FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Friends, When the Visitation Nuns established Mount de Sales Academy in 1852, they laid their foundation in faith, keeping faith in Christ central to everything they did. I wonder if they imagined the incredible community of students, alumnae, parents, grandparents, trustees, and friends who would build on that foundation for 165 years. Today we have the honor of continuing their legacy.

Our students and alumnae are the living testament to this legacy. It’s edifying, and I am grateful each day when I see our young women realize potential they never knew they had. I am further amazed by the generosity of our community as they work together to make these stories possible.

In the last year, a record number of volunteers helped with everything from building maintenance to coordinating beautiful events to make our students’ time here truly special.

We received the blessing of dozens of commitments to pray specifically for the intentions of Mount de Sales Academy. We surpassed our annual giving goal, increasing our financial supporters by over ten percent. Also, I worked with the Board of Trustees along with MDSA community leaders as they came together to complete a successful feasibility study for a capital campaign to renovate the fourth floor B side and construct a new building for performing arts and student life activities.

Mount de Sales Academy reaches her potential by supporting and guiding girls to reach theirs. Thank you for sharing in this remarkable work. I look forward to the exciting new things happening at MDSA, confident in our foundation and hopeful for the potential we have yet to discover.

On January 26, Mount de Sales Academy Campus Ministry hosted the annual iPray for Life vigil and rally.

Congressman Andy Harris P’14, physician and father, spoke persuasively on the dignity of women and their right to better health care. Then, with chapel lights dimmed and the candles around the Blessed Sacrament glowing, student pro-life leaders joined with more than 250 voices and softly prayed. Kneeling next to these faithful young women, one couldn’t help but wonder, might this be the generation that offers women the love and support needed to finally end abortion?

The next day, after returning home for just a few hours of sleep, MDSA students, faculty, and parents drove to Washington, D.C., for the March for Life, ready to put their prayers into action. Senior Lily Gretz describes climbing the hill just below the Supreme Court and looking back at all the people. “It felt really good,” she recalls, “to be a part of something that big.” For Lily,

the sensitive issue of abortion has taken a few years to grapple with. However, throughout her time at Mount de Sales, Lily has arrived at a deep conviction of the beauty of life which, she says, requires “giving every woman a chance, even the unborn.”

Lily’s confidence in her ability to advocate for the less fortunate offers a glimpse into the poise and empathy shared by so many of the young women of Mount de Sales Academy. They are shown and taught daily the powerful influence of feminine strength dedicated to the service of others, a reality that Saint John Paul II discussed in his Apostolic Letter On the Dignity and Vocation of Women. In the closing message of the Second Vatican Council, the Pontiff states: “At this moment when the human race is undergoing so deep a transformation, women imbued with a spirit of the Gospel can do so much to aid humanity in not falling.”

On Saturday, February 25, Sailor moms took a step away from their busy weeks to reflect upon The Family as an Icon of the Trinity. The retreat talks were given by Sr. Mary Michael, O.P., and focused on the writings of Pope Francis as both a renewal and an encouragement to live vibrantly the beautiful vocation to marriage and family life. Blessed with spring-like weather and an idyllic location, the retreatants also spent time in Adoration, walking the grounds, reading, and simply catching up with friends over a cup of coffee at the beautifully renovated St. Gabriel’s Retreat Center, run by the All Saints Sisters of Catonsville.

“As Catholic Schools Week kicked off, we were blessed to have Archbishop William Lori visit and celebrate Mass with us. In his homily he encouraged us to stay focused on Christ as the center of our life. This week represents more than just a celebration of Catholic schools and Catholic education; it is a week that declares that we recognize the need for a Christ-centered approach to life all around in our education, athletics, relationships and prayer. Archbishop Lori’s words encourage us and lead us forward in the mission of living for Christ.”

The Mount de Sales winter musical, Beauty and the Beast, was a recordbreaking performance!

More than 100 students participated in the cast, crew, and pit band, performing to sellout crowds the weekend of February 3 through 5 at the Mount Saint Joseph (MSJ) Fine Arts Center. Nearly 2,000 patrons were treated to an incredible production, complete with showstopping musical numbers, hilarious characters, and the beautiful theme that “beauty is found within.”

Cast rehearsals began with Director Rosie Bacon at Mount de Sales in October. Students danced their way among the instruments and sets in the refectory, which houses both music and theatre classes.

Magical utensils, plates, and sets were created by Technical Director Kelly Cardall’s ‘93 Speech and Performance class; Maurice’s invention was built through the vision of Emma Jendrek ‘18; and the Beast’s face took shape under the capable hands of Jenni Kelleher ’17.

Jeff Hosier, MDSA music teacher and pit band director, constructed a 24-foot platform which provided the anchor for the set. As the cast descended upon MSJ in January, parents and crew painted, hammered, glued, and glittered. Castle gates and a beautiful backdrop were brought in, as well as amazing costumes. Stained glass windows and an enchanted rose established the forbidden West Wing, and the final fight scene was rehearsed daily.

Putting on the production always creates a close atmosphere. This year, however, there were EIGHT sets of actual siblings in the show!

