By Shannon Robin Oh my, what has happened to spring?

Over the past week, many things I saw convinced me that spring was finally on the way. I’m not so sure after the dump of snow that has come down this week.

The first sign was a lone shoe at the side of the road. I never see pieces of random footwear in the winter. I wonder why the shoes and boots never seem to be lost in pairs, and how they find their place at the side of the highway. On summer road trips we sometimes count the shoes along the road to help pass time.

Our trees have been filled with robins, and their arrival is generally correlated with the beginning of spring. But yesterday they flitted around trying to keep their feet out of the snow, no doubt wondering what the heck was going on!

As I drove through Saskatchewan last weekend, it seemed the geese were wondering the same thing as they searched for sustenance in areas that still have several feet of snow and where the water is still frozen over.

I’ve accepted that weather patterns in southwestern Alberta are much more unpredictable than what I’ve known, but it seems the weather is just a little bit messed up everywhere.

I chatted with my mom the other day about recollections of snow in May. My birthday falls in the middle of the month, and we could only recall one time when there was snow to ruin the party.

That was about 35 years ago. Right now the yards in my hometown are still filled with snow, so I’m glad I’ll be spending my birthday here.

I drove through areas near Saskatoon where the drifts are still several feet high. I wished at the time I had someone with me to pose for a picture or to jump in the snow and make an angel with me. I figured it best not to make a spectacle at the side of the highway doing this on my own.

My sister recalls having her first evening by the firepit as early as March, on a beautiful night.

On Saturday we thumbed our noses at Mother Nature and sat outside to have a beer by the fire.

We were wrapped in blankets and surrounded by snow, but we convinced ourselves it was spring

for a little while. We stayed outside until it started to rain – that’s another sign of spring, isn’t it?

Hopefully some rain will help to melt the snowdrifts in Nipawin.

Flooding is another rite of the season, and in the northeastern area of Saskatchewan it looks like there are some doozies on the way. There is significant water building up in the fields as the huge drifts begin to thaw, and many streams and rivers are already spilling over their banks.

The water wasn’t sitting still – it was running and churning, and in some places where it was deep enough there were even whitecaps.

Inevitably, there are mud puddles. Squishing through the mud is a great thing to do on a spring day. I like it enough to get past my aversion to the smell and feel of rubber boots.

I remember times when I would get myself so stuck in the deep mire that I would have to tread home in my socked feet to get something or someone to dig my boots out of the muck.

I wish I was young enough not to care that mud puddles are comprised of cold water – running through the puddles and stomping in the deepest sections is such fun if you don’t mind getting wet.

Afternoons at the schoolyard with our plastic kites and little spindles of string provided hours of entertainment when I was young. There was the exhilaration of finally getting your kite to fly and the panic when it began a nosedive to the ground.

A couple of weeks ago we watched a fellow in the field near our house flying the largest kite I’ve seen. Unlike the kites of my childhood, this one appeared to have many joints and strings – it was kind of like a marionette. It was really neat to watch him in action as he covered a huge area on foot while his kite soared overhead. I don’t think many kids have kites now, it’s really a shame.

A friend told me today that spring usually arrives after the last calf is born. I see the Last Calf Cabaret takes place this weekend, so hopefully we can look forward to welcoming the warm weather for good and bidding farewell to the snow.

The Breeze Mailbox Rope rescue team demo A rope rescue team works with other emergency responders to help rescue people from steep or mountainous terrain, from vehicles that have gone off bridges or high banks, and from industrial structures. The Pincher Creek Joint Rope Rescue Team combines resources from Pincher Creek Emergency Services and Pincher Creek Search and Rescue.

This team is looking to recruit and train new members. If you are interested in seeing what we do, the public is invited to a demonstration between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Search and Rescue Day, this Saturday, the lead-in to Emergency Preparedness Week. We will be located beside the Pincher Creek firehall and working off the Hewetson Avenue bridge. Come check it out and chat with our members.

Art around the Pass The current show at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery, Bizarre Bird Bazaar, concludes this Sunday. If you haven’t already seen the birds, come on down to the gallery. Canadian Pickers star helps out the Livingstone Ladies

Members of the Livingstone Ladies Social Club are gearing up to celebrate 100 years of women supporting one another and their communities, in June. That’s a pretty impressive milestone!

