The road ahead New Year’s morning I went looking for the perfect sunrise photo to represent the beginning of this year. At first I thought I hadn’t found what I was looking for, but on reviewing the photos realized that this one is a great representation. It doesn’t have the vibrant colour I was seeking, but instead shows that we don’t know what’s over the next hill on the road of life, and that each day offers us a new beginning and the choice of which direction we will travel. My Little Corner It’s New Year’s Eve as I’m working away at this week’s issue of the Breeze. Thinking about the past year gives me much to reflect on – so many things have happened personally, locally, nationally and internationally, and each has something to be taken away as a learning experience. The dawn of each new year puts people into a mindset for making resolutions and taking on ambitious projects. Some of us have been known to set ourselves up for failure by getting caught up in the spirit of making our lives better in some way. Rather than diving headfirst into something new, I’m going to take stock of the many positive things that I’m so fortunate to have in my life. Family is always first for me, and with the start of our new businesses this fall I know that my daughter and husband don’t always feel that’s the case. I’ve always been a bit of a doter, and with the hours spent on Shootin’ the Breeze and Mountainside Printing I haven’t been as attentive to them as they are used to. Most of the time they are understanding, but it will
be a relief for all of us when we have the help in place to allow me to be present with my family in the way that we are accustomed to. For now, I can only express my thanks to Dennis and Jaiden for allowing me to spread my wings with this new endeavour. While this adventure has meant many, many hours away from home, it has been a pleasure that I spend a good number of those hours with my big brother, Cary. He moved here in September to work in both of the new businesses, and I honestly couldn’t have done this without his help. He works the same crazy hours that I do without complaint, and we’re on the same page most of the time. Thank you Cary for all that you do for me! We were able to make a trip back to Saskatchewan for Christmas for some muchneeded time with our parents, siblings and friends. Sharing love and laughter energizes us until the next time we can make it home. I will always think of Nipawin as “home” because that’s where my family is, but Pincher Creek is beginning to feel more and more like home as we carve out our own little niche for ourselves here.
I have nothing to complain about – I have family and friends who love me unconditionally, I have created a job for myself that I can do with passion, I am a proud mother, I am healthy (even with those extra pounds!), and there is nothing material that I want for. Don’t get me wrong, I have my share of bad days, worries, hurt feelings, stress and insomnia too! I try my best not to dwell on them and to focus on the good days and the positive things. We don’t know what’s down the road for us in 2012, but I hope the surprises are pleasant and abundant, and that we all find a little bit more of the one thing I’m looking for ... more time. That means making the time for things, not expecting it to magically appear! This is one thing that I will be striving to do. I hope your Christmas season joys were many, that you took time to relax and laugh, and that the new year brings you happiness and good health. Here’s to 2012! Shannon Robin

With only two hospitals in the area delivering babies (with the exception of emergencies), it wasn’t too hard to find baby number 1, little Carleigh of Brocket who was born Jan. 2 in Pincher Creek. Mom Christa Cat Face, dad Joey Grier and big sister Callie were the first family to welcome a new member in 2012. Baby Carleigh was due on Jan. 2, and arrived right on schedule at 8:24 a.m. at the Pincher Creek Hospital. Carleigh weighed eight pounds one ounce, and is a beautiful baby. A mere 24 hours after Carleigh’s birth, her parents were tired but happy, and hoping to head home to Brocket. The birth of a child is a celebration at any time of year – congratultions to Christa and Joey!

Pincher Creek Credit Union tops up the Tree of Hope By Tom Gillespie Pincher Creek Credit Union has once again demonstrated its community support with a $3,500 donation to Windy Slopes Health Foundation’s Trees of Hope campaign. With donations from the general public, the 2011 campaign now stands at over $9,800 raised. “We’re extremely grateful to Pincher Creek Credit Union for this wonderful gift,” said foundation chairman Sandy Breckenridge. “They are there for the foundation every year and have come through for us again in 2011.” Trees of Hope has been a part of the Christmas season in Pincher Creek for 21 years, first through the hospital auxiliary and now through the foundation. Everyone is invited to make a donation to remember a loved one or send season’s greetings to friends and family. Memorials and greetings are added to a special decoration and hung on the Christmas tree in the admitting area at Pincher Creek Health Centre. Over the years, the Trees of Hope campaign has enhanced palliative care, emergency, surgical, acute care, physiotherapy and other departments at the health centre. “We have had donations by mail using our flyers, but lots of folks prefer to drop by and make their donation in

On Jan. 18 and 19, the energy and multicultural music of African Guitar Summit will take audience members on a musical ride through Africa’s heartland. The group features Canadian musicians of African origin, and guitar is only one of the instruments you’ll hear from them. Colourful and relaxing African guitar music is rapidly becoming a genre all its own and the Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod is proud to bring this show to its historic stage. African Guitar Summit exploded onto the world music scene in 2004, when CBC’s Radio On Stage program brought together “the smooth fire of Juno Award winner Alpha YaYa Diallo from Guinea, with his countryman Naby Camara on balafon; from Ghana, the elder master of the guitar, Pa Joe, with golden voice Theo Boakye, and the heartbeat of drummer Kofi Ackah; from Kenya, the Fiesta guitar of professor Adam Solomon; from Bur-
undi/Rwanda, the bluesy Mighty Popo; and from Madagascar the quicksilver guitars and harmonies of Donne Roberts and multiple Juno Award winner Madagascar Slim.” – Paquin Entertainment. Holiday greenery This year we witnessed a lot of unusual greenery over the Christmas season. Bits of snow have come and gone, but for the most part the fields are barren and lawns are in full view. The Lebel Mansion in Pincher Creek was treated to a bit of an excavation makeover this fall and the sprayed grass seed is a green contrast to the surrounding area! Temperatures will continue to be a little warmer than usual for the next week with no snow in the immediate forecast.
