ABOUT THE COVER Oh my gosh, this shoot was so fun! I knew that a really tall stack of sweets would look best, given the dimensions of the cover — but we make so many different things, it was hard to decide which to include.

A leaning tower of truffles?

A super-tall ice cream cone? A gigantic slice of chocolate cake?

Finally it came to us: Everything à la mode!

We started stacking pastries, Brett Wyatt scooped the ice cream and placed it on top with the precision of a neurosurgeon, Jael Rattigen grabbed a bottle of chocolate sauce and started drizzling. Curious customers and staff gathered round, and the pressure was on to get the perfect shot before the ice cream melted.

The photo on the cover was taken mere seconds before the stack collapsed under the weight of its own decadence. Unlike a lot of styled food photography, where the food is either fake or has been manipulated to the point of inedibility, every single item in the photo was taken directly from French Broad Chocolate Lounge’s cases — and in keeping with our company policy of sustainability, it was all eaten shortly thereafter!

Asheville hasn’t always been a foodie city. Plenty of locals remember a time not that long ago when downtown was mostly boarded-up buildings with nary a James Beard-nominated chef or craft brewery in sight.

Now, of course, it seems that hardly a week goes by that an Asheville eatery, brewery or bar doesn’t make some Top 10 list or get featured in a national publication like Bon Apétit, Saveur or The New York Times.

And the boom doesn’t seem to be anywhere near over. As the local dining, beer, coffee and bar industries continue to expand, related businesses grow as well.

Western North Carolina now boasts organized winery tours by both train and bus, which invite guests to literally get a taste of what dozens of area vintners are producing. More and more local farmers, whom you can meet in person at the wealth of area tailgate markets, are experimenting with diverse crops and products such as hops, mushrooms, lamb and truffles to supply Asheville’s brewers and chefs. And the region’s artisan cheese industry now supports its own successful annual festival — the Carolina Mountain Cheese Fest.

So, no matter your tastes, you’ll find something worth exploring in Asheville. Enjoy!

Asheville is well-known for its thriving homegrown craft brewery industry.

Even so, three major craft breweries from other states have chosen Western North Carolina for their East Coast expansions: Oskar Blues makes its second home in Brevard, Sierra Nevada has set up shop in Mills River and New Belgium has a production facility and recently opened its Liquid Center taproom in Asheville’s River Arts District.

BEER VACATION ASHEVILLE IS BECOMING A BEER TOURISM CENTER

BY TANYA BIRCH Asheville has been a tourist destination for many years, where attractions such as the Biltmore Estate and outdoor recreation sites have been the primary reasons to visit. Craft beer was originally a secondary reason, an added bonus. Now, however, the local beer scene is often acknowledged as a key reason some visitors plan a trip to Asheville: • According to a Condé Nast Traveler 2016 piece, “Where to Find the Best Beer in the World,” Asheville was recognized among other distinguished beer cities such as Munich, Germany, and Brussels, Belgium. The Funkatorium and Burial Beer Co., as well as the Bruisin’ Ales beer store, were highlighted.

• Asheville was honored in a 2016 Matador Network post as one of 17 of the world’s best cities for craft beer. The author noted, “Asheville’s beer scene has been solidly rooted with Highland Brewing, Green Man, Catawba and Asheville Pizza and Brewing” and mentioned the Wedge Brewing Co. as a personal favorite.

• A January 2016 Wall Street Journal article on the trend of using foraged items in brewing beer highlighted Morganton’s Fonta Flora Brewery.

In the midst of this national media attention, new breweries are opening and existing businesses are expanding and planning for growth: • Highland Brewing Co., Hi-Wire Brewing and Green Man Brewery have all recently expanded their taproom and production facilities, with others such as Burial Beer Co., Fonta Flora Brewery and Wicked Weed Brewing in planning stages for future expansions.

• As of May 2016, the New Belgium Brewing Co. Liquid Center taproom in the River Arts District is open for business.

• Bhramari Brewhouse opened in early 2016 with a full restaurant at the edge of the South Slope brewery mecca.

