Students set out to change the world

By Brad Quarin The future looks brighter for the youth of Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area who travelled to Calgary at the end of October to be part of changing the world.

Livingstone School in Lundbreck, Crowsnest Consolidated High School in Coleman and Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek sent some of their best and brightest students to We Day. The annual event empowers youth activists to switch direction from Me thinking to We thinking. They demonstrate this new thinking by leading projects for change both in their own hometowns and in locales around the world. Local students are already hard at work making this difference.

One novel project was undertaken by Livingstone School even before it sent 19 Grade 9 students to We Day. Teacher Karen Tamminga-Paton was surprised to learn from We Day organizers that one used AA battery contains enough life-saving zinc for six malnourished children. Other types and sizes can be taken to a Lethbridge depot that pays for used batteries.

So, Livingstone School put out collection bins, and when the community learned about the unique project, people

began bringing in their used batteries.

The school wound up collecting enough batteries to fill an orange box and half a shoebox, Karen says. Money collected as well as a matching donation from RBC — and the used AA batteries — will be sent to Kenya.

Livingstone School student Addy Halibert says they are also busy selling rafiki bracelets made by women in Africa. The profits from these sales will go back to these women.

Meanwhile, students and staff are planning to make school lunches. Money raised will go to the

Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek food banks, Addy says.

Another local project is the collection of mittens, scarves and hats for the Women’s Resource and Crisis Centre in Blairmore and the Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter, Karen says.

All of this ties in with We Day lessons, which include helping those who need a hand and caring for our communities, Addy explains.

These lessons got through to the 29 student leaders from CCHS who attended We Day as well.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are — you can still make a difference in your community and the rest of the world,” says student Ashley Enefer.

To make a difference around the world, CCHS students are lending money through a website to people who need it, says student Ethan Flegg.

The money comes from school fundraisers such as bake sales and taco-in-a-bag sales, and can pay for schooling and scholarships in developing countries, says student Liam Knott. Eventually, it will be paid back.

a bingo card. Classes compete to complete their card, and the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank benefits. Community residents are welcome to drop off food donations at the school. Last year, CCHS brought in hundreds of pounds of food in its drive, says teacher John Bole.

Students of Matthew Halton High School also got busy in the wake of We Day. For their local project, six members of the Students Inspiring Change club went trick-or-treating, collecting food donations for the Junction food bank. The program is called We Scare Hunger.

“We decided to do this again this year because we had such a good turnout last year, and it is always great to help out the community and also families that do go to the food bank,” says one of the participants, Cayleigh Duffield. “Everyone is so supportive of it.”

The teens visited homes behind Ranchland Mall and St. Michael’s School and near MHHS. They also placed a bin in the mall to collect more donations.

Susan Kuftinoff at the Junction says the students brought in 200 pounds of non-perishable food, which she considers a “good haul.”

The food consisted of cereal, soup and canned vegetables, and there were also bags and boxes of diapers. Susan says the Junction definitely appreciates the students’ contribution.

Megan McGlynn, a leader in Students Inspiring Change, says more projects are in the planning stage. “They combine our passions with something that we believe will help others or benefit a charity organization,” she says.

This year’s We Day proved vital in planning these projects. “We learned where we could start and how to kick off our new Me to We thinking.”

Hopefully, the students’ efforts to change the world will carry on into their future, and yield the positive results they envision.

My Little Corner I’ve found myself dwelling on the concept of kindness lately.

Most people I know are kind and compassionate but, in troubled times, we can see these traits put to the test.

If you use any form of social media I’m quite certain you know what I mean. “Friends” are attacking one another for their beliefs and for their fears, and don’t seem concerned that it’s all playing out on a public stage.

Among the negative posts, there are some gems that focus on kindness.

“The world is full of nice people. If you can’t find one, be one.”

Nishan Panwar’s quote was a good one that appeared on my Facebook newsfeed over the weekend. Its theme fits well with the ideology Shootin’ the Breeze is based on.

