My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Last weekend was all about corn and huckleberries!

Our neighbours, Pam Madsen and daughter Claire, were brave enough to come along with my daughter Jaiden and me as we hit the road Saturday to take in as many events as possible.

Our first stop was in Lundbreck at the cornfest.

Who would have thought it would be so tricky to find a significant event in a small town?

After driving up and down almost every street, we finally asked a friendly fellow where to find the festival. I’m sure he had a chuckle, knowing that we had lost our way in Lundbreck!

You couldn’t find a better lunch deal – two cheeseburgers, two drinks and the best corn on the cob I’ve eaten this summer – for less than $7.

I had hoped to get a photo of someone biting into an ear of the scrumptious corn, but during the time we were there we were the only ones eating.

A smarter person than me would have brought along a cooler. There were homemade pies for sale and I would love to have taken a strawberry and rhubarb dessert home with me. But the day had just begun, so it wasn’t an option.

We continued on our merry way to Castle Mountain and the Huckleberry Festival, where we planned to ride the chairlift and take in the last couple of hours of berry picking.

Unfortunately the chairlift was no longer running when we arrived, and apparently we had missed some excitement!

Castle Mountain Resort generates its own power for the lifts, and the voltage regulator on the new generator had failed. An auxiliary backup generator was used to remove people from the lift, which must have been quite an adventure.

How high we went on the mountain now depended entirely on our own ambition. We joined many others climbing up the steep slopes, but didn’t have any luck finding huckleberries. It probably didn’t help that we weren’t exactly sure what we were looking for!

The girls consoled themselves with thimbleberries that were easier to find and devour.

We came down with empty pails, but that was OK. A friendly stranger let us sample some of her berries and told us you needed to get up much higher to find them.

After making our bids in the silent auction and eating again, we sat and enjoyed the beautiful afternoon and the outdoor entertainment.

The music was excellent and the festival itself was a fantastic family event. Many come and spend the weekend – next year I’ll be one of them.

Back on the road, we took a side trip to Castle Falls. People were swimming, fishing, sunbathing and jumping from the rocks. It was a perfect place to be on a hot afternoon.

By the time we got to Beaver Mines, where another cornfest was in progress, we were too full to even think about eating another bite. We decided it would have to be a stop for next year.

“I don’t know how you do this!” Pam exclaimed when we arrived home. It had been a long, fun day.

The day wasn’t quite finished yet, because the boat parade at Waterton sounded like a neat thing to see. We drove out to the park to check out the evening parade, which was to feature lit boats.

I’m not sure what happened, but there was no action at the marina. We wandered along the waterfront and finally asked about it at Pat’s Gas and Cycle Rental. Pat didn’t know anything about the parade and neither did his staff.

We were disappointed, but still enjoyed the lights of the Prince of Wales Hotel against the growing darkness, and the moonlight on the water. We also drove to Marquis Hole in the dark and reminisced about our bat research adventure.

I hope no one else made a trip to the park specifically for the parade, which was listed in our calendar of events last week. The information was taken from a calendar produced by Parks Canada and the Waterton Community Association.

Brenda Shenton made a few phone calls for me Tuesday, and no one seemed sure of what had happened or not happened with regard to the parade.

She was able to confirm that the remaining Waterton events on the calendar are still a go, but it shows that it’s never a bad idea to call ahead.

The Breeze Mailbox Singers wanted The Crowsnest Pass Community Choir is a vibrant group looking for women who love to sing all types of music and want to meet new friends.

The ability to read music is not necessary and there are no auditions.

The choir will begin meeting Sept. 11 and every Tuesday afterward at 7 p.m. at the Isabel Sellon School in Blairmore.

Music and culture New friends and lasting memories were made when the Métis Nation of Alberta Association Local Council Chinook 1880 and the Great Canadian Barn Dance held the Asihâwak Music and Culture Camp, from July 29 to Aug. 1 at the resort in Hill Spring.

Success was measured with 45 music students and a lot of enthusiastic participants in the culture events. From beginner to advanced, musicians young and old honed their talents on instruments like fiddle, banjo, guitar, keyboards and accordion, wowing the crowd with their newfound skills at a final concert.

Those not taking lessons tried their hand at bannock making, beading a medicine bag, making finger-weave sash bracelets, creating medicine wheel ornaments, using a beading loom, Métis jigging, sewing a blanket coat known as a Capote and learning how to harness a horse. The most popular cultural activities, however, were learning to paddle in a voyageur canoe and taking a ride on the Red River cart. When the event was over, everyone left with a better understanding about the Métis people and the culture.