• South of Asheville in Mills River, the brewery scene has expanded with the 2016 opening of brewpub Mills River Brewery near Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. • Other new breweries that are now part of Western North Carolina’s booming beer community include Sweeten Creek Brewery on Sweeten Creek Road, Habitat Tavern and Commons on Broadway downtown, Blue Ghost Brewing Co. in Fletcher, Zebulon Artisan Ales in Weaverville and Sanctuary Brewing Co. and Basic Brewery in Hendersonville.

• With locations in West and South Asheville, Biscuit Head has a tagline of “Put some South in your mouth,” and they’re not kidding. Is there anything more Southern than biscuits and gravy? Likely not. Here, hungry diners will find more than just the traditional gravies. Some out-of-the-box ones include sweet potato coconut and smoked tomato Creole.

• Avenue M is in the heart of North Asheville. Its diverse brunch menu caters to just about any appetite. The owners welcome you to enjoy the fresh mountain air from the comfort of their spacious, dog-friendly porch or casual dining room. It’s a real neighborhood place where the locals eat, drink and gather.

• Tucked away in a beautiful, Victorian turn-of-the-century home on a brick-lined street in Biltmore Village, Corner Kitchen, serves up “Southern cuisine with an urban twist.” Voted one of OpenTable’s 100 Best Brunch Restaurants in the U.S. for 2016, it’s a popular spot for locals and visitors alike — including President and first lady Obama, who ate dinner there in 2010.

• In the heart of downtown, Over Easy Cafe takes its eggs seriously. Its menu changes with the seasons, and the owners proudly use only organic eggs and meat.

• Located inside the LEED-certified Hilton in Biltmore Park Town Square, Roux has an upscale yet comfortable environment. Its brunch menu fuses Southern comfort with modern sophistication.

Sit back and enjoy a bubbly mimosa or savor a Bloody Mary.

• The Moose Café, located at the big Western North Carolina Farmers Market, is a great place to stop before browsing the market and meeting local farmers. This is the place for that big ’ole country breakfast that includes huge scratch-made pancakes, liver mush and, of course, that Southern staple — grits. Don’t forget to try the apple butter.

• If breakfast tacos are more your thing, TacoBilly in West Asheville serves several variations on that theme along with aguas frescas and other offerings. Owners Beth and Hunter Berry grew up in Austin, Texas — ground zero for breakfast tacos — and picked up a few culinary tricks during years spent living in southern Mexico.

• Sip your beverage in unique surroundings. Enjoy a coffee and doughnut while sitting at a table built into the back of the Hole doughnut and coffee truck stationed on Haywood Road next to the brick-and-mortar store; sit on the second floor of a double-decker London bus-turned-café at Double D’s Coffee and Desserts downtown or experience the day-to-night transformation at Filo Pastries/Post 70 — coffee shop by day, Mediterranean tapas and cocktail bar by night.

• Explore some of the Best of WNC award-winning shops, like a sampling of the best all-around coffeehouse winners, including High Five Coffee, BattleCat Coffee Bar and Odd’s Café.

• Relax in a spot tapped by Xpress readers in Best of WNC polls as the best teahouse in which to read a book: Dobra Tea. Asheville residents often associate Dobra with the city’s tea culture, and for good reason. Dobra has three locations in the Asheville area and an 80-page tea menu complete with an instructional guide.

• Check out Trade and Lore, which opened in March 2016 on Wall Street with the “goal of creating a community hub that supports local nonprofit agencies and focuses as much on social justice as it does on excellent coffee,” as highlighted in a previous Mountain Xpress article by Gina Smith.

• Established spots like PennyCup Coffee and Izzy’s Coffee

Den have expanded their operations in recent months.

PennyCup is maintaining its original roasting operations and tasting room at 362 Depot St. in the River Arts District and has opened a café downtown at 39 S. Market St. The owners of Izzy’s on Lexington Avenue have opened another shop in West Asheville on Haywood Road in the former location of Waking Life Espresso.

• Coffee enthusiasts can coffee-hop in downtown Asheville.

There are options such as Malaprop’s Bookstore and Café, mentioned in a 2015 New York Times article written on the Asheville travel scene. Or venture into other spots such as Green Sage Café, Bomba, French Broad Chocolate Lounge or World Coffee Café.

