Development

In order to bring you the very best hospitality venue in Sydney, it was announced that Harbord Diggers will temporarily cease trading for a period prior to the launch of our new club.

Unfortunately our Harbord Diggers building team lost 60 construction days as a result of inclement weather between January and May this year, which set back the project timeline for Stage 1 work considerably.

As a result, the Mounties Group Board has decided to temporarily close the current Harbord Diggers club from 1 November 2017 until the new club launch; expected in April/May 2018.

Closure from November this year will allow us to mitigate construction impact such as noise, dust and vibration expected from the Stage 2 demolition and excavation work that was originally planned to occur after Stage 1 works were complete. It also allows for an approximate eight month reduction on the overall construction timeline.

Harbord Diggers will remain open as usual until Tuesday 31 October, with a schedule of great events planned over the next three months (detailed within this guide).

The Diggers temporary fitness venue, Gfitness Freshwater, will trade as usual and Harbord Diggers sister venue Manly Bowling Club, just 5 kilometres away, will remain open to members and guests.

All members who have Harbord Diggers as their club of origin, will receive a 12-month extension on their Mounties Group membership to offset the disadvantage they now occur as a result of the temporary closure of Harbord Diggers.

Members will of course be able to use their membership at Manly Bowling Club during the temporary closure of Harbord Diggers, along with any of the other Mounties Group clubs. We will continue to operate our courtesy bus for members wishing to attend Manly Bowling Club, within a 5km radius of the club.

Following what was a wet start to 2017, the cooler months have treated us to some fantastic days of sunshine, allowing our builders to continue with the concreting work and formation of the Watermark Freshwater resident buildings, Explore & Develop Freshwater and the new club and hospitality precinct.

Our builders, Ganellan, currently have approximately 230 workers on site every day which doesn’t include the concrete workers who come and go.

To date, we have made extensive progress of the construction of the Watermark Freshwater buildings with the roofs on Building A, B and C now completed. We expect that the pours of the upper grounds will be completed shortly for Building D and then Building F. Another exciting milestone in July was the concrete pouring across the entire club level.

With the club being carved into the headland and commanding sea views across Curl Curl, the team were very excited to see this part of the development take place!

Other exciting developments have been the addition of two cranes now on site and the announcement that the fit out of the Watermark Freshwater apartments in both the Reynolds and Saunders Buildings commenced in mid-July.

We very much appreciate the patience of our members, neighbours and the local community while we are under construction and hope you can appreciate the plans we have in place to safely and effectively bring the new Harbord Diggers to life.

Sand resistance burns more energy

Even though we know how well High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) works, we’re always amazed at how quickly it enables people to tone up and improve their performance through our weekly classes at Freshwater Beach.

So what exactly is so effective about a HIIT workout session on the beach?

The benefit of completing a HIIT session at the beach is that you have extra resistance for many of the exercises. In one study from the Journal of Experimental Biology, walking on sand expended 2.1–2.7% more energy than on a hard surface, while running on sand uses 1.6% more energy than on a hard surface. The same principle applies for water workouts.

MOUNTIES GROUP DONATES SPORTING KIT TO STEWART HOUSE KIDS Harbord Diggers and Mounties Group are consistently looking at ways to support community initiatives and is pleased to continue a long-standing partnership with Stewart House, with a sports clothing donation drive.

Members and staff at the Group’s Sporting Sub Clubs have collected 56 cartons of sports clothes from sizes 4 – 5XL this month, which have been donated to Stewart House, a children’s centre located in close proximity to Harbord Diggers.

“We really appreciate the kind donations and ongoing support from Harbord Diggers and Mounties Group. Playing sport is a fun activity for any Aussie kid, so we are delighted to be able to provide children in need with sporting kits.”

The Diggers is a long-time supporter of the centre with a partnership which includes hosting an annual Christmas Party for 100 children from many parts of New South Wales and the ACT.

Kevin Ingram, Mounties Group President, said: “We have a variety of sports sub clubs as part of our group and this initiative is a great way of ensuring uniforms which are not being used by our sporting clubs are donated to the less fortunate members of our community.”

75 years ago, for the first time in Australia’s European history, our liberty was under threat.

And Australia was hopelessly underprepared.

In July 1942 a rampant Japanese Army landed in Papua New Guinea, then Australian territory.

The invaders were at our doorstep and the only troops standing between them and the Australian mainland were a group of young, poorly-trained, under-equipped Militia units, who had never fired a shot in anger.

The crucial battles to defend Australia were fought along a jungle path over PNG’s precipitous Owen Stanley mountain range - a path we know today as the Kokoda Track. Against all odds, the young Militia Diggers held on just long enough for our seasoned AIF veterans, rushed back from the Middle East, to join them. Together they eventually turned back and defeated the Japanese.

Best-selling author and broadcaster, Patrick Lindsay, commemorates the 75th anniversary of this remarkable story with his documentary, ‘Kokoda … the spirit lives’.

As Gallipoli symbolized the ANZAC spirit of WWI, so Kokoda is its WWII equivalent.

Today, walking the Kokoda Track has become a rite of passage to many young Australians. Others, drawn by the chance to literally walk in the footsteps of the Diggers, explore the battlefields, the terrain, the PNG people but, most of all, they explore themselves.
