MOUNTIES GROUP DONATES $650,000 TO COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS Mounties Group has given more than $650,000 to over 40 community groups in need, through its annual ClubGRANTS program, at an official presentation that took place on Thursday, 2 August. The Group recognises the importance of these organisations and the role they play in benefiting our community. The money donated from ClubGRANTS goes towards projects that impact our society. They include: mental healthcare, aged care, disability, youth services, multicultural projects and family support initiatives. Les Powell School relieving principal Sandra Acevedo-Rugg said Mounties’ $42,642 donation to Wheels Towards Independence – the charity that supports the school which caters for students with a diverse range of complex learning and support needs – couldn’t have come at a better time.

The money will go towards installing new fitness equipment and upgrading the bicycle track to allow for students with severe and multiple disabilities to engage in fitness programs to improve their general health and wellbeing. Kevin Ingram, Mounties Group President, said: “The ClubGRANTS are a fantastic opportunity for the Mounties Group to give back to our local community and is an event we look forward to every year. We are very appreciative of the incredible work that these groups do and are inspired by of the projects that are happening this year. By helping these local community groups, we hope that we can keep encouraging others to make a positive impact in the communities where we operate.”

MOUNTIES WOMEN IN THEIR OWN LEAGUE Mounties’ has claimed the 2018 Harvey Norman Women’s Rugby League premiership with a gripping 12-10 victory in the final. Going into the game as underdogs, the women from Mounties fought hard to stave off competition favourites and minor premiers, South Sydney. Played as a curtain raiser to the NRL game South Sydney v Roosters, the girls lined up against a side boasting seven current Jillaroo and NSW

Origin players. But that did not stop the girls, led from the front by captain Sharnita Woodman. Player of the match was none other than Mounties’ super star and 2017 Dally M Women’s Player of the Year, Simaima Taufa. Taufa scored one of two tries in the game, the other being awarded to Patricia Raikadroka. This is Mounties’ first Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership and is certain to serve inspiration to our men’s teams – who at the time of publication were semifinal bound in the Intrust Super Premiership, Ron Massey Cup and Jersey Flegg competitions.

MOUNTIES WANDERERS GRAND FINAL BERTH Mounties Wanderers FC has fallen agonisingly short in the grand final of the men’s National Premier League (NPL) 2. In a meteoric end to the season under new coach, Terry Palapanis, the Wanderers came back from 0-2 down against St George FC. With the scores locked at 3-all at the end of extra time, the two rivals were forced into a penalty shootout which St George claimed 4-3. Congrats to the Wanderers on an epic season! HONEY-SPICED SALMON WITH QUINOA SALAD

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

1 cup quinoa 2 scallions 2 limes, plus extra wedges for serving 2 tbsp oil 1 tbsp freshly grated ginger 2 tbsp & 2 tsp honey 340g cabbage finely shredded 570g skinless salmon cut into 4 pieces 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper Salt and pepper

Instructions

1. Wash the quinoa under cold water in a fine strainer. Heat a saucepan over medium heat, add the quinoa, two cups of water and cook for approximately 15 minutes. 2. In a large bowl squeeze 3 tablespoons of lime juice, whisk in the oil, ginger, 2 teaspoons honey, and ¼ teaspoon of salt and pepper. Thinly slice the scallions and stir in the white and light green parts of the scallion (reserve the dark green parts), then toss with the shredded cabbage. 3. Heat the grill and line a large rimmed baking sheet with non-stick foil. Season the salmon with the cayenne pepper and ½ teaspoon salt and drizzle with the remaining 2 tablespoons honey. Grill the salmon until opaque throughout and browned on top, 5 to 7 minutes. 4. Add the quinoa to the cabbage mixture, then sprinkle with the reserved scallions. Serve alongside the salmon, with lime wedges, if desired.

Reminiscing on years past On Saturday 14 July, Triglav hosted its second annual reunion dinner for the second-generation Slovenian Australians in the refurbished Lake Bled Room. The objective of this event is to maintain the social bonds often lost between children of migrants and uphold the traditions and culture for future generations. Many of the thirty-four Slovenian Australians in attendance this year spent much of their younger years frequenting Triglav on weekends, participating in social gatherings and watching their parents play Bocce. Culture diversity is the bedrock of contemporary Australian society. Events such as these ensure the longevity of our diversity and we encourage our small but

proud Slovenian Australian community to value opportunities to connect at Triglav Mounties. The second-generation dinners provide a forum for Slovenian Australians to discuss ideas, strengthen friendships and assure future generations inherit cultural values and traditions. We offer our thanks and express our gratitude to the unwavering generosity of Mounties Group in their support of cultural events.
