My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin It’s election time, and hopeful candidates have been nominated for positions of service in our neck of the woods.

Most find their time in public office to be a rewarding experience.

It’s an opportunity to provide leadership, share your expertise and have a hand in shaping the future of your community. There are also great opportunities for personal growth and development that come with the territory and the experience.

On the negative side, one needs to be prepared to give up a degree of privacy once they become a representative of local government.

Even when out for a family dinner there are likely to be interjections from those who have a concern to share. You’ll be surrounded by those who elected you, and their concerns will become yours on a daily basis – you are a public servant.

One must be able to handle criticism, both constructive and judgmental. It simply comes with the territory. It will seem at times as though every move you make in your personal, professional and political lives is under scrutiny. You are expected to set a positive example and your reaction to criticism may be a gauge for how well you are doing.

One also needs to be willing to give up a significant amount of time to serve the community.

Meeting preparation may take more time than the meetings themselves, and there will always be an event or function where “official” presence is requested and appreciated. Hopefully your significant other will be happy to join you on such occasions.

Choosing to enter politics isn’t a decision to be made lightly and involves not only the candidate, but their entire family. And yes, I am speaking from personal experience here.

I’m sure every candidate running for office this term weighed the positive against the negative and decided there was more to potentially

gain than to lose.

Each candidate brings their personality to the table with them and there are many reasons people choose to run for office.

Some are inspired by a desire to contribute to society. Some are motivated by dissatisfaction with the incumbent and the belief they can do a better job. Some are passionate about a burning issue and hope to bring it to light.

It’s the job of the electorate to choose who will best represent their wants and needs for the next term.

Many positions were filled by acclamation this year. I hope this isn’t foreshadowing of low turnout at the polls as well.

Voter turnout in the area wasn’t terrific for the last municipal election, so it would be awesome to see more people exercising their right to have a say in local politics this time around.

All-candidate forums will be held in our communities, and attending these sessions is a great way to get to know the people and the faces behind the names on the ballot sheet.

Listening with an open mind and asking questions will help you to make the choices that are right for you. With some strong issues on the table, it shouldn’t be difficult to determine which candidates best represent your personal beliefs.

Those we elect to council are responsible for the health and well-being of our communities – take care and take pride in your vote.

Of course the majority will rule, but if you don’t take time to educate yourself and cast your vote, you’ve no right to complain.

This is all I plan to say about the election.

The newspapers will keep you informed of the biographies, debates and issues so there is no need to have coverage duplicated in the Breeze.

This will be the extent of our pre-election editorial coverage – a simple message of good luck to all who are in the running and of encouragement to the rest of you to get out there and vote when Oct. 21 rolls around.

A tribute to our seniors

By Brad Quarin Did you know next Tuesday is National Seniors Day in Canada?

Oct. 1 was designated by the federal government in 2010 as a time to show appreciation to our elderly citizens for their role in shaping our communities and country.

Perhaps because the day is so new, a few people I’ve talked to aren’t familiar with it, although they observe Alberta’s Seniors’ Week in June.

It may be starting to catch on, however, as Crestview Lodge in Pincher Creek will be marking the occasion. Activities co-ordinator Charmaine Tienkamp says they’re planning to celebrate with cake and coffee for residents, starting at 2 p.m.

They’ll also be presenting at least five residents with certificates thanking them for all the work they do. Many of the residents’ crafts are sold at the December tea and bazaar, raising money for Crestview’s hobby club. Other volunteer work from the residents is valued as well.

In Crowsnest Pass, the Coleman Seniors’ Hall group will celebrate the grand opening of the hall on Saturday. The historic building has been extensively refurbished and made accessible to the disabled, says president Frank Loseth. MLA Pat Stier, the mayor and town councillors are coming down for the ribbon cutting at 2 p.m., to be followed by a reception.

The official website for National Seniors Day suggests ways for families to celebrate, including spending time with seniors to play a game or go through a photo album.

