C

raig Howe has been in the construction trades almost 50 years—

from carpentry work as a student and working for builders to founding Talbot Builders, his own design-build company in New London, New Hampshire. One of his latest projects was

the most challenging and interesting of his long career. This project on

Pleasant Lake was designed and built to strict specifications based on the science of architecture in relation to ancient Hindu philosophy known

as Vedic architecture. “It is the belief that nature and all of the celestial bodies and north-south-east-west energy that comes from the earth can be utilized at its maximum if you design the house with Maharishi Vastu principles,” Craig says.

This type of architecture is designed only by specially certified architects. Talbot Builders was hired by the homeowners, who were interested in Vedic architecture and its philosophy and had contracted with Henry Dearborn from Iowa to design the home. “There are a lot of rules about dimensions and placements of rooms in a Vedic house that have an impact on health, prosperity, family life, and everything humans interact with on a daily basis,”Craig explains.

Siting of the property is also strictly determined in terms of how the house and rooms are oriented, Craig explains. “Vedic architecture is precise, so we had to build this house with under a quarter inch of tolerance. We hired a surveyor to align the house exactly north, south, east, and west. The front entry must face perfectly east. Then we had to hire another surveyor to check the first surveyor. It had to be that precise. It was a challenge, and we double-checked ourselves all the way through the process. It was very rewarding to pass the certification at the end.”

Craig continues, “When the house is completed, it must have a barrier fence to keep everything contained and that also has to be dimensionally precise. ” It took four years to build the three-bedroom, three-story house and it was finished in the summer of 2024.

Building a Reputation “We feel very fortunate that we’ve been able to establish ourselves as one of the premier builders in the area,” Craig says. “It’s been a long road to get here. It’s a tough industry to be in but a very rewarding one as well.” Craig put himself through college doing carpentry work, and after earning a civil engineering degree at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, he returned to New London and worked for several builders managing construction projects.

Twenty-five years ago, he branched out and started his own company, and in 2018, when property on Main Street became available, he and his building professional partners jumped at the chance to buy it. “It just so happened to be the same property that I grew up in in the 1970s. We renovated the barn my father had renovated, which had been his art studio,” Craig says. Today the barn houses the four professionals who purchased the building, all in the construction industry: a landscape architect, an architect, and a civil engineer as well as Talbot Builders.

A Talented Team Craig has a team of professionals he works with regularly. “It’s really fun finding professionals, artists, and architects who enjoy the process as much as I do. I do a lot of design work myself, but I don’t have time anymore to design an entire house. I design a lot of interior millwork, cabinetry, furniture, molding, and architectural details. We collaborate with interior designers, architects, carpenters, engineers, and landscapers. We do the house from tree cutting to final completion and landscaping. We manage the entire project and connect all the pieces. It all depends on what the client needs and wants. Everything is customized to the individual client.”

Craig is involved with the process from the beginning. “We start very early with site meetings with the architects and the owners.

In the design meetings we’re often involved with discussions of what’s possible long before the plans are completed. By the time we are ready to build, we’ve already been through the whole design and worked out all the details. Then we take it from there. Our job is to coordinate all the decisions that have to be made and manage client expectations. It’s important that it’s a fun, rewarding process for the whole team.”

Sustainable Building One of the benefits Talbot Builders offers clients is knowledge of local building codes and the process of how to get the proper permits, particularly when working on a lake.

“We hire professionals who know all the rules.

They have the planning and permitting process down.” Knowledge of building in this region is also important, Craig says. “There are a lot of climate- and weather-related issues that if you don’t pay attention to, they will affect the future maintenance of the house. I’m always very aware of what Mother Nature can throw at us. We use state-of-the-art products to make sure the house is durable and energy efficient.”

Talbot Builders stays true to the practice of sustainable building, which to Craig means a house that requires minimal resources after it has been built. Clad windows, which require no painting, are an important feature as well as using nonhazardous indoor materials. “In my mind, sustainable means durable. It means a house that’s going to not require a lot of financial resources as well as material resources to maintain. During the building process we recycle materials as much as we can and use products that are good for the environment and good for the house. ith a desire to leave a lasting legacy and an architectural landmark for the state of New Hampshire, where do you begin? With an idea to build a 150,000-square-foot luxury lakefront resort in

New Hampshire and a budget of $85 million dollars, the most important first step is to partner with an architectural firm who will take your vision and create the process that makes the dream come true.

And that has been going on for three years as The Lake Estate on Winnisquam takes shape minutes east of I-93’s exit 20 in Tilton.