HIDDEN GEMS ASHEVILLE’S LOW-PROFILE TREASURES

BY JONATHAN AMMONS Asheville’s food scene gets a lot of attention, with celebrity chefs and restaurants being touted constantly in local, regional and national media. But there are a few spots in town that are tucked just out of sight and could be easy to pass by — hidden places with a lot more promise than press. Here are some of those gems: • In the heart of downtown, it could be easy to miss the plantladen windows of the tiny Rosetta’s Buchi Bar. Specializing in vegetarian and vegan cuisine, and serving up Asheville’s own Buchi Kombucha. They even make kombucha-based mixed drinks and cocktails! In fact, the Buchi Bar won the Best of WNC 2015 poll for the most unique nonalcoholic drink menu.

• Another great veg-centric bar not to miss is Asheville’s first selflabeled “social justice bar,” The Block Off Biltmore. With vegan pop-up dinners, house-made drinks and a variety of local and craft-made beers, it’s a good spot to see what’s bubbling under the surface of local social issues or to inadvertently wind up at a fundraiser supporting anything from a local animal shelter to a neighbor in need.

• Down in the River Arts District, Ole Shakey’s Getaway has been an ever-changing dive bar down by the river for years.

With cheap hooch, daily specials, a jukebox, yard games and a picture-perfect view of the French Broad River, it’s hard not to love Shakey’s.

• Up the hill in West Asheville is Oyster House Brewing Co. The tiny brewery and restaurant serves up happy-hour oyster specials, house-made beers and more. Be sure not to miss the bacon, fried oyster, lettuce and tomato sandwich.

• Southeast of town, tucked off the street in an old gas station diner is The Local Joint. Sandwiches, salads and burgers fill the

lunch and dinner menu, but the breakfast options are particularly drool-worthy, and are graciously served until 3 p.m.

• Also worth scoping out is Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack. With locations in both West and South Asheville, Rocky’s serves up Nashville-style spicy hot chicken that nabbed the top spot in the best fried chicken category in the 2015 Best of WNC poll.

BY JONATHAN AMMONS In every city, neighborhoods have their own personalities with characteristics that make them unique and original. You can tell them by their hotspots, places that typify the qualities that define them.

Asheville’s historic neighborhoods and districts are as varied and diverse as the people who inhabit them, with some local gems you’d be remiss to pass by.

DOWNTOWN Asheville’s revitalization was led by a handful of restaurants moving into a mostly boarded-up downtown. Many of them are still slinging grub all these years later, like Mamacita’s, one of the city’s longest-standing institutions. Monster build-your-own burritos and boozy, pint-sized margaritas make up a menu that is a weekly stop for many locals. So is 67 Biltmore, once known as Laurey’s. The iconic sandwich shop has been slicing sandwiches and doling out creations from its deli case for over a decade. For the veg-heads in the group, there’s always Rosetta’s Kitchen for quirky, creative and soulful vegetarian and vegan fare. And should you find yourself in need of a stiff drink, downtown dive bar Lazy Diamond is jampacked with throwback Asheville memorabilia centering on the punk and counterculture vibe that has always been a central tenant of the downtown ethos.

Just outside downtown, in the quaint and historic neighborhood

of Montford, sits Tod’s Tasties, a breakfast and lunch favorite that offers farm-to-table meals at a nice price — be sure not to miss the house-ground burger. Ambrozia serves up a killer Sunday prix fixe brunch and has one of the north side’s more unique dinner menus. For the vegan/vegetarian in the family, there’s Plant. Consistently ranked among the nation’s top vegan restaurants, it offers high-end, plantbased cuisine that takes itself very seriously. If you’re looking for something a little more laid-back or a place to entertain the kids,

SOUTH The south side can seem like an endless strip of chain restaurants, but a few independents have been making waves. The new Sweeten Creek Brewing has become a local haunt with beer brewed on the premises and a killer artisanal sandwich shop run by 12 Bones Smokehouse veteran Chad Gibson. Be sure to try the rueben with house-made corned beef. For something more exotic, try Wild Ginger’s classic Vietnamese cuisine: pho and bahn mi galore. If you seek something a little more elegant, try Biltmore Village’s Fig, a quirky cafe offering bistro classics and a beautifully composed wine list.