Teens take Me to We to heart

By Shannon Robin Five students from Matthew Halton High School had a fantastic adventure this summer while making a difference on a global level. Far from the comfort of their Pincher Creek homes, Hayley Davis, Lisa Manners, Megan McGlynn, Paul Johnson, Yea Nee Shin and teacher Hilary Matheson experienced life in a Third World Country. They travelled to India in July as members of the Free the Children contingent.

Last fall, Lisa’s name was drawn as winner of the trip from among 18,000 Alberta students attending We Day. The prize was an opportunity for five students and one teacher to participate in Free the Children’s Adopt a Village program. The other student spots were filled through a selection process that included a written essay detailing the individual’s view of global citizenship, why he or she wanted to go, and what past experiences made them a good choice for the journey.

About 40 students applied, and Hayley, Megan, Paul and Yea Nee were chosen by school staff to join Lisa.

The entire school division got on board, holding a multitude of fundraisers over the year to support the group with their travel costs. “We came up with a plan to involve any schools that wished to help,” Lisa says. Over $1,200 was raised to assist the Pincher Creek students.

The teenagers were ambassadors of goodwill on a mission to assist with construction of a school in India. While they had an opportunity to see some amazing sights, the focus of the trip was global citizenship, and every member of the group came home with a new perspective on the privileges we enjoy in Canada.

Months of preparation included researching Indian culture, parent orientation, health clinics and securing passports and visas. This was a long process made more complex because a group of unrelated minors would be travelling with someone other than their own parents.

There were worries to contend with as well – India is a high-risk area in terms of health, and safety is an issue, particularly in light of recent rapes that have made international news headlines. Parents were assured that their children would be kept safe through a variety of measures.

The first stop was in Toronto, where they met up with other Canadian students making the trek to India. In all there were 29 teens and teachers from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. There was time for sightseeing and bonding activities before the group left for Delhi.

The first sensory experience when they arrived in India was the smell. “It was enough to gag you getting off the plane,” Hilary says.

“The country is known as one of the dirtiest in the world,” Lisa adds, so they were somewhat prepared for this. They were grateful to find the strong smells dissipated as they travelled farther into the countryside.

Although it was monsoon season, the weather treated the tourists well. “We were totally blessed and hardly got any rain,” Hilary says. It poured when they arrived in Udaipur and again when

they left, but in between they had perfect weather for sightseeing.

Their bus trips took them to see amazing sights such as the Taj Mahal and Ranakpur Jain Temple.

According to Lisa, Delhi is rated the worst place in the world to drive and bus travel was a frightening experience for the group. All the roads were paved, but vehicles touched and bounced off one another while motorcycles wove in and out of traffic. The streets were crowded with cows, oxen, bicycles, rickshaws, taxis, camels, horses with wagons, cars of all sizes and vehicles loaded with dangerous goods.

“The drivers would lay on the horn on corners, and you’d hope that someone would hear you,” Megan adds.

The students saw both ends of the spectrum – from incredible temples and extreme wealth to heartbreaking poverty.

Once their touring was finished, it was time to get to work in the village of Bagad. The community is in economic crisis, child labour is prevalent and inequality between genders means few girls receive adequate education.

The group spent three hours each day on the bus travelling back and forth from their point of accommodation to the work site.

Here they put in hours of manual labour with shovels, pickaxes, chisels and hammers. “It was really hard labour, especially in the heat,” Lisa says. “It was amazing to see it all come together and how nothing was wasted.”

They worked at a digging station, removing rocks in and around the foundation of the school, and applied 10 coats of paint to a classroom. “We worked faster than they expected us to, and organizers had to create more work for us,” Lisa says.

“If we had the equipment available to us at home we could have done all the jobs in a half hour.”

As supervisor, Hilary was proud of the hardworking attitude and enthusiasm the teens carried with them. “We were a highly appreciated and successful group,” she says. “It was noticeable and recognized that this group shone above the rest.”

INDIA, continued from page 3 crumbling and the roof needed repair. It brought home the importance of what they were achieving, even though the students left India feeling they hadn’t done enough.

