City and county should work to reduce poverty As we welcome the new year here in Asheville and Buncombe County, many of us are enjoying significant good luck, good health and prosperity.

But good health and prosperity have not reached everyone: In a recent study, Buncombe County ranked among the worst places in the U.S. — 92nd out of more than 2,400 counties nationwide — when it came to the inability of children to move out of poverty.

Children of color, the fastest-growing segment of Buncombe County’s child population, are two to three times as likely to live in poverty as their non-Hispanic white peers.

Each and every year, poverty costs Asheville and Buncombe County millions in health care, social services, and lost prosperity and opportunity. Poverty hurts all of us — no matter our personal wealth. ...

Poverty is a crisis in our community that we can no longer afford. ...

Other city governments have undertaken similar efforts. In Richmond, Va., the Office of Community Wealth Building was established to increase wealth

and reduce poverty for all citizens.

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, launched End Poverty Edmonton to advance a vision of shared prosperity for all.

In Charlotte, the Renaissance West Community Initiative is deploying the Purpose Built Communities model focused on mixed-income housing, education, youth and adult development programs, health and wellness services, and commercial investment.

These strategies build a strong case for ending poverty on three fronts: the economic argument, the human rights case and the public opinion approach.

Fortunately for Asheville, this new year, there is funding available for our city to join the prosperity movement.

Invest Health is a grant opportunity that will support new partnerships in up to 50 midsized cities across the nation.

Midsized cities are where the majority of Americans live and where many experience some of nation’s deepest challenges with entrenched poverty, poor health and lack of investment.

Cyclists, avoid parkway during rush hour I love the Blue Ridge Parkway!

Now someone (John C. Tripp, Letters, Dec. 30) is upset that commuters use the Blue Ridge Parkway, some of whom are rude to him (and by extension to other bike riders).

He writes that the parkway was constructed “to ‘provide opportunities for high-quality scenic and recreational experiences,’ for motor vehicles, hiker and cyclists” [“Parkway Has Become Commuter Shortcut”].

According to the parkway’s Long Range Interpretive Plan 2002, “The legislated purpose of the Blue Ridge Parkway . . . is to link Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee by way of a recreation-oriented motor road intended for public use and enjoyment. ... [T]he intended purpose of the Blue Ridge Parkway is to conserve, interpret and exhibit the unique natural and cultural resources of the central and southern Appalachian Mountains, as well as provide for leisure motor travel through a variety of environments” (emphasis mine). There is no mention of bicycle travel in either the originating legislation or the subsequent interpretation.

bicyclists to use the parkway for recreation (or commuting). I make every effort to accommodate them (just as I do pedestrians.) I live in East Asheville, and I often use the strip of parkway from 74-A to Hendersonville Road, taking advantage both of the time saved (if any) and the scenic nature of the drive as compared with I-40, which would be my alternate route.

The National Park Service has noted the use of this section of the parkway around southeast to south Asheville as a commuting thoroughfare and consequently reduced the speed limit on that section (much to the annoyance of many who do not pay attention to signage).

The writer suggests that this portion of the parkway be closed to commuters during rush hour. One wonders how they would do that.

(PARKWAY RANGER: “Are you a commuter?” TRAVELER No. 1: “No, sir.” RANGER: “Are you a commuter?”

TRAVELER No. 2: “No, sir.” Etc., until, RANGER: “Are you (etc.) TRAVELER No. 15: “Yes.” RANGER: ”I’m sorry you’ll have to turn around and get off the parkway." Repeat.)

Of course, there are jerks driving the parkway and bicycling the parkway just as there are anywhere. I suggest that if Mr. Tripp has a problem on the parkway during commuting hours, he avoid the parkway at that time, just as motorists anywhere learn what routes to avoid during rush hours.

UDO favors cars over immigrants Anyone who thinks Asheville City Council welcomes immigrants more than superhighways clearly has never read the Unified Development Ordinance, which is a document clearly calculated to bring in more cars while keeping out immigrants and domestic migrants both.

To bring in cars, the UDO is full of mandatory parking requirements,

while Council repeatedly uses corporate welfare to attract more commuters.

To keep out immigrants, the UDO tightly restricts apartment building height, unit density and mobile homes in most areas.

It’s hard to imagine a document or a policy that causes more cars per immigrant despite Council’s laughable rhetoric to the contrary; and it’s no accident.

Thank you for the great [post about] Joseph Scotchie"s newest book, A Gallery of Ashevilleans: The History of a

People of a Mountain Town [Dec. 31, Xpress]. Joseph was always a reader; [he] started with sports and then went on to even reading the World Book Encyclopedia for the joy of reading and learning all on his own.

He also wrote a play, Robert E. Lee. Do we have a theater in Asheville that would love to perform this amusing and history-filled play? I understand one-man plays take at least three actors to perform the same man. What a wonderful play for Ashevilleans and visitors alike.

We do live in a city rich in so many talents.

A change is gonna come Oralene Simmons keeps the flame alive

Changing times

By virginia daffron vdaffron@mountainx.com “It’s important for people to understand: This event is not just something I decided to do,” says Oralene Anderson Graves Simmons, sitting in her Kenilworth home surrounded by photos and mementos of Asheville’s long-running Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast.

Simmons founded the breakfast, one of the oldest such events in the country, back in 1982. The third Monday in January didn’t become a federal holiday honoring King until the following year and wasn’t celebrated as such until 1986. But long before even the first prayer breakfast, says Simmons, she had “a feeling of wanting to make a change” based on the injustices she’d witnessed and experienced in her own life.

Born in Madison County, Simmons attended elementary school in Mars Hill. But after completing the sixth grade, she had to make a daily 42-mile round trip to attend the segregated Hill Street School and then Stephens-Lee High School in Asheville. “I had to catch a bus and travel to another county to get an education,” she recalls. “I would pass by schools and we could not stop — that bus couldn’t stop there — because of the color of our skins.”

Sometimes Simmons stayed in Asheville during the school week, but weekends would almost always find her making the bus trip back to Mars Hill. “I would take a shortcut across the Mars Hill College campus from the bus stop to our house,” she remembers, “and I would wish I could look forward to going to college there. I mean, this was my home.”

But Simmons had an even closer tie to the school: Her great-great-grandfather, enslaved bricklayer Joe Anderson, was jailed in the 1850s as collateral for a debt the institution couldn’t pay. The community hurriedly raised funds to secure his release, saving him from being auctioned off to cover the bill. Today, Anderson is considered one of the college’s founders. His grave was moved to the campus in 1932, and several local streets, the Anderson Rosenwald School and a park all bear his name.

Despite recognizing Anderson’s contributions, however, Mars Hill College had never admitted a black student. In 1961, at the age of 17, Simmons became the first. She was also an active member of the Asheville Student Committee on Racial Equality. From 1960 through 1965, ASCORE used nonviolent protest tactics to desegregate local restaurants, Pack Library, Recreation Park and its pool, public restrooms, Memorial Mission Hospital and the old Coxe Avenue bus station waiting rooms.

After graduating with a degree in elementary education, Simmons continued working for social change as

Her first job was as a commissioner for the Model Cities program, part of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. “I wanted to bring about a change in employment, health care and housing,” she recalls. When the program ended, Simmons took a position with Asheville’s Parks & Recreation Department.

By 1982, Simmons was the director of the Montford Community Center. That January, she organized Asheville’s first prayer breakfast. Although everyone was welcome, it was envisioned as primarily an event for the immediate Montford neighborhood, which was then predominantly black. Still, Simmons asked the newspaper to run a small article announcing the breakfast, and on that cold and snowy morning, about 75 people from all across the city showed up to celebrate King’s legacy. “The times were just right for it,” she recalls, and the event grew quickly after that.

The Montford Community Center gymnasium could accommodate up to 500 guests. But as ticket sales swung into high gear for the 1986 breakfast, Simmons and her fellow organizers realized they needed a bigger venue. For one thing, it was the first year the federal holiday was actually being celebrated. For another, the keynote speaker was a major draw: Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to Congress and, in 1972, the first black woman to seek a major party’s presidential nomination.

Simmons settled on the Civic Center. “We had a feeling we were going to have maybe 700 to 800 people,” she remembers. “It ended up being 2,000, and I was just so proud.”

Longtime event volunteer Julia Nooe, a retired Mars Hill University professor, says Asheville’s prayer breakfast has attracted many luminaries as keynote speaker over the years. In addition to Chisholm, Nooe mentions Democratic Party strategist Donna Brazile; civil rights leaders Bernard LaFayette Jr., Dorothy Cotton and the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth; National Public Radio journalist Juan Williams and Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. as some of the prominent leaders who’ve anchored the event.

“And the keynote speakers were always just elated, once the lights were turned on, to see the diverse group of people that attended,” adds Simmons. “It wasn’t all black people; it wasn’t all dignitaries: It was something for the entire community.”

In 1990, Asheville hosted the state’s celebration of the holiday. In 1992, Simmons received the The Making of the King Holiday Award from the hands of Coretta Scott King, the slain civil rights leader’s widow. As a member of North Carolina’s King holiday commission, Simmons traveled to many cities around the country to attend planning conferences and events, including a 1999 celebration of King’s life and legacy at the United Nations.

Over time, however, the Civic Center became a less welcoming venue. One year, new enclosures installed around the ice hockey rink limited the floor area, forcing some guests to sit in the bleachers and creating a bottleneck at the serving lines. Another time, a gun show was slated to follow the breakfast.

So in 2000, the event moved to the Grove Park Inn, where it would be held for the next 14 years. A high point of those years was 2009, when excitement over Barack Obama’s inauguration as the nation’s first African-American president inspired a record turnout

of more than 2,000. “I heard so many people say, ‘This is where I thought I should be today,’” Simmons recalls.

ChANgE OF vENuE Last year, driven by concerns about parking fees at the Grove Park Inn, the event moved again, this time to the Crowne Plaza Resort’s Expo Room. Attendance held steady, with a crowd of around 1,150 filling the big ballroom. Simmons thinks the space worked well for the community celebration, adding, “This year, we need to do a little tweaking with the sound.

Even though I’ve been doing this for 35 years,” she continues with a laugh, “it’s not something I can do with my eyes closed: Each year brings a different challenge.”

This year’s breakfast will be dedicated to the memory of longtime event organizer clara jeter, who died in August. “She was our ticket lady, and we all loved her so much,” Simmons says softly, her voice quivering with emotion. “She was a very giving person who was concerned about others. She was very active with the Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry, which she directed for 15 years.