EAST On the east side, in an old white stone building from the ’40s is Filo, a favorite Greek café and coffee shop by day, but at night Post 70 Indulgence Bar rolls out the shakers and spoons to stir up classic cocktails and small plates. Just down the road, Copper Crown serves up densely flavorful riffs on Creole and Cajun cuisine, as well as new American dishes and cocktails in a casual atmosphere with ample outdoor seating. In search of a local dive bar? Try the Root Bar, a hole-in-the-wall beer and liquor joint with a massive sandpit out back and a house-invented game called root ball that’s something like a mix of bocce and horseshoes.

WEST/RIVER ARTS DISTRICT The Brew Pump has to be one of the unique neighborhood’s oddest contributions — a beer garden and taphouse in a gas station.

Fill up on gas, Funyuns and local craft beer all in the same stop.

While on the west side, be sure to check out Gospel Night at favorite Westville dive bar the Double Crown, or if you crave something a little grungier, try the Odditorium, the go-to bar for heavy metal and punk shows.

Down the hill in the River Arts District, don’t miss dinner at The Bull and Beggar — classic French cuisine using local and Appalachian ingredients. Burger fans will want to head there on Mondays when burgers are $6 all night long. Or try something from Smoky Park Supper Club’s entirely wood-fired menu while hanging out by the river on the massive patio. Then be sure to hop down the road or float down the river (you can literally do that if you want to) to the Bywater, where the huge riverfront yard is fully stocked with grills, fire pits, games, live music and a liquor bar.

• A rotating selection of frozen treats, such as ice pops and sorbets, is now available at Urban Orchard Cider Co. The ice cream artisans at The Hop have partnered with the cider company to produce alcoholic desserts that are now sold at the Urban Orchard taproom in West Asheville. For grown-ups only!

• Arizona-based business Lulu’s Chocolate has announced intentions to open a location in West Asheville in the near future.

Lulu’s Chocolate produces organic, fair-trade, low-glycemic chocolate free of gluten, soy and dairy. For a sneak peak, Lulu’s Chocolate is sold at West Village Market & Deli and Dobra Tea. • Pastry artist Meg Schearer launched her own business, Whisk AVL, last summer after leaving her longtime post as the head dessert chef at West End Bakery. The new business, which offers pies, cakes, candies, cookies and other treats, operates out of Cecilia’s Kitchen at 961 Merrimon Ave.

• French Broad Chocolates owners Jael and Dan Rattigan were filmed in February 2016 for an episode of the PBS show “A Craftsman’s Legacy.” The episode showcased the couple’s unique bean-to-bar chocolate-making process, which can be observed during Saturday tours of the French Broad Factory and Tasting Room on the South Slope.

• Featured in a 2014 episode of the Cooking Channel program “Unique Sweets” along with other local favorites The Hop and Nightbell, Ruth & Ranshaw specializes in preordered items such as its sumptuous wedding cakes.

However, the Fairview bakery also offers daily selections, including cupcakes (three for $4 on Tuesdays!), cake pops, cookies, creme brulée, Locally owned & operated brownies and cheesecakes. since 2008!

BY JACQUI CASTLE Pint-sized-customer-approved food, entertainment (often in the form of crayons), a laid-back atmosphere — these are just a few examples of ways that area restaurants are ensuring that their establishments create a kid-friendly environment.

Often when people think of kid-friendly dining, they conjure up images of chicken nuggets and grilled cheese. However, a kidfriendly menu does not need to be devoid of imagination.

• Many parents appreciate well-rounded, healthy options that mimic adult choices but in smaller quantities. Tupelo Honey Cafe, Blue Sky Cafe and King Daddy’s Chicken and Waffles all take kids menus up a notch. Each of these restaurants offers innovative children’s meals — some of which are comprised of a combination of nutritious side dishes off the main menu.

• Asheville Food Park, which recently opened in the River Arts District, hosts up to three food trucks at a time, as well as multiple pop-up boutiques. With resident chickens and outdoor fun Asheville Food Park is a lively, unique place to visit with the kids in tow. And its permanent coffee shop, Edna’s at the River, offers bagels, sandwiches and smoothies that will please little customers.

