SAVORING A PARK CITY SUMMER

An extra snowy winter typically translates into luscious shades of green, glorious wildflowers and toast-worthy conditions for water sports in the summer. Due to a big snowfall that extended the ski seasons at Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort, we should be in for a treat!

May we make some suggestions for the ultimate in lodging and outdoor action combinations? How about trying out the safari-style accommodations at Under Canvas at Bryce and canyoneering? Or maybe booking a full moon experience that includes hiking, yoga, a sound bath and a cacao ceremony paired with a stay at The St. Regis Deer Valley? Find out about these and more in our latest edition of Epic Adventures (page 34).

For the fashionistas in your crew, take a hard look at Utah-inspired fashion. We checked in with four apparel companies based in Park City and Salt Lake City (page 46) and a Springville business that makes stunning hats that require 25 to 30 steps (page 143).

Speaking of quality and flair, Mountain is the proud recipient of Best Visual Arts and Best Literary Arts awards in Utah’s Best of State 2024. As you may have noticed, we not only transitioned from the name Mountain Express to simply Mountain, but we’ve also been in the process of totally updating our look and will be launching a refreshed website soon.

Speaking of style, we’re thrilled to share the story of Shea and Syd McGee (page 74), creators of the wildly successful Studio McGee, an internationally known design house based in Salt Lake City. In addition to working with clients, the business has a product arm, McGee & Co.; partners with big-name brands; and has a huge social media following. If that isn’t enough, the couple has penned two books, completed two seasons of a Netflix show, and are the parents of three young daughters.

Take the time to flip through our pages and discover remarkable ways to enjoy outdoor yoga, discover where to sip a glass of wine or store your collection, and find out where journalist Michael Fenkel cranked out the final draft of his book The Art Thief and his favorite places and pastimes in Park City.

Most of all, take the time to savor the beauty of summer and fall in Park City, Heber Valley and beyond. Happy exploring!

DISCOVERING HER SPARK

HOW WOMEN OF THE WASATCH ARE CONNECTING THROUGH OUTDOOR PLAY

OUTDOOR MEETUPS TAILORED TO WOMEN AREN’T EXACTLY NEW.

But there certainly has been a resurgence in the past five or so years, witnessed through a sweep of local ladies creating space for intentional, adventurous experiences.

Today, there are more options than ever for females to gather and play outside on pavement, snow and dirt. Whether you’re looking for camaraderie, coaching, friendly encouragement or group reflection, you’re bound to find these qualities and more among three local organizations.

THE ROSE CLUB

A riff on a country club vibe, The Rose Club is much the opposite. The casual drop-in, all-levels-welcome gatherings are intended for skateboarders and snowboarders with a focus on females, but anyone is invited. The aim? To create a place where skaters and riders are comfortable to push themselves beyond their comfort zones while being in a supportive, encouraging and inviting space.

Skater Michelle Gum launched the group in July 2020, when she was hanging out at the Crossroads Skateboard & Snowboard Shop in Ogden, where her husband Austin Gum is the manager.

One day, a 17-year-old girl came in to buy her first-ever complete skate setup and said she didn’t have many friends at school and needed an outlet. An hour later, another girl the exact same age came in to buy a setup, saying the same thing.

Gum could relate to finding where she fit in. She’d grown up in the golf world, becoming a collegiate athlete in the sport. Her husband introduced Gum to skateboarding, and she quickly fell in love with the people, culture and their passion for board sports. Yet, there wasn’t an organized group in the area, especially for women, so Gum decided to start one.

“I love skating with the dudes, but I was ready to skate with

PHOTOGRAPHY

people that scream when you land something and hoot and holler when you do anything, and with dudes you miss that. They’re all skating at a really high level, which can be intimidating, and if you don’t see someone like yourself doing it, it doesn’t seem achievable,” says Gum.

She started an Instagram page for the group, and all the local skateboarders blasted about it on their social media. She was so excited to see the community support, especially with male allies supporting the cause. The group launched with Saturday meetups at a local skate park in Ogden, where folks could connect to share tips and tricks.

These days, The Rose Club typically meets at a skate park every other Saturday from May through September. They bounce around locations from Park City Skatepark to Fairmont Park Skatepark in Salt Lake City and West Valley City Skatepark, venturing as far north as Logan. On average, 20 skaters show up. While Gum mostly runs the show, she notes that “younger girls are wanting to be involved more, and I’m sharing more responsibilities with them.”

In the winter, the group meets every other Wednesday at the indoor skate park at Crossroads Skateboard & Snowboard Shop from December through April.

Another huge part of The Rose Club is the snowboard leg. The group hosts a monthly meetup to ride at a ski resort in the area. It’s no surprise to see between 25 and 30 riders come out of the woodwork for the gatherings. They also organize backyard jams that are progressive focused. “We do not host a competition, because we realized no one cares to compete — we all just want to have fun. People are hitting rails for the first time ever and doing new tricks. We took the rails from the skate park and set them up in the snow, it was great,” enthuses Gum.

All the gatherings are posted on Instagram, and anyone is welcome to join sans signups, dues or requirements.

One of Gum’s fondest memories from The Rose Club is the annual Montana skate trip in September to visit Evergreen Skateparks and camp. “All of us are super different. The only thing that unites us is skateboarding, and to have that one tie from all walks of life on a weekend camping trip where it doesn’t matter is so special. It doesn’t matter who you are, only that you skateboard and you’re a good person,” says Gum.

PARK CITY NORDIC BETTIES

If Nordic skiing has piqued your interest but remains annoyingly complicated, joining a group of motivated gals on cross-country trails might be the key. Twelve years ago, cofounder Inge Travis did just that, launching Park City Nordic Betties with her close friend, Annie Morgan, because the duo was receiving a lot of inquiries from other women wanting to learn how to Nordic ski. Travis remembers how hard it was when she first was introduced to a sport she now loves.

“Initially, my husband got me into Nordic skiing. I didn’t grow up with a ski background, and I didn’t like it the first 10 years because I didn’t understand the sport,” says Travis, who wanted to help others jumpstart Nordic skiing expertise at a smoother clip than what she had experienced.

She especially enjoys demystifying the gear — the differences between classic and skate gear can be confusing, for instance — and helping women understand ski designs and sizing. She also likes how rewarding the sport is in a group setting. “I think it’s super fun to learn something with other women outside, while you’re moving and getting exercise; plus, it’s social and you’re meeting people,” says Travis.

During Nordic Betties’ inaugural year, close to 50 skiers signed up for workshops. Today, that number reaches close to 300 women per season, though each meetup varies drastically from a couple of skiers to 10. Ski sessions are led by professional coaches — there are 20 on staff, six of which are lifelong racers or have been on the U.S. Ski Team — and are held five days weekly during the winter.

“We’re incredibly fortunate with our coaches, and we still have our core coaches from 12 years ago,” Travis shares. Participants can register for weekly skate or classic skiing meetups that last six, eight or nine weeks. All experience levels are welcome from newbies to advanced.

“We’re all learning on the fly together, laughing; group learning is great because you learn from others’ questions you never would have thought of,” says Travis, who assumed leadership of the organization in 2020, when Morgan stepped back to focus on her family.

One of Travis’ favorite parts of Nordic Betties is how the group helps to introduce Nordic skiers to nearly a dozen trail systems throughout the area, which continue to grow in and around Park City. Whether skiers are meeting up at the White Pine Touring Nordic Center or Round Valley Open Space, they’re bound to have a great experience and see the potential for lasting friendships that span seasons.

Travis adds, “It’s felt so good to run into and see these people around town — at local lunch spots sitting at a table or out hiking, biking and Nordic skiing together — because they had made connections through Nordic Betties.”

WILD WOMEN TRIBE

Walking on trails together often leads to deep conversation as the miles tick by, but some women-focused outdoor organizations weave mindfulness and vulnerability into the group’s purpose. The concept for Wild Women Tribe came to founder Renée Huang in fall 2017, and she launched the organization by winter 2018.

“I was going through personal hardship and felt like I wanted to explore relationships of more depth with women and to do it outdoors. Nature provides groundedness and has always been a part of ourselves — to be cyclical and of

the earth,” Huang says. “It makes sense for us to find comfort through reconnecting to our roots and to find empowerment through bouldering or skiing a hard line or doing something you’ve never done before.”

Participants enthusiastically embraced the idea and have consistently joined the group ever since. Today, Wild Women Tribe offers full-day workshops every weekend that are dubbed Wander excursions. The events combine outdoor activities like hiking, snowshoeing or camping with a mindfulness exercise — anything from forest meditation to sound bathing, a cacao ceremony, Wim Hof breathing and cold plunge therapy. One recent Wander theme was joyful play, featuring a winter hike led by an outdoor fitness instructor through beautiful aspen groves, ascending 1,000 feet before sledding down.

For lengthier immersions, Wild Women Tribe offers retreats with yoga instructors that last two to five nights and are held in a range of destinations from Mexico to Greece. “Our retreats are all focused on transformation and having women safely step into their own vulnerability and rekindle their passion and purpose. We get lost in serving other people — we are all moms, wives, sisters, friends and career women. We put ourselves last, so these retreats and workshop spaces are for women to serve themselves, to get quiet and to look inward,” says Huang.

