Year of the Game Bird wraps up for hunters

By Brad Quarin Hunters had a chance to share their accomplishments and collect some prizes at Willow Valley Trophy Club’s 65th award day, held in January at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

“Hunting has been a way of life in this country ever since the country was settled,” says treasurer Charlie Price. The club grew out of that tradition.

“It’s to encourage people to partake in hunting.”

Members of the club throughout Alberta, including Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek, can bring in their hunting trophies, animal heads, for size competitions. Every year has a theme, such as mule deer, and this was the Year of the Game Bird.

“This year we thought we would do something different,” Charlie says.

Bird trophies themselves are somewhat different, as the whole bird is mounted, not just the head. Types of birds hunted include pheasants, geese, ducks, grouse and turkeys.

Most of the birds are judged by weight, while pheasants are judged by how long the tail is. Tom turkeys are judged by the length of the bird’s “beard,” a standard established by the Alberta Fish and Game Association.

Charlie has some neat bird trophies, including two ptarmigans mounted on a branch, and a bobcat skin and willow grouse made to look like the bobcat is hunting the bird.

There’s also a photo competition, with categories like scenery, wildlife and sportsmen.

“It’s getting bigger,” Charlie says. The Nature Conservancy of Canada sponsored the photo contest by supplying prizes like gift certificates, trophies and camera bags.

Prizes in other competitions include trophies and quality hunting knives, as well as fishing gear for the fishing competition. Altogether, prizes given out are worth over $8,000.

Winners are determined by rules established

by Boone and Crockett Club, a North American organization that tracks records for trophies.

Heads evaluated include those of mule deer, elk, moose, black bears and cougars. Since the competitions are looking for large sizes, this encourages people to hunt older animals, allowing younger ones to go on growing and breeding, Charlie says.

The guest speaker this year was Andrea Morehouse, whose work on the Southwest Alberta Grizzly Bear Monitoring Project is of interest to those hoping to open a hunt of grizzlies.

The club was founded in Willow Valley in 1949 by ranchers interested in big-game hunting. It’s grown from there, and currently has 400 members from around Alberta, aged 12 and up.

Charlie has a fond personal memory from the event. He’s been a member for 62 years, joining when he was around 15. He started out fishing because he was too young to hunt. In 1955, when he was 18, he brought in a mule deer trophy that was of record size at the time, and he was quite proud. “It’s pretty dear to me,” he says, and the pun is likely intentional.

Cadets now affiliated with military police

By Capt. Daniel Desrosiers 859 Crowsnest Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets has become the first air cadet squadron to affiliate with the military police branch of the Canadian Armed Forces.

The cadet squadron’s affiliated unit is 1 Military Police Squadron of the RCAF Military Police Group, located at 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alta. Through a closer relationship, the cadet squadron will better identify with and share pride in the affiliated unit’s activities and traditions.

859 Squadron, whose cadets hail from both Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek, enjoyed a mess dinner on Feb. 1 to formally recognize their affiliation with the military police. A mess dinner is a military tradition whereby personnel and guests enjoy good food in a formal, elegant setting.

The previous Saturday, the cadets had held a sports day that included heating and consuming ration pack meals outside in the winter cold.

Although the ration packs can be quite tasty, the cadets were nonetheless happy to enjoy a formal dinner indoors this time around.

The dinner was hosted at Country Encounters in Coleman, and the guest of honour was Capt.

Baskerville from the affiliated unit in Cold Lake.

Flight Sgt. Smith, 859 Squadron’s most senior cadet,

acted as master of ceremonies.

Representatives from the Royal Canadian Legion, RCMP, Calgary Highlanders and the squadron sponsoring committee attended the mess dinner as well. Piper Bill Plante lent an additional air of formality to the evening by “piping in” the members of the head table for the dinner.

Earlier in the day, Capt. Baskerville had taken time to explain the workings of his patrol car.

During the mess dinner, he explained the role and capabilities of the military police and presented the cadets with a military police branch flag.

The Bellevue branch of the Royal Canadian Legion also took the opportunity to present a generous donation to the squadron sponsoring committee.

Finally, to close the evening’s festivities, Cadet E. Morrow, Flight Cpl. C. Lincez and Flight Cpl. W. VanBuskirk received their bronze fitness level qualifications, Cadet J. Gray and Cadet E. Morrow received promotions in rank to leading air cadet, and Cpl. S. Bannick received a promotion in rank to flight corporal.

The aims of the air cadet program are to develop leadership and citizenship, promote physical fitness and stimulate an interest in the activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.

By Brad Quarin If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be a child with autism spectrum disorder for a day, a workshop coming to Pincher Creek may be for you.