• Asheville Pizza and Brewing Co. walked away with first place in Best of WNC 2015 for Most Kid-Friendly Restaurant.

With movies, arcade games and pizza, what’s not to love? The local favorite also took home several other familycentric Best of WNC awards in 2015, including third place for Best Place for Birthday Parties, second place for Best Family/Kid Friendly Bar and first place for Restaurant with the Best Children’s Menu.

• The Hop ice cream café took home second place in Best of WNC 2015 for Best Place for Birthday Parties. The shop features inventive homemade ice cream flavors, including dairy-free selections, and was listed as one of the “12 Best Ice Cream Shops in America” by the Huffington Post in 2014.

• Biscuit Head in West Asheville offers kids a train table to play with as well as chalkboards and coloring books. In addition, the kids are sure to love adorning their own biscuit with selections from the multitude of jam, butters and honeys available at the toppings bar. Biscuit Head was featured in a June 2015 Good Housekeeping story, “The 6 Best Food Towns to Hit Up This Summer.”

MIXING IT UP ASHEVILLE COCKTAIL BARS FOCUS ON CRAFT

The cocktail scene seemed to materialize out of thin air in Asheville.

After years of mixed drinks appearing to be afterthoughts on craftbeer lists, bars began popping up that made it a priority to know when it was proper to shake or to stir. Not for the light tippler, these bastions of quality hooch focus on timeless, traditional liquor drinks aimed at pleasing the most particular palate.

• Great rustic Italian food isn’t all Cucina 24 has developed a reputation for. The James Beard-nominated restaurant also prides itself on the cocktails of bar manager Donnie Pratt, who leans toward classic titles with a head bent toward innovation. Pratt’s artistic tipples won him the championship in the 2015 Bar Wars AVL cocktail competition.

• Just across the street, MG Road slings up Indian-inspired drinks and regularly hosts pop-up dinners with regionally renowned chefs.

• Sovereign Remedies has seen its farm-to-glass cocktail program praised by such prestigious publications as Imbibe magazine, and for good reason. With an eye on craft technique and a reputation for being consummate hosts, it’s hard to go wrong here, where the food is as good as the impeccable drinks. Xpress readers likewise approve, voting it No. 1 in the cocktails category in the Best of WNC poll in 2015.

• Just outside town, you won’t want to miss Post 70 Indulgence Bar. Coffee shop by day, cocktail bar by night, the Prohibition-era drink list features a sprawling collection of classic and house-designed cocktails. Be sure to catch a Sip & Smoke cigar and liquor tasting on select Wednesdays or one of the weekly and seasonal oyster roasts.

• If you’re in the River Arts District, try The Bull and Beggar. The French-inspired and Southern-ingredient-focused restaurant also slings some of the region’s better booze.

• If you’re looking for a cocktail with a view, try Top of the Monk, just upstairs from local favorite the Thirsty Monk, where the speakeasy-themed bar’s patio overlooks the sunsets of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. An added plus: Xpress readers voted it No.1 in the specialty liquor selection category in the Best of WNC poll in 2015.

• If that whole hidden upstairs bar thing becomes a habit, you’ll want to pair some of the house-cured meats at Imperial Life with one of their stiff-stirred tipples and peer out the windows at the passers-by below.

Western North Carolina’s wine industry is steadily expanding.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture lists 40 wineries in the western part of the state, all an easy drive or daytrip from Asheville. For those who want to experience a full local wine adventure, the French Broad Vignerons recently began organizing regular winery tours by luxury bus, as well as a wine pairing dinner ride in a Great Smoky Mountains Railroad dining car. BY LIISA ANDREASSEN Sometimes eating on the go is just a fact of life. Today’s timechallenged lifestyles often demand a quick food fix. But just because it’s fast doesn’t mean it can’t be good. Here are a few places to try when you need some food on the fly.

• When you crave a little something, stop by The Gourmet Chip Co. for a basket of artisan chips. Sweet or savory, there are several flavors from which to choose. There are paninis, too.

• Creperie Bouchon is home to the farm-to-table crêpe. In pleasant weather, the romantic courtyard garden setting beckons diners to sip on a local brew while trying one of their tasty crêpes. Bon appetit, y’all.