Every age is welcome, and the span of ladies from their 20s to their 60s makes the groups special. “Those are the most dynamic, fun, imaginative groups because we have all these women of different decades together, holding space together and being friendly and compassionate. No one needs to worry about their fitness, ability or what they’re wearing,” she emphasizes.

Ultimately, Huang hopes that participants can find or rediscover their self-alignment and learn how to source their own inspiration, which then allows women to engage and be impactful in their own circles. For Huang, the best moments are “when I see other women find themselves again. You see it in their eyes and the way they hold themselves ... when they step into their light,” she says. It manifests as new excitement and energy.

DREAM MAKERS

PARK CITY’S NATIONAL ABILITY CENTER EMPOWERS ALL AGES AND ABILITIES

Attracted to the charm of Main Street and the abundance of recreation options, Park City is chock-full of fun finders, explorers, musicians and dreamers. Unfortunately, these opportunities often seem exclusively tailored for those who are nondisabled, leaving others wishing to participate. Since 1985, the community’s National Ability Center (NAC) has been the dream maker, committed to providing a safe, inclusive and uplifting environment for people with disabilities and making it possible for everyone to experience the joy that recreation in Utah provides.

Longtime participant and NAC Reservations Coordinator

Allie Schneider knows firsthand the transformational power of adaptive recreation. Schneider was born with spina bifida. Spina bifida occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly, leaving the bottom half of the body without feeling. At age 4, she visited the center and was put on the snow. At the time, she was using a walker and couldn’t walk unaided let alone ski down the hill.

She says, “My first feeling was oh my gosh, I’m doing this! I’m doing something that anybody else could do, and I’m doing it with my family, which is the greatest gift that the National Ability Center could have given to me.”

Schneider remembers her next thought being, “If I could do skiing, what else am I capable of doing?” She underscores, “Understanding how capable you are is an incredible gift.”

In a world where dreams bridge the gap between perceived limitations and what is possible, NAC stands as a beacon of hope with its uplifting mission to empower individuals of varying disabilities by building self-esteem, confidence and lifetime skills through sports, recreation and educational programs. Located on 26 acres at the edge of Park City, the National Ability Center Ranch and Equestrian Center is a mecca of outdoor recreation.

Cofounder Meeche White’s original dream was to help people feel better about themselves, which is exactly what happened. She says, “People didn’t think they could do something or were told that they couldn’t do something, and then they come out and go skiing or ride a horse and all of the sudden doors are wide open.” White emphasizes, “Your whole vision changes of what you think is possible.”

Last year, NAC opened McGrath Mountain Center at Park City Mountain and provided life-changing programming for more than 5,500 individuals, facilitating an incredible 30,000 experiences. The organization serves people of all ages with physical and cognitive disabilities, with more than half of the participants being children and young adults under the age of 21.

Family members are encouraged to participate, strengthening family bonds and creating a shared space for connection. There are more than 20 program options for various skill levels to choose from such as archery, rock climbing, high ropes challenge course, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, rafting, canoeing, and equestrian and summer camps to name a few.

Chief Programming and Education Officer Tracy Meier says, “Everybody should have the right to live their best life, and that means people with disabilities and their friends and families all together.”

NAC does everything it can to remove the barriers for people participating in their programs, including financial burdens. In 2023, the nonprofit awarded $640,000 in scholarships. Most importantly, the organization’s staff and participants demonstrate that everyone can experience all that Utah has to offer.

Adventure: When it comes to adventure, skip the shuttle system and see Zion National Park on a guided e-bike tour with Ride Zion Adventures. As Open Sky’s sole activity partner, guests enjoy a private tour for their group. “One of the advantages of booking through us is lobby-to-lobby service. They pick you up at Open Sky and bring you back,” says Beaty. “You get to learn things you just won’t see in a shuttle bus or in a car.”

This pedal-assisted, e-bike tour takes you up Zion Canyon, where private cars cannot drive, and shows you landmarks like the Court of the Patriarchs and Angels Landing. Reservations include door-to-door transportation in a Mercedes Sprinter van, a seasoned guide, a GoPro video of the adventure, snacks, water and a gourmet breakfast and lunch (or dinner, depending on tour timing).

Horseback Riding

Lodging: Just beyond Park City in neighboring Wanship, find The Lodge at Blue Sky, an elevated mountain retreat built on a 3,500-acre working ranch. The unique property boasts diverse lodging styles and locally driven cuisine at Yuta, where lodging guests and the public can dine. Beyond the luxurious lodging, participate in yoga classes, breathing workshops and chakra balancing to calm your body and mind. Blue Sky is also home to High West Distillery and its restaurant, Refectory, where you can take a distillery tour and sample the craft whiskies.

Adventure: The best way to explore Blue Sky’s rugged terrain is on horseback. Schedule a lesson to learn the art of natural horsemanship, where human and horse communicate through nonverbal cues. Take what you’ve learned to the hills on a guided trail ride through mountains, meadows, valleys and creeks. The experience is tailored to every rider, from beginner to expert equestrians. Follow your ride with lunch and lawn games at Blue Sky’s stable for a full day spent with these majestic animals.

Equine interactions are tailored to every rider.
The Lodge at Blue Sky also is home to High West Distillery and its restaurant, Refectory.

FROM THE GROUND UP, CREATIVE LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS PROMOTE PURPOSE-BUILT APPAREL

IT’S NO SECRET THAT LOCALS FROM PARK CITY TO SALT LAKE CITY understand how spending time outdoors provides a healthy dose of clarity and inspiration. A sweep of local apparel companies is also harnessing their connection to nature for positive impact. Through philanthropy, smallbatch manufacturing and conscious design, these active lifestyle brands are setting both local and national benchmarks.

BUILT FOR GIVING BACK

Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Cotopaxi was founded by Davis Smith in 2014. Smith’s family moved to Latin America when he was 4 years old, and their memories are full of outdoor adventure. As an accomplished e-commerce entrepreneur, Smith had experience with a variety of businesses before deciding to launch an outdoor brand that would inspire people to do good and be involved in the natural world.

Selected for the Fortune 2023 Change the World list, the company directs a portion of revenue to social impact for impoverished communities. This is achieved through the brand’s Cotopaxi Foundation, a nonprofit arm that designates funds to nonprofits specializing in healthcare, education, livelihood and more.

“Our impact is focused on human sustainability. We dedicate 1% of revenue to the Cotopaxi Foundation and its mission of supporting people impacted by poverty. We do that primarily in Latin America, where our brand roots lie, and in the U.S.,” says Cotopaxi CEO Damien Huang.

“We focus on creating lasting impact with our nonprofit partners, through programs like education for girls in Colombia, prosthetic care for underserved communities in the Amazon, and support for LGBTQ+ homeless youth in the U.S. Human sustainability also means putting people first in every way, from supporting our employees with living wages to ensuring the workers within our supply chain can thrive,” he says.

The brand organizes Questivals, adventure day races for groups that include a service component. Offering support to refugees in Utah, the company also teams up with the International Rescue Committee to provide job skills training and work opportunities. Furthermore, Cotopaxi sustainably manufactures designs by utilizing leftover factory textiles that would otherwise go to the landfill into a unique line of packs. From a design standpoint, the product developers are directly inspired by the natural world.

“The outdoors and travel are where our design team turns for inspiration, from product features oriented around the elements to colors inspired by trips to Quito, Ecuador or Austin, Texas. Many of our product designers are based in Utah — where our company headquarters is — or across the Mountain West, and all are passionate about getting outside for hiking, skiing, camping and road trips,” says Huang.

“As outdoor enthusiasts, they’re always trying to solve pain points they encounter in the outdoors when they’re building apparel. For example, easy bathroom access on an active bodysuit, stash pockets for the removable legs on our zip-off pants, or a hand strap for carrying a shell after packing it down,” he explains.

OVERCOMING APPAREL OBSTACLES

With a passion to solve problems, Edara Apparel founder Laura Nunnelly launched her apparel company to help tennis and pickleball players feel more comfortable and sophisticated at the same time. Debuted in 2020, the Park City-based line specializes in attractive, functional tennis dresses that are small-batch manufactured in the U.S. Plans include expanding into two-piece sets and golf apparel this year.

“When you look good in what you wear and if it’s functional and not distracting, you are setting yourself up for success. If something was riding up, I would need to tuck it back in. Or if it was too short, I’d be distracted. I was a recreational player, and I wanted to set myself up for decent playing,” says Nunnelly, who combined her daughters’ names, Edie and Clara, to create the brand’s name.

Typically, the tennis dresses that Nunnelly could find on the market were rather shapeless, in her opinion, and required separate shorts. As a result, the interior and exterior layers were not complimentary as the bottoms were visible and the seams created an outline. She set out to develop a dress with a defined waistband designed in conjunction with flattering undershorts.

“The shorts are connected into one piece in the dress; it’s one and done and looks like a skirt-and-shirt combo without fidgeting for it all to stay in place,” she notes. “I love when form and function are married in a fashionable way, and that epitomizes apparel with a need and purpose. Edara is meant to meet the needs of athletes while being elevated in style.”