Karen Sudom of Spectrum Educational Services is coming to the Pincher Creek library next Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., for a workshop running until 1:30.

It will be useful for parents, professionals and anyone else dealing with children with the disorder, including autism and Asperger’s syndrome, says Anne Gover.

Anne works with Parent Link and the McMan Rural FASD Lifespan Project, who are bringing Karen’s presentation to Pincher Creek for the first time.

Parents of children with special needs have been asking for a group dealing with autism, Anne says, and someone had heard Karen speak before.

Parent Link and McMan are both dedicated to supporting parents, and Anne feels the library is advanced in its thinking for sponsoring the event.

Karen, who lives in Medicine Hat, has a lot of personal interest in the subject, having two children with the disorder. Her Engaging Life Issues Autistically program involves speaking of the challenges and beauty that come with the condition. Her motto is, “Celebrate the small victories, because they rarely come in size large.”

Anne hopes those who attend will be more able to work with children with disabilities. She feels the public has plenty of awareness and compassion for the autistic, and a desire to learn more.

The workshop is free, and childcare and sandwiches will be provided. To register, contact Parent Link at 403-627-5569.

Matthew Halton students are making a difference

By Brad Quarin Many students of Matthew Halton High School wanted to take the trip to Calgary last October for We Day, an educational event to empower youth activists. Martin Luther King III and athlete Magic Johnson were among the speakers.

After a draw of names, a number of winners received a ticket, along with Grade 10 student Hayley Davis and others who went to India following last year’s We Day. Altogether, 52 students attended this year.

“It was neat to see how many people signed up for it. I didn’t really expect that many people to show interest,” says Hayley.

Another Grade 10 student who went to India and again attended We Day, Megan McGlynn, was happy to go. “It was definitely a neat experience,” she says. “It shows you that there’s other kids that are like-minded, that want to make a change, and that you have the power.”

“It makes you want to make a difference,” Hayley agrees.

Hayley and Megan are also both members

of Students Inspiring Change, a group of 37 Matthew Halton students interested in international issues. Students from each grade chose a project following the event, with SIC members talking over the possibilities and what they were passionate about.

Grade 8 and 12 students embraced the new Brick by Brick coin drive. Every $20 raised pays for a brick to help build a school. The First Student bus company donated $500 towards the effort, says teacher Hilary Matheson, for a total of $727.

Grade 7 students held their own coin drive for India, while Grade 9 students are planning a bottle drive for the women’s shelter.

For Halloween, Grade 11 students took on the We Scare Hunger campaign, going trick-ortreating for canned food donations.

Grade 10 students opted to support the local SPCA. “We all like animals,” Hayley says. “They do need funds often.”

To raise money for the SPCA, they’ve held bake sales. The sales were held at the school at lunchtime, and a few were disrupted by “snow

day” closures in December. The first two sales raised around $150, Hayley says.

“I want to go because I’ve heard the trips are amazing and change your perspective on issues,” he says. “I am very excited for the trip. I know it will be a great experience.”

In the meantime, he’ll be fundraising to pay his way.

It’s time for a Wintervention!

By Brad Quarin If the weather has you down, it may be time for a Wintervention.

Crowsnest Pass held its first winter carnival last year, and the celebrations included a dance and dinner organized by Crowsnest Can Do, a movement to establish a recreational centre in town.

In keeping with the intent to make it an annual affair, the winter carnival will return on Feb. 28 and March 1. “This year should be bigger and better,” says Wendy Valley of Crowsnest Can Do. The event doesn’t have an official name yet, but the informal term “Wintervention” has caught on. That fits the purpose of the carnival, “interrupting our long winter” before spring comes. It also brings together different groups and draws some attention to Crowsnest Pass.

This year, Crowsnest Museum is joining in, with an opening reception at 7 p.m. on Feb. 28 for their new exhibit, The Noble Experiment.

Ironically, this Prohibition-themed display will be celebrated with a cocktail party, also featuring music and a costume contest.

The Noble Experiment is a travelling exhibit combined with artifacts from Crowsnest Museum’s collection, and will be open until May 23, says the museum’s executive director, Chris Matthews.

The next morning, the Blairmore Lions will serve a tasty pancake breakfast at the Blairmore Elks Hall. The hall also serves as the starting point for a Sole Survivor fun run at 10 a.m.

Some neat little activities in Blairmore’s Gazebo Park will be continued for a second year, including the frying-pan toss. Organizers Joe and Jean Lumley are expanding that contest with a children’s category, so young ones have a chance to score some prizes.