To help offset the cost of their anniversary tea and dinner, the group has teamed up with Heritage Acres Farm Museum and with Sheldon Smithens, star of television’s Canadian Pickers, for a day of deals, steals and fun.

Heritage Acres will host its second annual community garage sale May 11, starting at 9 a.m.

More than 30 tables have already been booked and you can expect to find antiques, crafts and garage sale items of all kinds.

Sheldon will give his presentation in the barn loft at 11 a.m. He plans to share stories from Canadian Pickers and offer a brief question and answer session.

Sheldon will also conduct a short, fun auction sale to generate a few dollars for the Livingstone Ladies. On the auction block will be the two quilts shown above, a handmade tablecloth crocheted

by Betty Heppner, a piece of artwork created for the event by Judy Trafford, and a basket overflowing with homemade items like pickles and jams, crocheted doilies, a braided rug, a table runner and even some fresh baked goods.

The quilts represent a tradition of the group.

Every year the women work together to create a quilt, and one lucky gal’s name is drawn as the recipient. The quilts are cherished tokens of the friendship and service shared by the women, and the two up for auction are unique treasures.

Heritage Acres is generously offering free admission to the farm museum in conjunction with the garage sale, so once the show has concluded you’ll still be able to keep yourself busy for the rest of the day.

Executive director Bill Kells says the response to Sheldon’s show has been phenomenal, and anticipates the garage sale will turn into a social day on many levels.

Lunch will be available and there are some amazing displays to see at Heritage Acres.

“We’re really looking forward to partnering with them,” Bill says. “By doing this, it’s going to bring even more people.”

Bill points out that while museum artifacts are not for sale, you just never know what the vendors might bring along.

The agricultural theme ties everything together – the Livingstone Ladies, Heritage Acres and Sheldon Smithens.

There’s more to this story than a celebrity receiving an invitation to speak at a small-town event – Sheldon and his wife, Theresa, own a home in the Porcupine Hills. Shirley Mowatt, a 55-year member of Livingstone Ladies, invited her new neighbour to join the group about four years ago, and both Sheldon and Theresa enjoy the social benefits of the community group.

“I just rave about the good work the ladies do,” Sheldon says. “For a group to survive 100 years and still be relevant is pretty amazing when you think about it. What they do knits such a strong fabric in the community.”

“We love the area and, better than that, we love our neighbours because everyone is so friendly,” he says. “I was delighted when I was asked to do the show, especially in light of the 100th anniversary.”

because that’s where their hearts are. They also point out how welcoming their neighbours treated them as newcomers.

If you’re not familiar with Canadian Pickers, you can catch Sheldon and his partner Scott Cozens on the History Channel, or visit www. canadianpickers.com . Sheldon will also be interviewed on Mountain Radio on May 8 if you’d like to learn more about the show, now in its fourth season.

While Sheldon’s television notoriety is fairly recent, he’s well known nationally for his expertise on antiques, as he carries on a tradition started by his grandparents.

“It truly is reality TV,” Sheldon says. “What you see is what you get, and nothing is staged.”

The producers are always looking for people with merchandise, but also for people with character, and this makes the show both fun and interesting to watch.

Sheldon and Scott purchase items with their own cash, and occasionally there are bummer deals, but the majority turn out OK. Once while on a ferry between Vancouver Island and the mainland, they noticed a fellow carrying a bag with a native carving sticking out the top. In minutes the cameras were rolling and Sheldon had purchased all 11 items the artist had with him.

Several hummingbirds from this purchase have been given to Sheldon and Theresa’s new neighbours here.

Sheldon has put the recognition that comes from being on national television to good use.

“I’ve really taken a lot of pride in the hundreds of benefit auctions, both large and small, I’ve helped with,” he says. “I like being able to use my talents and notoriety to help my community.”

Proceeds from Sheldon’s show and auction will help offset costs to put on the 100th anniversary tea on June 1. Club treasurer Lynn Bell says the celebration will be open to the public at no charge.

“We really appreciate him doing this fundraiser for us,” says club president Jo-Anne Elliott.

“We really didn’t have any other ideas, then Sheldon volunteered and we knew it would be a good seller.”