Shining a spotlight on the positive things happening in our communities is what our staff does best. In this way, we share kindness.

That part of our job is easy. There is never a shortage of ideas about individuals, organizations, businesses and events to write about.

afternoon, in the form of a woman driving by on a John Deere tractor.

I had been shovelling heavy, hardpacked snow for more than an hour.

About two-thirds of my 80-foot driveway was cleared and I was weary.

With her hood pulled up and a surgical mask covering the lower part of her face, I could see only smiling eyes as she pulled up to the driveway and motioned me aside.

In less than five minutes she had made a huge dent in the work that was still ahead of me. She didn’t stop to let me thank her, she simply smiled again, waved, and continued on her way.

This act of kindness made a huge difference to my mood and to the rest of my day. I finished clearing the snow with renewed energy, doing even more than I had intended to.

Kindness breeds kindness. When you feel overwhelmed by fear or negativity, share a little kindness and let it brighten your day.

Spotlight shines on hockey coach

By Brad Quarin A small-town coach has been named Hockey Alberta’s coach of the month.

In November, Cory Anderson of Pincher Creek was chosen as October’s coach of the month by the group that governs organized hockey in Alberta.

“That was a pretty cool and unexpected phone call,” says Cory. He feels good about representing a small town for a title dominated by coaches from cities like Calgary and Lethbridge.

Cory coaches the novice B team in the Spud League.

Playing hockey while growing up, he learned some useful lessons from his coaches that extended well beyond the game of hockey, from how to tie a knot to how to shake hands.

When his own son began playing hockey five years ago, Cory opted to pay forward the good deeds of his past coaches by taking on the responsibility of coaching.

In his first season, he coached 23 children, some as young as four and some with little idea of how to skate.

Over the past five years, he has stuck with the same children and it has been rewarding to see them grow in life and in hockey, moving up to the atom level. Many of these children are now eight or nine.

Cory finds that these young hockey players have become a well-mannered group who realize

they are representing their town and association.

By his reckoning, a good coach is defined by patience and the ability to discover what approach works best for each player.

Some children need to be pushed while others learn best with promised rewards, such as a small game after learning a lesson, he says. He finds that not all coaches realize the value of this strategy.

Coaching has been time consuming, and Cory says he puts a couple of hours into the task every night, often watching Hockey Canada for new ideas.

His efforts appeared to pay off last year, when he led 15 players to the Spud League playoff banner, winning against the Raymond team.

The two teams were equally strong, he felt.

However, he was delighted when his own team played phenomenally well in the playoffs, winning 8-0 and 6-4.

The children exceeded his expectations, demonstrating that they had mastered issues which had previously needed work. “It was amazing to watch,” Cory says.

To be named coach of the month, detailed letters on your behalf must be received by Hockey Alberta. He was surprised to learn he had received four nominations.

There has been lots of congratulations and hand shaking since he received his title, and it makes for great publicity for Pincher Creek Minor Hockey.

Warm hands provided by a warm heart

By Erin Fairhurst A Crowsnest Pass woman is giving the ultimate gift this winter, and it’s the kind that’s sure to make you feel warm and fuzzy — literally.

Bernice Sprague is a longtime volunteer at the Crowsnest Pass Women’s Resource Centre and she’s also a longtime knitter — her Grandma taught her when she was just seven. Last year, Bernice began knitting and donating an assortment of mittens to the Women’s Resource Centre, and this year she’s kept up the tradition.

“It’s something she just started doing, and it’s just really awesome,” says Desiree Simoneau, co-ordinator of the resource centre. “Bernice does so much for our community.”

Bernice knits mittens of all colours and patterns and then the mittens are sold at the centre, with the proceeds going towards toys and books for Christmas hampers.

“If I don’t do the dusting or the dishes, then I can knit a pair a day,” Bernice says with a laugh. “I almost always have a pair on the go. Don’t ask me how many pairs I’ve knit!”