Visiting with locals in the village was an interesting experience. “They didn’t know what volunteering meant, and asked if we were forced to come and work,” Hilary says.

In the Indian villages, women are responsible for gathering water in large urns they carry on their heads. Lisa says it was a fun challenge to attempt this while a “grandma was making fun and dancing” around them.

Students also observed first-hand how women are treated in this country. The men they saw sat around, talking and laughing while the women worked – gathering water, cooking, cleaning and tending the livestock.

It was clear that women are treated differently, and Megan noted that women seem almost expendable. “Men have to wear helmets on motorcycles, but women don’t. They ride sidesaddle in their saris and there are horrendous accidents.”

One of the most memorable sights came on the last day in India when the bus stopped for a caravan of Indian gypsies to pass. As far as they could see were nomads with their sheep, goats, camels and other animals making their way from the mountains back to the dessert.

This punctuated the contrasts of the country they were visiting – from Dehli where the atmosphere and dress are modern to the countryside where timeless traditions continue.

On arriving home, the girls all found themselves sick while Paul jokes that he was perfect.

They also found themselves reflecting on the experience and how they can move forward and share what they’ve learned.

Lisa returned with a new perspective. “We don’t necessarily need to deprive ourselves of luxuries we have, but we do need to appreciate them,” she says. Meeting the high priest at Jain Temple was a highlight. “He treated us like friends while we were visiting his temple,” she says.

She struggled with the feeling that they hadn’t done enough, and hated to leave the school partially finished, but at the same time realized their group wasn’t meant to build the entire thing.

Hayley says the trip was “beyond words.” She

had never flown before, let alone travelled to a foreign country. “I loved working in the village and wished we could have done more,” she says.

“It’s the coolest thing I’ve ever done, and it’s hard for my family and friends to understand totally what I got out of the trip.”

Megan was moved by “a day in the life” spent with a village girl. “I have so much more,” she says. “I learned so much and it was very personal.”

Back at home, Megan has found it difficult to explain the impact of the trip to others. “I want people to feel what I felt and to understand why this is so important.”

Paul was intrigued by the different ways people lived. “The diverse values, beliefs, languages and dialects were amazing to me,” he says.

“It bothers me that you can be born in a low class and never have the opportunity to move up, but people seemed happy with what they had.”

Yea Nee found the physical labour difficult, but it was the trip highlight for her. The challenge was in viewing the poverty. “It was hard to see the children live poorly. They didn’t have shoes, and the women work so hard.”

Hilary was amazed by the beauty and culture of the country and the way the people see the beauty in what they have. “I’ve never thought of myself as a feminist, but the amount of hard work left to the women while the men perched on the wall visiting was disturbing.”

“To change a country you have to change the mindset of the people,” Hilary says, while pointing out that 90 per cent of India’s produce goes to waste due to a lack of transportation and refrigeration. She sees things that could be done differently.

The students have created an action plan that will soon be shared with their school and the community. While Lisa and Yea Nee have moved on to university, Hayley, Megan and Paul continue to meet weekly with Hilary and other interested students.

The trip has made an impact on each student and they hope we all will remember to conserve water, to recycle and to volunteer – each one of us can join them in making a difference.

By Brad Quarin The dreams of a young Canadian athlete who captured national attention with his Marathon of Hope are remembered and are being carried on by local students. Terry Fox Runs are unfolding now throughout our area to raise money for cancer research.

Livingstone School in Lundbreck led the way on Friday, with all grades taking part in the run. It was a big success, raising $3,000 through pledges.

About 190 students ran along with parents and others in the community.

Today, Canyon School in Pincher Creek picks up the mantle with its run at 1:30 p.m., with students starting their journey from the school.

Tomorrow is prime time for the run, as Crowsnest Pass schools and St. Michael’s School will all have their runs. The St. Michael’s School run in Pincher Creek starts at 11:30 a.m.

In the Pass, students of Horace Allen School, Isabelle Sellon School and Crowsnest Consolidated High School are walking together, starting at ISS after a short assembly at 1 p.m.

Usually, a student speaks about an experience involving cancer, says ISS principal Paul Pichurski.