After she retired, she volunteered at ABCCM five days a week.”

This year’s theme, “A Call to Service,” honors Jeter’s life as well as Coretta Scott King’s vision of the holiday as “a day on, not a day off” — a day to serve others.

The Rev. patricia bacon of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Asheville will give the invocation, while the Rev. jim mccoy, pastor of Weaverville First Baptist Church, will offer the closing prayer. Music will be provided by the Spirit Choir, led by damion mcday, who first performed at the breakfast as a 9-year-old soloist. rodney johnson, who recently retired as executive director of parent services at George Washington University, will present the keynote address. The Asheville native graduated from Asheville High School in 1968 and attended Mars Hill College.

After graduation, he coached basketball at UNC Asheville, where he also created the office of minority affairs.

“There’s a lot of honor,” notes Johnson, the first Asheville native ever asked to deliver the breakfast’s keynote speech. “Asheville has been very important in my life: I am who I am right now because of what Asheville gave me,” he says. And though he’s reluctant to reveal too

King’s example has been another powerful force. “I’ve gone and I’ve stood where he stood to deliver his address at the Lincoln Memorial,” Johnson recalls.

“I am really looking forward to speaking about the influence Asheville had on me and relating that to Dr. King’s message of love.”

ChANgiNg hEARTS Jeter’s death last year highlighted one challenge facing the prayer breakfast: recruiting and mentoring the next generation of civil rights leaders to carry King’s legacy forward. “Our board includes a number of younger people this year, from institutions like A-B Tech and UNC Asheville, as well as agencies, organizations and the business community,” says Simmons.

One of those younger leaders is local business owner namurah blakely, who’s also Simmons’ daughter. And though this is her first year serving

on the executive committee, Blakely is hardly a newcomer to the event. “I don’t say I was very much help, but I remember the first breakfast very well,” she says, laughing. “I was 11 or 12 years old, and I thought I was helping.” Her biggest concern is continuing to foster a sense of inclusiveness. “We want to make sure everyone feels welcome: every community, every religion, every race,” Blakely emphasizes.

Even the event’s financial support structure helps generate a sense of community ownership and pride.

“When you buy an ad in our souvenir journal, you have a feeling that you own a piece of it,” Simmons explains.

“And people like to buy a whole table of 10 seats, so they can sit together and celebrate with their family, their church or their co-workers.”

Many people use the breakfast to reawaken and reaffirm their own commitment to social justice. “People say it sets the tone for the rest of their year.

If they start in January with a certain feeling — one of love, peace, human dignity and respect — it will not be just for one day,” Simmons maintains. “It’s that way for me: When it’s time to start planning for the breakfast, I’m just a little more mindful of how I say things to people, and my thoughts and actions and prayers.”

Nooe, too, says the breakfast provides an opportunity to step back and consider the bigger picture. “It’s easy to get into our lives and lose sight of where we’re moving in social justice,” she points out. “The breakfast gives us a chance for renewal. We review where we’ve gone and reassess where we’re going. And we always look to see what we can do better.”

At the same time, it’s also a chance to step out in style. Although things have relaxed a bit in recent years, Simmons fondly recalls the beautiful outfits that were once de rigueur. “When we first started, people really dressed up, real high: ladies wearing their beautiful hats and their throws and everything.

It was their dignity, and they were so proud of the event,” she says with a radiant smile.

Readings of selections from King’s writings and speeches are another key part of the breakfast. Hearing his words, says Simmons, creates a direct connection to the civil rights leader’s life and work. Although she took part in the 1963 March on Washington, she doesn’t claim to have marched with King. “But I will say I marched with him in my heart: I carried him, and I carry him, in my heart,” she explains.

Meanwhile, through her work on the state’s King holiday commission,

Simmons did get to know Coretta Scott King “and traveled with her to different events.”

Looking back, notes Simmons, “We have made some progress: We can change rules and laws and say that we are entitled to certain things.

But in trying to achieve those things, stumbling blocks are put in our way … because the hearts of many people have not been changed. You see that with the brutality of many of the police departments. You hear so many politicians talking now, because we’re going into a presidential election year.”

King’s example, though, points the way, Simmons maintains. “That’s why this event is so important: We change their hearts through love.” X

And a 6 p.m. candlelight service at Nazareth First Missionary Baptist Church (146 Pine St.) will feature a keynote address by the Rev. clark olsen, a retired Unitarian minister whose participation in the 1965 Selma march is the subject of the film Murder in Selma. Poet jaki shelton green will also read from her work. Both Monday events are free and open to all.

Local leaders reflect on King’s legacy

WHAT WOULD As Western North Carolina prepares to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr., Xpress asked various local leaders to reflect on King’s influence and legacy nearly half a century after his assassination on April 4, 1968.

Some of these people remember King’s life and work well.

Some even participated in the civil rights movement or heard

him speak at marches in Washington, Selma and beyond.

Others hadn’t even been born yet when King was killed. All of them, however, say his work and example had a profound impact on American society that continues today. Here’s what they had to say, along with some compelling quotes from King himself.

“During the civil rights era, I was a part of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. There were some differences between our group and King’s group.

We were in favor of long-term involvement with the community, rather than just coming in and having marches and so forth. I was there in Selma, not during the bridge incident, but later that

evening. I had an opportunity to hear Martin speak. … I was in the balcony of the church. He had me inspired so much I was about to jump out of that balcony.

“I saw nonviolence as a strategy, not as a way of life. I found myself in a situation in Mississippi one time where nonviolence was my best way out. I was facing a lynch mob. The whole town had just stormed the jail, busted the windows out, all kinds of crazy stuff going on. The police attacked me and hit me in the mouth and smacked me and beat me. My only tactic was to be submissive and to not fight back.

If I had fought back, I probably wouldn’t be here today. Nonviolence as a tactic was really effective.

“Later on in his career, Dr. King was more and more focused on the peace movement and the labor movement. We got the right to go in the restaurants and to go to the movie theater. But then we

reached in our pockets and found out that we didn’t necessarily have the money to do those things. So employment, jobs and things like that became a big issue.”

If King were alive today, he “would be concentrating on education. We should all be concentrating on education, because we can’t really have a democracy without an educated populace. The more uneducated people that we have, the less democracy we have. So I’m sure he would be talking about ‘How can we move education forward and make it available to all people?’”

“We shouldn’t just look at the legacy and think that we have arrived.

We haven’t arrived at anything, really: Things are better for some people, but they are not better for all people. And, like Dr. King says, until things are good for all people, things are bad for all people. We need to keep that in mind.”

“I’m sure [King’s] biggest issue today would be the violence. He created a nonviolent movement. In studying this, I learned that so many acts are considered violent. He felt just saying harsh words toward somebody is committing violence against them.

It is an act of violence not to feed those that are hungry. It’s an act of violence to deny health care for the sick and the poor and not to have adequate housing and employment.

As individuals, we are obligated to think about our actions. As a city, we must work together to support better educational opportunities, increased job creation and training, better housing choices that provide a safe environment for children, and dependable transportation that is useful for all of our citizens.”

commitment to love. Just because you say you are nonviolent, there has to be something motivating you to stand, and to withstand, the hose, the dogs, the blows, the shouts. You have got to be there and stand there because of love, not because of nonviolence.

“I don’t think [King] would say there’s one issue that rises above all the others today. I think he would talk about education not being where it needs to be for African-Americans. I think he would look at the unemployment rate among AfricanAmericans and challenge the nation to make some changes. I think he would look at the issue of immigration and how lowerincome people are treated. He would look at a broad array of issues. He would thank those that are making a commitment for change, and he would say, ”Do more, do better.“ And he would challenge those who are silent, who are sitting on the sidelines, to do more, to get engaged.”

“I have worked on the prayer breakfast for so many years for the simple reason that Dr. King stood for all people. It wasn’t only for black people: It was for all people. He believed in equality, he believed in fairness and he believed in the goodness every person was created for.

“I don’t think his legacy will ever be forgotten, but also I am concerned that it is not known to many of the younger generation. If

you don’t know where you’ve been, then you don’t know where you’re going. So the breakfast is not only a legacy for him but a way to build unity in the community.

“Sometimes it seems we have made one step forward and two steps back, and I think [King] would be disappointed in that. It is up to all of us individually to continue to live for the ideals that he lived for and died for.”

“Since the birth of the modern civil rights movement, we have seen much progress, evidenced by the presence of blacks and other minorities in high places in government, education, sports and entertainment. But more and more it seems as if our country is going backward in terms of social justice and equity. When you see laws that protect voting rights and affirmative action being chipped away, you can’t help but reflect on what Martin Luther King would say about the issues facing our nation. Give!LocaL raises $37,000pLus for nonprofits

ThE giviNg SEASON: During November and December, the Mountain Xpress launched its new annual campaign, Give!Local. In total, $37,679 was raised for 30 local nonprofit organizations.

By midnight on Thursday, Dec. 31, the Mountain Xpress Give!Local campaign brought in $37,679 in donations for 30 local nonprofits.

All donations will go directly to the nonprofit of the donor’s choice, from environmental organizations to animal rescues — theater groups to crisis centers.

Give!Local began on Oct. 30, celebrated with a kickoff party at The Orange Peel, in which one of the chosen nonprofits, The Asheville Music School, sent three ensembles to perform for the large crowd.

“Our mission, in three words, is: Promote local activism,” said Xpress publisher jeff fobes at the kickoff party. “We want our readers to get civically involved, because a more active community is a healthier, wiser, better community.”

The donation spree ran for two months before ending on New Year’s Eve, with some “Big Give” days sprinkled throughout to offer donors some special incentives.

Coming out on top of the campaign was The Lord’s Acre, a rela-

tively new nonprofit that raised $5,922 in the two-month time period. The Lord’s Acre is sited on a 1-acre property in Fairview and produces 9.5 tons of fresh produce annually, which is then donated to local food banks, aiming to end hunger holistically.

The nonprofit brought in two donations amounting to $500, one donation of $600 and another for a whopping $1,000, and still surpassed other nonprofits in number of individual donors — amassing 64 donations over the course of Give!Local.

“We got some great news from one of the nonprofits, The POP Project,” said susan hutchinson, who coordinated the Give!Local campaign. “This project raised a third of their budget for 2016. For a very small nonprofit, that’s huge. That makes a significant impact to them.”