Many local businesses donated to make the event successful. Back Country Butchering provided sausage for breakfast and the Pincher Creek Co-op gave the ingredients to make the bannock.

Legacy of the Lost Creek fire

By Shannon Robin Nine years have passed since the nightmare of the Lost Creek wildfire, and for many people the memory is as clear is if it was only yesterday.

The fire burned for over a month in the summer of 2003, consuming over 21,000 hectares of mature forest, and resulting in a state of emergency being declared for Crowsnest Pass.

People were evacuated, more than once, but in the end no homes or lives were lost to the blaze and the people of the Pass proved their resiliency in the face of catastrophe.

Since then, the forest has been slowly regenerating, and researchers have been busy collecting data, watching trends and trying to learn from the experience.

The fire consumed virtually all the ground cover in the headwater regions of the Castle and Crowsnest rivers, and for the past eight years the University of Alberta Southern Rockies Watershed Project has been studying the impact of the fire on our water system.

Monday evening, forest hyrdologist Michael Wagner of SRWP shared what the research has shown to date, in a presentation at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre. The lecture was presented

by Crowsnest Conservation’s Crowsnest River Watershed Group.

The wildfire had significant human and ecological impacts, and the recovery process is providing information relevant on a global level.

Loss of the tree canopy has resulted in increased net precipitation, greater snow accumulation and more rapid melting of the snow pack.

This produces a higher quantity of water at the wrong time of year and has implications on water use, aquatic habitat and water quality and treatment.

In terms of water quality, there have been significant changes in levels of nitrogen, phosphorus

and sediments in the affected study area.

Nitrogen levels were up to five times higher for the first three years following the fire when compared with the control area. Phosphorus levels have been up to 12 times as high and continue to be high today. According to Michael, there is a “tremendous amount” of sediment in the water system – this soot and ash from the fire ultimately ends up in the Oldman Reservoir.

Algae growth has increased in streams in the burn, supporting more bugs and resulting in larger fish. This shows that an increase in stream productivity is a clear effect of salvage operations, or of a disturbance on top of a disturbance.

While fish population is difficult to monitor, it appears there have been some years when no young have been produced because the sediment can cover eggs laid in the gravel of the stream beds.

Roads are the greatest contributors of sediment, and it appears it’s not the number of trails in a given area, but how frequently they are travelled that makes a difference. Of course some people drive over bridges while others choose to drive through the streams.

“It takes an awful long time to recover,” says project leader Dr. Uldis Silins. He estimates it will be 65 to 90 years in the case of the Lost Creek fire.

As a result of this research, SRWP has been able to offer advice for water treatment and land management practices such as prescribed burning. Michael has been proud to contribute to the municipality through reports to support disasterrelief funding for flooding since 2006.

Local knowledge of watershed issues and concerns were clear in the questions posed following the presentation.

The legacy of the Lost Creek fire on regional water quality and quantity is likely to be long-lived, and we can expect to have scientists conducting research in the backyard of Crowsnest Pass for some time to come.

Successful cornfest

By Robyn Dowson Cornfest in Lundbreck was, in a word, successful. The day started out with a pancake breakfast at Lundbreck Hall, hosted by most of the municipal district councillors and some of their spouses. We had a great turnout and everyone was raving about Tara’s pancakes, as well as the sausage patties and ham. Thank you so much to all who catered the breakfast. It was greatly appreciated by the Lundbreck Citizens Council and by everyone who attended. Thank you also to Chris Davis for entertaining everyone during the breakfast.

The activities then moved over to Patton Park, where the ball tournament got underway. The concession was soon up and running, and delicious burgers were on the grill ready for the first round of ball players and spectators to have lunch.

Many thanks to Dan Cleland for being our chief cook. Delicious Taber corn was available all afternoon and we thank Chris and Shirley Hoare for looking after shucking and cooking it. Thank you also to all who helped them with the corn shucking throughout the day. Thank you so much to Diann Piwek, Anne Molnar, Robyn Dowson and Margaret Kanashiro for running the concession.

We packed up and moved back to the Lundbreck Hall for the pig roast supper. We had sold all 120 tickets by the time breakfast was over, and the hall was packed with hungry patrons.

Thanks to Barry Carney and Don Townsend of Simply Catering for roasting and slicing the pigs for us. There was a vast array of salads brought by local citizens and a fabulous meal was enjoyed by all.

Thank you To all those who made our past year a success, the Coleman Community Society extends a huge thank you. In 2011 we were pleased to put on Pumpkins in the Park and Christmas in the Park attended by hundreds. This summer couldn’t have been better with the Canada Day parade and Fun Day in the Park and a very successful and enjoyable concert by the St. Albert Community Band and the supper which followed.