Each Crowsnest Pass school handles the walk a little differently, but at ISS each student is asked to bring in a “toonie for Terry.” The students walk two and a half kilometres, a distance chosen to make it possible for kindergartners.

Matthew Halton High School gets into the game on Monday, with a walk or run at 2:15 p.m.

Their students also bring in a toonie for Terry, and some may also obtain pledges, says phys-ed teacher Randy Whitehead.

The former F.M. Thompson West End Store has undergone both interior and exterior renovations lately. The historic building is on Main Street Blairmore.

Thompson building gets a facelift

By Brad Quarin A heritage building on Main Street Blairmore is still being cared for and used by the community, without sacrificing the features that make it special.

The old F.M. Thompson West End Store received a paint job last week to complete a variety of renovations, and is expecting an interesting new business this fall.

“The building has a lot of character,” says Kent Hawkins of Vancouver, who owns the Thompson store along with his brother Mark, who lives in Calgary.

Built in 1922 by West Canadian Collieries, the building has an H-shaped structure that Kent feels distinguishes it from most box-like commercial buildings. Other unusual features include its

archway and support beams, and the coal shafts in the basement.

The first business to call the building home was F.M. Thompson’s grocery store. Another part of the building was occupied by an Alberta Liquor Control Board store.

Loreena Russomanno of Crowsnest Property Management manages the building and recounts that plenty of businesses have come and gone over the years. Changes Weight Loss and Wellness Centre is located there now.

Linda Germo, who owns Changes, observes the community has a lot of history and she chose the building for her business because of its past.

The residential apartments upstairs have housed wonderful people, Loreena says. “One of my fondest memories of tenants was when I had

musicians living in each of the apartments.” They didn’t know each other before they moved in but soon were playing all kinds of music.

“They would leave their doors open and jam together,” Loreena says. She thinks they picked up techniques from each other. “They were actually really good and played amazingly well together.”

People leave messages on Loreena’s Facebook page, sharing that they used to live in the Thompson building, or that it was a relative’s first home.

Like many historic buildings, the Thompson apartments have been said to have friendly ghosts.

Tenants have said they hear things, see objects move or feel something touching them. “I cannot find anything in the landlord-tenant act about evicting ghosts, so they get to stay,” Loreena says.

That may not be a problem, as some people have actually wanted to live in the building because of the spirits. The benign haunting seems confined to the apartments, as Linda reports no traces of poltergeists in Changes.

The Crowsnest Historical Society found the building would qualify for historical grants, but the owners are currently carrying out the renovations without assistance. The building has a Discover Crowsnest Heritage sign, which Mark thinks is a neat local initiative.

The Hawkins brothers, originally from Calgary, wanted to invest in Crowsnest Pass and purchased the building around 2006. Kent says the contractors, electricians and others in the Pass have been a real pleasure to work with.

The work on the building is intended to preserve historical features, including the hardwood floor, the railing, window casings and bricks in the front.

Mark says they’re doing whatever they can so people can enjoy it, and to make the west side of Blairmore as busy as the east.

Ways to enjoy Alberta Culture Days

By Brad Quarin The spotlight is on arts, history and community pride from Friday to Sunday, as Alberta Culture Days gives everyone a chance to discover our province’s unique character.

The last weekend of September is a time when the Alberta government encourages and helps fund cultural events for the whole family.

In Crowsnest Pass, admission to the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre and Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery is free, and half price at the Bellevue Underground Mine on Saturday and Sunday.

Those who visit the interpretive centre can see an exhibit by the late Joane Cardinal-Schubert, a Blackfoot artist whose paintings and installations capture modern First Nations life.

Cathy Pisony, program co-ordinator at the centre, selected the travelling exhibit because the artist was born in the area, and to give some representation to aboriginal art. The exhibit will feature at least 15 pieces, and will be up until Oct. 4.

The centre is also showcasing up-and-coming singer Amy Thiessen, who was born in Calgary

and performs folksy, emotional music – shades of Joni Mitchell.

