Planning your perfect wedding

By Shannon Robin At a young age, many girls start dreaming of meeting their prince charming and waltzing down the aisle to a perfect wedding. Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, but can also be great fun.

The key is to be organized.

Our Wedding Extravaganza edition is a tool to connect you with area merchants who make it their business to create memorable weddings.

Using the services of an experienced wedding planner can save time and worry as you tackle the wedding to-do list. Planners offer support and peace of mind while creating the day you’ve dreamed of. They will help you stick to your budget and can recommend suppliers who are trustworthy. Best of all, you can still have a life while a planner looks after the details of your wedding.

Creating the guest list may be one of your biggest challenges. It should be based on your budget and the size of your venue, but there can

be family pressure to invite more people than you would like. One suggestion for dealing with this is to give each family a specific number of guest invitations. You’ll need to decide whether children are welcome as well as which of your guests will be invited to bring a date to the wedding.

A patient buys a new pair of glasses with lenses that have Crizal coating and Transitions tint (photochromic) and receives a free pair of prescription, antiglare, polarized sun lenses with the purchase of frame. This could be a savings of $300 to $650 depending on the type of lenses that are needed.

Six months ago, our office began providing a special diagnostic service called optical coherence tomography, or OCT. This is an essential tool for diagnosing and managing glaucoma and various retinal diseases, including macular degeneration. We are using the Cirrus HD-OCT from Zeiss, and it has really made a difference in the ability to detect early changes in eye health that would not normally be seen in routine evaluation.

The procedure is quick and easy, and eye drops are usually not needed. It is a most effective way of detecting early glaucoma and other sight-threatening retinal problems. In many cases, the fee for this procedure is covered through Alberta Health Care.

One in eight Albertan women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. The main risk factors for breast cancer are: — Being female (men, too, can develop breast cancer but it is rare).

— Age; more than 75 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer are 50 or older.

— Having a mother, sister or daughter diagnosed with breast can cer increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer. However, 80 per cent of women who develop breast cancer have no family history.

— Previous diagnosis of breast cancer.

Breast Screening Life Plan If you’re younger than 40: — Get to know how your breasts look and feel.

— See your doctor regularly for a periodic health exam.

If you’re 40 to 49: — Talk to your health-care provider about your breast cancer risk and the risks and benefits of screening mammograms.

— Get an annual physical breast exam from your health-care provider.

— Check your breasts regularly for unusual changes.

If you’re 50 to 74: — Get regular screening mammograms at least every two years.

Why should I get a screening mammogram?

A screening mammogram is a special X-ray of your breast. Once you’re over 50, it is the most effective way to find breast cancer early. Screening mammograms can detect breast cancer when it is very small, two to three years before you or your physician can feel it. The earlier breast cancer is found, the more effective treatment can be.

Screen Test is a mammography service within Alberta Health Services. Screen Test provides screening mammograms at two permanent clinics, one in Edmonton and one in Calgary. Screen Test has two mobile screening trailers that provide services to women in approximately 100 communities in rural Alberta.

Screen Test provides high-quality screening mammography and breast health education, and has consistently exceeded international standards for the early detection of breast cancer.
