MOUNTIES GROUP DIGS DEEP TO KEEP LOCAL LIVES SAFE ON THE NORTHERN BEACHES Living on a land girt by sea, we are a nation of water-loving beach goers. It’s a lifestyle engrained in our culture and our community – some may say it is even part of our DNA. This is certainly true in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, with our local community and incredibly strong affinity to surf and sand.

Incorporated. Together, these clubs are responsible for almost 20,000 patrol hours to keep as many as 400,000 people safe as they visit local beaches each year. As part of the Mounties Group ClubGRANTS program, Harbord Diggers donated funds to Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club and Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club for the purchase of vital surf safety equipment such as inflatable rescue boats (IRBs) and other related equipment.

Captain at Freshwater SLSC, has been a volunteer with the club for an impressive 12 years and says IRBs are an invaluable piece of equipment. IRBs are absolutely essential when conducting rescues over longer distances, rescues that are close to rocks, and rescues where multiple people need assistance at the same time, however due to the tough environment they operate in, being constantly battered by the elements, it’s important that they are replaced regularly.

“As you can imagine, in a life-or-death situation every second counts, so you need to know as a matter of certainty that the motor is going to start straight away, every time, without fail.” James Crittenden said.

“Receiving grants like this from Mounties Group Harbord Diggers is brilliant, as it frees up money to spend in other vital areas.

Unlike clubs in other states who are often subsidized by restaurants and other income streams, we live and ide by support from our community and sponsors such as Mounties Group Harbord Diggers” – Gary Fox, Queenscliff SLSC’s President.

Mounties Group are proud to support Freshwater SLSC and Queenscliff SLSC in helping our members and locals water-loving beach goers to enjoy life and keeping their lives safe on the Northern Beaches.

Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club used their grant funds to purchase a hull of a new IRB which is currently being custom-built and is due for delivery in June 2021. The new IRB will be used in training during the winter months to hone the skills of their surf life savers in preparation for the coming busy summer months.

Over the winter months, the new IRB is vital for Queenscliff SLSC training program, which consists of both training and development as well as IRB racing. Particularly IRB racing provide their crew with the opportunity to fine tune their skills such as speed to water and various search and rescue techniques.

Jayson Elkins, head of the IRB Racing Crew and IRB Training program at Queenscliff SLSC had experienced first-hand the subtle changes with the introduction of each new IRB that make a world of difference during rescues.

“IRBs are an essential piece of life saving equipment, they give us the ability to navigate through varied surf conditions quickly so we can get to people who need help” Jayson Elkins said.

WHY YOU SHOULD GIVE “FLOATIES” THE FLICK Teaching a child to swim with a floatation aid can give both the parents and the child a false sense of security.

However, that’s not the only reason experts say that when teaching, you should give floaties the flick.

Tragically in Australia 84% of drownings amongst children aged 0-4 are caused by falling into water. If your child falls into water, the chances are they will not be wearing a flotation aid.

I have been fortunate to enjoy an active lifestyle growing up on the Northern Beaches with family and friends who incorporate healthy eating and exercise into daily life.

Therefore, I appreciate the importance of nutrition and fueling your body for activity, long-term health, optimal energy levels, brain function and feeling your best. This led me to study to become an Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD).

Do you have any special interest areas?

Yes, Paediatrics, Disordered Eating & Eating Disorders and Infant and Women’s Health.

Tell us a little more about yourself and your work?

Over my career I have worked extensively in the acute care setting working with paediatrics to geriatrics with both acute and chronic complex conditions. Interest areas that I have dedicated expanding my knowledge to are infant and children’s health, disordered eating, eating disorders, and I enjoy helping those balancing busy working and family lives.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love meeting new people everyday. I enjoy getting to know the individual person as a whole, including their background and values in their day-to-day lives. I love seeing the positive change that a healthy diet and lifestyle can add to someone’s life.

For the past 18 months, we have been quietly researching our members and local community. By doing it over this period of time and without promoting what we were doing, we were able to make sure everyone had their say and we received details that were not influenced by one group over another.

When asked, what you would like to see Mounties be in the future for you to enjoy it the most? Members said they want an indoor location that families can enjoy, great food offerings, a location to dance and more live music and lounge spaces that don’t feel disconnected from the rest of the club.

Outside the Club environment, our members said they want to feel safe and secure, they want help with their health and medical needs, they want opportunities to escape the daily stress of life and they want education to improve the futures of themselves and their children.

Mounties Care is steadfast in its mission to have a positive impact on the lives of our members. We want to make sure you feel 36

supported and can reach out for assistance at any time.

Our Care Navigation service gives you the opportunity to talk to a specialist about any healthcare related concern you have whether it be medication advice, help to understand the Aged Care system, coordination of home care services, to advocate for your rights or to provide guidance through medical diagnoses or treatment options.

Advice may be as simple as finding the right allied health professional for back pain, through to help to assess government subsidised home care packages to relieve you or a carer from these stresses.

Our Care Navigation services are provided by our partners at Vitalis who have years of clinical experience at leading hospitals and who specialise in individualised care. This means your unique situation is heard and responded to.