• Serving curries from around the world, Blue Dream Curry House uses high-quality, fresh and locally sourced ingredients.

The owners’ economic philosophy has led them to dispense with tipping; the restaurant is a Living Wage Certified business for both front-of-house and back-of-house employees.

• Gypsy Queen Cuisine in West Asheville says it’s “making the world a safer place, one falafel at a time.” We’re not sure it’s safer, but it sure is tastier. Eastern Mediterranean delights are served with Southern hospitality. Xpress readers agree, awarding the food-truck side of the business second place for best food truck in the 2015 Best of WNC readers’ poll.

• Mama mia! No fast-food roundup would be complete without a few pizza-place recommendations. Chicago-style lovers can

indulge in the deep-dish variety at Del Vecchios in North Asheville. The pizza crusts artisan baker David Bauer crafts from fresh-milled regional grains at All Souls Pizza at the edge of the River Arts District are captivating enough to be featured in a 2016 story in The New York Times. And speaking of the Big Apple, for New York-style pies, there’s Favilla’s New York Pizza (which received the People’s Choice award during the 2015 Pizza Pandemonium competition at Highland Brewing Co.) in West Asheville. There’s no shortage of great pizza places in this town.

• A brand-new project from Mamacita’s owner John Atwater, the Taco Temple on Charlotte Street offers fast tacos with handmade corn tortillas or tortas, a hearty Mexican sandwich. The atmosphere is fun and lively, too.

• With two locations, the Asheville Sandwich Co. is dedicated to providing amazing sandwiches using only the freshest ingredients. The owners pickle their own vegetables and roast their own meats. And in 2015, Xpress readers declared it their favorite, voting it No. 1 in the Sub Shop/Deli/Sandwiches categories in the Best of WNC poll.

BY LIISA ANDREASSEN Southern cuisine isn’t all about pimento cheese and buttermilk biscuits (not that there’s anything wrong with those!). There’s a lot more to it than meets the eye. Asheville is home to a number of upscale and casual spots that serve Southern fare with a twist. But never fear, Southern staples such as cheesy grits and collard greens are never too difficult to find.

• With a name like Southern Kitchen and Bar, one would imagine the menu lives up to the name. Here, diners will find modern American comfort food in a relaxed, open-air setting in the heart of downtown. Try the mac and cheese or shrimp and grits. You’ll be singing Dixie in no time.

• If fresh, scratch-made Southern food is what you’re after, Tupelo Honey does not disappoint. A year-after-year favorite, this Asheville tradition now has three locations in town as well as multiple expansions in other states. It’s the new South meets the old South, and it’s delicious.

• At Local Provisions, chef Justin Burdett indulges his passion for doing elevated riffs on classic Southern and Appalachian fare. Sourcing the bulk of his ingredients from Western North Carolina and the Southeast, the menu features seasonal foraged edibles, meats and produce from area farmers and seafood from the coast of the Carolinas. House-preserved pickles, ferments and charcuterie are another highlight.

• A visit to The Junction in the River Arts District can be a blast from the past or a trip into the future. Its Southern-inspired menu can be both playful and serious, from its house-made “Pop-Tart”

— a menu staple — to its sweet-tea-brined fried chicken, there’s always something new to experience.

• No visit to the South is complete without a taste of barbecue, and Asheville has lots of choices. For something smoked low and slow, head over to Buxton Hall BBQ on the hip South Slope. Housed in an enormous historic space that once served as a wood-floored roller rink, there’s place to dine outside at picnic tables, too. For a piece of Asheville history, check out Little Pigs BBQ. Featured in a 2014 story in Our State magazine, Little Pigs is still run by Joe and Peggy Swicegood, who opened the restaurant in 1963.

And in both the River Arts District and South Asheville, there’s 12 Bones Smokehouse, a laid-back, no-frills joint (and a favorite of President Obama) that offers a variety of smoked, pulled meats; ribs and specialty sandwiches. If you’re really hungry, try the Hogzilla, which piles a mountain of sugar bacon, bratwurst, pulled pork and pepperjack cheese onto a hoagie bun.