The Aldaves, Balicks, Boegels, Hartmans, Hurleys, Hydes, Kirbys, and Brotzmans all had two children participating. The production team is very grateful for all of the families who shared the talent and time of their children in the musical!

The level of professionalism for this show far exceeded a typical high school production, and audiences expressed their appreciation with standing ovations. The Cappies, a student critic group, attended the Saturday matinée and wrote raving reviews: “From epic group numbers to hilarious one-liners, Beauty and the Beast at MDSA was a sight to see.” The castle inhabitants, led by Lumiere the Candelabra, Connor Hurley MSJ ‘17, and Mrs. Potts, Rebekah Balick ‘18, gave outstanding vocal performances. Emma Romeo ’18 shined in the lead role of Belle, embodying the Disney princess beautifully, and, despite the unwelcome courtship of Gaston, portrayed expertly by Michael Stromberg MSJ ’17, she eventually finds the beauty within the Beast, Alex Scott MSJ ’17.

The Directors would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported the production. We look forward to the day when we can host the show in our own Center for Performing Arts and Student Life!

ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHT Kristin Steranka ‘11

If someone had asked me while I was a student at Mount de Sales about my plans for a future career, I would have told them I had no clue. I knew I wanted to do something that challenged me, but I had no idea what that was. Math and science were always strong subjects for me, so when I talked to Math Teacher Mr. Posner about engineering, he encouraged me to look into it. When I explored the engineering field, Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, (UMD) piqued my interest.

I never thought I would find a career in engineering and grow to actually love it. Mount de Sales taught me how to persevere through the day to day and keep my head up in the tough classes.

My teachers always

challenged their students to focus on the end goal and look at the big picture.

Sometimes the Advanced Placement classes were more than difficult, and staying up late to finish homework tested my academic abilities. However, those forward-thinking lessons I learned at Mount de Sales carried me through college. I was able to soar through my basic engineering courses and fully appreciate the more advanced and fun fire protection courses.

Far beyond the technical lessons I learned at Mount de Sales, the strength of my faith has had the most lasting impact on my life. Transitioning from a small Catholic school to a large public university had its challenges; nevertheless, the foundation of the Catholic faith fostered at Mount de Sales allowed me to move forward in confidence. I was able to have constructive conversations with others who disagreed with my viewpoints. My time in college reinforced the groundwork Mount de Sales laid in my faith life.

After I graduated from UMD in 2015, I began working at Koffel Associates, Inc. as a fire protection engineer. Since then, I have been able to engage the STEM class students at Mount de Sales in the Fire Protection Engineering Design Challenge at the University of Maryland.

We’ve covered the five main principles of fire protection, and the girls are actually building a scaled room equipped with an alarm system that will be tested at the University of Maryland fire laboratory… literally trial by fire!

To this day, I still wear my Mount de Sales ring and keep in touch with girls from my class. Mount de Sales is like a family. It doesn’t matter where you go or how long you are gone, it will always be there. To me, this is a very comforting thought.

News KELLY HEACOCK ‘03 married Brandon Yost on June 4, 2016, at Holy Cross Church in Federal Hill followed by a waterfront reception at Tabrizi’s.

Bridesmaids included Meghan Neville ‘03, Lindsay Smith Scully ‘03, and Mary Hisky ‘03. Other Mount de Sales alumnae in attendance were Stacy Bridge Morsberger ‘03, Meghan Nugent Getz ‘03, Julie Trimble Marques ‘03, and Caitlin Flanagan House ‘03. After honeymooning in Antigua, Kelly and Brandon currently reside in Annapolis, MD.

On April 23, 2016, BLAKELEY COLLINS KOROL ’07 married Daniel Korol. The ceremony was held at Georgetown Prep High School, and the reception was at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Her sister, Katie Collins ‘05, and friend, Brittany Floto Gallagher ’07, were in the wedding party. Blakeley is currently a special education teacher in the Washington, D.C., area.

Lena Michele Rhinehart was born to RACHEL ALLEN RHINEHART ‘05 and husband Nick on November 30, 2016, in Frederick, MD. She was recently baptized at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Frederick.

Returning to Mount de Sales, COLLEEN BOLAND ’05 married Daniel Tojo Pérez in the Chapel of St. Francis de Sales on Saturday, August 20. Her sister, Bridget Mary Boland ’12, was her maid of honor, and classmates Maureen Rogers Baro ’05 and Sarah Huggins ’05 were bridesmaids. Danny and Colleen currently live in Spain.

BRITTANY JACOBS ‘06 recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 2016 with her doctorate in cell and molecular biology after completing her bachelor’s in kinesiology from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is currently a biologist with the EPA’s Office of Water as a Presidential Management Fellow.

After receiving her degree in marketing from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at University of Maryland, KATHLEEN PALMER HYRKAS ’09 has been very busy! She handled the marketing for a roofing company for a year before she decided to start her own firm called InStreamOne, which is a full-service digital marketing company that helps the home service industry. Katie currently serves as CEO and Partner of InStreamOne. She married Andrew Hyrkas in May of 2016.

