THA N K YOU With just two months since we opened the doors of the new Harbord Diggers, we want to say thank you. Thank you to the thousands and thousands of people who have visited us. Thank you to those who have joined us as new members and to those who have renewed. Thank you to our long-standing loyal members who have embraced or adapted to the changes at their beloved Harbord Diggers. Thank you to the walkers, the riders, the dog owners, yoga-lovers and the early risers for enjoying your coffee or breakfast with us. Thank you to the families; the mums, dads, aunties, uncles, sisters, brothers and grandparents for celebrating your special family moments with us. To put it quite simply, the response from members and visitors within our community, as well as the media and club industry in support of the new Harbord Diggers since launching has been overwhelming and heartwarming.
It was always going to be a difficult task launching a world-first intergenerational venue comprising of a thriving club with bars, restaurants, café and entertainment, whilst also opening a new childcare centre and seniors living. We have thoroughly loved hosting you at the new Diggers and seeing you enjoy your time with us. As members, you are part of our Diggers family, and as such, we always want you to be involved in your new venue. That’s why we have genuinely asked you for your feedback. We want to take on board what you’ve told us and we have subsequently introduced significant improvements and additions as a result. With the launch of Stage 1 complete, we are excited to tell you that there is still so much more to come, with progressive rollouts of new areas starting in the coming months. We look forward to seeing you soon at the new Harbord Diggers.

In our first two months, we launched the new Harbord Diggers with headline performances by Hoodoo Gurus and Hey Duggee – which filled our venue to its capacity.

Manly Warringah Touch Association play an active role in the local community. The Association provides social touch football competitions for all ages and abilities and a pathway to support rising talent via representative teams. With over 4,000 participants, the Association is an integral part of fostering healthy lifestyles in both junior and senior levels.
Manly Touch President Ian Kalms said, “We are really excited about the prospect of connecting and engaging with the local community in a new and dynamic way through this partnership. Manly Touch is, and always will be, a community-based family club and we see a real synergy between our two organisations who both share a community focus.”
“When speaking with the team at Manly Warringah Touch Association, it was obvious that there were many core values and similarities shared by our two organisations and the communities in which we operate and support,” explained Greg Pickering, Group Chief Executive Officer for Mounties Group.
“It is a tremendous boost to our Club as we head into the representative season and with registrations commencing for our local junior and summer competitions,” Ian added. Good luck to all junior and senior players kicking off the new season in September.

We also wanted to combine our love of seafood as well,” explained Gabby. ACQUAFRESCA BY PILU Giovanni Pilu, Italian chef and owner of Pilu at Freshwater brings his enthusiasm and passion for the unique flavours of his homeland Sardinia to his new venture at Harbord Diggers. Set in a prime elevated corner of the Diggers adorned with stone archways, hints of colours from Italy and bi-fold doors that open to alfresco seating; dining at AcquaFresca by Pilu gives a feeling as though you are holidaying on the Italian coast. The causal spin-off of award winning Pilu is described as a relaxed Italian trattoria that welcomes the entire family. “You can pop in here for some polenta and meatballs, pizza or pasta. There is also Italian beer on tap, veal cutlet on the bone with a crumb made from Sardinian bread and all served with Italian ‘slaw and roast potatoes,” said Giovanni. The relaxed menu champions simple, fresh and authentic Italian dining. “We are importing the wholemeal flour for the pizzas from Sardinia, made on dough proved inhouse for 48 hours. The gelato, which we’re making with a local patisserie, uses pastes from Sicily,” he added.

One hundred years ago six Diggers returned from the poppy fields of France, and later sat on Freshwater Beach and discussed creating a place where they could remember their mates, join those who protected Australian shores and support each other and the community they live in. This was the genesis of Harbord Diggers and the original Diggers are now honoured by the six poppies in a memorial artwork by artist Jade Oakley, proudly on display at our main entry. Each poppy is balanced on a hidden hook, so that when the southerly blows in off the sea the sculptures bob and dance like poppies in a field. The flickering light of the concealed flames within each poppy are a reminder of the eternal flame, and the poppies appear to ‘grow’ from a reflective pool lined with dark granite below.
The ANZAC spirit is represented by the words ‘Courage, Sacrifice, Endurance and Mateship’ that are carved in black stone and joined to the wet edge of the pool.
The glowing perforated brass background represents the sea and the sand of Freshwater Beach.
As we approach the centenary of Armstice Day, and each day moving forward, we will remember them.