We thank Gerry B. Kool from Lethbridge, who entertained us throughout the supper. Many of the seniors raved about and sang along with his old-time and country-blues music. Some even got up and danced after the supper, especially two young ladies who performed for us on stage beside Gerry.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped out in the kitchen before, during and after the meal. Thanks also to everyone who helped clean up the hall and the concession building on Sunday, after they got some much-needed rest from being on the go all day Saturday.

The Lundbreck Citizens Council also made the draw for the 50/50 ticket fundraiser.

They didn’t quite make the 3,000 ticket limit, but came very close by selling 2,884 of them.

Congratulations to Lindsey Jones from Calgary, who was the lucky winner of $1,442. Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets. The proceeds go towards upkeep and maintenance of Lundbreck Hall.

Tired, hot, sunburned ball players made their way into the hall for supper later, after the two top teams battled for the gold. Hilbert Construction were the victors over the Steel Panther/Howard Brown team. The weather was a lot cooler for them to play than it was last year, when it was over 30 degrees. It sounds like the four teams that played throughout the day had a great time, and we hope you’ll come back next year.

All in all, the day went very well. Last but not least, thank you so much to George Dowson for all the organizing and running around you for Cornfest. It is very much appreciated.

On August 4th we hosted our most successful and well-attended Country Market, with 36 vendors showing off and selling their wares to well over 1,000 people. Thanks to the vendors who participated and made this a great day for everyone.

By Lieve Parisis The diamond anniversary of the Pincher Creek rodeo parade was a huge success.

On Saturday, Aug. 18 more than 100 entries paraded down crowded Main Street. Lots of horses, bands, dressed-up children, splendid cars and amazing floats made it a great show. We were honoured to have Premier Alison Redford in our parade, and Pincher Creek’s very own “coolest cop ever,” Const. Doug Sokoloski, made the 60th anniversary parade even more fun.

A treat at Stone’s Throw Cafe Heather Fletcher’s pottery is on display at Stone’s Throw Cafe in Blairmore, and Krisztina Wood, managing director of Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Association, says it’s quite a treat!

Local kids have enjoyed a series of awesome summer art classes, courtesy of Paige Chanin. You can check out their work on the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery’s Facebook page.

If you haven’t seen the Art Recycled show yet, it will remain on display at the gallery until Sept. 2. Stop in by Friday and you’ll also have the opportunity to vote for your favourite print in the Crowsnest Pass Photo Contest. The photos are excellent and it’s a tough vote to cast.

Next up at the gallery is As I See It – works by adult special-needs students from the Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge. Curators are Donna Gallant and Aaron Hagan, and the show features

colourful paintings, drawings and clay works.

The opening reception for As I See It is Sept. 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. and everyone is welcome.

Coming this fall are a variety of classes including a pottery hand building course by Vi Montgomery, a pottery wheel throwing course with Mike Oleksow, social dancing classes with Rebecca Dewey, a mixed-media and photo transfer class workshop with Natalie Kurzuk, and a Karen Taminga-Paton workshop, Artist as Meaning Maker.

Registrations are also being accepted now for M.Arty’s Market. The fall fundraising event will be held Oct. 20.

Berries on the mountain Castle Mountain was a busy place Saturday with people riding the chairlift to the top and picking huckleberries on their way down. The weekend was jam-packed with activities for the entire family and many came out to enjoy the annual Huckleberry Festival in support of the Castle Mountain Community Association.

“Cuttlefish”

By Steve Becker IT’S MAGIC Assume you’re in four spades doubled and West leads the queen of clubs. East wins with the ace and returns the nine, at which point it looks as though you’ll make the contract easily.

But when you play the king of clubs, West ruffs and shifts to the queen of diamonds. You cover with the king and ruff East’s ace, and now, with two club losers staring you in the face, it appears you must go down one. True, you could try to avert one of the losers by taking a heart finesse, but you know from the bidding that the finesse will lose.

As you study the matter more closely, however, you note that the setup has all the makings of a loser-on-loser play. The distinguishing feature of this relatively rare play is that you exchange a trick you don’t have to lose for one that you do have to lose, and

by a strange but satisfying alchemy wind up gaining a trick in the process.

So, after ruffing the diamond, you lead a trump to the ace, ruff a diamond, cash the ace of hearts, ruff a heart and then ruff dummy’s last diamond. Having attended to these details, you now lead the queen of hearts. West has no choice but to cover with the king, and you let him win the trick, discarding one of dummy’s losing clubs.