In addition, Edara Apparel products are hyper-focused on staying safe in the sun as Nunnelly had melanoma removed from her midsection in 2017. She emphasizes, “I didn’t want to compromise sun safety on the court.”

FASHION AND FUNCTION UNITE

Raised in the Pacific Northwest, designer Marion Zaniello has always reveled in both skiing and fashion and wanted to find a way to “merge the two loves of her life,” she says. After working in the fashion industry creating women’s ready-to-wear for 25 years, from New York to Seattle, Zaniello shifted her path in 2021, three years after making Park City her home.

She introduced Team Event, a retro-inspired ski outerwear and après apparel brand. The pieces are inspired by the late seventies and early eighties. “That’s when our family moved to the Northwest and my parents made us all learn how to ski. I was envious of what everyone on the slopes was wearing,” she says.

Svelte, body-conscious skiwear with flare. The cool hot doggers. Classic red-and-navy colors. Ski suits. “I wanted to look fashionable. To wear something I could move and shred in. To stay warm and not feel confined or constrained by my outfit. That was difficult for me to find,” she says.

In reality, much of ski apparel was too baggy, which wasn’t conducive to her style. Nor could she find the most practical ski suits.

As founder and creative director of Team Event, Zaniello cherishes the creativity, engineering and teamwork involved in ground-up fashion design. During her foundational New York

City years, Zaniello “worked directly with pattern makers and cutters — the whole team was right there,” she recalls. “Nothing was sent overseas. The factories were within a one-block radius of our studio. I loved that collaboration.”

Seeing passersby wearing her concepts was the icing on the cake. “There was something so fabulous about walking down the streets of New York and seeing someone wearing one of our creations. I’ve always been into clothing as a way of expressing personal creativity and personality. I also love the outdoors,” she adds.

A career transition into the outdoor industry has come with a wave of challenges and lessons. For instance, the outdoor apparel industry operates in a more “old-fashioned way” with the sales representatives playing a bigger role between the buyers and the vendors compared to the everyday fashion industry. Also, the tactile and local aspects of creating outdoor apparel is not as feasible. Most of the factories that house the machinery required to make outdoor wear are based overseas.

“I’ve been working on finding factories that have some of that modern machinery in North America, and it’s a lot more expensive, especially producing on a small scale. My ultimate retail ends up being vastly more expensive than competitors that are much more established. It’s a challenge,” she explains.

But Zaniello wouldn’t change her trajectory. Looking ahead, she’s working on more bread-and-butter apparel pieces in addition to annual ski suits, as well as combinations of muted tones with pops of bright color for visibility on the slopes.

MOUNTAIN-INSPIRED DESIGN

Zenzee was founded in Park City by Sharon Backurz and has a boutique in Salt Lake City’s Maven District. After growing up in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Backurz bounced around New York City, San Francisco and Seattle as a graphic designer. Started as a side hustle five years ago, Backurz first focused on footwear before branching into elevated knitwear and specializing in cashmere.

Interwoven with capsule drops, which are thematic and limited-edition collections, Zenzee hosts pop-up shops from Aspen to Brooklyn and Los Angeles. The company recently introduced cashmere polos, pleated skirts and bib vests; next is a balletcore line that includes arm warmers, leg warmers and tiny sweaters, an aesthetic inspired by ballerina style.

Zenzee creations are connected to “what you wear when you live in the mountains,” Backurz says. “I was designing for my body and age. I’ll be 60 this year and I have two young women that work with me, and I think the pieces span a nice age gap — comfortable, soft things that fit nicely on the body and have nothing that will cinch you.”

In addition to small-batch knits, Backurz creates one-of-a-kind and few-of-a-kind apparel with flair through details like sequins, fringe, feathers, tie-dye, ruffles and patches. They use deadstock (rolls of unused textiles) to upcycle new pieces, make bucket hats and scrunchies from recycled fabric, and deconstruct and recreate Champion sweatshirts. She says, “We try to be creative, to add to something to give it a special life.”

With our portfolio of companies (Budget Blinds, The Tailored Closet, and Premier Garage) we are able to help make your life easier by beautifying and organizing your life with one easy stop. We provide beautiful window coverings, functional and custom closets/pantries/ offices, and organized garages through epoxy coverings and cabinetry/storage.

GET A COACH

REACH YOUR NEXT SUMMIT WITH A PASSION SPORT BY BIANCA

DUMAS
JENN DRUMMOND CONQUERING K2

If you’ve ever tried to reach a big sports or fitness goal on your own, you know that it’s great to have support. Whether you’re looking for expert guidance, accountability or emotional support, the right coach can be just the thing you need.

Park City resident Jenn Drummond found this out in a very personal way. After surviving a serious car accident unscathed, she decided to live a more authentic and adventurous life. She set the goal of climbing Mount Everest for her 40th birthday and hired coach Sarah Dunlap, who has since relocated to California, for support. “I chose to work with a coach because I was taking on a task I had limited experience with,” she says. “I wanted to borrow her confidence, her knowledge and her expertise.”

Drummond’s coach challenged her to aim even higher, so after Everest she set a goal to become the first woman to climb the Seven Second Summits — the second-highest peaks on each continent — a challenge she completed in 2023. She went on to write Break Proof, a book about her experiences.

“Having a coach opens your eyes to so many more things than just the training plan. They know the gear to bring and what questions to ask, and they get to know your personality,” she says. “Ideally, a coach helps you build foundational knowledge in many areas.”

You may be searching for skill development, enhanced confidence, injury prevention or motivation for improving your daily health. Look for the coach that can best support you, and then set off to achieve your next dream.

SPORT-SPECIFIC TRAINING

Park City’s ski slopes transform into a network of Gold-Level mountain biking trails in the summer, a designation granted by the International Mountain Bike Association, and Erica Tingey believes that riding them is more fun when you have a solid skill set.

“I don’t subscribe to practice makes perfect,” she says. “Unless you practice the right way, you’re not actually getting any better.”

Tingey’s popular Women in the Mountains courses use a series of online modules to teach riders how to properly move the bike and the body so they can practice perfectly. Weekly live coaching calls and video submissions and reviews also are available, and she has clients around the world.

Tingey quickly noticed the impact that skill development had on women’s riding. “It was changing the dynamic for them on the trail,” she says. The women she worked with were no longer scared to go fast. They also made new friends and started planning mountain biking vacations.

Trent Hickman knows you’ve got to have some baseline skills before you take on a sports vacation. Hickman owns Park City SUP, runs Pebble Beach at Deer Valley, and offers yearly surf retreats in Costa Rica. Like Tingey, his approach to board sports is to get clients doing sport-specific conditioning ahead of a trip. He also encourages classes. “I think it’s incredibly valuable to take a lesson and learn good technique because it’s just not intuitive,” says Tingey, who offers SUP lessons at Pebble Beach.

THE MENTAL SIDE

Pushing yourself toward new goals can be mentally taxing, but the right coach can help you get through it. Park City coach Jonathan Garcia of JG Athletic Development was a world championship inline skater and then became a two-time Olympic speed skater. He knows all about the pressure of competition and the self-doubt that can come with pushing yourself to new levels.

“The more I’m working with people, the more I realize it’s not just the physical side of things, it’s more the mental side. They’re under a tremendous amount of pressure these days,” he says. To that end, coaches like Garcia help their clients learn to deal with the adversity they’ll encounter in their sport, develop perseverance, and use fear as fuel.

INJURY PREVENTION

If you keep on going, you might get hurt. But a coach like Elizabeth Brandon knows that’s nothing to fear. A world-class competitive runner with a master’s in kinesiology and a physical therapy certificate, she specializes in injury prevention and recovery, along with other aspects of training, conditioning and nutrition for all sports and activities.

“We address the common areas of the body that go weak in people as they age,” she says. “If we fix those, they keep on going.”

Brandon believes weak body parts must be made strong again to prevent injury and avoid surgery. To do this, the Park City coach tests for imbalances and might prescribe subtle exercises to strengthen overlooked muscles.

LIFELONG WELLNESS

Keep in mind that coaching isn’t just for setting big goals or competing in sports.

“The trick in our field is conveying the idea that it’s not to just win the race or achieve a certain number on the scale,” says Hickman, who also does independent fitness training. “I’m probably most proud of the 60-year-old woman who starts training for the first time in her life and has no particular goal other than making an improvement in strength. Afterward, she’s blown away that she could achieve it — building real functional strength at that stage in life.”

Drummond is still out there reaching new summits. When reflecting on her use of coaches, she concludes that “the best way to have grit is to have a team.” Recently, she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with a group that included three of her five sons, ages 14, 15 and 17. Before the adventure, she had the boys work with Park City-based Ben Van Treese, founder of Off the Mountain.

“I wanted them to have that experience of getting advice from others and filtering it so it made the most sense to them,” she says. “Besides, I wanted to be their mom, and let someone else hold them accountable for the training!”

EXPLORE TAILORED WAYS TO RELAX, RESTORE AND FOCUS ON OPTIMUM HEALTH

MEN’S SELF-CARE TREATMENTS ARE OFTEN FORGOTTEN IN THE WHIRLWIND OF FEMALE-FOCUSED MANICURES, facials and more. Fortunately, Salt Lake City and Park City are havens for self-care so there is no shortage of options for men to feel refreshed and pampered and to look their best. From classic barber shop treatments to high-end aesthetics, we’ve focused on four of the many options.