Lynn says tickets are starting to sell. The group voted that members would pay admission, so even Theresa will be paying to see her husband.

Only 200 tickets are available for Sheldon’s show, so it’s a wise choice to get yours in advance as there is no guarantee there will be tickets at the door. Livingstone grads are good friends

By Brad Quarin It’s an exciting time for 17 students of Livingstone School in Lundbreck.

Their high school graduation will be celebrated on Friday evening at the Pincher Creek Community Hall, marking new chapters in their lives.

The ceremonies may be all the more meaningful given the bond between the Grade 12 students and staff.

Forthcoming graduate Gabi Feller describes the 2013 class as “a big family, we all get along.” Graduating with her friends makes the occasion very exciting.

“We’re all good friends,” says Grade 12 student Taran Findlater. The students have known each other for a long time.

Administrative assistant Tanya Douglas, who’s deeply involved in planning the graduation, feels much the same way.

She’s been at Livingstone School for nearly 23 years. “I’ve seen a lot of children come in, to kindergarten, and then go all the way to Grade 12, so it’s really rewarding,” she says. “I also feel like I’m one of their parents.”

In line with the old practices of Livingstone School, Tanya helps with the grad ceremonies in various ways behind the scenes, mainly with respect to finances. However, she says it’s the grads themselves who plan most of it.

“Each year is so different,” she says, as different graduating classes have different priorities.

This year, the students are concerned mainly with the grad banquet. To help pay for that banquet and the rest of grad, the Grade 12 students had an Italian fundraiser in December that did well, Tanya says.

When Friday comes, the staff will make breakfast for the grads at the school, and the students will watch videos shot when they were in kindergarten. Those videos may cover field trips and interviews with the students, Tanya says. About seven of the grads have been at Livingstone School since kindergarten.

The students will then prepare the community hall and have their pictures taken. The banquet, catered by Chris’ Restaurant in Coleman, begins at 5 p.m., while speeches are given. It’s the Grade 11 students who serve the food, and they will receive donations from the grads for next year.

The handing out of the traditional pins comes with a twist unique to Livingstone School. Assistant principal Mary Krizan requires each grad to do something mildly embarrassing, like sing or dance. “It’s kind of like a roast up on stage,” Tanya says. “It’s all in fun.”

She describes the class of 2013 an “eclectic” bunch, with some skilled in arts, sports or academics.

Taran describes the class as mature. He has had an interest in drama, but there’s been less of that this year and more of a focus on grades, he says. After graduating, Taran wants a summer job and then an education in welding.

He’s looking forward to starting a career. “It’s just another step in life,” he says, and he’s “not really too nervous.”

Gabi says she likes to stay active and have fun, and is on the school’s volleyball and basketball teams. She says Livingstone School has a “strong team this year” in basketball. After high school, Gabi wants to work for a year and take some online business classes with SAIT. For now, though, it’s time to celebrate.

A year in review from the Pincher Creek Curling Club

By Michelle Visser Pincher Creek Curling Club’s season had several highlights.

Nine Tuesday night men’s league teams took to the ice Nov. 5 and, short of one game, played a double round robin. First place went to the Francis Cyr team, second place to the Dave Pletz team. Wednesday and Thursday nights had 16 mixed league teams. First place went to the John Taylor team and a close second to the Francis Cyr team. Both leagues had a mix of seasoned and new curlers, and great fun was had by all.

We had several young people come through our doors this season. Angela Walters had eight kids in Little Rocks, where players between the ages of eight and 18 get together and learn to curl.

There was great participation for the schools also. Matthew Halton had all their junior and senior high classes come at three different times, with about 135 students each time. They also had a mixed team and a girls’ team that practised twice a week under the coaching of Jill Klapp. St. Mike’s had their senior high classes come, with about 47 students, two or three times. They also had a girls’ team, coached by Lana Zoratti and Kyle Williams. Pincher Creek Colony brought 40 students for most of a day to give it a try.

In addition to league play, the club hosted several bonspiels. It started with a funspiel and cabaret organized by Jessie Nelson, held the last weekend of October. It was a perfect start to the season.