In all, 340 people donated to the campaign, making 980 donations (just under three per person), with each person averaging $111 each.

Give!Local began not in Asheville but 14 years ago in Portland, Ore., at the Willamette Week. After 14 years of

promoting the Give!Guide’s brand, the Willamette Week raised more than $3 million in nonprofit donations in 2015.

But, Hutchinson says, “I think we’re totally on track” for the campaign’s goals after the first year. “It was a new project; we didn’t know what was going to happen. But we’re hoping to increase the participating nonprofits next year, and I anticipate maybe doubling the donations coming in.

“Now that people are familiar with it, it’ll be easier to explain,” she says, laughing. “It’s hard explaining to someone why they should give away 400 cups of coffee [for an incentive package]. They say, ‘Yeah right! Dream on!’

But now we have this real campaign with a real voucher book to show you: This is why you should participate.”

Another popular nonprofit on the Asheville list was Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue in Fletcher. Sixty-two people donated to the animal rescue’s Give!Local campaign, averaging nearly $22 per person — for a total of $1,353.

Charlie’s Angels brings in dogs and cats whose times are up at kill-shelters across Western North Carolina, often shipping potential pets up north to fill out shelters in need of animals, giving them a heightened chance at forever homes.

Along with The Lord’s Acre and Charlie’s Angels, The Give!Local campaign raised funds for 28 other nonprofits: Homeward Bound, The Magnetic Theatre, Loving Food Resources, Asheville Humane Society, Helpmate, CarePartners, The NC Arboretum Society, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, Sleep Tight Kids, the POP Project, MountainTrue, Muddy Sneakers, Helios Warriors, Our VOICE, Friends of the WNC Nature Center, Heart Songs, Wild South, Asheville Music School, LEAF, Arts for Life, Asheville Design Center, Heart of Horse Sense, Irene Wortham Center, Montford Park Players, Organic Growers School, Friends of Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Center for Craft, Creativity and Design and Mountain Bizworks.

“We tried to keep a balance of size and categories,” Hutchinson says of the nonprofits picked for the campaign.

“Health, environment, animals, arts.

We wanted to grab a broad selection of categories, and a broad selection of million-dollar organizations versus $2,000 nonprofits.”

The strongest day of the campaign was Dec. 1, a “Big Give Day,” which raised $9,791 for the local organizations. On these incentive days, a few lucky donors were chosen to receive a number or prizes; the Dec. 1 offerings were a $50 gift certificate to Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., dinner for two at Chestnut, $125 Downton Abbey Vintage Banquet Experience at Lex 18, a deluxe package to the Montford Park Players and a reiki session at EMERGE Asheville.

“I had no idea what to expect for our first year,” Hutchinson says. “First donations came in really fast, and then they got slow — and then they came in fast, and then they came in slow again. It was a nailbiter. But in the end, 11 people gave over $1,000, and that’s great. That’s amazing. And it really varied too: Some people gave $1,000 to their favorite organization, and some people gave $1,000 and divided it among 10. What’s great about this campaign is that it allowed people the flexibility to do what they will with their money — all in one spot.”

Xpress plans to run the Give!Local campaign every year in November and December, just in time for the holiday giving season. And make sure to check back with Xpress midyear to nominate candidates for The Julian Award, another aspect of Give!Local.

This year, Western Carolina Medical Society Project Access Coordinator shaneka simmons won The Julian, designed to reward young locals for their excellence in nonprofit work (with a $1,000 cash prize). Simmons, through Project Access, works with low-income patients, helping connect them with medical assistance they might not otherwise be able to afford.

To qualify for the Julian Award, a nominee must be doing exceptional, creative work in the nonprofit sector, work at least 30 hours per week for a nonprofit in Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood or Madison counties, be 35 or younger by November, and earn no more than $35,000 per year.

Since then, Fisher and his bandmates — plus family and friends — have made a tradition of colonizing their own massive camp at the overnight festival.

As the chair of the nonprofit’s board of directors, Fisher points out that LEAF Community Arts 18

is made up of three main programs, including the widely known festival; arts education effort LEAF Schools and Streets; and LEAF International, which aims to preserve cultural traditions worldwide. One goal of LEAF’s current capital campaign, Fisher explains, is to rely less on the festival for funding all three divisions, so that event income “can be a layer on top of an already stable financing [situation] for the other programs.”

Fisher will further that cause later this week, when his band, Blue Dragons, plays a benefit show for the nonprofit. The show is doubly important for the musician, who will celebrate his 50th birthday with attendees.

“I just thought, ‘It’s my birthday.

I don’t really need anything. What’s

a good way to celebrate?’” he says.

“There are a lot of great causes out there, but LEAF is near to the heart.”

Before the Dragons unleash their funk- and Americana-inspired jams, fans can warm up with opening act Fritz Beer and the Crooked Beat, which “came to Asheville by way of New Orleans, courtesy of Hurricane Katrina,” according to an online bio.

Like Blue Dragons, they’ll bring a lively mix of originals and “choice covers,” Fisher says, also alluding to surprise guests and LEAF giveaways throughout the night.

“When we’re done,” Fisher adds, “it’s going to be a DJ Molly Parti funk fest.”

Combining yoga and physical therapy accelerates healing

By kate lunDquist kvlundo@gmail.com The intersection of yoga and physical therapy is a relatively new field, but the combination is springing up around Asheville. While physical therapy directly addresses an injury for rehabilitation, yoga therapy can further the healing, say several local practitioners.

“There is a growing body of evidence to support yoga’s therapeutic application for a wide variety of health conditions,” says libby hensley, manager of the yoga therapeutics pr ogram and certified physical therapist at Asheville Family Fitness. To offer clients a well-rounded, healing environment, she strives to integrate physical therapy and yoga therapy, noting that the practice’s staff training included sharing peer-reviewed articles on yoga’s benefits. “As [physical therapists], we always return to the importance of evidence-based practice, and with yoga therapy, that base of evidence is growing.”

Before teaching one-on-one and group sessions at Asheville Family Fitness, yoga therapist hilary drake completed a 300-hour yoga therapeutics program, led by Hensley, at the Asheville Yoga Center. The training included field trips to various community locations where participants teach yoga to limited/impaired populations. To enhance the study of anatomy, it also involved a trip to the cadaver lab at the Western Carolina University physical therapy department. “The energy and work of the clinic at Asheville Family Fitness feels unique, and we are reaching a population not necessarily served by more traditional yoga studios,” says Drake, who owns Thrive Yoga Therapy.

At Asheville Family Fitness, she teaches one-on-one and group therapy sessions, including yoga in chairs and wheelchairs. “The classes and sessions … are fully accessible and modified to serve every body, every condition, every limitation and to open our patients and clients to a world of possibility in terms of coping with life’s challenges,” says Drake.

A few years ago, doctors recommended physical therapy and another surgery that would fully fuse her spine where the rod doesn’t reach, she says. To prevent another operation, Rettig signed up for physical therapy at Asheville Family Fitness and has participated in back-strengthening yoga therapy classes. Her doctor says she no longer needs surgery.

“Before I started all this,” says Rettig, “I was very depressed because of the pain and feeling limited, and I

didn’t want to live on pain medicine.

And since all this yoga, I am a new person: I am not in pain, I built up my muscles ... and I feel good about my body,” she says.

“I thought I could never do these [yoga] poses or moves, but the more I come to class, the more I can move my body.”

A friend, nancy v. (who prefers not to use her last name), joined Rettig for group yoga therapy at Asheville Family Fitness. Nancy sustained a disabling injury during a nursing accident 10 years ago and says of fellow participants in chair yoga, “We are tired of taking pain medications. We came

to find cleaner ways to help lessen the pain and help strengthen the body without fear of reinjury. I had practiced regular floor yoga over 15 years ago but knew, with my shape and [the] injuries I have now, I couldn’t keep getting up and down off the floor without being completely embarrassed and in pain.”

Drake says, “There is a different mindset at [the center] around who yoga is for, and people who have found yoga here really get it. They are not trying to get their bodies into particular shapes, but rather they are hoping to find new coping mechanisms for chronic pain, stress,

anxiety and injury rehab. People come in to talk about functional issues, but we know they are not sleeping well and they are stressed, anxious or depressed. But now yoga therapy offers a toolbox for coping and managing challenges that come along with pain.” ferris fakhoury, owner of Anjali Hot Yatra and Physio Yoga Center, also combines yoga and physical therapy. A physical therapist since 1984, Fakhoury didn’t discover the benefits of the ancient practice until she was 45 years old, when she was introduced to heated vinyasa yoga.

As a cyclist and runner, Fakhoury says, she was drawn to the benefits of stretching in the heat and, through vinyasa, began to understand she was tight in the body where her muscles were weak.

A graduate in the master’s program at UNC Chapel Hill in human movement science, Fakhoury combines her love of yoga and physical therapy through PhysioTherapy, which uses yoga philosophy, breathing techniques and postures as primary modalities of treatment. The focus is on self-empowerment and self-healing rather than a prescription approach related to a diagnosis, she says.

Fakhoury does use an intake form in the evaluation of a patient, but, she emphasizes, it’s not meant to be diagnostic. “I talk with clients about not only the physical aspect of life but also the psychological and stress level in their lives,” she says.

“I watch them breathe, and we talk about the value of breath.”

Together, they develop a goal or multiple goals, similar to what certified yoga therapists would do.

Fakhoury primarily uses a physical therapy approach to address what limitations and strengths a client has, but she also uses yoga postures to address each area of concern.

One client, a 56-year-old retired medical administrator who asked to remain anonymous, had been sitting in the same way for 30 years, with one leg crossed over the other and his shoulder crunched to his ear, to hold a phone. His body had become like a cast that allowed almost no movement, says Fakhoury. After several sessions, he began to understand that his pelvis could move separately from his back. He lost 20 pounds and was able to get back to his love of gardening. jason scholder owns the Three Minute Egg, a Weaverville business that makes an egg-shaped yoga prop.

He created the prop to stretch his

back and believes that in order for the body to be healed, nerves must be pacified. Scholder has seen a crossover in practitioners who use his product, including physical therapists as well as yoga teachers. “One of the things that I would imagine yoga might address a bit more intensively than physical therapy is some of the other aspects of a trauma that either accompany the incident or the injured lifestyle,” he says.