The human dog-sled race, where people pull the sleds, is making a comeback at the gazebo as well. Everyone enjoyed last year’s, and Wendy has heard the famed local sasquatch, Passquatch, will

be participating again, “with a vengeance.”

The museum’s exhibit has put a new face on the winter carnival, inspiring a Prohibition theme for the dinner and dance on March 1. That would be a good theme for future winter carnivals, reflecting Crowsnest Pass history, Wendy feels.

Country Encounters will be serving roast beef at the Elks Hall, with music by the Calgary band Tequila Rain and a silent auction. There are 150 tickets, each costing $45, with proceeds supporting Crowsnest Can Do. It’s their main fundraiser, Wendy says. Tickets are being sold at Stone’s Throw Cafe, or you can contact her by email at wvalley@shaw.ca .

Shootin’ the Breeze and Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery are co-sponsoring a print photography contest again this year. The theme is Winter in Alberta, with categories for youth (18 and under), adult amateurs and adult professional photographers to share their view of the season.

The entry deadline is Feb. 21. Entry forms are available from Shootin’ the Breeze by calling 403904-2227, dropping in during business hours or sending an email to info@shootinthebreeze.ca.

All photos will be on display at the art gallery in Frank from Feb. 22 to March 1 to coincide with the winter festival, and at the Pincher Creek office of Shootin’ the Breeze from March 4 to 14.

Wintervention may need some volunteers, for promotion or putting up signs.

Response to the winter carnival last year was favourable, and they hope to keep adding features to it every year, including a parade.

Discover how the Boys and Girls Club stays busy

By Brad Quarin A new video posted on YouTube in January, titled “BGCCNP Gets Busy,” is shining some light on what the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club has to offer youth.

Set to some playful music by songwriter Jack Johnson, the video features children enjoying a variety of fun activities, like biking, rock climbing, curling and tobogganing.

Kiana Miskulin, a mentor with the club, created the video to show the club’s supporters how they help children lead a healthy life. The “Busy” in the title is actually an acronym for “Building the Ultimate and Sensational You.” “I love making videos — it’s one of my passions,” Kiana says, and she has a great subject. “I’ve grown up with the club.”

The movie was shot last October to December, on four different days.

The young stars of the video liked Kiana’s work, and the national club has taken notice, she says. The video was also recently shown at the local Boys and Girls Club’s annual general meeting, where it drew applause.

While the video shows the face of the club, the AGM provided a look into its inner workings.

President Scott Warris gave his report, stressing the need to keep the club sustainable and noting the co-operation between the club and others in the community. Organizations they have worked with include the municipality, schools, library, curling club, museum, Nippon Institute of Technology and Full Moon Adventure Company.

Scott has plenty of good to say about program director Nicole Pearse. “It tends to be the kids that need to be going the most [who] are the hardest to get there,” he says. “Nicole has managed to adopt some very creative methods to get these kids involved.”

Showing “definite personal interest,” Nicole sometimes calls disadvantaged families, he says. Fees can be waived and transportation can be provided, if needed. “I want to thank Nicole for the extra effort.”

The AGM also went over the sources of funding the club has, thanks again to Nicole’s work and to the sponsorships of numerous organizations.

“What really needs to be celebrated ... are the unsolicited donors,” Scott says. These include the Ecostone company in Calgary, whose owner spends weekends in the Pass and dropped a $1,000 cheque in the mail. Longtime local volunteer Wilfred Milburn sold some property and afterwards became a regular contributor. The anonymous winner of the $1,500 cash prize in the duck race last summer gave it all back to the club, being a former member himself.

At the end of the meeting, elections were held. With Scott going away for a time, he is unable to continue as a full-time president, so he and Clara Yagos put themselves forward as co-chairs. The two were acclaimed.

In his closing remarks, Scott acknowledged the difficulty of finding volunteers these days, due to lack of time, but added the club’s organization is being reformed to keep the work manageable. New positions have been created to manage the club while the board handles policy.

It’s clear a number of hard-working and generous adults keep the Boys and Girls Club running, but the focus is not on them. As Scott says, “It’s all about the kids.”

John Earle (Jack) Jenkins Sept. 6, 1923 to Jan. 30, 2014

It is with loving memories that we say goodbye to a wonderful father and grandfather. Dad passed away on Jan. 30, 2014 at Vista Village, at the age of 90.

As a young man, Jack answered his country’s call to serve in the Second World War. Injured in the Battle of Monte Cassino, he was sent to Great Britain to convalesce. It was there that he met Martha, the love of his life.

Following the war, Jack returned home to ranch and was soon joined by Martha. Together they raised four daughters and celebrated 59 years of marriage before her passing in 2007.