HAUS OF AESTHETICS

This full-service, luxury medical spa, located in the Liberty Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City, offers endless treatments for anyone who walks in the door. However, Haus of Aesthetics offers services specifically for men to achieve a new look, realize healthy skin, seek relaxation and enhance sexual health.

Skincare ranges from facials, chemical peels, CO2RE laser resurfacing, intense pulsed light therapy and laser hair removal to dermal filler, Dysport and “brotox.” Men’s skin differs from women’s, so Haus of Aesthetics treatments are specified for each client’s needs.

In addition to all this, they offer CoolSculpting services, the only FDA-approved fat removal treatment that is nonsurgical. Through targeted freezing, fat cells are destroyed, skin is not damaged, and toxins are flushed out by the body. This process, along with laser hair removal, brotox, basic chemical peels, P-Shots and hormone replacement therapy are the most popular services for men.

use hot towels and straight razors throughout the service, taking great care with details.

“We are a judgement-free zone, and everyone is welcome at our Haus,” says Ashton Newman, spa manager. “We are results driven, have a highly trained staff and stay up on the latest and best technology in the industry … guaranteeing our results.”

BILLY’S BARBER SHOP

If you’re in Park City for a biking, hiking, fishing or golfing excursion, you may want to stay longer than planned. If that’s the case, your beard and hair may need a trim. That’s where Billy’s Barber Shop comes into play.

This traditional men’s barber shop has a simple and straightforward approach to men’s haircuts and shaves. For traditional shaves, men get to lean back in a lounge chair and start their experience with a pre-shave cream. The barbers will

“Our spa treatments don’t focus on facials and manicures,” says Billy Cregger, owner of Billy’s Barber Shop PC. “However, our haircuts and shaves include warm towels and aftershave at the end, which make it more of a traditional experience.”

And men relish the options. “It’s not something you need every day, but definitely nice to treat yourself, your spouse or significant others with a nice shaving and trimming service,” he says. “I’ve been in the business for 11 years and am very fortunate to continue to see the same clients come in and treat themselves.”

As far as products go, Billy’s Barber Shop uses a line of Jack Black men’s-specific hair and skincare products, including face washes and lotions. All skincare products are antiaging and exfoliating, and there is even eye and nighttime serums, Cregger notes.

Appointments are recommended since most people book about two weeks out, and the barber shop is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

THE ST. REGIS DEER VALLEY SPA

If you find yourself at Deer Valley Resort, make an appointment at The St. Regis Deer Valley Spa, a luxurious place to spend a few hours of downtime.

“We have a full list of treatments as part of our men’s collection,” confirms Spa Manager Shawnda Brooks. “Men don’t do self-care as frequently as women, so we do have some longer treatments that are more popular. They’re offered year-round to help with sore muscles.”

These treatments include various massages that help with performance recovery as well as skin brightening. From the full menu of men’s spa offerings, the most popular are the 50- and 80-minute performance and stress relief massages, she says.

These treatments offer CBD add-ons as well as arnica, which helps relieve sore muscles after adventure outings. The spa is also starting to add Theragun into treatments as a way to increase muscle recovery. As far as stress relief goes, smart goggles are incorporated in relaxation lounges to help with headache relief and oxygen integrated into the salt room to assist with the elevation adjustment.

“We customize all our treatments to men and women separately because there are certain things a client may or may not be comfortable with,” Brooks says. “For example, certain people have preferences on the gender of their aesthetician or masseuse. It’s important when making an appointment that you specify your preferences and comfort levels.”

Reservations are highly recommended, and private sessions for group activities such as the sound bath are available upon request. Keep an eye out for special summer and fall packages as prices change seasonally.

SALTZ PLASTIC SURGERY AND SALTZ SPA VITORIA

With locations in Salt Lake City and Park City, Saltz Plastic Surgery and Saltz Spa Vitoria has the unique status of being one of the original medical spas in the intermountain west.

“Ninety-five percent of our non-surgical and surgical treatments can be done for both male and female patients, but I think what sets us apart is our elite team — including boardcertified and world-renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Renato Saltz, experienced cosmetic injectors and aestheticians with multiple advanced certifications — who all understand men and women are different in their aging process, skin types and lifestyles,” says Executive Director Bianca Saltz-Musli.

As far as men’s treatments go, men are particularly drawn to the hair restoration practice to start. “It’s an innovative technique that leaves no scars and has an easier recovery than traditional methods,” she says. “Once they experience that, they look into offerings for Botox, Dysport, microneedling, lasers and even surgical facelifts, which all help with signs of aging, deep wrinkles, sagging skin and sun damage from Utah’s outdoor sports.”

For patients to achieve the results they are looking for it may take a series of treatments and procedures. “We love to be part of our patients’ journeys and are with them every step of the way,” emphasizes Saltz-Musli. “In fact, men are among our most satisfied patients, they often say they didn’t expect their results to look so natural and for such minimal downtime.”

OM AND AHH OUTSIDE

THE SKY IS THE LIMIT WHEN YOGA HAPPENS ON SKATES, IN A CRATER AND WITH WILD MUSTANGS

WWhen the weather warms and you’re longing to deeply breathe in fresh mountain air, look no farther than Utah. Whether you are an advanced yogi or just searching for a new way to soak up the outdoors, you won’t believe the exciting range of options to om and ahh in and around Park City. Mountain asked several local experts about the power of yoga outside the walls of a studio.

“The sky, wind and air all add elements of freedom and freshness to a yoga practice. The sun and clouds bring new colors and light to everything you see around you. All of this together provides new ways to explore your own practice,” emphasizes Lindsey Marshall, owner and founder of Eventful Yoga in Park City. Specializing in yoga practices that surround special occasions, Marshall notes, “Birthday parties, reunions and our favorite, bachelorette parties, are what often bring us to many of our mountaintop locations outside of a typical yoga studio setting. … And to explore this all surrounded by loved ones who have traveled together to celebrate makes each moment so special.”

An alfresco yoga practice also can lead to extra core strength, as uneven terrains often demand higher levels of concentration and effort, especially during balancing poses. When you’re in need of an extra, natural dose of vitamin D, soaking up some sunshine in a peaceful atmosphere is another reason an outdoor yoga session is an excellent choice.

“We need to be reminded that nothing is rushed in nature and that our own innate pace is directly connected to Mother Earth’s,” says Molly Craig, wellness supervisor for The Lodge at Blue Sky in Wanship. “The backdrop and ambiance created by nature’s beauty here in Utah changes season to season, even week to week, which supports unlimited creativity for designing unique outdoor yoga experiences. At Blue Sky, we’re fortunate to have 3,500 acres of nature’s incredible playground for our outdoor wellness experiences.”

David Belz, owner of The Shop Yoga in Park City, points to the importance of grounding, which happens when we make direct contact with a natural earth surface such as walking barefoot in the grass or lying down in the sand at the beach. “Since outdoor yoga is literally grounding your energy with the earth, it can be a game changer. When we’re practicing indoors, we are insulated from that benefit.”

We discovered a whole host of creative options for experiencing yoga in the outdoors in Park City, Midway, Salt Lake City and beyond.

YOGA INSIDE A CRATER

One of many intriguing outdoor yoga options offered by Park City Yoga Adventures, these stand-up paddleboard yoga sessions take place inside Utah Crater, a gorgeous 10,000-year-old natural hot spring in Midway. Picture sparkling blue, mineralrich waters naturally heated to 95°F and enclosed in an ancient limestone dome for a truly refreshing yoga experience.

YOGA ON A MOUNTAINTOP AT SUNRISE

Flowing through sun salutes with Eventful Yoga while watching the sun climb up the sky is a truly memorable experience. “We climb up in the dark and early dawn hours so everything around you is sleepy and quiet. By the time you get to the top, the sun is just about to rise. Rolling the mats out and starting a practice while the sun is rising over the Unita Mountains is pure magic,” Marshall says.

YOGA OUTSIDE THE STATE CAPITOL

During the summer, Salt Lake Power Yoga in Salt Lake City hosts State of Mind: Yoga at the Capitol on the southeast lawn. It’s free and suited for all levels and political persuasions. “If you’re looking for community and connection, this is an amazing outdoor yoga opportunity,” says Dillion Chase, co-owner of Salt Lake Power Yoga.

YOGA IN AN ALPINE FOREST

Imagine sensations of limitless freedom as you flow and hold weightless inversions with the help of yoga silks acting as hammocks in The Lodge at Blue Sky’s mystical alpine forest, Grove of Ganesh. “Practicing yoga outside invites guests to slow down and realign with nature’s rhythm. In our Soaring Yoga class, guests can enjoy anti-gravity yoga in hammocks hung from the trees,” explains Craig.

YOGA WITH A PUPPY

If practicing yoga while surrounded by adorable rescue puppies sounds like a perfect way to unwind, check Artic Rescue’s calendar of events. In conjunction with CorePower Yoga, this nonprofit holds Puppy Yoga at Trolley Square in Salt Lake City at various times in the year. All donations for the free event help with covering food, medical expenses, vaccines and costs

to help find homes for their rescues, which are mostly huskies and malamutes.