Hundreds of physical therapists have bought Three Minute Eggs to integrate yoga into physical therapy, Scholder says. “In order to heal someone effectively on the physical level, it is important to also address any trauma that might be associated with the pain, and yoga is miraculously good at tapping into trauma.”

As an exhibitor at the Yoga Therapy Conference for the past few years, Scholder has encountered many physical therapists who are interested in integrating yoga into their practices. “One of the pieces physical therapists seem to be getting into is the mental calm yoga can provide,” he says. “Physical therapists have primarily been addressing the physical needs of the body. I think it is becoming more commonly believed that the two practices benefit one another.” X

Home Depot and Lowe’s to phase out neonic-treated plants we spent a lot of time talking to the Environmental Protection Agency,” says Jarvis. “We reached out to the Xerces Society; we had conversations with Friends of the Earth and other organizations. We’re just trying to understand exactly what the issue is and how much science there is surrounding the pros and cons.”

Eventually, Jarvis and his team concluded that neonicotinoids are either lethal or sublethal (meaning they cause some harm) to pollinators at certain levels. But there wasn’t a clear consensus as to what those levels are.

“We started trying to find out: Is it 100 parts per billion, is it 2 parts per billion, or is it somewhere in between? And does it differ with nectar versus pollen?” Jarvis explains.

“We continued to talk to the EPA, saying, ‘There’s got to be information you guys have out there.’ They were very helpful: They were going through the same process we were, trying to find those numbers.” a murky picture

Both The Home Depot and Lowe’s have begun phasing out the sale of flowering plants containing pesticides called neonicotinoids, which have been linked to declining populations of bees and other pollinators.

“Right now, 80 percent of our flowering plants are neonic-free,

and we plan to completely phase out the use of neonics on our live goods by the end of 2018,” says matthew harrigan, Home Depot’s corporate communications and public relations manager. “But in the meantime, we’re one of the few retailers that have started requiring the suppliers to label neonic-treated plants, so that customers who believe that neonics are impacting the bee population won’t unknowingly purchase those plants.”

The decision to phase out these flowering plants was made about two

months ago, Harrigan explains. And though the company listens to the feedback from activist groups, he continues, Home Depot ultimately makes these kinds of big decisions based on its own research and analysis.

The company’s environmental team has been a hive of activity, conducting research on neonics for the past 2 1/2 years, notes ron jarvis, vice president of merchandising and environmental innovation.

“We started out by talking to our suppliers, talking to our growers, and

Meanwhile, tests conducted by Jarvis and his team found that concentrations of both nectar and pollen in the flowers Home Depot sells averaged a meager 4 to 5 ppb.

That, he says, is “much, much lower than any of the consensus out there on what the sublethal levels would be. I don’t think we were having any effects on the pollinators prior to us pulling out of it, but not being able to get a consensus and clear direction, we decided just to continue the pull-down of the product and then set a time frame to be out of it completely.”

The only exceptions, says Harrigan, would be if state or federal regulations required treating plants with neonics, or if undisputed science eventually proves that the levels on the retailer’s live goods don’t harm pollinators.

Last year, the White House announced that it would be work-

ing with the EPA on new steps to promote the health of bees and other pollinators.

In 2014, beekeepers nationwide reported losing about 40 percent of honeybee colonies, according to an article on the White House’s website titled “Announcing New Steps to Promote Pollinator Health.” That substantial loss threatened both beekeepers’ livelihoods and the pollination services bees provide. varroa mite a bigger problem But rick coor, president of the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association, maintains that a pest called the varroa mite, not pesticides, is the greatest threat to bees.

“I was a beekeeper as a teenager in the 1970s,” says Coor. “It was easy in those days: There were wild bee colonies in old buildings and hollow trees. All those bees are gone now, not from pesticides but due to the parasitic varroa mite.

This natural enemy arrived in the New World in the late ’80s and is credited with killing all the wild bees. The varroa mite,” he says, “is the No. 1 enemy of the honeybee above all other forces, natural and man-made.”

Coor also points out that bees are only one of many species of pollinators. “They are very efficient pollinators, due to the fact that they’re social insects. One colony can produce a field force of tens of thousands of individuals, compared to a bumblebee colony of maybe 100 members at the peak of the season,” he explains. “Monoculture of crops negates that impact, however.

A small plot of vegetables can be greatly impacted by a colony of honeybees, but how about 100 acres or more of squash or melons?

“I once heard a very informative presentation by a researcher at N.C. State who’d studied the pollinators on a blueberry farm. There were scores of different pollinators that visited the plants, as demonstrated by an extensive bug collection the lady had assembled.”

Pesticides, notes Coor, kill many insect species. But that’s only one piece of a much larger and more complex picture. “If all the pesticides were gone tomorrow and their traces vanished, the bees would still suffer from monoculture — an agricultural practice that affords a bee forage in only a short period each season. They would

suffer from loss of habitat, highways and homes; suffer from modern forestry, where deciduous trees are cut and replaced with pines which offer no resources to a bee; suffer from inbreeding due to high demand; suffer most of all from the varroa mite, a vector for viruses and diseases.” culture shift The pesticide problem, Coor maintains, also reflects a change in the culture of farming.

“Once I was invited to participate in an open discussion about bees and farmers and commercial pesticide users,” he recalls. “At least one commercial nurseryman made it clear that someone who places a beehive near his business is knowingly placing the bees at risk, because [the nurseryman] isn’t obligated to change his spraying practices.”

Also in the room, continues Coor, were a few men in their 30s, thirdand fourth-generation farmers who nonetheless “made it clear that they were farming to make money and pay bills.” These men, he says, felt they had the right “to spray any pesticide they saw fit.”

“I left the room wondering whether those young farmers realized that their fathers before them, who tilled the same ground, were not annually coating it with deadly chemicals, and that chemical farming only came of age in the mid-1900s.”

Many farms, notes Coor, “especially in the East, have been continuously cultivated since the 1700s. What if this land had been continuously sprayed with poisons for 250 years?

That’s what we’re headed for. But in the end, what’s being done to our environment, to our bees, is not against the law.”

At the same time, continues Coor, “I caution against any celebration of sorts, because we’re speaking of one classification of pesticides that the two retailers are banning. That still leaves a vast array of poisons to use.

We should not confuse progress with public relations, but maybe the retailers are hearing the noise.” X

And it’s easy to forget about some of the smaller cities and towns around Asheville that have a lot to offer as well. Less than an hour’s drive south, and just down the road from DuPont State Forest, Brevard is a popular stomp-

ing ground for hikers, campers and kayakers. But there’s also plenty to occupy the casual daytripper.

The quaint downtown is picturesque.

Historic stone buildings and brick sidewalks line the streets, and even the alleyways are packed with shops, restaurants and pubs. On a cool Tuesday evening, the sidewalks are sparsely dotted with a mix of tourists and locals, rushing off to dinner or drinks, or merely heading home.

My guides, sarah baker and Karen pucino, exemplify Brevard’s changing face. Sarah, a Colorado transplant, is a paralegal who went to college here and wound up sticking when her husband,

aaron baker, landed a job as the marketing manager at Oskar Blues. Karen, originally from Maryland, has a similar story: She came to town when her spouse, david morris, was hired as the brewery’s laboratory manager.

We begin our tour at Oskar Blues.

In 2012, the Colorado-based brewery added an Eastern branch, which now supplies beer to 22 states and employs over 40 people. An expansion is in the works, and over a newly released pint of white stout in the tasting room, Aaron explains that the Brevard location will soon service half the United States.

Meanwhile, the brewery itself draws a steady stream of visitors — a significant boost to tourism in a little town like Brevard, the population of which slides in just under 8,000.

Back downtown, there’s a jazz trio playing at Jaime’s Creole Brasserie.

The dulcet saxophone reverberates through the dining room, and on the table there’s a nice spread of bone marrow topped with raspberries drizzled with a bourbon bordelaise. Although Brevard College accounts for nearly 10 percent of the town’s population, notes Sarah, this isn’t really a college town, due to the tourist traffic and other parttime residents. Just then, a distractingly sexy cassoulet of rabbit, Southern beans and Benton’s bacon with ginger chowchow arrives — so distracting, in fact, that it almost overshadows the turtle soup. Not to mention the better-thanexpected cocktail list: The Ole Slack Sazerac (Bulleit Rye, Herbsaint and hibiscus bitters) is definitely worth a sip or three.

New Orleans transplant jaime hernandez opened Jaime’s in October 2014. Packing up his crew at Pork & Pie in Marshall, Hernandez moved from one small dot on a map to another. But where Pork & Pie had barely a dozen tables, the sprawling Jaime’s, with private dining rooms and a patio, seats over 150. Leaning heavily on Creole classics, the menu seems to detour to include Neapolitan pizza, but when you have a wood-fired oven, why wouldn’t you? Also notable is the cochon de lait, a whole roasted, boneless pig that serves 12 and must be ordered two weeks in advance.

By ThE BOOK Around the corner and down the alley sits Downtown Chocolates.

When george williams and his partners were planning the shop, Williams had no idea how to make chocolate. So when his partners pulled out at the last minute because “it wasn’t God’s plan for their lives,” Williams explains, he had to learn fast. You’d never know it, though, from the varied spread of intricately crafted treats on offer: truffles, caramels and ganache galore. “No one taught him how to do this: He learned it all from books!” exclaims Sarah.

Across the alley at The Square Root, chef adam wilson has prepared a menu sampler for us. Wilson’s background (he’s a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta and a former Ritz-Carlton chef in Atlanta and Palm Beach, Fla.) is readily apparent in both presentation and flavors.

Southern staples are deconstructed and draped across the plate: hushpuppies with pimento cheese; tomatobasil bisque with onion jam; a solitary scallop perched atop a butternut squash-and-bacon risotto with sage

brown butter sauce, crispy corn and leeks; chipotle barbecued osso bucco served with apple-and-cabbage slaw and Parmesan-and-Gouda grits. For dessert, there’s Irish coffee creme brulee with cinnamon whipped cream, a flourless chocolate torte and powdered Nutella with wild berry sorbet, each one drawn across the plate like a piece of modern art. Good, thick, rich flavors.