Bernice usually fires up her knitting needles while she watches figure skating or the news, and says she’s

committed to dedicating a daily amount of time towards her pet project.

“It’s nice for people to receive something that somebody spent time on,” she says, “especially during the holidays.”

Bernice hopes her mittens will inspire other knitters and crafters to use their own talents to spread some goodwill.

“If everyone took a little bit of time out of their day to do something for someone else, well that would be quite nice, wouldn’t it?” she reflects.

If you’re not a knitter, chances are you still have a big bag of wool lurking in the back of a closet from those days that you promised yourself you’d learn how to knit. If that’s the case, Bernice says she’s happy to take donations, or better yet, you can take it to the Women’s Resource Centre, which is located on the second floor of the Provincial Building in Blairmore.

“The Women’s Resource Centre is very needed in our community,” Bernice says, “and every little bit helps.”

Bernice’s mittens are sure to warm many hands this winter, but hopefully her story has also warmed your heart — and inspired you to think of how you can follow her example and pay it forward this holiday season.

His article in the ATA magazine garnered him the cover photo, which shows him with his granddaughter Keele Avery checking the trapline (the catch was a mouse) at a local cabin on the MX Ranch. The photo was taken by Keele’s mother, Whitney Sandulak.

Judy Mackintosh of Twin Butte was surprised to learn that she was chosen as SCTA member of the year and was thrilled to receive a handcrafted silver necklace inset with a beaver tooth, made by a local business, McRae Silver. Judy has taken a leadership role in organizing the 2016 ATA 43rd Rendezvous and Outdoorsman Show, to be held in Pincher Creek. They are expecting up to 700 people on the July long weekend.

With 100 members, the SCTA is up to the task and looking forward to the event, says Judy. They will utilize the agricultural grounds at the west end of town to host an array of displays, including vendors, educational seminars, trapping demonstrations, guest speakers and the crowning glory of the event, the Ultimate Trapper competition.

Day passes and food will be available on-site.

Judy says there will be something for everyone as the show is very family-oriented. ATA president Anne Coles, who was at the banquet,

says she is looking forward to spending time in Pincher Creek, visiting old friends and making new ones.

Brent says the theme for the 2016 Rendezvous will be “Canada was born on the fur industry.

That will be our focus.” He says part of the SCTA mandate is “to really help people understand trapping and what the association is all about.

We try to get more people involved through education.”

Judy says, “People don’t realize how much trappers contribute to the management end of wildlife biology.”

Brent explains, “We provide numbers and data to biologists so they can regulate seasons and harvest quotas with more accurate information, and in the long run, this helps save taxpayers money.”

The funds raised at the banquet will go to hunter and trapping education, trapping courses, youth camps, Alberta Hunter Education Program (sending youth), an ongoing wolverine study in partnership with the ACA, and helping to host the Rendezvous.

Members have mandatory trapping licences, operate under strict regulation and, in turn, help manage furbearers. “We gain information in the field you can’t get anywhere else,” says Brent.

Trappers help give accurate information on the predator-prey structure and Alberta Conservation uses this information to educate and benefit

the whole ecosystem.

In Alberta, every trapper is required to have a licence. Most trappers enjoy this way of life and do it in order to be a part of the scheme of management.

“Because the SCTA is family-friendly, we encourage the youth to take part in courses and learn about trapping and wildlife, which in turn may lead them to become scientists, game wardens, biologists or even veterinarians,” Brent says.

“The education that SCTA provides by working with the public, especially the younger generation, will continue to enhance the management of a renewable resource through trapping.”

Perhaps the program from the evening explains it best: “Our country was built on the fur trade — it is a long and colourful part of our history and culture. Our aim is to continue the traditions of the fur trade in these modern times, promoting ongoing trapper education with a strong emphasis on humane and efficient trapping techniques, as well as fur-handling skills, wilderness safety and bush craft.