Meanwhile, the art gallery is joining forces with Groves Music and Fantin’s Funeral Chapel to put on the second annual M is For Music concert in Blairmore.

Krisztina Wood, managing director of the Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Association, explains the concert is meant to give anyone a chance to publicly perform music. No auditions are required and any style of music is welcome. The concert is not a competition, but rather a chance for blooming musicians to learn and grow.

The concert takes place at Fantin’s on Sunday at 2 p.m. and is free to attend. The location is one of the best venues in the community, as it has a good piano, nice acoustics and room for 150 people, Krisztina says. Reactions were favourable last year, with many musicians and their families coming out. To participate, call the art gallery at 403-562-2218.

by Alberta artist James Trevelyan. The fish-themed

paintings are quite abstract, and Krisztina finds them beautiful.

As usual, admission to the Lebel Gallery in Pincher Creek is free. The exhibit there is 8 × 8 × 100 by Linda Anderson-Stewart, consisting of 100 small canvases that, put together, become a challenge as well as a visual treat for the visitor. After Alberta Culture Days, the artist is coming for a reception on Oct. 10.

Pincher Creek’s Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village has celebrated Alberta Culture Days in the past, but this year opted to focus on the Harvest Festival. It went very well, bringing in 125 people, mainly families, who enjoyed the activities, says curator Farley Wuth.

Finally, admission to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump near Fort Macleod is free for all three days, says program co-ordinator Quinton Crow Shoe.

They’re celebrating the weekend as Buffalo Harvest Days, with guided tours all weekend and native dances on Saturday. That’s also the day to learn how traditional aboriginal tools were made, and to visit and have pictures taken with the raptors of Coaldale’s Alberta Birds of Prey.

Successful hike makes a bold statement Even though it was early on a Sunday morning, the energy level was high as some 50 hikers set out Sept. 15 for the summit of Table Mountain, high above Beaver Mines Lake in the Castle Special Place, southwest of Pincher Creek.

The hikers carried an 88-foot-long banner that read Protect The Castle, and unfurled it once they reached the top of Table Mountain. About noon, a small aircraft appeared, and participants whooped and waved as the plane made multiple passes to record the scene.

Despite being declared a Special Place in 1998, the Castle remains the only one of 81 Special Places that has not received its final legal designation as a protected area.

“It turned out to be a perfect fall day, and a great opportunity to make our point,” said David McNeill, one of the hike organizers. “We wanted to do something social and enjoyable that would reinforce our message that we want to see the Castle properly protected.”

“We trust and expect that the Government of Alberta’s soon-to-bereleased draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan will recommend that the Castle be protected as a combination wildland and provincial park,” added Gordon Petersen of the Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition.

The coalition co-sponsored Sunday’s event with the Bert Riggall Environmental Foundation.

Extreme horsemanship at the Cowboy Challenge

By Brad Quarin A triumph of horsemanship over obstacles will unfold for all to see when the Canadian Cowboy Challenge makes its Pincher Creek debut.

Local talent and guests will learn about the challenge in clinics on Saturday, before being put to the test on Sunday.

“It is quite a spectator sport, and quite a participants’ sport,” says Janet Watmough of the Pincher Creek Extreme Trail Club. She’s seen a challenge at the Calgary Stampede, and recalls the crowd was excited and amused to see horses running with streamers in their faces.

The Extreme Trail Club is a group of 22 local horse enthusiasts who have been practising horsemanship challenges for several months. They put on demos at the Cowboy Gathering and the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo this year, and found a lot of local interest in the challenge.

Janet points out the Canadian Cowboy Challenge Association itself is relatively new, so it’s a coup for the community to host the event.

By following the association’s guidelines, Pincher Creek can use its name and judges, who are paid through riders’ entry fees.

The challenge of the sport lies in the trust and respect between horse and rider needed to tackle the obstacles, Janet says. Some will be surprises, but typical obstacles include going over the seesaw bridge or the water bridge, where some of the bridge is in water. Pincher Creek’s agricultural society also has a mechanical cow, so participants may have to ride by it without scaring their horses.

