WELCOME A FESTIVE MESSAGE A very warm welcome to our current Mounties Group members and our newest members to the Mounties family. I would like to wish every one of you a very Merry Christmas this festive season, and to encourage you all to look ahead to an optimistic new year.
2020 has been one of the toughest years our community has endured. We are currently witnessing a world-wide pandemic unfold, which has impacted us all in ways we could never imagine. I know it’s given myself and my team a chance to reflect on just how lucky we are; to live in a country such as ours and to be linked to an incredibly vibrant, resilient community who care deeply about each other. We have seen each other through some tough times this year, and I am profoundly humbled and touched to have witnessed the kindness and compassion you all have shared in these challenging times. It is these moments like these that I am truly proud to be part of Mounties Group, of our achievements this year and how we have also overcome unimaginable obstacles. I look forward to 2021 and to continue our ongoing work towards creating a significant positive impact on our community.
In the spirit over the holidays, I encourage everyone to do what you can to support each other any way you can. DESPITE A CHALLENGING YEAR, MOUNTIES GROUP PLEDGES ALMOST $360,000 TO WORTHY CAUSES Despite the challenges of 2020 with the Coronavirus pandemic and many clubs not contributing this year, Mounties Group has pledged almost $360,000 to local community groups via Category 1 ClubGRANTS.

Mounties Groups clubs – Mounties, Triglav, Mekong and Harbord Diggers. Two beneficiaries include The Humour Foundation and Miracle Babies Foundation who have both received funding to support their valued programs. The Humour Foundation received $12,000 to support its Clown Doctor initiative that offers entertainment, humour and play as a means of making hospitals a less lonely place for children. Clown Doctors bring ‘doses’ of fun and laughter to the child’s bedside through improvised engagements, jokes and magic.
With a commitment to supporting the local community, Mounties Group has allocated $359,470 to 20 worthy projects including those that support youth, families, seniors, children and vulnerable members of our community.
“The ClubGRANTS funding from Mounties Group will directly contribute to the ongoing delivery of our Clown Doctors program at NSW’s largest children’s specialist hospital – The Children’s Hospital at Westmead,” said the Humour Foundation.
This year’s grant recipients provide a range of community services to the Liverpool, Fairfield and Northern Beaches communities with grants funded from

hospital staff just at Westmead but there are over 20 hospitals they visit around the country,” she/he added. Receiving another $12,000 grant, the Miracle Babies Foundation will use its funding to continue supporting families with a baby born premature or sick. “We are very excited to receive this funding from Mounties Group to contribute to developing and providing vital programs and resources to support families who need our support and programs,” explained Miracle Babies Foundation. “Having the support of organisations such as Mounties Group allows us to support and enhance a family’s experience from a threatened pregnancy, hospital journey with a premature or sick newborn, or with the transition to home and beyond after a long special care journey.” Mounties Group president, Kevin Ingram was thrilled that despite the challenges of 2020 and a closure of clubs earlier in the year, the Group can still support such worthy causes.
“With the Coronavirus threat shutting down clubs for a period of time recently, it’s been tough for local clubs, who act as sponsors of many sporting and community bodies and organisations, to show their support,” said Mr Ingram. “While many other clubs have understandably chosen not to participate in Category 1 ClubGRANTS this year, Mounties Group wanted to do their bit to ensure that these worthy causes that rely on our support can still receive a contribution. “The ClubGRANTS funding forms part of the $6 million we have given in the last financial year which comes from the ClubGRANTS scheme, community cash contributions, charity donations and local sporting sponsorships.” “These ClubGRANTS are just one of the many ways Mounties Group is proactive in providing support, services and facilities for the betterment of our local community,” he concluded.

It is a family run eatery using safely guarded recipes which are traced back to the childhood of Vietnamese migrant and head chef/owner, Bac Cang. Inspiration for the menu comes from Vietnam’s vibrant food culture, with emphasis on the use of fresh locally sourced produce and in season ingredients. Learning to swim can save your child’s life. Learning to do it well leads to a lifetime love of the water. But how do you tell the difference between great and average swimming lessons?
Are your teachers well trained and accredited?
Carlile Swimming pioneered teaching babies in Australia, opened Sydney’s first indoor learn to swim centre and has long been regarded as one of the world’s leading swim schools. With summer upon us it’s time to get your children back in the water, ready to enjoy the beach and head back to their school carnival in great shape.
What is your child protection code of conduct?
If you are looking for great lessons, below are some questions to ask a potential swim school, based on Carlile’s 65 years leading the industry. 32

Your teacher should be accredited by a nationally recognised organisation such as Swim Australia.
Your swim school should be able to provide you with their child protection policy and ensure the right practices are always followed. Do you use flotation aides, such as bubbles and floaties? Tragically in Australia 84% of drownings amongst children aged 0-4 are caused by falling into water. If your child falls into water, the chances are they will not be wearing a flotation aid.
How many students are in a class? The numbers should vary. Learning to swim requires more individual attention than stroke correction. A teacher’s ability to keep children engaged is just as important as the teacher to child ratio. Why is good technique important? Swimming with an efficient technique means a child can swim longer without tiring. Good technique can save a life. How far will my child swim? Further is NOT necessarily better. Shorter distances, with more opportunities for stroke correction and less chance to lose concentration or tire, develops better swimmers.
When will my child have learnt to swim? If your child can comfortably swim 400 metres of freestyle with good, efficient technique and a balance of other strokes, then they can swim well. Learn to Swim In 2019, we partnered with Carlile Swimming Freshwater, when they opened their doors as part of the Harbord Diggers Precinct, to offer the children & families of our service with a unique opportunity to engage in weekly swimming lessons. Each week our team of educators coordinate 8 learn to swim sessions. The team at Carlile assess the abilities of each child within our sessions to meet the individual needs of the child and their swimming abilities, whilst supporting them in engaging in lessons alongside their peer groups which provides them a sense of belonging. P R E PA R AT I O N I S KEY TO H E A LT H Y A G E I N G We plan our careers; we budget and save to buy a house, plan to expand our families, and for our children’s education, but how much do we plan for our senior years? Stories that have emerged from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality & Safety show a system of failure and neglect. We have learned that there are more than 100,000 people waiting for an approved home care package; packages that support people to live independently in the home for a long as possible. However, when the Department of Health figures show almost 28,000 people have died while on the waitlist in the past two years1 it is cause for concern. The best way to prepare for ageing is to understand the risk factors for disability and dependency as we move into the later years, understand funding models available to us, and to register early if funding is available. When we identify risks that are modifiable, we can actively take steps to improve. We know as we age bone density decreases, so strengthening exercises become more important. Falls are one of the most common incidents that land our older population in hospital, and that’s where falls prevention courses become important. 44