“This isn’t even giving you the breadth of what he does,” says Sarah. “He does a really awesome curry as well.” The international menu, I’m told, is a nod to Wilson’s wife and business partner, a well-traveled South African expat and accomplished cook.

of libations he’s prepared for the night, which seems to change as ingredients run out, forcing him to cook up something new. I try a variation on a tequila sunrise that uses Anderson Valley’s Blood Orange Gose. Karen’s drink involves flaming marshmallows, and the New Year’s menu includes pudding shots and sorbet Champagne floats. Clearly, this is Oatmeal’s world, and we’re all just tourists in it.

And as the lights begin to blur and the voices in the crowded bar wash over us like waves on a hazy shore, I think about how much I’m still missing. Bracken Mountain Bakery is known for its pastries, and the venerable Cardinal DriveIn is famous for hosting hot rod shows. But those are for another day, and happily, Brevard is just a stone’s throw away. X

Working chefs already have a pretty full plate, but that doesn’t stop many Asheville culinarians from making efforts on the side to promote and enhance the local food community and help others. Whether working with area nonprofit organizations

or collaborating with other industry professionals and farmers, a number of Asheville chefs are making an impact in our community in more ways than one. liSTEN uP! Hungry for food talk? A relatively new food podcast, “AVL Food Fans,” is a burgeoning series where food writer stu helm and chef joe scully of the Corner Kitchen and Chestnut banter with locals about what’s going on in the Asheville restaurant scene.

The discussions dish about anything food-related, both locally and farther afield. Since the series launched in June, topics have touched on tipping, front-of-house versus back-of-house work, cheesecake, coffee, microgreens — pretty much anything is fair game.

“It all started when Stu Helm had a complaint about one of my restaurants,” Scully says. “He wrote about it, and when I met him, I called him out on it. After we talked for a bit, he said, ‘You know, we should do a show.’ The rest is history.”

The podcasts air twice a month and have quickly developed a devoted fan base. To date, they’ve had nearly 6,000 listens.

“Our primary goal is to serve the whole community — farmers, servers, chefs, educators, food lovers and more,” Helm says. “Ultimately, we’d like to see the podcast spread outside of the area to promote different food scenes throughout the country.

Asheville certainly has an amazing mix of food culture, and it’s a great place to kick off this project. I’m excited to see what happens next.”

FOCuSiNg ON EduCATiON The Biltmore Co. sends its chefs out into the community as part of the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project’s Growing Minds Farm to School Program.

Several Biltmore chefs have led ASAP events called Taste Tests, which are essentially cooking workshops staged in local classrooms using seasonal ingredients as a way to positively impact children’s health and education.

“I’ve been in the classroom during past taste tests, and the kids really get excited to have chefs in their classrooms all dressed in their white coats and introducing new foods,” says marissa jamison, public relations manager at Biltmore.

As executive chef of Biltmore’s Lioncrest, Deerpark and Biltmore Catering, Kirk fiore is participating in an upcoming scheduled Taste Test. Fiore has two young children and is passionate about passing on healthy eating habits and introducing local foods to the next generation.

“I’m excited about this opportunity,” Fiore says. “It’s important to educate children, who, in turn, educate their parents.”

There’s also a spring garden series planned where chefs will conduct cooking demonstrations in some local school gardens. “While I understand and appreciate that schools have limited food budgets to work with, if we can help them to integrate some ingredients and strategies without up-costing the cost of a meal, we’ve made an impact,” says Fiore.

The mission of ASAP’s Growing Minds program aligns with Biltmore’s values — founders George and Edith Vanderbilt not only ran the estate as a sustainable farm, but they were very involved in educational efforts for workers on the estate and other Western North Carolina residents. To continue that legacy of commitment to agriculture and education, Biltmore recently became an official sponsor of the program. cathy cleary, co-founder of the FEAST program (fast, easy, affordable, sustainable, tasty), is another chef who firmly believes that all children deserve to eat healthy food every day. FEAST facilitates that through hands-on cooking and gardening classes.

“Kids who don’t have access to fresh fruits and vegetables on a regular basis are less likely to want to eat them because they are not familiar,” says Cleary, who was an original owner of the West End Bakery and author of the West End Bakery Cookbook. “When a kid participates in the process, they are so much more likely to taste things and more likely to enjoy the food the next time they encounter it. As an organization, our biggest accomplishments happen every time a FEAST student eats a healthy snack that they made and says, ‘That’s good!’”

FEAST works closely with local chefs for its annual fundraising event, Feasting for FEAST. Chefs and restaurateurs who have supported the organization year after year include: april moon from Sunnypoint Café; dan and jael rattigan from the French Broad Chocolate Lounge; john and julie stehling from Early Girl Eatery and King Daddy’s Chicken and Waffles; and Katie and elizabeth button of Curate and Nightbell.

He’s traveled to Capitol Hill numerous times to fight for transparent labeling of genetically modified foods, funding and guidelines for the National School Lunch Program, and more.

Dissen says his quest to find the best local ingredients for his menu at The Market Place led him to do an in-depth study of how the food chain works and eventually to his food policy outreach efforts. “We found that when we started down this path to learn more about food, that we’ve realized that we have a commitment to sustainable practices

— both in how we operate our business and how we interact with our community and beyond,” he says.

“Every time I get the chance to go to D.C. and speak with our congressmen and women, it’s a great opportunity to share our voice from the people here in Asheville and let our legislators know what we believe in,” Dissen adds.

Currently, the chef is working on a major advocacy project scheduled for early February. He will host representatives from the James Beard House and its partner, the Chefs’ Action Network, along with 20 of the best chefs in the Southeast and national media outlets for a twoday culinary salon in Asheville that focuses on how the renaissance of Appalachian food, heritage and culture is playing a role in the national food conversation.

“We will ... create a dialogue that will include how outreach, advocacy and sustainability issues are at the center of our regional food culture,” Dissen says, calling the gathering “one of the most exciting events that I have had the chance to be a part of.” X

ASAP goes on the air As many Ashevilleans are finalizing the transition from lazy Sunday to workweek, Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project’s Jen Nathan Orris is already mic’d up. Since November, she’s been serving as host and producer of ASAP radio series “Growing Local,” which airs on WNCW each Monday at 8:45 a.m. and “explores innovative local farms, food buyers and community partners to document how they’re working to improve our region’s food system,” she says.

“Growing Local’s” two-pronged mission is “to encourage the public to actively participate in the local food community and to let them listen in on farmers, chefs and food buyers as they work to bring healthy food to our tables,” Orris explains, calling Ashevilleans “uniquely dedicated to local food.”

Orris’ program broadcasts throughout WNCW’s coverage area (Charlotte to Greenville, S.C.; most areas of WNC and east Tennessee) during breaks in National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” — a popular show that airs around the nation and is often supplemented with local programming.

generous to have offered these peak listening slots, which she fills with a combination of 90-second “radio essays” plus four-minute feature stories.

While the essays range from the practical (i.e. finding local food during the winter) to the cerebral (how do we know if food is really local?), Orris’ longer feature stories will aim to “transport listeners to places where local food is in action.” She says all segments will tie into the ongoing work of ASAP’s Local Food Research Center, which studies social, economic, environmental and other factors of agriculture and consumer behavior as they relate to food-system change.

“We visited a free-range turkey farm for Thanksgiving and [held] a school taste test where many students tried local sweet potatoes for the first time,” Orris says, citing recent story examples. “The voices of students and the sounds of the taste test in action provided an experiential element, while the last 30 seconds offered ways for the public to participate in future school taste tests.”

A former editor and current contributor to multiple publications, Orris calls radio a “sonic journey” and “a brilliant medium for breaking down complex topics and presenting them in ways that engage people on many levels.”

Chase, co-author of Drink the Harvest and author of Eat Your Yard. Beyond the south sLope Burial is planning a large-scale brewing expansion and more for its new 1.4-acre property Burial Beer Co. has been teasing a kitchen expansion for months — scaling up the Salt & Smoke offerings from former Bull & Beggar chef josiah mcgaughy — but it turns out owners jess and doug reiser have had much more than that up their sleeves.

On Wednesday, Jan. 6, Burial announced the purchase of a 1.4acre property near Biltmore Village where the Reisers and head brewer tim gormley plan to repurpose the six 1920s-era buildings on the premises into a 20-barrel brewhouse with 60-barrel fermenters, a restaurant (scheduled for 2017), taproom and more over the next few years.

“The growth is something that we always anticipated,” Jess Reiser says. “We thought, initially, that we’d be brewing on the 1-barrel pilot system [at 40 Collier Ave.] forever because we didn’t own the building. Once we were able to purchase it, we wanted to fit a bigger system in because we were struggling to keep up beer-wise.

“We couldn’t fit another tank without going into the taproom,” she laughs. “So, we always knew there would be a second location.”

Though the property is far larger than Burial’s first home, Reiser says the new place will carry on the old vibe.

“I think people can come onto the premises [at Collier] and feel like they’ve stumbled upon something,” she says. “[The new property] is similar in a sense. It’s in a neighborhood that’s up-and-coming, people are visiting, but it’s still not on a main drag. It’s off the beaten path.”

Reiser says they were initially looking at farms outside Buncombe County for the new location, but they’re excited about the new space.

Located at 16 Shady Oak Drive, the property was built in the 1920s and purchased by the U.S. government as part of a New Deal program in the ’30s, when it was used as housing for the Civilian Conservation Corps.

The property has remained mostly dormant since then, but Burial plans to revitalize it — even securing the original blueprints for a point of reference.

6,000-square-foot building, which Reiser says they will convert into a “lounge of sorts.”

“It’ll definitely be a different type of taproom,” she says. “It’s all wood.

It has a very lodge-y feel. You can see all the cubbies where the men used to keep their belongings. It’s really cool.

“We haven’t really figured out the liquor component yet,” she continues.

“We certainly don’t want it to be exclu-

sive for 21-and-overs, so we’re going to have to figure all of that out.”

The first building to get the Burial overhaul will be the brewhouse, which they plan to have dialed in by May. The original system at the Collier Avenue location will be dedicated to entirely new wild and sour brews with a new brand under the Burial umbrella.

She says they’re still kicking around ideas, but the new brand is likely to be much less colorful and less illustration-focused than the current lineup.

With the second brewhouse, they expect to eclipse 10,000 barrels annually within the first year (including 1,600 annually from Collier), then ramp up to a 16,000-barrel, selfimposed cap.

“Our goal with growth isn’t to be giant,” Reiser says. “I hope I am met with the decision to expand again, and I hope we say no thank you to the beer market.

