We believe in miracles Christmas is a time for giving - and Miracle Babies received a gift from Mounties Group a little early this year.

Every year in Australia around 48,000 newborn babies require the help of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Special Care Nursery. 27,000 of these babies are born premature and up to 1,000 babies lose their fight for life.

For parents, the experience of having a premature baby or sick newborn can be daunting and life changing and it is for this reason support organisations such as the Miracle Babies Foundation exist.

Since 2005, Miracle Babies Foundation has developed programs and resources to support

families experiencing premature birth throughout their journey from the hospital, to home and beyond.

Mounties Group donated $20,000 to the organisation in October to provide specialised peer support for families in Fairfield Hospital’s Special Care Nursery.

“The Foundation not only provides vital support, education and resources for families of premature or sick newborns, but also helps create meaningful communities that empower families and children to reach their goals,” said Mounties Group President, Kevin Ingram.

Miracle Babies Foundation CEO Kylie Pussell said “We are blessed to have the support of the local community and are grateful to receive a generous donation from Mounties Group”.

Oh, What a Night!

It’s that time of the year again where we identify, recognise, and encourage the outstanding efforts of our Sub Club sports stars. Mounties Sub Clubs held their presentation and awards night on October 27 at Club Italia – and what a night it was!

Magician and comedian Phil Cass putting on an allround great night of entertainment, which Director Lorraine Dean said members are still talking about.

“The food was fantastic, and staff were great,” Lorraine says.

Junior Sportsperson went to Mereana Peyroux from Mounties Netball Club, who has been a member for eight years. Mereana has been a representative player with Liverpool City Netball Association for the fourth year running, amongst other achievements.

She also gives back to the Mounties Netball community by coaching and umpiring.

The Senior Sportsperson was awarded to Simaima Taufa from Mounties Women’s Rugby League.

Simaima has had a long list of achievements this year including (but not limited to!) being named NSWRL State of Origin Women’s Player of the Year; ANZAC Test Player’s Player; Harvey Norman NSW State Player of the Year; Rugby League Players’ Association Women’s Player of the Year; 2017 Dally M Female Player of the Year; and Australian Jillaroos Women’s Player of the Year.

Simaima was also the only Western Sydney player picked to represent Australia in the Rugby League World Cup. She also works hard on raising the profile of Women’s Rugby League in the Western Sydney community through volunteering at sporting clinics and at local schools as well as passing on her skills and experience to emerging players at Mounties.

“Good luck to everyone for the year to come! Roll on the 2018 Sub Club presentation!” Lorraine said.

Christmas

The meaning of Christmas to us at Mounties Group is formulated around the foundations of giving, family, community and belonging. Our goal is to provide multiple opportunities for members and guests to experience the joys and spirit of Christmas as a community.

Our annual member-exclusive Christmas Carnival comprises of two jam packed days of excitement and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. And we promise this year’s carnival is going to be bigger and better!

O Come, All Ye Faithful to our much-loved Mounties Annual Christmas Carols open for the whole community, bringing everyone together to stand in a shared hope for peace, harmony and good cheer.

So often we get so caught up in the commercial and fun side of Christmas that we forget the reason behind the season. Christmas is the season of giving, whether that be donating time, money or efforts.

Everyone at Mounties is doing their bit. Ignite Health & Fitness is participating in an annual collection of toys and non-perishable foods for the Toys n’ Tucker Anglicare Christmas Appeal Initiative. Flamez Hair Dezign is donating $2 from all gift voucher purchases to The Children’s Hospital in Westmead in January and December.

Pavlova

Seeing as it’s Christmas, I’ve got a national treasure for you this month. If you don’t know how to already, you’re about to make the greatest thing to come out of Australia since Neighbours – Pavlova!

Jonathon Flanagan Head Chef, Fresh at Mounties Equipment • 1 sheet of baking paper • 1 electric mixer

Ingredients

recipe OF THE MONTH PREP TIME

30 minutes

COOK TIME 2 hours

SERVES 12 people

• 4 egg whites • 1 cup caster sugar • 1 tsp lemon juice • 2 tsp cornflour

Method 1. Preheat fan forced oven to 130 ˚C. 2. In a small bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form.

3. It’s only step 3 and you’re nearly done. How easy is this? Add your lemon juice and caster sugar. Sift the cornflour in and beat until stiff and glossy. Don’t just throw the cornflour in, you’ll get nasty lumps that don’t taste good.