“Our youth are the future of trapping and we offer this education to them at little or no cost to their families.”

Everyone’s a winner at Crowsnest Dental

Trick-or-treaters who wound up with too many sweets to eat were able to share their candy, selling it to Crowsnest Dental for $1 per pound.

This year, about a dozen children brought in 84 pounds of candy, says Beverly Walsh, administrative assistant at Crowsnest Dental. This is up from 77 pounds at last year’s Halloween Candy Buy-Back.

The winner of the draw for an Orpheum Theatre goodie basket, which included four movie passes, was Dawson Folkard.

On entry forms at the buy-back, children were also challenged to make a Christmas drawing that could go onto a mug for Crowsnest Dental patients in December. Staff voted on a winner, who, coincidentally, was Dawson’s sister, Ivy. “Crowsnest Dental thanks all the participants in the colouring contest. It was a hard decision to pick a winner,” Beverly says.

The candy will go to Lethbridge and then to Canadian troops for Christmas.

Passtrak athletes claim provincial running titles Submitted by Ritch Braun Five members of Passtrak, the Crowsnest Pass track and field club, participated in the Alberta cross-country running championships, held in Wetaskiwin on Nov. 7. All five did an exceptional job in their age groups, and two claimed provincial titles.

Naoise Gelber competed in the tyke girls division, which includes athletes under the age of 10. She ran 1.2 kilometres in seven minutes 27.98 seconds and placed fifth in a field of 19 runners. An interesting note is that Naoise will still be in the same age group two years from now.

Sawyer Sawatzky competed in the tyke boys race,

where they also ran 1.2 kilometres. He completed the event in 7:28.25 and placed sixth out of 23 competitors.

Bronwyn Gelber represented Passtrak in the peewee girls category, which includes athletes who are 10 and 11. She ran the two-kilometre race in 12:27.30, placing 28th out of 42 runners.

Ronan Gelber ran in the peewee boys two-kilometre race. His time of 9:00.62 placed him first out of 19 and earned him the title of provincial champion.

Mass choir needs your voice

By Brad Quarin Aspiring singers have an opportunity to sing for an appreciative audience and spread some Christmas cheer at the same time.

The Pincher Creek Carol Festival is coming to town on Dec. 13 and the carol festival committee wants you.

“All voices [are] welcome. Please come and sing,” says committee member Joan Rickard.

This is the 55th year for the carolling in Pincher Creek, which started out with church choirs giving individual performances. They later combined, allowing for a mass choir with as many as 65 or 70 voices.

Last year, the festival featured 53 carollers, up from 35 the year before. Joan credits the increase in interest to advertising and hard work. She notes that they saved the list of emails to invite singers back this year.

This year, she hopes for 50 male and female voices of any age. As this is a community choir, anyone in the community can join, she says.

There are no auditions, and joining simply requires showing up at the first practice, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Pincher Creek United Church.

Time commitment is minimal, with the practice on Tuesday and another at 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 lasting around an hour. On Dec. 13, there will be a rehearsal at 2 p.m. at Pincher Creek Community Hall. The concert will take place that evening at 7 p.m.

Community members are invited to take in the festival and make a donation to the silver collection at the door.

Livingstone team still champs of cardboard boat racing

By Brad Quarin In a spectacular feat of engineering, Livingstone School students again won gold in a southern Alberta competition to make and race cardboard boats, held in late October in Lethbridge.

Last year’s victorious team — Justin Schweb, Keegan Bachura, Jacy Oreel and Megan Hurst — had the winning design for a second year, beating 50 other teams.

A fifth member of the team, Kataya McClung, helped build the boat in the school competition. However, only teams of four were allowed in the regionals in Lethbridge, and Kataya chose a volleyball game instead of the cardboard boat races.

At the regionals, the students had to design another boat. They were provided with new cardboard, duct tape and packing tape.

They didn’t repeat the exact model that inspired their win in Pincher Creek. Instead, they adjusted the boat’s tip and gave it a thinner width.