Samyn-D’Elia Architects of Holderness has been tasked with putting The Lake Estate on Winnisquam on the map as well as the Forbes Travel Guide’s Five-Star list of hotels, restaurants, and spas. While there are currently Forbes-rated Four-Star and fewer properties in New Hampshire, there are no Forbes Five-Star properties in the state. “Having looked at a number of their previous projects, I developed a genuine admiration for Samyn-D’Elia’s work. Their meticulous attention to detail, commitment to quality, and distinct design aesthetic truly impressed me,” says Ed Rocco, The Lake Estate on Winnisquam general manager and minority investor. “Their architectural style was the ideal match for the grand vision of this resort.” to achieve that status, a team of architects, planners, and designers would become the bedrock of the project.

The firm’s principal architects, Cris Salomon and Clay Hayles, invited me to see everything from the structure’s bones to the fine finishes as work progressed. To experience the resort in its unfinished state is an eye-opening glimpse of the project’s complexities and offers appreciation to the teamwork required to bring it in on time and within budget.

AN EXTRAORDINARY LOCAL TEAM Yes, $85 million is a lot of money. You don’t join the Forbes list using building shortcuts and inferior materials. Cris explains the materials and craftsmanship that combine to create a stunning result. “We took some design cues from a hotel actually on the top of Mount Washington that had some beautiful, heavy timber beams. And we’ve worked with Timberpeg, a local timber frame company out of Claremont, to source those timbers as well as doing all the exterior bracketry and details in the project,” Cris says. “So really [it came] down to just the craftsmen themselves,” he says.

“They’re all local, working on the project, [creating] the culture and the drive for this to be an exceptional property. Everybody has a passion here because they’re all part of the project and local. And getting everybody to buy in.” To that end, during my tour, both Cris and Clay stop and speak with several workers about the project, making sure their connectivity needed for a world-class project is maintained.

“We’re a small and nimble firm, we’re not looking to grow to be the biggest firm in the state or anything,” says Cris. “We’re looking to be a boutique design firm and achieving everybody’s— our clients’—visions and goals. . . .”

At the front end of the project connection are the investors and managers. Dan and Elaine Dagesse, owners of 28 auto dealerships in six states including New Hampshire, are providing the capital. Longtime hospitality professionals around Boston’s better properties, Ed and Patti Rocco, will oversee operations.

The Roccos have been major players in the design of this project with Samyn-D’Elia.

“This project owes its existence to Dan and Elaine Dagesse,” Ed says. “Their foresight in purchasing the land and their unwavering belief in its potential were the crucial sparks.

They truly envisioned the beauty of this 36-acre lakeside setting, and their inspiration is the heart of this development.”

ACHIEVING THE VISION Samyn-D’Elia Architects was a natural choice, known for their experience with designing estate-style and legacy residences in the state.

The Lake Estate on Winnisquam, slated to open in August 2025, will feature 96 guest rooms and 18 suites with an exterior resembling a grand cedar-shingled and stone lake estate set on 36 acres. It’s the type of work Samyn-D’Elia is known for. Putting a finer point on what to expect is Cris’s description: “The focus here is to create a grand hotel of New Hampshire.

Something that hearkens back to the late 1800s to early 1900s, when families were coming to New Hampshire and the White Mountains to experience the outdoors. That’s really what we’re trying to create with this facility.”

Founded in 1980, Samyn-D’Elia Architects has built a portfolio of compelling and diverse projects, working along the way with the likes of restauranteur and humanitarian Alex Ray, owner of The Common Man restaurants. I ask Cris, who, at 40, has summited Mount Everest twice, what the future plans are for the firm.

clients’—visions and goals and are not looking to grow expansively,” he says.

Principal Clay Hayles worked for a decade in New York after graduating from Yale. Most of Clay’s work prior to this project was in residential design, but his move to SDA five years ago meant the ability to work on projects like this new luxury hotel with a larger scope and greater range of work. “After I moved here in 2020, to get tasked with this project within the year and to have this under construction at this stage in my career has been a real honor and privilege and certainly a lifelong dream. Somewhat selfishly, so much of my career has been designing people’s houses, which is a great experience, but when it’s done, unless you’re good friends with the owner, you don’t ever really get to see it again. At least here (The Lake Estate on Winnisquam), I can go and have a drink every once in a while and enjoy it,” he says, smiling.

THE WORK IS PERSONAL Historic preservation is an important component of the firm’s portfolio, which includes current work on North Church in Portsmouth.