YOGA IN A GARDEN

The Shop Yoga hosts outdoor yoga classes in its beautiful courtyard surrounded by gardens. “Being out in the natural world has a way of heightening our senses, restoring our bodies and promoting a different sort of earth connection,” Belz explains.

YOGA ON A PADDLEBOARD

Park City SUP provides an invigorating outdoor opportunity to work your core while engaging in traditional poses on a standup paddleboard at Deer Valley’s Pebble Beach. Private and group options are available.

YOGA WITH WILD MUSTANGS

Red House Wellness is offering yoga with wild mustangs during July and September retreats. The sessions take place at Wild Heart Sanctuary, a nonprofit wild horse rescue organization in Park City. Instructors use a gentle Hatha yoga style designed to allow guests to connect with nature and the hearts of the Wild Heart Infinity Herd. Each member of this inspiring wild mustang herd has a unique rescue and survival story before finding safe haven at the sanctuary.

YOGA ON A ROOFTOP

Don’t miss this opportunity to watch stunning sunsets over the valley with summer yoga classes on the rooftop deck of Salt Lake City Public Library. It’s free but registration is required.

YOGA ON SKATES

Elise Jones, a certified roller fitness instructor and creator of NamaSkate, combines yoga, strength and balance on roller skates or blades with music playlists designed to take participants back to the happy places of their youth. Roller Fitness classes are offered through her business Utah Yoga & Wellness in Midway, and locations range from outdoors at Millcreek Commons in Millcreek and indoors at Wasatch County Recreation Center in Heber City to various pop-ups.

YOGA WITH THE SHARKS

Loveland Living Aquarium in Draper in partnership with Yoga Six, offers SEArenity Yoga for all skill levels. Although it’s not technically an outdoor environment, yoga next to the shark tank or while listening to birds chirping in the rainforest exhibit sure feels outside the norm. Bring your own mat and plan to stick around as registration includes admission to the aquarium.

Remember to check the weather and schedules with your host’s websites before heading out and don’t forget your mat, water and sunscreen. Although Utah’s magical mountain environment can be sensational for outdoor yoga, the weather can be unpredictable, so times and locations are always subject to change.

MAKING LIFE

BEAUTIFUL

VIEWING THE WORLD THROUGH THE STUDIO MCGEE LENS BY BRANDI CHRISTOFFERSEN

DDuring her first week at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, Shea McGee got a call from her brother asking if she would help him move into his new college apartment. Her brother warned, “My buddy Syd will be there and you’re going to like him, but don’t, because he’s my friend. And don’t you dare date him!” Not too surprisingly, the futile request was completely ignored.

Upon seeing each other, the sparks flew and Shea and Syd began dating the very next night. Their romance blossomed, and after a few years of courtship, the two were married. Soon the newlyweds were moving into their first apartment in Southern California.

“This was right in the midst of the recession, my marketing career was stalling, so I began using my extra time to decorate the new space,” Shea recalls. “Very quickly, however, home decorating became my main focus and passion. I became obsessed with interior design and found a new way to express my personal style.”

Thus began Shea’s new career journey and the foundation for what would eventually become the couple’s internationally known design house, Studio McGee, and later a product arm, McGee & Co.

For the next few years, Shea honed her interior design knowledge through college courses and trial and error. Slowly she formed a distinct and individual decorating style that can be described as classic interiors with a modern twist.

Then Shea and Syd had the opportunity to purchase their first house. As a fixer-upper, the property was the perfect place for Shea to experiment and sharpen her skills. “This was right at the time when Instagram was beginning to grow — not necessarily for businesses, but for personal accounts,” she says. “I began to realize that every time I posted little snippets about my home improvements, I would get a lot of engagement.”

Soon, friends and family were asking Shea to do projects for them. From there, third-party requests and referrals started coming through. As she continued to post renovations, her Instagram presence grew. Before she fully realized what was happening, Shea had become one of the most popular interior design influencers in the space. “This forged my path to grow my business through the use of social media,” she explains.

As her following increased, so did her design requests. Before long, the workload had exploded, and she needed support directing the operational and managerial side of the small company. Fortunately, a solution was right in front of her. “It became apparent that I required Syd’s knowledge and expertise to supervise the practical side of the business, which would allow me the ability to focus on the design and creativity side.”

Syd was working as the COO of a digital marketing company when he agreed to come on board, and the McGees created a mission statement that pledged “to make life beautiful for ourselves and those around us.” The determined couple promised each other they would be 100% invested in the company and plowed forward with their business plan. They sold their home in Southern California, relocated to Utah and launched Studio McGee. In 2014, Shea became chief creative officer, Syd was named chief executive officer and the company was ready for clients.

With Shea’s extensive social media presence, many Utahns were familiar with her decorating style and talent. Very quickly, Studio McGee began receiving design requests from homeowners all over the Wasatch Front and Back. Many clients and followers learned that Studio McGee was not just a decorating firm but

“ Home decorating became my main focus and passion. I became obsessed with interior design and found a new way to express my personal style.”

“ I love creating experiences in people’s homes.” –Shea McGee

also a multidisciplinary design house and content hub. An example of this is Studio McGee’s website, where Shea shares her tips, suggestions and advice to digital visitors.

Since its inception, the company has celebrated and embraced its social media roots. Studio McGee’s YouTube channel provides home tours, styling tips and McGee family content — all for the home viewer to watch on their favorite screen. From the moment the channel launched, it has been a favorite for interior design professionals and amateurs alike and grown to 450,000 subscribers, and received over 70 million views.

The YouTube channel’s meteoric rise caught the eye of Netflix and its network executives. Soon, the streaming mammoth was approaching Studio McGee with an offer for a series. After some deliberation, Shea and Syd decided to give it a go. In October 2020, Dream Home Makeover premiered to positive reviews. For four seasons, interior design enthusiasts watched as the charismatic couple helped homeowners update their living spaces with spectacular results.

The show highlighted Shea and Syd’s professional relationship, along with providing a peek into their personal life. This included a glimpse at the couple’s young family — the McGee’s have three daughters — and some of their household adventures. The mix of work with day-to-day life made the series a beloved streaming choice.

The popular series produced many fan-favorite moments. However, for Shea, one episode really stands out. “By far, the most rewarding makeover I provided happened during season three in episode two with Mary Daniels from Salt Lake City,” Shea says. “She is a woman who has given so much back to the community with her thrift store and philanthropic projects. Then on top of all that, after years of caring for her friend with cancer, her house burned down.”

Daniels was expecting a bedroom design, but Studio McGee gave her a total home makeover. This meant new furniture throughout, including items from Mary’s thrift store and the McGee & Co. collection. “With the rebuilding of her home, it was wonderful to give her a new remodel. She really deserved it, and it felt really good,” beams Shea.

She remembers another season three remodel but for a totally different reason. “My most over-the-top makeover occurred on episode three with Liz and Neal.” The design project was massive and included creative little touches to make each room unique — such as a kitchen chandelier, an oak-finished lounge and wine room, and a pink ceiling above a canopy bed. The overall design was intended to provide enjoyment for years to come. “To me that is what design is all about,” Shea emphasizes.

Dream Home Makeover wrapped in December 2022, which has allowed Studio McGee to refocus on the “the design side of things” and continue to build their following with more in-depth video content on their own YouTube channel. Today, the company has more than 200 employees and is internationally known for its interior design service and extensive portfolio of brands.

A MOUNTAIN HOME

TIPS FOR DESIGNING

Shea’s success as a social media influencer laid the groundwork for what has become Studio McGee. Known for giving ideas and advice to her followers, she shares six ideas for creating a mountain sanctuary.

Consider durability

Mountain homes are largely defined by their surroundings, which are usually on the more rugged side. When designing a mountain home, it’s important to consider how the materials you choose and the areas you carve out will stand up to the home’s surrounding environment. It’s important to have spaces of utility like mudrooms and laundry rooms and depending on the area, I love adding locker rooms and ski rooms for extra storage of the equipment that inevitably comes alongside outdoor living.

Go organic

When designing mountain homes, I lean toward materials that are neutral, natural and play off the surrounding environment. On the interior walls, I love using exposed stone with heavy grout, raw wood beams and plaster. For the furniture, look at linen, leather, wood, marble and wool.

Highlight a local artist

From a styling perspective, one of my favorite things to do in a mountain home is look for local artists to feature. They usually have a good pulse on the local aesthetic, and it’s the best way to tie culture to the design.

Embrace the mix

Mountain homes can carry a mix of design styles and eras — you can pair a new sofa with sleek legs with an antique side table and vintage rug. One of my favorite things to do in a mountain home is redefine what the typical mountain aesthetic is, and the easiest way to do that is to mix in your own personality and not get bogged down in a specific design theme. You can have timber beams (and we love these), but mix in something contemporary such as an antique piece that’s a bit ornate or a piece that’s on the funkier side.

Consider the views

If you’re building from the ground up, mountain homes give you the unique opportunity to design the footprint of the home around the views. If you’re in a more secluded area, go big on the windows and even consider doing a wall of windows if you can. The views in mountain homes can act as art.