4. Cover a baking tray with the baking paper.

5. Pile the meringue onto the paper and shape into a circle. Seeing as it’s Christmas, let’s make this look like a wreath - make a hole in the middle of the meringue and open it up, so it resembles a tyre. If you’re handy with a piping bag, create separate circles in this form.

6. Bake at 130˚C for 1½ hours or until crisp on the outside. Meringue needs to be baked soon after whipping so the egg whites don’t start to break down and deflate.

7. Turn the oven off and leave the pavlova to cool in oven with door ajar.

8. Decorate with whipped cream and fruit in season.

55 - ALIVE As we get older and our bodies change, our ability to tolerate alcohol changes too. In these circumstances drinking less would be the ideal way to enjoy your drink more. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare noted that an increasing number of over 50’s are consuming eleven or more standard drinks in one drinking session.

Young people usually get the blame for binge drinking, but Australian health experts say it’s their parents and grandparents who are binging on alcohol at an alarming rate.

According to the Liverpool City Ageing Strategy Plan 2015-2017, the population aged 55 and over comprises 24% of the total resident population and is expected to increase in coming years.

With this in mind, Odyssey House successfully applied for $20,000 in Mounties Group CLUBgrants funding to create the 55 Alive Pilot Program which aims to enhance the quality of life for people aged 55 years and over, who are concerned about their use of alcohol and drugs.

Four education sessions were held where affected participants and their families could focus on their wellbeing and reduction strategies. Care coordination for individuals including intervention counselling, referrals to support services, and agency liaison was also provided, facilitated by a counsellor. The sessions were run by experienced members of the Odyssey House team as part of its commitment to a world free of addiction. More sessions will be held in 2018.

Couple Goals!

Dennis and Lynn Smith’s 50th anniversary It’s the kind of love story that gives us hope.

She was an 18-year-old on a working holiday from Western Australia; he was 22, and seeing her with her friends at the Chatswood Charles Hotel, decided to just walk up and start chatting with her. And so began the love story of Lynn and Dennis Smith, who celebrated their golden anniversary on September 30 in The Elizabeth Room at Mounties.

They built a house on the block of land that they’d purchased in Mount Pritchard before their wedding, where they raised their children and continue to live in today.

And their secret to a good, long-lasting marriage?

“I picked a good wife!” Dennis said. “Communication’s a big thing. We’ve had bumps in the road like all marriages. Overall, we’ve stuck by each other. That’s very important.”

It’s not the first time their friends and family have joined Lynn and Dennis at Mounties for a milestone event - Dennis, who has been a member since 1977 (with Lynn joining formally in 1998) celebrated his 70th birthday in The Elizabeth Room a few years ago, too.

“We complement each other,” Lynn added. “If I need him, he’s going to be there, and vice versa.

Lynn and Dennis have called Mount Pritchard home for their 50 year marriage. After their wedding in Western Australia, where Lynn’s family was, they hopped on the train and returned to Sydney the very same day. Their honeymoon was the three-day journey back.

Seeing love thrive and endure for so long is not only heart-warming, it’s inspirational. It gives us great pleasure to congratulate Dennis and Lynn on this fabulous milestone.

PINK RIBBON CHARITY

Luncheon

Pink cakes, flowers, table cloths, pink ribbons and a sea of pink guests flooded Triglav on October 6 as it hosted its third annual Pink Ribbon fundraiser.

To say the event was a success is an understatement - $6,800 was raised for the Cancer Council, more than double what was raised in 2016, thanks to the generous donations of attendees and their participation in multiple fundraising activities including silent auctions, the money tree and Triglav’s famous balloon game.

And of course, when the word pink and glamour is mentioned it is guaranteed that the fabulous Lady Kinmee, yodelling drag queen, is present!

Lady hosted the event and entertained audiences throughout the day with her incredible vocals and humerous flair.

Special guests included Fairfield City Council Mayor, Clr Frank Carbone, and Denise Daynes of the Cancer Council. Denise presented a short informative session that revealed one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by 85.

However, thanks to research, a woman diagnosed today has a 90% chance of surviving for more than five years.

With additional funds raised at Mounties and a generous donation of $5,000 by the Mounties Group Board of Directors, a total of $12,074.35 will be presented to the Cancer Council this month.
