and scholars, fresh from our minor triumphs and disappointments.

In our four years together, we built a world: our own covenant, and vowed to keep all our promises.

We walked the same paths, danced the same steps with similar partners to tunes we still can sing.

Where did we go— the beautiful girls who could accomplish everything?

We survived the storm of wars the storms of love and separation and the darker storms of disappointment.

What we return today is a measure of gratitude to the covenant we built, the world created here when we were the Midwest innocents, the beautiful girls let out of our fathers’ homes into mid century chaos, but armed with the benedictions of faith and hope, knowledge and charity.

We stepped from these havens into the abyss of promise and some of us survived.