Maximize outdoor living

Treat the exterior living spaces of your home just as you would the interior. Maximize your mountain surroundings by creating spaces where you can host, eat dinner or just sit and enjoy the view on the exterior of your home. I love adding soft goods like pillows and rugs that can be brought indoors when not in use.

to purchase individually created pieces and incorporate them into their own home decor, often buying directly from projects in the Studio McGee portfolio. Available options range from large items such as sofas and desks to small accessories like wreaths and vases.

Studio McGee has also maintained select partnerships with preeminent brands including Target, Kohler, Ann Sacks and Pura. Shea elaborates, “The Target line has been very successful. We launched in 2020, and I am the creator of the furniture, lighting, rugs and decor. We come out with a new collection seasonally, and it’s very fun and exciting.”

She teases, “I have a few more partnerships that are in the works. I can’t talk about them yet but let me just say, I am thrilled about them.”

Shea and Syd also wrote a book, Make Life Beautiful, sharing their creative process and the lessons they have learned along the way. In 2023, Shea followed it up with a second book, The Art of Home. In the coffee table book, she takes readers through the design process of each room of a house while weaving in personal stories and inspirational advice.

Speaking of advice, Shea grew her Instagram following by giving design advice, so we wondered what upcoming trend she is most excited about? “I’m embracing stripes as a neutral this summer. Striped upholstery is often put into the pattern category, but I love pairing them with heavier patterns and florals and letting them ground the assortment as if it’s a neutral,” she

shares. “This summer, you’ll see me using a lot of sophisticated pinstripes, bold cabana stripes and even multi-striped patterns like gingham and plaid.”

With how far they have come and with everything that is going on, is there anything that Studio McGee would still like to accomplish? “Since it was launched, McGee & Co. has been an e-commerce only brand. I would love to open brick-and-mortar retail stores to give our clients a place to go and to experience our products in person. I want a space where they can see and feel the pieces,” she says. “With Utah being McGee & Co.’s headquarters, I see us starting in the western United States — think Texas and west to the Pacific — and then expanding from there.”

An additional focus of the company is to enlarge their YouTube channel. “We want to deliver more in-depth design content. I love products, and I love creating experiences in people’s homes,” Shea says.

She also wants to incorporate other aspects of her life into the mix. “I love to travel. Once our girls get a bit older, I hope to be able to do much more of it and perhaps incorporate some of that into the YouTube channel.”

The McGee’s lifestyle embraces experience, style and the celebration of living. Shea shares, “Our hope is to help our followers see the world through the Studio McGee lens.”

Once you spend time in Shea and Syd’s world, it does seem that everything is brighter and more beautiful. In fact, you could compare it to seeing the world through McGee-colored glasses.

PENNING IN PARK CITY

JOURNALIST MICHAEL FINKEL’S CREATIVE HAVEN IS ON MAIN STREET

American journalist Michael Finkel made his home in Park City three years ago during the summer of 2021, and he couldn’t be happier with the choice. It was an ideal setting to finish his latest book, The Art Thief, released last summer.

“I never call myself a writer,” Finkel humbly says. “I call myself a journalist.” Despite not identifying as a writer, Finkel has penned four published books:  Alpine Circus, True Story, The Stranger in the Woods and The Art Thief. At the age of 55, he has been a journalist for 40 years, getting his start writing for both his high school and college newspapers.

When he graduated from University of Pennsylvania, his first job was with  Skiing magazine. As an associate editor, Finkel was given a pair of skis and sent around the world. “It was a small staff and everyone got to do a lot,” he says fondly. Throughout his 20s, the accumulation of so many ski excursions led him to chronicle 17 of these adventures in his first book, Alpine Circus

When asked if he is a good skier, he states, “No one is putting me in any ski movies, but I love to watch great people ski.”

After being dismissed from The New York Times  for cobbling together several quotes to create one individual, Finkel found himself as both the storyteller and the main character of his next book. Titled  True Story, the tale told is truly stranger than fiction. On the same day as his termination was made public, Finkel learned that a man on the FBI’s Most Wanted Fugitives list had been arrested in Mexico, using the alias Michael Finkel and claiming to be a writer for  The New York Times . The book was made into a movie by the same name that starred James Franco, Jonah

Hill and Felicity Jones and premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

His next book, The Stranger in the Woods, was on The New York Times Best Sellers list for five weeks. Like in his previous work, the main character opened up to Finkel in a way few others could accomplish. With persistence, Finkel got the hermit to break his 27-year silence, allowing readers to contemplate their own existence and relationship with solitude.

For his most recent tome,  The Art Thief, Finkel found his final surge of creative inspiration in Park City. “I wrote every word of the final draft of  The Art Thief from a small studio above O.P. Rockwell. I must have pulled at least 50 all-nighters,” he says.

Soon after relocating to Park City from southern France, Finkel stumbled upon the optimal location to finish his tale. “I was just wandering up and down Main Street and popped in and had a brief conversation with the owner, and he was like, ‘I have the perfect thing for you,’” recalls Finkel.

The room used to be a podcast studio and has one small window facing the alley, ideal for Finkel to write without distractions. Per Finkel’s insistence, publication day for  The Art Thief was held at Dolly’s Bookstore, just 200 yards from where he finished the book. “I probably wore a groove in the sidewalk between my office and Dolly’s,” he declares.

Finkel’s dedication to storytelling is evident not only in his published works but also in his relentless pursuit of the essence of each story. As he continues to integrate his life with the narrative of Park City, it’s clear that Finkel has found Park City to be a haven for his creative spirit.

MICHAEL FINKEL’S PARK CITY PICKS

Best Park City attribute: What I love about Park City is that as a newcomer, it’s almost expected that you will get involved and give back. It is assumed that you move to Park City and you give back either by volunteering or, if you have some money, you give it. This town punches way above its weight when it comes to involvement and philanthropy.

Favorite nonprofit: I love the Live PC Give PC event. My wife, Jill, and I also love the Kimball Arts Festival, the Egyptian Theatre and, of course, the Sundance Film Festival. My kids are even volunteers for the National Ability Center, Christian Center of Park City Thrift Store and Save Our Great Salt Lake.

Park City writer’s routine: It’s too daunting to run a marathon or write a book; you have to run one mile and do it many times. For writing, you write one page at a time and do it 300 times … with a few long strolls down Main Street in between.

Summer bucket list: I can’t believe that I get to live here. I love the mountain air. On a sunny day, I can’t get anything done because I just want to be outside. During the summer, I’m addicted to mountain biking and hiking and love to go camping with my kids.

Dine about: The newly opened Big Dipper on upper Main Street has amazing sandwiches that kept me fed and happy while I wrote The Art Thief. I highly recommend the Hot Tejana. One of my other go-to spots is Cafe Terigo, also on Main Street.

Loves most about Park City: This town is so welcoming. It was like instant community integration. I have three children. When we moved here, they were at hard ages (15, 13, 11) and did not want to move. But now they love it.

LUXE LIST

REVEL IN PARK CITY’S UPSCALE EVENTS UNDER A BLUE SKY AND UMBRELLA OF STARS

THE SUMMER AND FALL MONTHS IN PARK CITY ARE NOTHING SHORT OF EPIC. If only we could bottle them and make the blissful warm days last a little bit longer before snowflakes fly. There is no shortage of things to do so to make it easy, we came up with a luxe list for tunes, tastes, tee boxes and top-notch art.

Savor the Summit

DINNERS IN THE GARDEN

Summit Community Gardens and EATS’ location at the base of Park City’s mountains is a food-producing wonderland. One of the organization’s most popular events is Dinners in the Garden, which takes place from June 6 through August 22. These gatherings celebrate local food artisans who bring fresh flavors to the table. Guests can learn about the gardens while picnicking with friends and family, listening to live music, playing lawn games and relaxing outside with a refreshing drink. All proceeds benefit Food Farmacy.

“What makes our Dinners in the Garden so special is the way that we are able to bring folks together via a unifying love for delicious food, all while supporting access for those within our community who face food insecurity. Gathering for these dinners feels like a celebration of how the land provides for us,” says Director of Operations Kellie Hill.

Summit Community Gardens and EATS grow, harvest and donate more than 1,000 pounds of organic produce each season through its demonstration beds and also have 134 community garden plots, perennial beds, beehives and a children’s garden. The organizations work to strengthen environmental education in schools and fight hunger through the Food Farmacy and Fruit to Schools programs.

SAVOR THE SUMMIT

Take al fresco dining to a whole new elevation this summer. Park City Area Restaurant Association’s annual outdoor dinner party, known as Savor the Summit, takes place on June 22 and transforms historic Main Street into the largest outdoor dining room this side of the Wasatch. Local chefs from various restaurants offer a prix fixe menu showcasing their signature dishes and specialties. This is an exclusive opportunity to tickle your taste buds with delicious food, perfect wine pairings and ambient music while seated in the middle of Main Street. From appetizers to desserts, every course is a salute to culinary genius and creativity.