Challenge categories range from Shooting Sprouts, for ages seven to 10, to Older than Dirt, for ages 55 and up. There are categories for novices and professionals, and the Buckin’ Crazies category for horses that have never been in a competition before.

Riders are expected from Pincher Creek and area, Calgary, British Columbia and other places. Mostly local people are registered for the clinics, where judges will explain the expectations and point system.

The challenge takes place at the Horseshoe Pavilion and is free to watch.

Missing Cats Ceelo (black cat with green eyes) and Simba (tabby) are both missing from Pineridge Crescent on the south hill of Pincher Creek.

Both are tattooed and neutered.

St. Michael’s feast

By Brad Quarin Students of St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek, their parents and the people of St. Michael’s Church will soon be able to sit down to a scrumptious feast.

The annual barbecue welcoming its attendees back to school and to the community will be held in the school cafeteria on Oct. 1.

St. Michael’s School principal Don Kuchison says the barbecue is usually held close to the Feast of St. Michael on Michaelmas, which is Sept. 29. The day honours the school’s patron saint, the archangel Michael, so mass will be held in the morning before the barbecue.

The school staff supplies and cooks the burgers, which can feed 100 to 150 people, Don estimates. This year, the feast may be opened to those in adult learning.

A new crucifix will also be blessed during the occasion. The large crucifix was handmade in Italy and purchased by the school with donations from the Knights of Columbus and Friends of St. Michael’s. The crucifix will be hung in the cafeteria.

Harvest at Ranchland Mall

By Brad Quarin Ranchland Mall in Pincher Creek is getting into the fall spirit. They’re all decorated for the season, thanks in part to Loretta Packham at Mrs. P’s, and they’re staging their very first Harvest Festival this Saturday.

The event is the brainchild of Ranchland Mall Tenants Association members, who are organizing it with help from Co-op.

The tenants are a “fairly community-minded group, and we decided we’d just like to do something fun for the community,” says Nicki Schoening, owner of C & D Floral. “It seemed like a good time of year.”

Thanks to their planning, you and the whole family can come out and enjoy a dance, make a scarecrow and maybe even adopt a pet.

The scarecrow-making contest comes courtesy of Loretta at Mrs. P’s.

You can bring your own material, not necessarily hay, and put together a friend who only wants a brain. The number of people who can enter the contest isn’t limited, as long as they register before 2 p.m., and Nicki hopes to see some creative designs. She’s making one herself, but won’t give away her strategy.

“I can’t reveal my secrets,” she says, chuckling.

Loretta figured a scarecrow contest would be fun for everyone, young and old. She cautions the scarecrows won’t be scary, as Halloween isn’t here yet. The grand prize is $200.

Nicki’s contribution to the festival is the Flo and Elmo obstacle course, for both children and adults. One person will be blindfolded while a partner gives instructions for getting through the course. It’s likely adults will be riding a garden tractor while youngsters will be pushing shopping carts. Nicki recalls Flo and Elmo activities at fairs and rodeos, and this time the prizes will be flowers, along with glow bracelets for all children who take part.

For $20, 20 people will also get to chow down on a pie provided

by Co-op in a pie-eating contest. Co-op is actually providing 40 pies, because in addition to the ones speedily eaten at the contest, each contestant will receive a pie to take home. The winner will be able to choose any charity to receive the prize money.

People outside the mall are also getting involved in the festival, with Westcastle Motors putting on a truck pull. Teams will try to pull a truck by hand. Second Chance Animal Rescue is doing an animal adoption fair, which Nicki says will be a chance to see “cute little dogs and cats.”

Music will include some old-style country, with award-nominated Alberta musician Larry Vannatta coming down, thanks to Mountain Radio. Chris Davis is bringing some rock, and Chanelle Seguin has her own style, Nicki says.

Most of the festival will take place in the mall parking lot, from noon to 7 p.m.

Gala supports historical society

By Brad Quarin It’s going to be a challenge to top last year’s Harvest of Memories, the annual gala held as a fundraiser for the Crowsnest Historical Society.