Jan. 25 and 26 was the combo spiel with eight men’s and eight women’s teams, including out-of-town teams from Fort Macleod and Crowsnest Pass. Two weeks later, businesses, friends and families put together 18 teams to join in a friendly little competition at the Town and Country Bonspiel, a weeklong event. March 1 and 2 was the last bonspiel, with 12 teams, including one from Fort Macleod.

Overall, it was a great season, and we would like to thank all our volunteers and supporters who made it possible. You rock!

By Joyce McFarland Last week I saw a girl downtown in short shorts and her legs were blue with cold. Our old neighbour Ted Stenson kept his parka handy until after the May storm, and in the north of England the old shepherds said “Ne’er cast a clout (warm clothes) ’til May be out.” I’m going to stick with the old-timers and will be happy to eat crow if I get to write another column in June.

The seniors centre was busy every week during April. The noon soup and a bun, hosted by John Goluk, was a success story and netted $62 for our general fund. It’s a friendly, easy mealtime with many kinds of games to follow, unless you have to rush away for a root canal or to watch the grandchildren or something.

Fifteen people played at the mid-month bingo. Barb Johnston won the 50-50 draw and Joe Bruder won the $20 jackpot. There were eight other $5 winners. Art was the caller and Virginia was the boss organizer. Smooth operation.

Ladies’ night on the 13th was just that, with cards, snacks and visiting until all hours. We plan to do this once a month.

The thing runs itself, it’s free and all ladies are welcome.

Bring something for a snack if you are in the mood.

Crib on the 18th was kinda special because it was Vernie’s birthday. She brought an angel food cake, baked with her own lily-white hands, for coffee time. She also won first prize for the crib game and her husband washed the dishes; I kid you not.

The crib tournament on April 20 was a super-good event organized by Marion Smith and her helpers, and we played with the same partners all day. Leny won the booby prize with her granddaughter Lisa, and Jack Rumsey took home $35 from the 50-50. Third prize went to Kim and Virginia, and second to newcomers Elaine Appleby and Lillian Casey.

First prize, for an almost perfect score, went to Marina and her friend Carolyn from Coaldale (the only out-of-town player). They received $40 each. The money winners, of course, were happier than all get out, but everybody was more than pleased at the lunch break when Carol served lasagna, salad and homemade bread followed by one of her fantastic desserts.

The May calendars are on the table at the centre, so please take note of the month’s special events. June Spak will serve soup and a bun at noon on Tuesday, May 14 – a nice lunch for $4, and a sociable afternoon.

The board meeting will be held on the following Tuesday.

No frills, just hard work planning for June, with president Leny Mace delegating the jobs. Please be a willing, paid-up member and volunteer.

Leaving the best to the last, you are cordially invited to our Mother’s Day tea on Saturday, May 11 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The price is $5. There will be fancy sandwiches, good china, door prizes and everything. The volunteer hostesses are going to put their best foot forward, and I have been told to behave myself, so it promises to be a lovely afternoon and a tribute to our wonderful mothers.

It’s tough to say who’s winning this hand, but in the end Lorriene and Audrey came out on top with a score of 948 in the eight-game round robin. They beat out 27 other teams to take the title this year.

Cowley Lions promote literacy and volunteerism in a big way!

In 2013, Lions clubs around the world were challenged to promote literacy in their communities, and the Cowley Lions have outdone themselves. The group donated $1,500 to the Pincher Creek Early Childhood Team to advance community literacy and volunteerism.

The money was used to purchase over 200 children’s books, which are being distributed throughout the community, and volunteer T-shirts with the slogan “Have you played with your child today?”

Coleman Legion gets medieval on Saturday

By Brad Quarin The Coleman Legion is going medieval on Crowsnest Pass this Saturday, in the latest of a series of themed dinners designed to draw more people to the Legion.

Veteran Ken Kirkpatrick and secretarytreasurer Debby Greenwood are planning the medieval banquet, complete with decorations and costumes that will take guests back to the Middle Ages.

“It’s something different,” Debby says. “Rather than put on a traditional Legion banquet – what you think of as traditional, where your food’s on a long table – it’s the theme that we’re going after, more than just the food.”

“Nobody else does them,” Ken says.

While dinners are common, Ken and Debby came up with the idea of themed dinners for the Coleman Legion. “The Legion was kind of stagnate for a while, we just came up with ideas to help get things going,” Ken says. They figured a medieval theme would be fun.

