The Best of WNC honors and promotes local businesses, helping them grow and excel. It’s a guide to the shops, institutions, professionals and places that readers like and trust most. It identifies civic problems we face and, looked at over the years, shows how the community is evolving over time.

I

n a food-obsessed town like Asheville, Best of WNC voting is fiercely competitive in the Eats categories. Thousands of readers cast ballots in support of their most beloved restaurants, chefs and edibles.

Xpress readers come by their opinions through experience.

They eat at full-service restaurants more than six times per month, according to our 2016 survey. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that the most heavily voted category each year is Favorite Restaurant. This year’s race resulted in an interesting upset.

In 2013, Spanish tapas powerhouse Cúrate claimed the top spot (and held it through 2015) — while in that same year, the Caribbean-inspired Nine Mile entered the rankings in third, moving up each subsequent year until it tied with Cúrate in 2015. But this year, voters put Nine Mile in the winner’s circle, with Curate ranking second.

A multitude of voters weighed in on who should lay claim to Asheville’s best New Restaurant. With numerous fledgling eateries opening in the past year, the options were many. When the counting was done, the honors went to Red Ginger — which has

brought dim sum to town, a genre many voters had identified over the years as Restaurant Still Needed In Asheville. Placing second in the New Restaurant category was Copper Crown, which, despite being only a few months old, was also voted best Restaurant In East Asheville. Other culinary newcomers found their way into various Eats categories as well: For example, while White Duck Taco maintained its years-long hold on the No. 1 slot in the Taco competition, TacoBilly splashed into second place just a few months after its debut.

sheville defines itself as a foodie town, but beverages clearly enjoy a top priority as well. This year ushered in the inaugural Asheville Cocktail Week, which drew bar professionals and distillers from across the Southeast. Following quickly on its heels, Asheville Beer Week celebrated its fifth anniversary in May, highlighting Western North Carolina’s craft breweries with nine days of beer-centric events. The local coffee culture also proved to be robust, as established businesses, such as High Five, PennyCup and Izzy’s, expanded, and new shops such as Trade and Lore opened.

Voting in the 2016 Best of WNC Drinks section revealed some notable trends in area drinking tastes. It’s probably no surprise that West Asheville, with its lively nightlife, posted the most votes among the various Neighborhood Bar races (Downtown came in second). What’s more, previously sleepy East Asheville, which recently added cocktail hotspots such as Copper Crown and Post 70 Indulgence Bar, made a strong showing as well, outpacing South Asheville’s turnout. And, if we are to judge interest by the overall number of votes cast in a category, voters prefer dive bars to upscale bars, but favor both of those to sports bars. What’s the section’s most-voted category? The greatest number of you liquid-imbibers chose to weigh in on best All-Round Brewery.

Xpress readers drink locally made beer or cider an average of more than seven times per month, according to our readers survey this year. Given that and the fact that there are two dozen (and counting!) craft breweries in Buncombe County, it was a no-

brainer that the beer categories would attract hordes of voters.

Besides All-Round Brewery, the second and third most-voted brewery/beer categories were Local Beer (any style) and Local Cidery. And although an American ale (Highland Brewing Co.’s Gaelic Ale), a pale ale (Pisgah Pale Ale) and an ESB (from Green Man Brewing Co.) proved to be the favored local beers, the ballots tell us that IPAs are also the top choice, followed by dark beers.

Hard cider is also apparently gaining traction as a preferred Asheville drink — the Local Cidery category received more votes than the categories for Wine Bar and Cocktails.

Apparently, nonalcoholic beverages are near and dear to Asheville’s heart too. Nearly as many of you showed up to support your favorite local coffeehouse as weighed in on the top breweries. And voters came out in droves to name the best spots in town to sip a cup of tea and get top-notch smoothies and juice.

W

ith warm, Asian noodles wriggling between my fingers and a fizzy rush of Coke mingling with the salt deposits around my mouth, I pause to wonder why I just spent the better part of four hours running 17.8 miles of gnarly, uphill single-track known as the Shut-In Ridge Trail Run (Best Trail Run). The post-race treats provided by race organizers are among the best, and contextually sublime, but certainly not a chief motivator. It’s autumn in Asheville, and I’m one of just over 200 people continuing a more than three-decades tradition of tackling 3,000 feet of elevation gain in between uphill hiking, downhill diggers and a bit of ceremonial bloodletting to appease the mountains. In my five years running this race, I’ve seen snow, sleet, rain and clear skies while taking in autumn’s full-color spectrum with teases of winter’s wide-open viewsheds — all while bouncing across the watercolor-come-to-life, shoulder-width, leaf-littered trail.

mimic my knock-kneed swaying in the wind. And then I remember why, despite swearing it would be my last year, that I’ll be back next year.