Justin raced the boat, after which Megan, Keegan and Justin got into the craft and stayed afloat for two minutes.

The students gained valuable lessons in teamwork and are proud of their achievement.

The facilitator’s duties may include: recruiting, screening, and training mentors into the program, advocating for moms in the program, liaising with local agencies, planning events and collecting program data.

The successful candidate must have access to a vehicle, have excellent computer skills, be an effective communicator and be able to maintain confidentiality.

Communities recognized as age-friendly Submitted by Glenwood and Hill Spring Senior Services Committee

On Nov. 10, Glenwood, Hill Spring and Cardston County, along with the directors of Glenwood and Hill Spring Senior Services Committee, together became the first rural communities in Alberta to receive the Age-Friendly Alberta Recognition Award.

The award was presented by Lethbridge MLA Maria Fitzpatrick. They also join the World Health Organization Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.

The communities are committed to developing an action plan to help their seniors live active, independent and healthy lives.

Clinic teaches parents car seat safety

By Brad Quarin Child safety seats are mandatory, helping ensure a child stays safe during a car ride.

But, according to Andrea Klassen, a health promotion facilitator with Alberta Health Services, nine out of 10 child safety seats are installed incorrectly.

To help parents and educators learn about proper installation and use of a seat, she is leading a car seat education session on Thursday at First Baptist Church in Pincher Creek.

The event starts at 1:30 p.m. with an hour-long informational session. Afterwards, AHS will inspect car seats until 4 p.m., ensuring that seats are tightly in place and installed correctly and that straps are buckled properly. The height and weight of the child determine which seat should be used.

The session is free, with registration taken through the Napi Friendship Centre at 403-627-4224.

St. Michael’s cross-country running season wraps up Submitted by Alec Chisholm

Congratulations to the 30 athletes who competed for the Dragons cross-country running team from St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek.

The team won the zone banner for the second year in a row. Six athletes qualified for provincials. Eric Grier, Rebecca Lowry, and Legacy Krampl were the three athletes who were able to attend provincials north of Grande Prairie.

Their efforts resulted in St. Michael’s being ranked 11th out of 27 1A schools across the province.

Busy month at Crestview Lodge Submitted by Charmaine Tienkamp October was fantastic! We had so many volunteers and guests who came and visited us at Crestview that we cannot mention them all, but we appreciate seeing them each month, with all our hearts!

For National Seniors Day we had a small program put on by Connie Robinson and Charmaine Tienkamp, then a trio made up of Phil Lethbridge, Jackie Therriault and Ed Desjardin came and entertained us. Connie and Char gave out certificates of thanks to all residents, along with a small gift of a squeeze ball on a keychain to help exercise our arthritic hands.

We were joined by James Litkowski and his partner. James brought greetings from the Town of Pincher Creek in honour of the seniors residing at Crestview Lodge. Dancing, cake and coffee followed, with plenty of laughter. It was a festive afternoon.

Craig West Music came to entertain us on Oct. 8. Craig, his wife and their children were all very entertaining. Craig played guitar and sang, his wife played the piano, and their children sang and danced. We were all amazed by his talent as Craig is totally blind. The residents would love for them to come back again soon.

Boyd Low came the next day to entertain.

He is always fun, and plays our favourite toe-tapping oldies that we love to sing along to. He also spoils us with his jokes and fun prizes; it is an afternoon full of laughs when Boyd comes to entertain.

Pub night was on Oct. 16. The Kunkels came to entertain, all the way from the Great Canadian Barn Dance. What a delight! They don’t often get away, so when they did, we snatched them up, quick as could be. We really have many talented people here in Pincher Creek and area, and we thank them so much for treating us to their wonderful talents.

On the 21st we went to the Vista Village tea and bazaar. Congrats to Melanie Walker and staff on a great job. We had fun chatting with old friends and enjoying all the goodies placed before us to eat. When we went to do some