JENNIFER PUMPHREY ’12 graduated from University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. She accepted a job at Joshi & Merchant, M.D., P.A., and is currently working under psychiatrists and social workers while pursuing a master’s degree in social work from Salisbury University.

VICTORIA CHESTER ’12 graduated from Towson University magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in social sciences with a minor in family and human services. She landed a fulltime job shortly after graduation as a recruiter for Symphony Placements, a staffing agency in Cockeysville, MD. She finds that the work ethic instilled in her at MDSA has stayed with her over the years. Victoria says, “It is always great when I interview a candidate who went to a Catholic school in Baltimore County because it gives us a great topic to discuss before starting the interview.”

FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Community of Mount de Sales Academy, I am excited to share with you my first update as President of the Board of Trustees. Since my election to this position in July, we have undertaken a capital campaign feasibility study for expansion of our campus facilities to include renovation of the fourth floor B side and a new building. This study showed favorable attitudinal support and the potential ability to raise $5 million for this endeavor.

Simultaneously, the Board of Trustees has sought significant input from our community on the needs of Mount de Sales Academy and run various financial models analyzing budgetary and tuition impact. After great consideration, the Board of Trustees voted to move forward with a $10 million expansion project that will be funded through a $5 million capital campaign, $1.8 million in existing resources from a previous Fine Arts Campaign, and potential financing up to $4 million. Now we enter the planning and organization phase of the campaign.

The Institute for School and Parish Development, the consulting firm that conducted the feasibility study, has been retained as campaign consultant with Frank Donaldson, president, serving as the advisor to Mount de Sales Academy. A critical component of our success will be engaging energetic volunteer leadership to serve as ambassadors for the campaign. It is my pleasure to announce the capital campaign Operational Chairs (please see below).

After thorough and detailed organization and planning, the Advancement Team, Executive Committee, and campaign leadership will launch the silent phase, which is the beginning of the campaign. We will continue to provide updates on our progress and capital projects.

The Gate House renovation is underway and will be completed by the end of the summer. This project, which was funded from budgetary reserves and did not require philanthropic support, will enable the Business Office and Sailor Shop to move to the Gate House for the 2017-2018 school year.

This will immediately impact students by allowing cafeteria expansion to include the current Sailor Shop space. Further renovation will be done on the expanded cafeteria for the 2018-2019 school year. Additionally, and most significantly, this summer we will also begin work on the fourth floor B side renovation. As a two-summer project, work needs to begin right away in order for the students to reap the benefits of the expansion as soon as possible. Throughout the campaign, you will be asked to consider what role you can play in the future of Mount de Sales Academy. You can begin to support our efforts right away by keeping the success of MDSA and our efforts for the students in your prayers. On March 8, benefactors and student recipients gathered to celebrate the impact of scholarship at Mount de Sales Academy. As you may have read in previous issues, we have been blessed by new benefactorfunded scholarships that directly support the mission of our school. At the breakfast, Sister Mary Thomas shared, “When you partner with God, the fruits of that partnership can be surprising and one hundredfold. It’s the story of investing in the potential of human life, and the returns are like no other.”

The newest scholarship offered is the Alice Marie Falter ’60 Scholarship. When Mrs. Falter passed away, her family asked for donations to be sent to MDSA in lieu of flowers. The tremendous outpouring of support from memorial gifts and friends and family who have continued to give in memory of Alice Marie enabled us to award the very first Alice Marie Falter ‘60 Scholarship to Cassidy Burdette ’21 for the 2017-2018 school year.

Cassidy Burdette ‘21, and her mother, Amy Burdette ’90 P’21, attended the breakfast, and Amy gave her personal testimony on the life-changing gift of the scholarship. As a single parent, it would have been impossible to afford tuition without financial assistance. Upon acceptance to MDSA with the scholarship award, their family’s dream of Cassidy being a Sailor was realized. Amy shares, “Alice received a great education of her heart here at Mount de Sales, and I believe the education of my heart is what kept me connected to the school. Now it is Cassidy’s turn. To Mr. Falter, Debbie, Frank, the rest of the Falter family, and to everyone who contributed to this fund, Cassidy and I are extremely thankful for the gift of this scholarship, and we are truly honored to help carry on Alice’s legacy here at Mount de Sales.”

Our charitable community gives in many ways to preserve and further Mount de Sales Academy. On the evening of January 21, we gave especial thanks to our benefactors whose generosity is integral in providing the best for our students.

Mass was celebrated by Reverend Scharbach in the Chapel of St. Francis de Sales, followed by a cocktail hour. After a performance by the Concert Choir, Emma Romeo ‘18 spoke eloquently of how her Mount

de Sales experience has transformed her life, and she thanked those gathered for making it possible.

Our guests enjoyed a sumptuous Maryland-themed dinner culminating with Smith Island cake for dessert, catered by Chef Gary Beach. We give thanks to all those who support Mount de Sales Academy, for, as St. Francis de Sales reminds us, “There is nothing small in the service of God.”