“For us, this event is all about being a part of the community, celebrating the dining scene and being outside on Main Street. It’s a lot of work putting together a menu and preparing, but we enjoy the challenge and get back more than we put in,” says Briar Handly, chef and partner at Handle Restaurant. “Seeing the guests so excited and enjoying themselves makes it all worth it.”

To participate in the culinary feast, make a reservation with the participating restaurant of your choice. Keep in mind that many restaurants sell out quickly, so it’s best to call sooner rather than later. Dinner prices vary depending on the restaurant; on average, they hover around $200 per person.

In addition to the delicious food, those 21 and older can enjoy an evening in the High West Distillery Spirits Garden, where you can sip on cocktails, wine and beer and listen to live music.

CONCERTS ON THE SLOPES AT CANYONS VILLAGE

Every year, the festival welcomes jurorselected artists from around the world with 12 different art mediums represented. Over 200 artists will converge on Park City’s Main Street on August 2-4 to share their creative talents.

“The Kimball Arts Festival is important to local artists because it enables us to connect even more deeply with our community and be inspired by one another,” says artist and author Emily Quinn Loughlin.

Apart from viewing and buying art, festival patrons can immerse themselves in artist demonstrations, art classes for kids, educational programs and live music while enjoying craft beer and artisan cuisine.

LEGENDS CELEBRITY GOLF TOUR

This series of seven three-day events around the country unites celebrities, athletes, companies and individuals for golf, competition and philanthropy. The fifth stop of the Legends Celebrity Golf Tour is at Park City Mountain Resort’s Canyons Golf Course on August 4-6. This event features VIP treatment, world-class entertainment, and the opportunity to mix and mingle while supporting the Heart of a Lion Foundation.

The event kicks off with a pairings party, where participating sponsors, celebrities and athletes get to know each other. On day two, celebrities and athletes participate in an individual tournament to win up to $50,000 for their foundation or charity. The day concludes with another pairings party, where each registered team of four is paired with a celebrity or athlete for the Legends Pro-Am Tournament on day three that features sponsored hole events such as longest drive and closest to the pin competitions and much more.

PARK CITY WINE FESTIVAL

Get ready to sip, sniff and swirl your way into fall. Sample a wide variety of incredible wines, from crisp whites to bold reds, at Park City Wine Festival from October 3-5. The event offers the chance to meet more than 100 winemakers and expand your palate during the Grand Tastings and to attend a variety of à la carte seminars and pairing events. Whether you’re searching for the perfect sauvignon blanc for a salmon dish or the best shiraz to complement your beef Wellington, recommendations are at your fingertips at this festival.

You can turn it into a luxe weekend with events such as Best of Fest and lunch, dinner and adventure pairings. Each event is ticketed individually, so you can choose your day and experience. From classroom-style seminars to wine hikes on scenic Park City trails, there is something for everyone.

Jennifer Rasmusson’s solo painting exhibition “Coming Together, Falling Apart” will run from September 20 to October 26. “With my first brushstrokes I intended to capture the motion of dance. Choreographed black charcoal lines intertwine with thick paint layered over delicate washes of color. As I painted I discovered that dance is an intricate play of coming together as a group and moving apart as individuals. Both moments hold their own beauty,” Rasmusson says.

KINETIC WIND SCULPTURE BY LYMAN WHITAKER

"When Suzanne and I started to design our bedroom at Lake Gaston, North Carolina, I wanted it to be soft but with colors of the Lake. I was thrilled when I first saw our bedroom. Suzanne took my ideas -guided me with her ideas and the finished bedroom is more than I hoped for!!! Suzanne has helped me with two Deer Valley homes and a condo in Salt Lake City over the years. Each very different in style, from mountain to contemporary and each brilliantly curated”. The design team at Oohs and Aahs are masterful with their attention to detail but listening carefully to my ideas. They are absolutely a delight to be around and work with!!"

DISCOVER WHY PARK CITY IS A DREAMY DESTINATION FOR WEDDINGS AND PROPOSALS

NESTLED IN THE MAJESTY

of towering peaks and whispering pines, Park City is a haven for adventure seekers, festival attendees and romantics alike. Beyond its reputation for world-class outdoor sports and brilliant cultural events, Park City has made a name for itself as a premier destination for weddings and proposals. Thanks to those stunning natural surroundings, a plethora of highend venues, a vibrant culinary scene and activities galore, nearlyweds are saying “I do” to the Park City area.

Dream Destination

Park City offers the perfect mix of luxury, accessibility and mountain allure.

“Couples from around the world are drawn to this region because they want their guests to experience the mountains up close, and Park City always delivers,” says Kate Jones, owner of Kate Elizabeth Events. “Guests can immerse themselves in the beauty of the outdoors, creating unforgettable moments alongside the newlyweds.”

Park City has mountain scenery nearly at every turn, agrees Alexa Kay, proprietor of Alexa Kay Events. “It’s small enough to get around, but there’s also a neverending amount of attractions.”

In only a short drive from Salt Lake City International Airport, you’re suddenly in a whole new world — one that has stellar venues and world-class wedding professionals. That’s one of the reasons why the region’s top planners find their clienteles packed with couples planning destination fetes in Park City.

“The local talent and creatives that service Park City weddings are outstanding,” confirms Melissa Fancy, founder of Melissa Fancy Events. “Guests are enchanted by the natural beauty and the variety of activities at their fingertips. This is the recipe for a dream wedding destination.”

Wedding Weekend Wonder

For a destination wedding, the ceremony and reception are just the beginning; the real fun comes in planning an entire weekend experience. A welcome party at one of the city’s favorite restaurants or bars is a must for kicking off the festivities and acquainting the wedding party and other guests with the local charm. Fancy recommends booking venues on Main Street so friends and family can experience downtown at its most magical hour: sunset. Many couples opt to plan daytime excursions centered around Park City’s glorious landscape. Think guided hikes and mountain biking, gondola rides, fly-fishing, mountaintop yoga, hotair balloon rides and paddleboard excursions on local waterways. In winter, consider options like snowmobiling adventures, snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding and dog sledding.

Bridal parties also can take advantage of the region’s world-class spas like The Spa at Stein Eriksen Lodge, Spa Montage Deer Valley, St. Regis Spa or Align Spa for some pre-wedding pampering. Guests also will welcome the chance to stroll through Olympic Park and idle around Main Street’s shops, restaurants and galleries.

“Park City has so much to offer; we make sure to leave a little downtime for guests to do some local exploring,” emphasizes Fancy.

Perfect Proposals

Nature Lovers – Take a chairlift at Deer Valley Resort or Park City Mountain Resort, go for a scenic drive around Alpine Loop Scenic Byway or Guardsman Pass Scenic Backway, or take a sunset hike and stop to pop the question in a magical spot.

Helicopter for Two – Charter a private helicopter ride and propose mid-flight with stunning aerial views.

Meet on Main – Plan a date to meander along historic Main Street’s charming shops and galleries, propose at sunset and celebrate at one of the area’s best restaurants.

In the Backcountry – Set up a Park City Powder Cat skiing expedition and propose amid the pristine wilderness.

Up in the Air - Take flight in a hot-air balloon and ask the big question as you float over rivers, valleys and peaks.

Local Flavor

The hallmark of a perfectly planned destination wedding is weaving the local culture and custom into your celebration. “Incorporating iconic Park City touches adds an extra layer of charm and authenticity,” says Jones.

For example, reception menus might incorporate local flavors like Utah trout and elk. A cocktail hour can be enhanced by tasting stations serving spirits made by Alpine Distilling and High West Distillery while appetizer platters spotlight Utah honey and local artisanal cheeses by Heber Valley Artisan Cheese and Park City Creamery. Ritual chocolate bars made in Heber can do double duty as place cards thanks to custom labels.

Wedding themes can embrace Western style or draw inspiration from the surroundings. Consider “rustic mountain chic” or “elegant ski chateau” with decor like vintage ski props or fur throws enhancing the ambiance, suggests Jones. In addition, Fancy has commissioned custom artwork of Deer Valley and used it for invitations and decor.

Couples also love to send guests home with favors as mementos of their big day. Jones’ couples have gifted locally crafted pottery and handmade soaps infused with mountain herbs, while one of Kay’s favorite favors is branded cowboy hats.

“Couples have endless opportunities to infuse their wedding celebrations with the unique charm and character of Park City,” says Jones. “It creates unforgettable experiences for themselves and their guests.”

A SOUGHT-AFTER RED LEDGES LOCATION OFFERS YEAR-ROUND ENJOYMENT

With four bedrooms and five bathrooms, this is an ideal place to entertain family and friends. Careful attention to detail, vaulted ceilings and abundant natural light creates an optimal space from which to admire stunning Mount Timpanogos views from the indoor and outdoor living spaces.

This custom home, designed by Kevin Price Designs and built by JD Construction & Development, was deliberately crafted from the start of construction to the finished landscaping. The cedar siding and real stone veneer present a nature-inspired, modern design that is in-sync with the surrounding terrain. Its standing seam and asphalt shingle roof provides protection against the wear and tear of the elements ensuring strength and durability.

WELCOME HOME

The home’s main floor features an open, comfortable floor plan with ample space for welcoming guests. The layout makes the most of the abundant natural light giving the interior a bright, airy perspective.