The event is open to the public, including the Legion’s regulars. It’s mostly adults interested

in these banquets, and there will be liquor. The $20 tickets were sold until last Saturday, with the money going toward food costs and to the Legion.

Roast chicken, roast potatoes, parsnips and dessert will be served. “People will not go away hungry,” Debby says. “But the twist is, of course, with it being a medieval dinner, you will be eating it with your hands.”

“They have to learn to leave their manners at the door,” Ken says. “When you eat with your fingers, it really isn’t that dainty.”

They have an experienced cook making the dinner. “These kinds of things, you get all kinds of volunteers,” Debby says.

The event will feature games and jousting, when two people on a cardboard horse will put a spear through a ring, Ken explains.

The loser of one game will be made court jester, and two other people will be crowned as king and queen. There will also be prizes for costumes. The Legion basement itself will be costumed as a castle, with flags, banners, candles and a cardboard suit of armour.

The Legion didn’t actually serve clownfish.

The first dinner brought in about 50 people and the second drew about 27. They can take in as many as 70, Ken says.

The next themed dinner at the Coleman Legion is a Hawaiian luau and pig roast on June 8.

A Nest of Needles has a new home

By Brad Quarin A Nest of Needles, a Crowsnest Pass store with a niche in yarn and notions, has a new location this month. The wool shop, run by Linda Sigsworth and supported by dedicated regulars and friends, moved from Coleman to downtown Blairmore.

The store is a resource for southwestern Alberta, with the closest similar stores being in Lethbridge and Fernie, Linda says. Her business offers products from around the world, including Japan, Peru – and Pincher Creek. Along with wool and yarn, the store sells needles, buttons and books about knitting.

It’s also a unique place because of the women who patronize it. “They’ve made this place special,” Linda says. “I like to say it’s a safe place to come.”

Wednesday afternoons are “stitch and chat” time at the store’s kitchen table, and the ladies can talk about anything. “What happens at the wool shop stays in the wool shop,” Linda says, laughing. Often about 10 women come to the stitch and chat, including some regulars. Some who come have dealt with cancer and find support at A Nest of Needles, she says.

It’s mostly women, from various age groups, who shop at the store. “People always thought it was just an old ladies’ activity, but it’s getting more and more that younger people are knitting,” Linda says. “I’ve got all walks of life.” She’d

like to see more young customers, ages eight and up.

Some women come into the store just for “a fix,” wandering about the store and feeling the yarn, she says.

Linda has been knitting since she was little, learning from her mom. “So I’ve always had a passion for knitting, crocheting, sewing,” she says, finding it creative and relaxing. “Basically, any time I sit down, I put needles in my hand.”

She is from the Edmonton area and had a career in office and clerical work. When her husband retired, they came to Crowsnest Pass in 2004.

A Nest of Needles, started by Sandra Mullen,

was open for five years in downtown Coleman.

Linda came for the stitch and chat, and became friends with Sandra. When Sandra needed parttime help, she turned to Linda. Then, about a year ago, Sandra put the store up for sale.

“I wasn’t really looking for a new career,” Linda says. “I couldn’t see the shop close.” She had never run a store, so taking over A Nest of Needles was “a whole new learning experience.”

A year later, things are going well. However, Linda opted to move the store for better exposure. “We have to face the fact that Blairmore, 20th Avenue, is the shopping centre of the municipality,” she says. The new location, at 12921 20th Ave., gets more traffic and is also closer to her Hillcrest home.

With the new location opening, there is a sale on most of the products and coffee is always available.

Linda is considering being open more hours.

Currently, the store is closed Sunday to Tuesday.

She’s also thinking of offering more classes, maybe during lunchtime.

Classes are now held Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, and Linda and a couple other women teach people to knit or crochet or do more advanced work. Unlike the stitch and chat, there are fees for the classes, to cover the teachers’ expenses.

Linda hopes to continue A Nest of Needles “as long as there’s people knitting, crocheting.”

Emergency Preparedness Week will be marked with demonstrations by Pincher Creek Emergency Services and Search and Rescue on Friday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Police Avenue between the Provincial Building and 7-Eleven will be closed for the event. There will be displays by other emergency organizations.