This deliberate concession of a trick you don’t have to lose is remarkably effective. West is forced to return a heart or a diamond, and in either case you discard dummy’s remaining club as you ruff in your hand. People can get along for a time, but violence is quick to erupt. This quirky, confusing, sad comedy has the women of the town secretly collaborating to keep their sons and husbands from killing each other. It’s an interesting look at the age-old human struggles inherent in today’s news, even if it comes up a bit shallow.

This broodier, dark Snow White leans heavily on CG spectacles and largescale battles. This is a shrewd move by the director, since it seems easier to coax a good performance from a flock of animated ravens than it is to get a non-perplexed expression to grace Kristen Stewart’s unemotive face.

Backyard Summer Olympics Share the spirit of the 2012 Olympic Games by testing your own athletic skills and sportsmanship with a mini Olympics in a park or your backyard. Invite friends, neighbors and cousins to join in.

Start by selecting several “events” to include in your summer games. If your kids enjoyed a favorite race or athletic competition in youth programs or camp, encourage them to teach it to the group.

Be creative so that all abilities can be included in the spirited fun.

Here are some ideas as participants “go for the gold.” On your mark. Get set. Go! Relay races Before you begin, tell the kids that the Olympic Torch Relay is a variation of relay races. Lighted on May 10, 2012, in Olympia, Greece, the Olympic Flame was carried and passed along by torch bearers until it eventually reached London for the official start of the 2012 Olympic Games.

A traditional relay race is done with teams of two or more people. It’s a great lesson in teamwork, because all members must work together to finish.

Place two sets of “bases” at either end of the yard as markers for your race.

Give one member of each team a balloon, which has to be patted into the air continually as the runner goes down the

yard, around the far base and back to the starting base. On return, the balloon is patted to the next player, who repeats the activity until everyone has had a turn.

Running and swimming Let judges watch as kids and their friends do a quick dash across the yard or a lap across a pool. Make time cards, and hold them up for each competitor, just like the real Olympics.

Jumping Place a flat marker in the middle of the yard. Each competitor should get a running start and jump from the marker.

Before the athlete moves from the landing spot, a designated judge should measure the distance from the marker to where the athlete landed. Scores can be given based on how far past the marker the person jumped.

Easing Arthritis Pain Without Medicines DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 88-yearold relative has high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation, both of which are well-controlled by medication.

She is mentally sharp but has developed arthritis in various joints.

She’s been told that she can’t take any medicine for pain because it would interfere with her medicines for blood pressure and atrial fib. I know she could have a better quality of life with less pain. Is there something she can take? -- A.H. ANSWER: I have to presume your relative has osteoarthritis, the kind of arthritis almost all older people develop. Cushioning cartilage in joints crumbles and eventually becomes functionless. Bone rubs against bone, and that is painful and stiffens joints.

Your relative ought to try heat in the form of hot baths, hot packs or heating pads. Heat lessens joint pain. If heat doesn’t do the trick for her, she should try ice packs. Heat can be left on a joint for 15 minutes; ice for 10.

If she has hip, knee or foot arthritis, padded shoes or padded shoe inserts lessen the force generated in leg joints when the foot hits the ground.

An exercise program supervised by a physical therapist will strengthen muscles around the affected joints, provide them protection and give the joints a greater range of motion.

Occupational therapists devise splints or braces that protect joints and mitigate pain. They also can suggest devices that make the tasks of daily living much less troublesome.

Has she tried anti-inflammatory medicines applied to the skin directly over an affected joint? Pennsaid lotion is one example. Some of the medicine does get into the blood, so she’ll need to have her doctor’s approval for it. It is a prescription medicine. The amount of medicine that gets into the blood is less than the amount she’d get from an oral medicine, yet a sufficient amount reaches the joint.

Creamy Potato Salad 4 pounds medium red potatoes, unpeeled 2 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/3 cup cider vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 stalks celery, thinly sliced crosswise 1. In 4-quart saucepan, place potatoes, 2 teaspoons salt and enough water to cover; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 10 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender. Drain; cool slightly.

2. Meanwhile, in large serving bowl, combine vinegar, sugar, mustard, pepper and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt.

3. When potatoes are cool enough to handle, cut each into quarters or eighths if large. Add warm potatoes to dressing in bowl; gently stir with rubber spatula until well-coated. Let potato mixture stand 30 minutes to absorb dressing, stirring occasionally.

4. Gently stir mayonnaise and celery

into potato mixture until evenly coated. Serve warm or cover and refrigerate up to 1 day to serve cold. • Each serving: About 200 calories, 8g total fat (1g saturated), 5mg cholesterol, 275mg sodium, 32g total carbs, 3g dietary fiber, 3g protein.