From the time he was a young boy, Jack spent many happy hours outdoors, fishing and hunting. He was always ready for a challenge, whether it was a game of cards, solving a puzzle or teaching himself to use the computer at the age of 80. His sense of humour lives on in his many jokes and stories. Despite a gruff exterior, Jack had a soft and compassionate side that was evident to those who knew him well.

Jack was predeceased by his infant twin brother; his wife, Martha; and his brother, Bud. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Seonaid Jenkins, Maureen (Bob) Waugh, Colleen (Jim) Hartley, Tammy Jenkins (Russell Grigg); his grandchildren, Anica (Dwayne) Robinson, Kurtis (Vicki) Dyck, Tara Waugh (Tyson Shiels), Kyla (Glen) Edwards, Jimmy (Heather) Hartley, Lindsay, Dylan and Terrance Hartley, Mikaela, Alex and Rachel Grigg; his great grandchildren, Cody, Josh and Jaedyn Robinson, Tianna, Kylee and Jack Fair and Emmett Shiels, Arianna, Conner and Trent Edwards, James Hartley; his sister, Lorraine (Jim) Pomeroy; his sister-in-law, Fay Jenkins; and many extended family and friends.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Rottger and the nurses at the hospital and to the staff at Vista Village for their care and compassion during his illness. Special gratitude also to friends Frank and Darlene for all their love and support and for being there when we could not.

A memorial service will be held on July 4, 2014.

Sharing circle teaches relaxation techniques

By Brad Quarin A new group in Crowsnest Pass is trying out meditation and breathing techniques as part of a sharing circle open to anyone.

“It’s for people to find joy and peace in their life, and to learn to be still and silence the mind,” says Valerie Slapak, who started the group in November. “It empowers oneself.”

Valerie is a healing touch practitioner, using touch to support health, and runs a home business called Sacred Connections Healing Touch Therapy in Blairmore. She says healing touch therapy is a practice used in some hospitals.

Her business is part of what led her to create the sharing circle. “I’ve always been on a spiritual journey and I’ve always somewhat meditated,” she says, but her business got her more involved in meditation.

Then, two years ago, a client gave her the book A Course in Miracles by the Foundation for Inner Peace, which was published in 1976 and has sold two million copies. She describes it as having lessons about self-realization and controlling one’s own mind, and as spiritual and centred on God, but not on any religion.

“It brought all-knowingness to me,” she says.

“I wanted to share it. I wanted to teach it.”

Still, Valerie recognizes A Course in Miracles isn’t for everyone, and some may find inspiration in other books. So, the sharing circle will be partly about book sharing, as anyone can talk about any spiritual book addressing self-realization that they read.

In the group, Valerie will lead everyone in meditating, starting with calming breathing and focusing on “guided imagery,” with one picturing

their “bio-field” or a place in nature. Afterwards, people will tell each other about what they saw.

Another part of the sharing circle is picking a piece of paper from the affirmation jar. The paper will have a message that one can repeat, “reversing negative thinking.”

The purpose is to help people relax, overcome anxiety and depression, and stimulate creative thought.

She got the group going near the end of November and had another meeting in December. These drew between eight and 10 women, a number she’s happy with. “If one person showed up, I thought it would be wonderful,” she says.

The group meets Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in Coleman, and the sharing circle is free to join.

John shares his love of marine biology next week

By Brad Quarin For his presentation in the Pincher Creek library’s winter speaker series on our biosphere, John Hancock returns to his “first love,” marine biology.

John will recount his expedition to Chagos Archipelago, a coral reef reserve in the Indian Ocean, next Tuesday at 7 p.m. Those in other communities can watch by videoconference at other libraries.

“I thought I’d be a bit different,” says the local author, usually known for talking about spiders. “I suggested ... that we ought to have something warm, and I’d be very pleased to relive this episode in my life.”

The expedition will be portrayed as a fairy tale, along the lines of Cinderella. When it happened in the late 1970s, after researcher David Bellamy’s initial expedition, John was a bus driver in London while studying at university.

“David Bellamy waved a wand,” he says, and sent four civilians to the islands, then used as training grounds for the U.K. military.

“It was a chance in a lifetime, perhaps many lifetimes,” he says. He spent four months there, under the direction of science officer Charles Sheppard.

One of his university exams was parachuted to him and he wrote it on the beach.

John’s focus at Chagos Archipelago was on echinoderms, including sea urchins and starfish, and he also studied the land crabs. “I’m interested in everything,” he says, as he found the fish he saw during the dives “amazing” and always sketched them.

During the dives, there were various species of sharks in the water. To a bus driver, rush hour meant traffic in London, but there it meant the sharks’ feeding times.