“The three of us and our employees want to stay intimate and tightknit,” she continues. “We want to have a really vibrant internal culture, and we want to have relationships with the people who come to drink our beer, and we want to maintain a quality product.

Not that you can’t do those things on a larger scale — it’s just that much harder.”

Burial will continue to use Land of the Sky for its canning for now, but eventually plans to add a canning line to the property — and the company will need it as it expands distribution to Georgia, South Carolina and beyond.

Amid all the expansion talk, Reiser reflects on Burial’s humble beginnings with emotion in her eyes.

“We were just so excited to open our doors that first day,” she recalls. “Each milestone has been very surreal. I’m so thankful for the support — the following. [This is] what I hoped for. It’s definitely meaningful. The comments and support from regulars we have …

they are relationships I certainly don’t want to lose sight of as we expand and grow.”

The kitchen at the original location is still coming, too. McGaughy has been hard at work outfitting a food trailer to park outside the Collier Avenue taproom, which Reiser says is going to be incorporated into the building using a parking platform where customers can order from the back patio.

“I first met Josiah when I was bartending and lost his credit card,” Reiser recalls. “He had just moved here … and he was so nice and amazing about it.”

From there, they eventually formed a partnership that resulted in the Salt & Smoke pop-up meals five days a week. Up until now, McGaughy has had to cook for donations only, but that will change with the new setup.

“I think that, although potentially not ideal from a financial standpoint, [the donation system] enabled them to connect with people,” Reiser says. “Our regulars have become their regulars.”

Local duo plans fundraiser to reach international blues competition

By Bill kopp bill@musoscribe.com Vocalist peggy ratusz has long been one of Asheville’s leading blues personalities, carrying a torch for the century-old musical form. Her latest musical endeavor (with the help of musical collaborator aaron price) involves the upcoming 32nd annual International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis, Tenn., Tuesday, Jan. 26 to Saturday, Jan. 30. In the runup to that event, Ratusz and Price have scheduled an intimate performance (only 50 tickets will be sold) at Isis Restaurant & Music Hall Thursday, Jan. 14. The show will promote their efforts and help defray some of the costs of the trip.

“Affiliate blues societies around the world hold regional competitions, and they adhere to many of the rules and guidelines that The Blues Foundation has for the international competition in Memphis,” says Ratusz. Nearly a decade ago, she learned about the International Blues Challenge from then-Asheville-based singer-songwriter eliza lynn, who encouraged Ratusz to enter a regional event that was held in Greensboro. The competition was rigorous. “You’ve got three judges and a timekeeper,” Ratusz says. “At the regional level, groups compete against eight to 15 other bands. In the solo and duo categories, there are fewer contestants. But when you get to the international level, there are 80, 90 other bands.”

Ratusz didn’t win on that first try, but when she returned with a band the following year, she took first place in Greensboro. “We learned a lot,” she says. In the years that followed, Ratusz worked with guitarist lee devico, then of Gas House Mouse, putting together the Asheville-based Southern Fried Blues Society. Three Asheville blues outfits — encouraged by the society — went on to win regional challenges, and Ratusz started attending the annual international competitions in Memphis. “They’re so much fun. My husband and I always go, whether I’m competing or not,” she says.

Ratusz says that she’s never had a band for the competitions: “I’ve

Photo by Frank Zipperer always just pulled from Asheville’s stable of awesome players.” But to compete in the regional 2015 Blues Challenge held in Charlotte, she needed a partner, so she teamed up with in-demand local keyboardist Price.

They billed themselves as the Bygone Blues Duo. “They wanted some originals,” Ratusz says. “So I got crack-a-lackin’ on some bygone era-influenced songs.”

She collaborated closely with Price,

who says, “Peggy’s [style] templates can be an already-existing song, or simply a mood paired with a tempo and a general style. Song arrangement entails coming up with the most impactful intro and ending. Everything in the middle is basically improvised.”

Price characterizes his role as “add[ing] backbone, ribs and a fancy wig to the face with which Peggy presents the music” and says that he endeavors to “stay out of the way of

Peggy’s voice.” The musical pairing works: Ratusz’s vocal and Price’s stride piano (a distinctive style that’s a variant of ragtime) give the duo a distinctive sound, one that won them the top prize at the competition held at Charlotte’s Double Door Inn. “The Double Door has a rich blues history; I felt like I was back in the Wild West playing in some saloon,” says Price. Winning there meant that the Bygone Blues Duo earned the

right to go to Memphis to compete against international acts.

But travel expenses for the weeklong event in Tennessee are substantial, so the duo booked the upcoming Isis performance to raise funds and create more buzz about the competition. Last year Ratusz produced a pair of shows at that venue called Women in Blues History. The standing-room-only performances led the audience on a musical and educational journey from 1920 to the present. “It really resonated with people,” she says. The set spotlighted music by “everyone from Lil Johnson to Susan Tedeschi.” That approach informs the presentation of the Bygone Blues Duo set as well.

Local blues stars AL Coffee & Da Grind made it to the semifinals in last year’s International Blues Challenge, and a few other North Carolina acts have reached the level of competing in Memphis. But none has made it to the top three, which is where Ratusz and Price have set their sights.

Ratusz reflects on the state of the local blues scene. “It always feels like it’s doing well when you’re in a roomful of blues lovers,” she says.

But she wonders aloud about the health of the local blues scene. She even wrote a recent essay for WNC Woman titled, “The Ups and Downs of the Blues.” Yet she strikes a hopeful tone, saying, “As long as people come and listen, then it’s not dead.” al “coffee” mcdaniel, for example, hosts a successful blues jam every week at Tressa’s, and weekly blues jams at Westville Pub and the (nowclosed) Emerald Lounge have drawn good crowds. And with Ratusz and Price having a shot at international fame, Western North Carolina-based blues is poised to remain vital and relevant now and into the future. X

Rare is the person who could truthfully claim her life has gone according to plan. But musician and writer freda love smith, author of Red Velvet Underground: A Rock Memoir, with Recipes, says, “I’ve mostly just thought my life has been a lot of chaos and a lot of changes in direction.” Her book deftly stitches together family life, stories from her stints as the drummer in The Blake Babies, Antenna and The Mysteries of Life, and personal food-related memories.

“Everybody wants that, whether they’re a rock drummer or a mom or whatever disparate lives they’re trying to make sense of. You want to feel like there’s some order.”

Smith’s resume is varied, including baker and yoga teacher as well as a lecturer at the School of Communications at Northwestern University. She holds an MFA in writing and, though she’d published short stories, knew she wanted to attempt a book. When Smith’s eldest son, jonah, was in his last year of high school, she decided to give him a series of cooking lessons so he’d be self-sufficient when he left home.

Those tutorials sparked the idea for a

prose piece, though originally it was much more linear. And, while there was precedent for a memoir with recipes (Elizabeth Bard’s Picnic in Provence, Shoba Narayan’s Monsoon Diary and an entire Goodreads list dedicated to “books shelved as cookbook-memoir”), “the cooking lessons with Jonah linked me to the way food was central to both of our stories,” Smith says.

Much of the chapter “Macaroni and Cheese and Other Road Food” waxes rhapsodic about Athens, Ga., and, specially, that town’s vegetarian restaurant The Grit. While Smith recounts the importance of healthy food while on tour, she also remi-

nisces about staying in the home of lynda stipe (sister of R.E.M.’s lead singer) and eating blueberry pie at The Grit that was “not just good, it was perfect.”

In the book, Smith adapts that dessert recipe along with down-home favorites like stir fry, roast chicken, and “Zirque’s split-pea and squash soup,” as prepared by her jazz-musician brother. It turns out that Zirque bonner and his wife, louise sharpe, are recent transplants to Asheville.

Sharpe is the owner and founder of Lulu’s Chocolate and will be part of Smith’s Malaprop’s event, sharing samples of her chocolate.

Lulu is not the author’s only brush with fame. As a narrator, Smith is down to earth, but Red Velvet Underground has plenty of starstudded moments. The Blake Babies included a young julianna hatfield (who offers a glowing endorsement on the book’s jacket) and, briefly, a pre-Lemonheads evan dando. But the real VIPs in this memoir are Smith’s sons.

Jonah gave the book his stamp of approval, the writer says, and though now in his 20s, it was strange for him to revisit those cooking lessons from

a few years ago. “It was an interesting reminder of how different the passing of time is for someone of his age and someone of my age,” says Smith. One of the important outcomes of the memoir — and she discusses this desire in her writing — is that both boys now cook.

Younger son henry who, as an eighth-grader, initiated his own cooking lessons, “is at ease in the kitchen in a way that I so enjoy,” says Smith. “He frequently makes meals for himself and every now and then will make something for the whole family.” In the chapter “Let Him Make Cake,” Smith points out that kitchen duties all too often fall to women, even in the most liberated of households. Faced with the example of a friend who always baked her own birthday cake, the writer decided that her sons would know that skill, among others.

That chapter, Smith says, has garnered many comments. “It wasn’t something I wanted to be shrill about, but it was something I wanted to be honest about,” she says.

“There’s still progress to be made.”

Outside the kitchen, Smith’s own life has progressed. She’s returned to music as her schedule allows.

She and her husband, jake smith, regrouped The Mysteries of Life; the band just released the EP Bad Advice on Bandcamp. She’s played with singer-songwriter robbie fulks — including a show after Red Velvet Underground was released that included songs about food and onstage cooking. And most recently she performed with an all-woman supergroup (including tanya donelly of Throwing Muses).

That Boston-based benefit concert, seemingly custom-made for Smith, is aptly named Hot Stove Cool Music. X

what songwriting topics especially appealed to you in creating i’ll Be Yours?

After all the incremental progress, the album probably sounds a whole lot different to us than to someone with fresh ears. Looking back on it, there seem to be a number of songs about devotion in the face of hopelessness — sort of a sinking ship’s captain’s mentality. That’s where the album — and the [lead single] — gets its title. I’ll Be Yours will be out in the spring. please tell me about “American Epic” (a four-hour prime-time PBS/BBC special produced by jack white, robert redford and t bone burnett, featuring nas, elton john, alabama shakes and willie nelson that debuts in the spring) and your role in the program.

A friend of ours — a record collector and an expert on old-time music — recommended us to a filmmaker who was looking for a modern band who could play the old stuff.

Mountain Xpress: are you or any of your bandmates a fan of the f/x tv show with which you share a name? patrick ferris: Not that I know of, but I hear it’s great. what’s your history with asheville?