In fact, alternative diets are becoming more and more mainstream. And even if a restaurant isn’t dubbed gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian, many still cater to diners who are. Here’s a small sampling of places to consider: • Nine Mile has two spots — the original is in the historic Montford district and its sister locale is in West Asheville. This full-service restaurant is a treat for the senses, featuring Caribbean-inspired dishes boasting bold spices and hearty flavors. While there is plenty of meat on the menu, vegetarian and vegan options are available, such as the smoked tempeh-based Ras Rootz Chili, and most entrees can be made with jerk tofu or tempeh upon request. Nine Mile also offers gluten-free fusilli and raw zucchini spirals as pasta options.

• As its name indicates, Merrimon Avenue restaurant Plant specializes in all things plant-based. Chef Jason Sellers has crafted an inspired vegan menu that consistently wins praise from national media outlets, including Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure and many others.

• A new favorite, Elements Real Food in North Asheville, is a cool spot for cold-pressed juices and organic, plant-based food that is consciously sourced. The business started out as a food truck, but a growing demand for Elements products led to a brick-andmortar eatery.

• The Green Sage Café has three locations around town serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each one caters to the concept of “nourishing life,” inspired by the mountains of Western North Carolina. Menu items incorporate local and organic ingredients whenever possible, and feature numerous plant-based choices, including sandwiches, wraps, salads and desserts such as the vegan almond butter brownie. Gluten-sensitive bread, biscuits and buns are available.

• An Asheville classic, Laughing Seed Café has been serving up vegetarian fare for more than 20 years. Quality and creativity are the driving forces behind its eclectic and international approach to plant-based dining, which has led to its popularity with vegetarians and meat lovers alike. A large and varied children’s menu makes it a good choice for family members of all ages.

• On the south end of town, Bean Vegan Cuisine offers vegan riffs on comfort food classics such as its Pimento Cheesish Dip, jackfruit-based Crabbie Patty, barbecue sandwiches and seitanbased reuben. With an opening time of 10 a.m., there is also a breakfast menu available.

• With a contemporary American bent, Posana faces Pack Square in the middle of the downtown action. The completely glutenfree menu changes regularly, and executive chef and owner Peter Pollay seeks to accommodate a variety of dietary needs. Posana sources unprocessed, premium ingredients from nearly 65 local purveyors, farmers and its own gardens in West Asheville.

• Wander into 5 Walnut on any given evening, perch yourself in a window seat and expect the rest to follow. With a host of Western North Carolina’s highly regarded local craft cheeses — plus an in-house cheese bar to be opened this summer — all you have to do is make the difficult decision of which wine to select from its thoroughly curated and lusty list. Mountain Xpress readers gave 5 Walnut a big thumbs-up in the Best of WNC 2015 poll, voting it Best Wine Bar. • If the live music thing tends to draw you to a glass of white, red, bubbly or rose, be sure to check out the Cork & Keg Bar inside the long-standing Weinhaus wine shop with its nightly live acts, cheese plates and a store full of wines to choose from.

• Santé Wine Bar and Tap Room and Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar make great bookends to the astoundingly beautiful Grove Arcade. Santé centers on sustainably produced keg wines and small plates, and offers a great spot to find a decent glass of wine with lunch, while the Book Exchange provides a scholarly hideaway that combines an antique bookstore, coffee shop and wine bar. Santé and the Book Exchange also felt the love from Xpress readers, coming in second and third, respectively, for best wine bar in the 2015 Best of WNC readers’ poll.

• To experience wine from the grape to the glass, visit one of Western North Carolina’s many vineyards. Several area wineries offer tasting rooms, and train and bus tours organized by the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad and local group the French Broad Vignerons provide opportunities for winethemed daytrips.

• Cheese lovers who want to go straight to the source can pay a visit to Looking Glass Creamery in Fairview. There, guests can sip on a glass of wine while sampling a variety of fresh cheeses and three flavors of goat milk caramel made on-site by owners Andy and Jennifer Perkins. A longtime favorite of locals, Looking Glass is also garnering national attention. An April 2016 story in USA Today referred to the creamery’s Old Drovers Road cheddar as “one of the most distinctive cheddars in the South.”

Originally, American brewers used wild hops, but cultivation soon began in New England, Virginia and New York and moved to the West Coast states of Washington, Oregon and California by the mid-1800s where it has thrived ever since.