Samyn-D’Elia’s work has earned many awards, including the Bulfinch Award given by the New England Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art for their work on the fire station in North Conway. “[It was] important to us as a practice. This fire station hearkens back to the industrial architecture of 19th century New England, with a lot of brick detailing and is a grand civic gesture on an important public park in North Conway,” Clay explains.

In many ways, work is personal to firm members, including Cris, who attended Norwich University. “Being an architect in New Hampshire is [that] we’re really trying to create the experience that we love and cherish . . . enjoying New Hampshire. And that speaks to all of our projects, the experience that we’re creating for our clients and why are they coming to New Hampshire to have a vacation home, to retire here, to raise a family here. heryl Boghosian, ASID, lead designer at Gilberte Interiors of Hanover, New Hampshire, recently transformed a home for clients by reimaging the spaces and creating a new, fresh look that reflects their lifestyle.

The clients, who were purchasing a home and relocating to New Hampshire, wanted Cheryl and her team to design a home that was uniquely theirs.

Gilberte Interiors is a family business that was formed nearly 60 years ago in 1967. The firm has in-house designers who collaborate with teams of architects, contractors, and specialists to take projects from conception to completion. This project, which involved reimagining and repurposing spaces as well as creating a new interior design, was an example of that teamwork.

UTILIZING THE HOME IN A BETTER WAY “The existing home was lovely but reflected the family that had constructed the house years ago,” explains Cheryl. “The spaces felt more delineated, and the layout of the home was chopped up. We worked to open areas and created space and a sense of light, while still using rich, inviting tones and textures.”

Cheryl continues, “Our design style is to make sure we listen to our clients as they tell us about their lifestyle and what appeals to them. Our goal for this project was to incorporate much of their existing furnishings and extensive art collection and create spaces that felt designed with all of this in mind, not forced out of place.”

The next step was for the design team at Gilberte Interiors to examine the home’s layout, rearranging walls, plumbing, lighting, and archetypal elements that could be incorporated in another space.

Then they worked to select wall finishes, flooring, lighting, and additional furnishings that would enhance the ambience of the home. The result was

a design that utilized the footprint of the house in a better way that suits the needs and style of the clients.

“The renovations clearly had challenges, but our clients worked through the process and options with open minds and respected recommendations,” says Cheryl. “We worked to incorporate fixtures and finishes that feel well-connected with the changes we made in the balance of the house.”

The layout and function of many spaces in the home were changed to suit the needs of the clients. This included carving out an area for an added elevator and guest suite with a kitchenette.

While this added to the challenge, the contractors discussed feasibility and options with the Gilberte team. Then the team worked with the clients to make sure the house incorporated these changes and were well-placed, creating a flow to the home.

The Gilberte team reconfigured the layout and updated the design of several bathrooms to use the spaces more efficiently as well as to give a more contemporary look that mirrors the overall design of the home. The bathrooms, especially the hall

children’s/guest bathroom, had been sectioned off and had fixtures and finishes popular at the time of construction. Each bath was stripped to the bare bones and reconfigured using a new design. They also expanded on the guest bath over the garage to create a generous space with a beautiful walkin shower. Using wall-mounted vanities helped create more of a sense of spaciousness as well.

LISTEN AND LEARN Cheryl explains, “There are always challenges in creating well-designed spaces. What sets Gilberte Interiors apart is what we do as a team. We get so excited to dig in and find the ‘right’ solution for every project, every client.”

Cheryl believes that Gilberte Interiors has been so successful with this and countless other transformations because the first step is to always listen and learn about their clients and then bring them along through the process. Cheryl’s brother, Aharon Boghosian, has extensive knowledge and expertise in both design and construction. Working together they can present well-thought-out designs that are feasible and functional.

For Cheryl, a strong reason for the success of any project is being able to work as a team.

“This means having the experience in design and renovation, but also in understanding that each person brings ideas and skills that should be considered and respected. We worked with Ennis Construction and a team of tradesman throughout this project, and each made the project move forward smoothly. Creating a home that is a success for our clients is possible only when everyone builds on each other’s ideas and skills.

This is a team effort with a focus on creating interiors that reflect the clients, while always incorporating good design.

“Projects like this one really remind me and my family at Gilberte Interiors that our business is to create well-designed interiors and make the process a positive experience for our clients,” comments Cheryl. “In listening to them, we strive to make their spaces reflect both their tastes, but with a design that lets them enjoy their spaces. or people who live in the real world, the dream of owning an island is not about a faraway escape.