We played a show at The Orange Peel [in June 2011]. We had a great time in Asheville. We were traveling with ryan bingham at the time, who was generous enough to invite us along on two of his tours. In fact, Ryan is one of the most generous people I think I’ve ever met. are all four of you la natives?

Two of us grew up in LA, the other two in San Francisco. how would you describe the la roots-rock music scene? how does it compare to other cities where that style thrives, and why is la a good fit for the band?

Anything you’re interested in you can probably find in Los Angeles. We

met one another through a shared devotion to pre-war American music: country blues, string band music, etc. The greatest old-time musicians of this generation came out of LA — Jerron Paxton, The California Feetwarmers, Frank Fairfield — and we get to play with all of them. After a long period of, as I say, devotion to old blues and country music, I started to dream about what it might be like to play original, modern music with these people who felt the same way I did about old music, who knew how to play it authentically. when you play shows in appalachia and the south in general, do you feel a special kinship with the audiences or the area? and have these experiences tempted you to relocate to, say, austin or nashville — or is it good for the band to operate outside of these hotspots?

We’ve been tempted. These are not easy places to leave. Coming home from tour is typically accompanied by a numbness and longing for the places we’ve left behind.

how did playing at reese witherspoon’s wedding come about? did you play other songs there as well, or did you get to mingle as a guest once your cover of bob dylan’s “make you feel my love” was over?

We played a couple sets. We had played a party for her once before.

Still, we didn’t know whose wedding it was until we showed up. you four have backed up nick cave, tim robbins and lucinda williams. again, what are the stories behind how those opportunities arose?

We played a concert for charity in downtown LA. We played a new song of ours and then backed up some of the other artists that night. It was a privilege. to what do you attribute the americans’ success in making these notable connections?

We’ve been lucky. considering your pedigree and history, i was surprised to see that the grey eagle show is a free one.

It’s been a while since we played in Asheville. A free show is a good way to find out if anyone remembers who we are. other than the nationwide tour and releasing i’ll Be Yours — two significant undertakings, no doubt — what else do the americans have in store for 2016?

the write stuff Author Jake Bible hosts a group focused on the business of books You’ve written a novel. It took years of hard work and countless missed parties, but it’s done — and it’s fabulous. Now all you need is to get it published and into the hands of readers. Just one little question: How? “The work doesn’t stop once you’re published,” says local author jake bible. “It starts after you’re published.” He should know — Bible has penned works of sci-fi and horror fiction for adults, young adults and middle-grade readers.

He’s written screenplays, invented the Drabble Novel and hosts the “Writing In Suburbia” podcast. The business end of writing, says Bible, “is extremely hard, but we’ve all been there.”

Inspired by The Writers Coffeehouse launched by New York Times best-selling author jonathan maberry, Bible decided to start a similar gathering in Asheville.

Maberry’s group formed when the author noticed how people would linger for an hour after a workshop on literary craft to talk about pitching, selling and marketing their work. Bible contacted Maberry both to get the Ghost Road Blues author’s OK and to connect the monthly Asheville meeting — which begins Monday, Jan. 18, at Malaprop’s — to the many other Writers Coffeehouses that have spun off Maberry’s original event.

“You check your ego at the door, and anyone is welcome,” Bible says of the gathering. “The entire point is to get area writers together to talk about the business. With The Writers Coffeehouse, we can get all these different careers and personalities and experiences together at one time … to get rid of a lot of the myths that are out there.”

The meetings provide a platform to share knowledge. A writer interested in social media can learn from others who’ve found success using those tools, while authors who hate Facebook or don’t want to tweet can pick up tips from those who’ve mastered other skill sets. But craft, unless it’s relevant to business (such as if first-person narrative sells better than third-person), won’t be dis-

“I’ve found most writers love to help other writers of all levels,” says Bible. As for the idea that the publishing world is competitive, the first Malaprop’s meeting will address how the field is also wideopen. “Readers don’t pit authors against authors,” says Bible, and neither will the coffeehouse. “We want to have people feel good when they walk out.”

The gathering is an opportunity for newcomers to learn from some of the best writers around. Western North Carolina is home to copywriters and best-selling fiction superstars alike. But isolation is a problem local writers face, as is a lack of publishing industry support.

“Except for the YA community, who are pretty tightknit, it’s all over the place,” says Bible. “I’m hoping connections will be made at The Writers Coffeehouse. I’m hoping some infrastructure will be sparked.”

The DuPont Brothers An invigorating joint performance in late 2012 compelled Sam and Zack DuPont to consolidate their solo efforts, pursuing with full force the artistic synergy they’d paid visits to before. Zack admires his brother’s ability to distill emotions through songwriting, calling him “a wild horse that bucks and sprints” and a natural focal point for attention. Sam, meanwhile, characterizes Zack as an egoless ally to the listener, one who “brings a quiet and focused confidence to each show” and draws talent out of collaborators. While this scene from HOMME’s first music video (a cover of Julee Cruise’s “Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart”) illustrates the duo’s ability to build ominously intimate moments from minimal inputs, the women’s original material reveals an equal aptitude for rock’s grittier side. LukEWarm Horror FLaPDooDLE rated pg-13 tHE Story: a girl searches for her twin sister in Japan’s notorious “Suicide Forest.” tHE LoWDoWn: Whether or not the aokigahara Forest prompts people to commit suicide, chances are good that this first release of the new year will put you to sleep.

The first film of 2016 should have been shot before it exited the paddock.

Not only would it have been merciful, it would have saved me from 90 minutes of sheer tedium. Contrary to popular belief, a horror film can be many things — scary, creepy, atmospheric, funny, subversive, clever, silly, campy, ridiculously over-the-top — and succeed on any of those levels or a combination of them. Jason Zada’s The Forest is none of those. Instead, it’s just plain boring.

It’s almost impossible to critique for the simple reason that there’s so little to it.

The film (which astonishingly took

three people to write) starts off by establishing its ho-hum premise that “good” twin Sara (Natalie Dormer) has become convinced her “troubled” twin Jess (also Dormer, who has quite enough trouble playing one character) has met with some misfortune in Japan. As luck (and convenient scripting) would have it, Jess has disappeared in Aokigahara Forest, a popular destination for suicides. (This much is true.) But Sara knows that Jess is alive, because she has one of those psychic connections so common to identical twins in popular fiction. Naturally — against the grim warnings of absolutely everyone — she hops on a plane to Japan to prowl the forest for Jess. (In movies, people always have enough money to do this sort of thing.)

That’s the set-up. What follows amounts to not much. The movie futzes around for a while, then rewards us with dream sequences, flashbacks and the odd “Boogie! Boogie! Boogie!” shock effect of unusually low wattage.

That’s pretty much it. Once the film actually makes it to the forest, the only thing that changes is the location, and the movie starts playing a completely botched game of “Truth or Illusion”

with us. The problem — aside from the movie’s inability to make you give a damn about any of these paper doll characters — is that the film itself doesn’t seem to have a clue what is or isn’t true. There’s some hooey about repressed childhood memories that add up to very little, and a bleak ending that I guess is meant to be disturbing. It isn’t. The sheer relief of knowing it’s finally over outweighs all else.

Normally, I try to find some scrap of something in a movie that is somehow redeeming. That’s hard to do with The Forest. The performances are pretty much strictly of the kind that separates TV stars from movie stars. That is, watching them on TV is one thing, actually paying to see them in a theater is quite another. The direction is ... let’s call it uninspired.

I can, however, note that it is largely in focus. It might rate a place on lists of awful movies for 2016, except that no one is likely to remember it two weeks from now, let alone a full year later. Rated PG-13 for disturbing thematic content and images.

2015 at the movies The year’s best

The 2015 movie year was a rich and somewhat strange one. It was rich in that there were a lot of good — even great or near-great — films, but it was strange in that its peaks didn’t soar. Apart from Clouds of Sils Maria (and even it haunted me more than it did anything else)

and the late-in-the-day U.S. (barely) release of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s magnificent The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet (which I’d actually seen in 2014), I was left wishing for that transcendent feeling of true excite-

1. youth. This was it. Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth was the film that transported me as no other did this year, though a few came close. It’s a richly layered, densely textured work in which much is touched on and nothing is wasted. Nothing happens that is arbitrary. When all is said and done, everything is beautifully accounted for, yet an air of mystery remains.

2. clouds of sils maria. Olivier Assayas’ Clouds of Sils Maria came out pretty early in the year (last April) and may have been displaced in a lot of minds, I fear. That’s too bad. While it didn’t get me as high as Youth, this wonderfully hypnotic film about aging (and our preconceived notions of it), the nature of identity and the relation of art and reality is a truly special creation. And, yes, Kristen Stewart is terrific in it.

3. the hateful eight. Going into The Hateful Eight, I told my wife, “It’s going to be long, it may be slow getting started, it will be very talky and violent and bloody and filled with swearing and at least one racial epithet repeated almost endlessly. In other words, it’s a Quentin Tarantino picture.” I was not wrong. But it was much more and may be Tarantino’s best film.

4. mistress america. Noah Baumbach almost made this list twice — with this offering and While We’re Young. But, for me, Mistress America is the clear winner. It’s funny, poignant and easily the most accomplished film Baumbach has made. The lengthy segment in Connecticut is probably the best sustained comedy I saw all year. And Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the film

5. trumbo. Yes, Jay Roach’s Trumbo takes some liberties with the truth and fills in some gaps with speculation, but it’s both effective as drama and as a statement on one of the darkest chapters of recent American history — the communist witch hunt of the McCarthy era. It’s that rare thing: a film that’s actually on even footing with the importance of its historical subject. That it’s also entertaining, funny and maddening doesn’t hurt in the least.

6. mr. holmes. Bill Condon returns to form with Mr. Holmes, which was also the art house hit (relatively speaking) of the summer. It manages to be many things at one time: a mystery, a rumination on age and an exploration into the mind of Sherlock Holmes. It’s a beautiful, special, deeply touching film anchored to an amazing performance by Ian McKellen .

7. me and earl and the dying girl. I expect to raise an eyebrow or two for including Alfonso GomezRejon’s Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Although, if anything, I think I’m placing it too low on the list. I’ve heard all the objections to it and buy none of them. I was entertained, moved and delighted by the film and its surprisingly stylish direction.

8. far from the madding crowd.