Rodent Woes Q: Late one night last week, my husband jumped up and said he’d seen a mouse scurry under one of the kitchen cabinets. I put a sticky trap down near the cabinet he mentioned, but haven’t caught a mouse yet. Any ideas? -- Sherry in Salem, N.H. A: Mice can be pretty good at avoiding certain traps, which, as you’ve found, is pretty frustrating. And if your husband has seen one, there’s bound to be more -- especially at this time of year, as wild creatures begin to look for places to hunker down for the winter.

If you have a professional pest-control service that visits routinely (twice per year, at least), be sure to mention the possible infestation. The serviceperson likely will put down more traps and ask you to call them if a mouse is caught.

Meantime, look for signs of mouse infestation. You likely will find their droppings in areas of the kitchen where humans don’t spend a lot of time, such as the corners of lower kitchen cabinets. You may see gnawed-on areas of the lower walls, baseboards or cabinets, or the sawdust remainders of such gnawing.

House mice also have a musky odor; if you notice this in a particular area

of the house, a nest may be nearby.

Sticky traps, or glue traps, are cost effective and quick to set up -- you simply peel back the plastic covering and set the trap face up against a wall in an area where mouse activity is indicated or has been noticed.

You also can try the more traditional “snap trap,” which can stay in place longer and be reused. Set more traps than you think you’ll need, but make sure that they’re out of reach of pets and children. Bait traps with favorite mice items like a tiny bit of cheese or a dot of peanut butter.

Another method is poisoned bait.

This is sold in several forms, but one less accessible method is to purchase sealed pellets. These are poison pellets inside a sealed container that you place inside the wall or in a location pets can’t reach but mice can. The mice chew through the container to eat the pellet.

To further reduce a mouse infestation, clean out cabinets that contain food items as well as your pantry.

Inspect containers for evidence of gnawing or other access by mice, and discard affected containers. Place grains and flour in glass or foodgrade plastic containers. Store boxed items off the floor and away from known mice access points.

Locate and seal holes in your home’s walls, exterior and interior, that are larger than 1/4 inch. For holes that can’t or should not be sealed (like soffit air vents), make sure that screens and similar barriers are in place and in good repair.

HOME TIP: Have a large gap around a pipe or a hole that you don’t have time to seal up? Tuck a piece of steel wool into the gap and tack in place with a bit of caulk.

The term “edamame” is defined as an immature green soybean. I define it as delicious!

You can find edamame in the freezer with the frozen vegetables. They come still in the pod. The pod has been boiled and salted. You simply thaw the package in the refrigerator overnight, break and squeeze the pod, and pop the beans out into your mouth. You can also buy shelled edamame that has been dry roasted to add to soups and casseroles and salads. Wasabi flavored, dry-roasted edamame is a delicious addition to air-popped popcorn.

According to the nutrition facts on a package produced by Seapoint Farms, 1/2 cup of the shelled beans has just 100 calories, 3 grams of healthy fat, 8 grams of protein and 4 grams of dietary fiber. Edamame contains calcium and is a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C and iron.

No matter how you define it, edamame is a great addition to your family’s

healthy eating repertoire. Edamame has a great blend of nutrients, which will help anyone fill up, stay full longer and reap the benefits of the other nutrients in the process. Best of all, it’s simple enough for children to make, and it’s the perfect grab-andgo snack for the whole family.

Finding Affordable Pet Health Care DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Being a retiree trying to make ends meet, it’s been hard to pay for health care for my two Corgis. Are there free clinics in my area where I can get my dogs’ shots more cheaply? -- Francis H., Oklahoma City, Okla.

DEAR FRANCIS: Low-cost and sometimes free vaccination clinics for pets are available at different times of the year across the country. These are held by public service agencies

(such as county or city shelters), though some are privately sponsored.

The clinics typically offer the immunizations required of dogs and cats (and sometimes other animals like ferrets) and license tags. Some also offer services like health checks and microchipping. Prices range from $5 to $25, on average.

The problem, of course, is finding one of these near you.

These days, the Internet is a great resource for locating announcements for low-cost clinics. However, not everyone has access to the Internet.

And sometimes, the agencies or institutions sponsoring those clinics can’t advertise widely, or are hard to locate in an Internet search.

In these cases, your best bet is to regularly check locally published newspapers and magazines that focus on your community for announcements about upcoming clinics. Another way is to call the local shelters, or the city or county government, to find out if any such clinics will be held in the

near future.

I’ll do my best to list upcoming clinics in as many locations as possible at www.pawscorner.com. In the meantime, keep checking with your local government or animal shelter for the next dates, times and locations of their low-cost clinics.
