OUR COMMUNITY Mounties Group is delighted to announce that we have extended our long term support of the Manly Rugby Football Club and have agreed to a further three-year major sponsorship term.

Mounties Group, in conjunction with Manly Bowling Club and Harbord Diggers has been a long term supporter of Manly Marlins, first becoming the major sponsor in 2011.

Mounties Group Chief Executive Officer, Greg Pickering, said “The Marlins are one of the most iconic sporting clubs on the Northern Beaches and the alignment between high performance and community engagement that the club delivers is very rewarding. DEVELOPMENT UPDATE WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES! It’s now been one year since major building works commenced on the new Harbord Diggers site and we are proud to report that we are still on track with all major development milestones as we work to launch a new, state of the art club for all to enjoy.

Once complete, Stage 1 building works will see the construction of the new club building featuring three restaurants, bars, cafe and member services as well as the majority of Watermark Freshwater residential living and Explore & Develop Freshwater childcare.

HARBORD DIGGERS

Here’s an overview of major events and milestones over the past year: • April 2016 – Sydney-based construction company Ganellen commences major building works on the site of the new Harbord Diggers with excavation work on the multi-storey carpark.

• April 2016 – Harbord Diggers opens its temporary club venue to the public, giving members and guests a taste of things to come with rooftop restaurant Gio, Dig Inn Café and Bar, the Diggers Local Providores and the Diggers Diner.

• August 2016 – Explore & Develop Freshwater, Harbord Diggers future childcare facility, opens registrations of interest to families on the Northern Beaches and receives an overwhelming response of families to join the wait list.

• October 2016 – The demolition phase of the old Harbord Diggers building is complete and foundation work commences as we reach the lowest point in excavation.

• November 2016 – After a comprehensive tendering process, award-winning firm Paul Kelly Design is announced as the interior architect of the new club development.

• February 2017 – Construction is well underway, with two levels of the club car parking and construction of the club level established.

• March 2017 – Building formation continues across the site, with Buildings D and E growing to club level, whilst A, B and C reach upper ground.

WHAT’S ON

More Australians were killed on the Western Front in the First World War than in any other theatre of war. The Flanders region of Belgium saw some of the bloodiest fighting of the war, including events which would eventually turn the tide in favour of the allies. With the battles at Messines, Ypres, and Passchendaele in Belgium, and at Bullecourt in France, 1917 was a pivotal turning point for Australia and the world.

This became a terrible period: over eight weeks, between September and early November, on the battlefields leading up to Passchendaele, Australia lost 38,000 men killed, wounded, or maimed. The year finally ended, much as it had begun, with the main armies bogged in the muddy trenches of France and Belgium.

Events

To Flanders Fields, 1917, looks at the third year of the Great War, which proved to be the worst Australian troops ever experienced; more troops died in battle in that year than in any other. Massive offensives were fought for moderate gains, while the scale of the killing rose to a further level of horror.

Australian troops suffered heavily in mighty battles at Bullecourt, in France, and at Messines and in the third battle of Ypres, in Belgium. In the final quarter of the year, all five Australian divisions were serving together for the first time, with some attacking side by side.