Not only is Thomas Vinterberg’s film version of Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd easily the most gloriously romantic film of the year, it’s also the most beautifully photographed (challenged only by Youth).

If you missed this in theaters, you’ll be kicking yourself over what you missed when you see it on DVD. 9. what we do in the shadows.

Generally, I hate the mockumentary format. I think it’s lazy and an excuse for not bothering with basic filmmaking skills. But Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows is easily the funniest movie of the year, as well as one of the best horror films (it actually has a few scares and is exceedingly gory). It’s almost not a mockumentary, too.

10. spotlight. This film from Tom McCarthy is my “safe” choice. It’s solid. It’s entertaining. It’s beautifully crafted and acted. And there’s a pretty good chance it’ll nab the Best Picture Oscar (worse choices could be — and frequently have been — made). It’s superbly done from start to finish. Will I ever feel the need to see it again? Well ... justin souther’s list.

1. mistress america. This is, if my math is correct, the ninth top10 list for Mountain Xpress. About all I’ve learned in assembling them is to be self-indulgent in their creation.

What I mean is, by putting Noah Baumbach’s Mistress America in the top slot, I’m saying it’s the most purely enjoyable film I watched this year. That it was the first time I really enjoyed myself at the movies in 2015 helps. That the film contains some expert, nearly perfect comedic filmmaking and doubles as social satire helps even more.

2. me and earl and the dying girl. Part of me is embarrassed to put Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s Me and Earl and the Dying Girl this high up.

I was reluctant to watch it, being burned by so many adaptations of Young Adult novels and still having a bad taste in my mouth from

that other YA cancer drama, Josh Boone’s schmaltzy, phony The Fault in Our Stars (2014). But, as soon as the film started, I found a heartbreaking, honest and human story tied together with Gomez-Rejon’s effortless style.

3. the hateful eight. Every time a new Tarantino film comes out, I see the trailer and decide I’m over it.

Then, of course, I end up watching the movie and enjoying the damn thing. The Hateful Eight is no different. It does exactly everything every other Taratino movie does. It’s too long; everyone shoots everyone else; and they all talk too much. Even being aware of what I was getting into, I was still fascinated watching the whole thing unspool.

4. slow west. I almost didn’t watch this. It never played in town, and my awards screener almost didn’t show up. And, for whatever reason, the idea of another Western didn’t sound all that exciting. I’m glad I didn’t pass on director John Maclean’s debut: a stylish, good-natured and intelligent story of friendship and love that still works within the expectations of the Western genre.

5. magic mike xxl. Nothing bad happens to anyone. There’s never any dramatic tension. There are just five friends looking out for one another. Their entire purpose in life is to give women pleasure, even if it’s fleeting. We often get hung up on the emotional heaviness or the profundity of films, especially when we talk about end-of-the-year lists. But what happened to just enjoying ourselves? I’ll take watching five male strippers venture to Myrtle Beach as a kind-of Americanized version of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of

the Desert (1994) over two-and-a-half hours of Leonardo DiCaprio rolling around in the mud — any day.

6. youth. I’ll probably regret placing Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth this low. (I know, at least, I’ll get a talking-to from Ken.) I think, perhaps, I need more time with the film. It’s the year’s richest, both in terms of ideas and visual style. But, barely a week after seeing it in the theater, I haven’t had time to really live with the film.

7. joy. If you asked me why I like David O. Russell’s Joy so much, I’d be hard put to explain it (which is a terrible thing to say, especially since this space is meant for making an argument as to why a film should be on this list). On the surface, I’m not sure this is a movie that should’ve even been made. It is, after all, the story of a mop inventor and the secret history of cable-TV shopping channels. But there’s something charming in this messy little movie and something affirming and pleasing in the search by the movie’s titular Joy (Jennifer Lawrence) for the American Dream.

8. anomalisa. A quiet, simple film about as far removed from director Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York (2008) as one can imagine. However, along with co-director Duke Johnson, Kaufman has made a quiet stop-motion animated film about loneliness and the struggles it creates — with enough weirdness to keep things interesting. There’s a universal quality to Anomalisa’s humanity, even if it is a movie populated by puppets.

9. Kingsman: the secret service.

Again, another movie I had reservations about. Another comic-book movie from a director (Matthew Vaughn) I occasionally like, but who has an uneven filmography. Luckily, this is more a case of a studio not knowing what to do with an idiosyncratic title than a commentary on its quality. What I found was a fun, often tasteless and often surprising movie (at least in the film’s ability to cross boundaries and offend), that also has a nasty subversive streak.

10. heart of a dog. I still don’t know if I have a total handle on Laurie Anderson’s Heart of a Dog. Or if it’s possible to have a complete idea of what Anderson’s getting at. But it’s the movie in 2015 that I’ve thought about the most. As strange and impenetrable as it might be, it’s the kind of personal filmmaking I wish we would get more of, but so rarely do. For that reason alone, it rounds off this list. X

Directed by acclaimed animator rintaro, the 2001 film is an adaptation of the 1927 fritz lang classic. In this version, Kenichi and his uncle Shunsaku Ban investigate the mystery behind robot girl Tima. Over the course of four days, the cast and crew invested four hours of hands-on training with filmmaking equipment, four hours of storyboarding and making the shot list and shooting order, seven hours of shooting on location and a full day of editing. Once on location, the students received minimal assistance from instructors and made made all creative and logistical decisions themselves. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

diRECTOR: Charles Walters (Easter Parade) Players: Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Celeste Holm, Louis Armstrong, John Lund muSiCAl COmEdy Rated NR No, this musical version of The Philadelphia Story is not a great film by any means. Charles Walters’ direction is at best workmanlike, at worst pedestrian. It has the air of canned theater in many scenes, along with that typical 1950s overlit look of most MGM musicals. But it does combine the talents of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Celeste Holm and Louis Armstrong with some terrific Cole Porter songs. And, when it hews closely to the original play and 1940 screenplay, High Society has much to recommend it. I admit, there’s a certain nostalgia value for me since it (or at least its soundtrack album) was my introduction to the movie musical.

I don’t know if we saw the movie in the theater. It came out in 1956, before I was quite two, and my first memory of the the movie itself is from the 1967 ABC television broadcast. But that album sold me (it still does). In fact, by the time I was four, I had somehow gotten it away from my parents. Seriously, how far wrong can you go with that cast and those Cole Porter songs? diRECTOR: George Stevens Players: Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur, Van Heflin, Brandon De Wilde, Jack Palance, Ben Johnson, Edgar Buchanan WESTERN Rated NR George Stevens’ post-WWII films tend to be an acquired taste which I’ve never really managed to acquire. They’re too heavy-handed, too self-conscious, too self-important and, invariably, too long. The first time I saw Shane (1953) was at a kiddie matinee in 1963 or thereabouts. (Our local theater ran a lot of old Paramount and Universal products for this purpose. Frankly, I doubt they actually booked them, but rather happened to already have the prints.) At the time, it bored me stiff. Seen today, it no longer bores me. In fact, it may just be the best of Stevens’ later films — not in the least because it reproduces the basic dynamic of his The Talk of the Town (1942) in Western terms. (That Jean Arthur serves the same function in both films increases that sense, as does the presence of Edgar Buchanan.) Otherwise, it’s a pretty straightforward settlers-vs.-land-barons Western, but done in an unusually gritty, unromanticized manner, with perhaps the most realistic lighting seen at the time. The biggest downside today is probably Brandon De Wilde, who may well be the most annoying child star of all time. That Stevens seems to dote on the kid and constantly insert reaction shots of him does not help matters. The Hendersonville Film Society will show shane Sunday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. in the Smoky Mountain Theater at Lake Pointe Landing Retirement Community (behind Epic Cinemas), 333 Thompson St., Hendersonville.

diRECTOR: Phil Rosen (Return of the Ape Man) Players: Bela Lugosi, Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Bobby Jordan, Sunshine Sammy Morrison, Dave O’Brien, Dorothy Short, Angelo Rossitto hORROR COmEdy Rated NR The second of Bela Lugosi’s Monogram Nine, Spooks Run Wild, mixes horror with comedy as it finds Lugosi going up against producer Sam Katzman’s other major property of the era, The East Side Kids, a slightly cleaned-up version of The Dead End Kids from Sidney Kingsley’s play (and film) Dead End. In other words, these were comic juvenile delinquents (though hardly as sanitized as they’d become when they transitioned to The Bowery Boys). It’s a silly trifle of a personality vehicle that presents Lugosi in one of those roles where he does things of a mysterious and/ or sinister nature simply because he is Bela Lugosi — and because, in this case, he has a dwarf sidekick (Angelo Rossitto). In a movie like this, that’s enough of a reason. It mostly involves the Kids seeking shelter in his Old Dark House after one of them gets shot in the local cemetery (“How ... unfortunate!”), then concluding that he’s the serial murderer known as the “Monster Killer.” (In fairness, his actions do lend themselves to that interpretation.) As filmmaking, it’s no great shakes. As a Lugosi picture, it has quite a bit going for it. The Thursday Horror Picture Show will screen spooks run wild Thursday, Jan. 14, at 8 p.m. in Theater Six at The Carolina Asheville, hosted by Xpress movie critics Ken Hanke and Scott Douglas.

Michael Bay goes all serious — and maybe political — with this film version of the book 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi, which is apparently not political. (We’ll see about that.) Bay’s big star here is John Krasinski, so clearly this isn’t predicated on name value. Expect much firepower and exploding things. (r)

Norm Of The North When your star voice actor is Adam Sandler’s pal Rob Schneider, chances are you’re in trouble. Lionsgate tells us: “A polar bear of many words, Norm’s greatest gripe is simple: There is no room for tourists in the Arctic. But when a maniacal developer threatens to build luxury condos in his own backyard, Norm does what all normal polar bears would do...he heads to New York City to stop it. With a cast of ragtag lemmings at his side, Norm takes on the big apple, big business and a big identity crisis to save the day.” At the moment, only Epic of Hendersonville is down for this. Asheville may be spared, but it’s unlikely. (pg)

Ride Along 2 Yes, the original was critically reviled, but it made money, so now we get the cleverly named Ride Along 2. Apparently, the plot doesn’t matter since all Universal has to say is, “Kevin Hart and Ice Cube lead the returning lineup of Ride Along 2, the sequel to the blockbuster actioncomedy that gave us the year’s most popular comedy duo.” Can this top the 18 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating of the original?