The 2012 gala was the best ever, says Chris Matthews, Crowsnest Museum’s executive director. But this year they have the benefit of a new, unique setting for the event at SpringBreak Garden Centre, the Hillcrest greenhouse.

“I think it’ll be lovely,” he says. “You can’t beat an atmosphere like that.”

The greenhouse offers more room, and it’s getting a dance floor and decorations for the event, which is on Saturday. Chris says SpringBreak had approached the historical society, offering to host the gala, and the society appreciates it.

This will be the ninth annual Harvest of Memories, and the third for Chris. He describes it as a fun night out for members of the community, with a dinner and dance that has usually raised lots of cash for the historical society.

Last year, the society grappled with the nearclosure of the museum and prevailed. It’s not in

that kind of trouble now, but last year’s strong efforts need to be maintained, Chris says. The society depends on Harvest of Memories, which always goes well.

A delicious dinner will be served by Country Encounters, and for music the gala will have a DJ from Music by Starlite. The society has previously had good bands perform at the gala, but this year wanted something different.

Auctions will also help bring in money for the historical society, with art prints and Gushul photographs up for sale. One auction will give the winner the ability to choose a photo out of 50,000 options, to be framed. The auctioneer is Bob Westrop from Pincher Creek, who brings welcome flavour to the proceedings.

The event enjoys support from businesses like Teck Coal, and of course from the people who attend. “It’s great to see the same people, and it’s great to see new people,” Chris says.

Today is the last day tickets are being sold at the museum and Copy Magic. The cost is $40 per person or $75 per couple.

Wildlife takes centre stage at Waterton

By Brad Quarin The Trail of the Great Bear leads to wolves and Flathead River Valley this weekend.

For the eighth year, Waterton Wildlife Weekend will be held at Waterton Lakes National Park, so people can see and learn about the animals there.

“It’s an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful wildlife that call Waterton home,” says Beth Towe of the Trail of the Great Bear ecotourism company, which puts on the event.

“It’s a very special weekend.”

The weekend is a combination of experts taking visitors into the field and indoor events, with live music and presentations.

A central part of the weekend will be the Missing Piece Rendezvous, taking place on Saturday at the Waterton Heritage Centre and Waterton Opera House, starting at 4 p.m.

The rendezvous is concerned with Flathead

River Valley in British Columbia, south of Sparwood and on the border with Alberta.

Since animals sometimes leave the park, there’s talk of extending Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park into the Flathead, giving animals more space to call home. The Flathead is thus the “missing piece” of the park.

Art about the Flathead will be on display at the Heritage Centre, while poems will be read and music will be performed at the opera house. The event will be hosted by Harvey Locke, an advocate of expanding the park.

During the weekend, park visitors can be taught by experts how to take pictures in the field, or learn how to carve ducks out of wood.

There will also be presentations on wildlife throughout the weekend. “They’re all dynamic and all of interest,” Beth says. The keynote speaker is Christina Eisenberg, whose studies on wolves will be highlighted, but she’ll also

talk about elk and grizzlies.

After park admission, there are fees for each activity and you can pre-register before Thursday at www.watertonwildlife.com . The Missing Piece Rendezvous is free, aside from donations.

Trail of the Great Bear, a private company based in Waterton, has provided tours for 30 years and the company also promotes conservation awareness. They started Waterton Wildlife Weekend, which is now also supported

by Parks Canada and the Waterton Natural History Association.

Beth encourages everyone to come down to Waterton for the weekend. “They can see the beautiful scenery and the fall colours,” she says.

Fall is the perfect time to dust off your camera, not only to capture the beautiful colours, but also to catch the abundant wildlife in our area.

Clockwise from bottom left: A bear stands out in the sunlight at Waterton.

This moose dunked her head repeatedly to pull tasty morsels from the bottom of a pond near Beaver Mines Lake.

The identity of this bird is up for debate. It was found at Beauvais Lake and may be a rock ptarmigan or a grouse of some kind. If you know for sure, please let us know!