Shut-In Ridge Trail Run is a composite sketch of everything that calls us to sip coffee on the porch staring at mountain peaks, romp through the woods on foot or bike, serpentine around the Blue Ridge Parkway, float and play in our various rivers, creeks and lakes — all the ways we answer the call of the wild. f you’ve tried to park at Hall of Fame-winner North Asheville Tailgate Market, held weekly on the UNC Asheville campus, you know how much this town loves to support local agriculture. Why else would hundreds of shoppers queue up for parking spaces and dodge produce-laden pedestrians week after week throughout the growing season?

Xpress readers report visiting a farmers market or tailgate market an average of nearly three times a month, and they buy locally grown produce an average of seven times a month, according to this year’s online survey. Asked what they wish for, 15 percent chose “a farm” from a broad list of options. The only things more yearned for are better health and a better job and pay.

he medium is the message, declared media prophet Marshall McLuhan 52 years ago, and while there’s certainly an array of hot and cold media from which residents of Asheville and Western North Carolina get their news — Xpress readers still prefer theirs from “cool” print rather than online: 59 percent say they get their Xpress fix either entirely or mostly in print, compared to 14 percent who rely all or mostly on the web, according to this year’s online poll. Adding support for print, survey respondents (to an online poll, of all things) read, on average, more than two print publications per week.

Congratulations go to two longtime Best of WNC winners (five years or more in a row): The Laurel of Asheville took top honors once again for Free Publication Other Than Xpress, while ashevegas.com held on to its title for Local Website Other Than MountainX.com.

f all Asheville’s competing dichotomies, our employment issues are some of the most paradoxical. With local unemployment hovering around 3.5 percent, many businesses struggle to find qualified workers — while our town’s legendarily overeducated workers say it is fiendishly difficult to find a job that pays enough for them to live in and enjoy Asheville. Yet, according to Xpress’ 2016 online survey, the largest self-identified segment is “Living the dream” and almost half of those responding profess unusual job satisfaction (rating their professional contentment 8 or higher on a scale of 1-10).

One of the secrets to Asheville’s blossoming economy in a sea of struggling North Carolina communities is our passionate pursuit and support of dreams. Whether yours is to save the bees or to be a writer, there is likely a ready market for your “product.” We adore local food in all its forms, buy crafts from local artists, drink at our breweries and patronize a host of businesses — from home food delivery to dog-poo pickup. And there is a support system in place to help those dreams come true: Many of our successful small businesses have received assistance from local nonprofits such as Mountain BizWorks,

We donate money to causes 8.8 times per year and volunteer at 1.8 nonprofits annually, at an average of eight hours/month, according to this year’s online poll. This willingness to give our time, money and business to nonprofits demonstrates the community-oriented and compassionate nature of the people who live here. ur pets are extensions of ourselves. On a leash (handmade, of course, by local artisans from sustainable hemp with 100 percent of the proceeds supporting Puppies With No Homes) or on a rope (the lead of choice for transient busking youth dressed in earth-toned clothing often seen in large groups on downtown sidewalks with multiple dogs in tow) — Asheville is filled with people accompanied by four-legged companions. Even an occasional goat can be spotted on the sidewalk (folks, consider keeping your livestock at home).

If you didn’t notice the dogs — on tethers, in strollers, in backpacks and sometimes in wheelchairs, not to mention at outdoor seating in nearly every Asheville restaurant — check out the bumper stickers and the outpouring of support for our pet-centric nonprofit agencies. We have rescue organizations for dogs, cats, wildlife, chickens, goats, horses and other farm animals. We have rescue agencies for humans using animals as therapists to help veterans, troubled youth, prison populations, survivors of trauma and hospital patients.

Ashevilleans rate and sort each other on their level of professed animal kindness: Many restaurants and bars have vegan options so everyone can feel included. We have animal-friendly bars, res-

taurants, hotels and outdoor spots to enjoy time with your pet (or the pet of the guy in the next booth over). We even voted Brother Wolf’s Outward Hounds best Hiking Club Or Group.