A hundred years ago, for the rich and famous, kitchen islands were found in butler’s pantries. These islands were not what we think of when imagining a beautiful kitchen island today.

ichael Burns, owner of MB Pro Landscape Design, has been working on various projects recently, including the installation of numerous outdoor features. His customers are asking for outdoor fireplaces, firepits, kitchens, concrete countertops and tables, patios, water features, pool decks, driveways, walls, and walkways.

“Outdoor spaces are becoming more livable and luxurious all the time,” says Mike, whose company is observing 22 years in business in 2025. “People want to add all the conveniences that they have inside the home—including heating, cooling, lighting, and music and televisions with high-quality sound tied to home audio systems,” he explains. Families are opting for arbors, gazebos, trellises, pavilions, pergolas, and cabanas for shade and privacy. Adding misters to use during the hot, humid summer months can extend the time you enjoy your patio, and firepits, fireplaces, and heaters keep everyone cozy as temperatures begin to cool.

CATERING TO THE CHEF Today’s outdoor kitchens are limited only by the homeowner’s imagination.

SOLAFLECT INTRODUCES SOLARPOWERED EV CHARGING

T

he first commercial car sales in the United States began to rev up in the 1890s, but the first drive-in service station didn’t appear until 1913. Before then, drivers had to buy gas in cans from pharmacies, hardware stores, and blacksmiths or use a roadside pump to fill a can.

Today’s EV (electric vehicle) drivers can feel their pain, only now it’s called “range anxiety.” Happily, relief is coming, and the free-standing, off-the-electricitygrid Solar EV Chargers from Norwich, Vermont–based Solaflect Energy are an important, clean-energy part of the solution.

MEETING A GROWING DEMAND In 1913, there were approximately 500,000 autos in the US. Today, there are more than 279 million. Before 2008, the number of EVs was essentially zero. Now EVs are the best-selling type of car in the country, doubling their numbers yearly for a while, and still growing at a steady clip.

A shortage of charging stations is one deterrent to sales. Oil companies, urged on by car manufacturers, created our current dense network of service stations.

It’s very different with EVs: States and municipalities are struggling to install the needed chargers. One of the fastest growing EV charging solutions has come from forward-thinking local employers, urged on by EV-owning employees, that have begun installing chargers in their parking lots. Dartmouth College; Hypertherm, Inc.; Middlebury College; DH Cheshire Medical Center; and Williams College are among those that have installed Solaflect EV Chargers, and the trend is gaining momentum.

GOING GREEN Installing chargers connected to the power grid isn’t as straightforward as it sounds.

The laborious process requires getting permits, scheduling months in advance, digging up and repaving parking lots, upgrading utility infrastructure, installing electrical hookups—all expensive. And every few years, employers have to do it again to keep up with the annual growth in EV-driving employees. Employers also have to ration charger use, so employees have to move their EV after a period of time, and, in some cases, pay penalty fees if they forget to relinquish their charger.

day. Depending on the employer’s business plan, Solar EV Chargers can be bought outright or leased for a flat annual rate.

THE PERFECT “TOP-OFF” SOLUTION According to Solaflect Energy’s COO Rob Adams, the Solar EV Charger is particularly well-suited for an employer-provided, workday “topping-off ” solution to support EV driving commuters. Studies show EV owners charge their cars like they do their smartphones: They top off their batteries whenever a cord is available. The studies also show that drivers like to keep their EVs at 50 percent to 80 percent of full charge. Topping off for a few hours during the workday is more than enough for the daily commute.

EV charging costs about one-third as much as buying gasoline today. And the price of sunshine doesn’t increase over time, unlike

electricity at 3 to 5 percent a year, so the 100 percent clean energy from a Solar EV Charger gets relatively cheaper each year. Unfortunately, most grid energy is not clean. It’s an unhappy fact that only 5 percent of New England grid energy comes from solar and wind, while about 50 percent comes from burning natural gas, and the remainder comes from large dams and nuclear plants.

The EV boom has grown even faster on the West Coast. THE SOLAR TRACKER Including the EV chargers, Solaflect Energy has installed more than 1,300 trackers in New England, providing 45 million-plus hours of operation. arson Burns wants to help you live your best life in a beautiful home you love. From window treatments, wallpaper, and paint to custom furniture for every room in the

house, no matter the challenge, his goal is to solve problems and create happy clients. His interest in design began as a teenager in Tennessee.

His stepmother owned a custom drapery workshop and, whether measuring or installing, he frequently accompanied her to clients’ houses. Larson remembers, “We would go into these nice homes filled with nice things and I was inspired. I realized that I wanted to design beautiful rooms and homes.”

To fulfill that goal, Larson attended the Atlanta Art Institute to study interior design.

He stayed in Atlanta and began working as an in-house designer for a high-end condominium company. He participated in projects up and down the eastern seaboard, adjusting to regional and client design needs, tastes, and ideals. A project requiring Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification (LEED) inspired him to actively integrate sustainability into his design portfolio.

A NEW CHALLENGE In 2011, Larson and his husband Franklin moved to the Upper Valley to be closer to Franklin’s family. It was an ideal time for Larson to take a break and pursue a second degree in environmental studies. While he is interested in working with all homeowners, he is particularly keen on helping those with environmental concerns and sustainability goals.

After years of designing for southern climates, the move to the Upper Valley offered a new challenge. He began working with traditional New England homes as well as more modern vacation houses.

He joined Chrisandras Interiors in Ludlow, Vermont, and shares, “I love the challenge of working with different architectural styles and designing to both the family’s needs and wants and the home’s architecture.”

With more than 25 years working in residential and commercial design and a strong base in Vermont, Larson took the leap and started Winterberry Designs in 2023. In keeping with his philosophy of designing for sustainability, Larson approaches his projects with an heirloom mentality. “From a wonderful piece of pottery to a room’s furnishings, I’m always looking for beautiful, handcrafted materials and objects,” he says. “I encourage clients to bring well-designed, well-built pieces into their homes. MAKING CLIENTS HAPPY Larson loves working with clients. Regardless of size or scope, he starts each design project by visiting the space and asking lots of questions. Whether it’s new drapes or a new kitchen, his ultimate goal is to solve your design issue. To do that, he first needs to get a good grip on the problem or, as is often the case, problems.

To gain a clear understanding, Larson knows “There’s a fair amount of psychology involved. I need to get into homeowners’ heads to learn what will make them happy.” When asking questions and showing samples, he pays close attention to his clients’ reactions—both their verbal and nonverbal reactions. can’t hurt my feelings. Tell me what you really think.” He knows that is the only way to ensure the homeowner will be happy with the end results. “I want my clients to be happy with the design for long time— even a lifetime.”

A COMPLETE PARTNERSHIP Katie Earley and her husband are first-time homeowners in Meriden, New Hampshire. “Larson is truly a gift,” says Katie. With a full-time job and a toddler, she admits she needs a lot of handholding. “He has done a great job of listening to understand how we live, our priorities, and budget. I’m not interested in fads. I want my home to look classic and timeless. Larson gets me.” Larson has helped Katie refine her tastes and design needs. Together, they put together a plan and are tackling the design, one project at a time.

Many homeowners might wonder if a designer is really necessary.

“Look to the professionals,” Larson advises. “Whether it’s measuring, color choices and combinations, sizes, or placement, homeowners tend to make mistakes—and they can be costly. After all, it’s not their job to know the best spot to install a light or how to measure for kitchen counters and cabinets.” If working with a professional is not in this year’s budget, it’s better to delay and save up for what you really need—and want. And as Stephanie Joy found out, Larson’s vast knowledge of materials and suppliers can even save you money.

Stephanie has worked with Larson on six different projects in her primary and vacation homes. For the most part, these projects involved new furniture and window treatments. They are now in the early stages of a major new project, a kitchen remodel in the Joys’ Vermont vacation home. “Working with Larson is terrific,” says Stephanie. “It’s a complete partnership. He really listens to my vision and ideas.”

“Throughout a project, he lets me know what’s going on, if there are delays or changes.” Stephanie is continually impressed with his creativity and vast knowledge. “He knows so much about what and how things fit together. He never resorts to cookie cutter designs,” she says.

CUSTOM DESIGN, HEIRLOOM QUALITY To help his clients achieve the perfect home, Larson employs workshops locally and around the country to implement his custom window and furniture designs. “It can be difficult to impossible or simply too time consuming to find the perfect ready-made solution in the proper scale, color, fabric, or wood,” he says. Since his teenage years helping his stepmother, he has been working with various window treatment and upholstery workshops.

More recently, he has added custom wood furniture to his portfolio.

Larson’s heirloom quality, custom designed tables are built by an Amish furniture maker. Whether a dining room is cozy or expansive, he can provide you with the right dimensions in your favorite woods.