The kitchen is appointed with stone countertops, Thermador appliances and a large island that accommodates informal dining for five. Built-in cabinetry and a butler’s pantry offer generous storage space to keep kitchen items organized and countertops uncluttered. A door from the kitchen leads to a deluxe covered patio with a large fireplace and built-in barbecue grill.

“No detail was overlooked. Everything is custom including millwork, hand-built cabinetry trim and doors. From flooring to finishes, the home is an utterly bespoke space,” says Jonathan Adams, president of JD Construction & Development.

A wet bar makes entertaining a breeze with a wine fridge, ice maker and stone countertop. A breakfast nook provides seating with built-in storage below and extraordinary mountain views. The dining area’s vaulted ceilings and large windows exude a sense of spaciousness.

The adjacent great room’s floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace lends a touch of drama, while sliding doors give an unimpeded glimpse of the outdoors, and large windows are equipped with automatic shades for privacy.

On the main floor, the primary en suite bedroom includes a gas stone fireplace and large walk-in closet with built-in shelving. The bathroom details include radiant floors, a European glass shower and a separate water closet.

Bob Zierk, founder of Robert Kelly Home, a Park City interior design and furniture studio, assisted the homeowners with adding pieces that would complement the personal items brought from their previous residence. The modern, functional interior design was enhanced with new luxury furniture, art and decor

curated by the studio. “We helped with furniture and accent pieces, particularly for the main-level living spaces, creating a cohesive, polished look the owners favor,” Zierk says.

A cozy, open common area with wood beam trim on the second level provides a place of solitude perfect for savoring a night cap and calling it a day. Three luxurious en suite bedrooms also occupy this floor and feature walk-in closets and beautifully appointed bathrooms with glass showers, high-end fixtures, and both mountain and golf course views. Two of the guest quarters share a terrace. Attention to detail ensures that family members and guests will feel right at home.

OUTDOOR LIVING & SWEET STORAGE

The great outdoors is an integral part of the Red Ledges lifestyle, and the home’s front and back patios are outfitted with high-end accoutrements for grilling, entertaining and savoring the beauty of the surroundings.

A built-in stone kitchen makes outdoor cooking a grill-to-table affair. A stone fireplace keeps family and guests warm and cozy — even in the cooler months. The outdoor living spaces have mountain and golf course views. “The deck is one of my favorite spots at this home,” Adams shares. “It’s crafted with the highest quality materials for durability and beauty.”

Even the heated garage includes custom detailing. There are three parking spaces, and the garage is equipped with epoxy floors, built-in storage, floor drains, a utility sink, and wall storage and organization. Easily used as a workshop all year long, there is plenty of extra space to stow sports equipment.

COMMUNITY MATTERS

Red Ledges is comprised of 2,000 acres and nearly 300 completed homes, with 100 more in process. The community provides easy access to world-class skiing, year-round outdoor adventure and the Salt Lake City International Airport.

In addition to golf, Red Ledges has an equestrian center, fullservice clubhouse, resort-style pool, and tennis and pickleball courts and offers classes, events, excursions and access to two private ski lounges at Deer Valley Resort. Red Ledges is truly a playground for adults and families.

This Red Ledges property is offered for $3,295,000 by listing agent Marny Schlopy with The Schlopy Family | Dawn Mckenna Group with Coldwell Banker Realty in Park City.

GROWING GOLF CULTURE

PARK CITY IS ENTERING THE NEXT STRATOSPHERE OF TIMELESS SPORT

Golf is a sport celebrated for its camaraderie and competition. It is also a game rooted in tradition, both spoken and unspoken. Golf is more than just mastering your swing or conquering a course; it emphasizes the importance of honesty, courtesy, judgment, integrity and respect. These principles not only rule supreme on the green, but they are also the foundation of our mountain town.

Park City has long been known as the skidom of Utah, but times are changing. What many people don’t know is it’s also a golfer’s paradise as home to some of the best courses in the country. The area boasts championship courses designed by renowned golfers and golf course architects like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Mark O’Meara, Pete Dye and Rees Jones. Dave Boyden, a golf course designer with local roots, has helped design dozens of luxury golf courses and developments in the U.S. and Mexico, including The Eagle Course that is opening this summer on his family’s land at the new Wohali development just south of Echo Reservoir near Coalville.

Together, these courses offer unique and challenging golf experiences that are tough to match by other mountain destinations in this country. When the snow begins to melt in the mountains and summer emerges, Park City becomes a hub for golf enthusiasts with a wide range of places to play as well as activities and events for players of all levels. From private and public courses to women’s and men’s leagues and golf camps for kids, there is something for everyone in the area’s dynamic golf community.

There’s no question that part of the attraction is the stunning natural beauty. Golfers can enjoy breathtaking views of the Wasatch Mountains, and the courses are purposefully designed to make the most of natural features, like narrow fairways flanked by pines or tee boxes perched at high elevations.

“Our golf course takes advantage of soft, rolling hills and bent grass fairways with larger-than-life views of Mount Timpanogos and the Jordanelle Reservoir for a unique golf experience,” says Brian Renschler, director of agronomy for Tuhaye at Talisker Club.

Private courses at Park Meadows Country Club, Glenwild Golf Club, Promontory, Tuhaye and Jeremy Ranch Golf & Country Club as well as Red Ledges in Heber and Victory Ranch in Kamas offer exclusive access and social opportunities year-round, not just during golf season. These clubs and developments offer various amenities for members, including access to golf academies, driving ranges, spas, fitness centers, events and family programs.

And with the arrival of the latest installment of new golf courses like the Tiger Woods course at Marcella, players have plenty of options to play like a pro, possibly with a pro. In addition, there are short courses like The Hills at Promontory and The Nest at Wohali (opening in 2026) that offer par-three play that is ideal for families, young and new players, and golfers looking to perfect their short game.

Meanwhile, public courses like the Canyons Golf Course at Park City Mountain Resort, Park City Golf Club and Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway are open to golfers of all levels.

Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Red Ledges

Most offer affordable rates, lessons, leagues and fun seasonal events. A big draw for families is the midweek Kids Swing Free program at Canyons Golf Course. Twilight golf at Park City Golf Club is another popular and inexpensive family-friendly option for golfers to get in a few holes.

“We’ve seen a sharp increase in golf visitors — men, women and kids — here at the Park City course in the last two to three years,” confirms Vaughn Robinson, manager of Park City Golf Club.

Park City’s golf culture encourages participation in a range of local, state and national events like Drive to the Championship golf tournament that supports Park City High School Football and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness tournament that invites women, men and youth to play for a cure. This summer, Park City is one of the stops of the Legends Celebrity Golf Tour, taking place at Canyons Golf Course in July.

The core principles of golf have remained constant, but the culture around the game is evolving in Park City and beyond. These changes are reflected in everything from golf attire to the way technology is integrated into the game, shifting how this centuries-old game is adapting to modern times. As Park City’s golf culture continues to progress, it has become even more clear that the area is no longer just a winter destination but a must-visit destination for golfers around the world.

SIMULATOR GOLF

Turning mountain golf into a year-round sport

The golf season may seem short in the mountains, but golf simulators are gaining popularity and ushering in a new era of golf. Golfing enthusiasts in Park City no longer must wait until summer to hit the fairways and greens. With plenty of indoor golf clubs popping up, it’s easy to enjoy a round or two in a climatecontrolled environment all year long.

“Indoor golf around the world has surpassed outdoor golf, which is incredible to imagine but makes sense. If you think about the large population of people who live in cities around the world, indoor golf is much more convenient,” says Justin Johnson, a PGA professional and owner of IndoorGolfClub. “As for Park City, the demand for simulator golf is crazy. Park City is becoming a summer mecca, and golf is a big part of summers now. The problem is a good outdoor golf season lasts four months, five months if you’re lucky. We’ve seen huge success with IndoorGolfClub.”

• The Basin Recreation Fieldhouse – There is plenty to do at this sports facility, including golf simulator cages available to the public. It’s an excellent option for families or groups looking to enjoy a day of fun.

• IndoorGolfClub – IndoorGolfClub offers lounge-like golf rooms with bays using Trackman simulators. Coaches and lessons as well as memberships are available.

• Park City Golf Simulator – This indoor golf venue provides golfers with convenient 24-hour access, memberships and Trackman simulators for golfers of all levels.

• Topgolf Swing Suites – Located at The St. Regis Deer Valley and WAREHOUSE, a new high-end car storage facility and social club in Park City. Swing Suites feature simulator bays, virtual games and lounge areas.

Additionally, several local golf communities such as Promontory, Glenwild and Wohali offer Trackman simulators as an option for players looking to balance out their winter golf game. Thanks to Trackman’s innovative technology, golfers can now preview and play all 18 holes of the new championship course at Wohali and the new Tiger Woods course at Marcella.

What a great team - they are so knowledgeable and thoughtful. They attended my new construction meeting with me to go over all the options. I’d be so overwhelmed without them! And, they have offered to check up on contractors and sit at my house for repair appointments when I can’t be there - what great service.

ANGLER’S PARADISE

LEGENDARY BLUE RIBBON WATERS, GORGEOUS TROUT AND INSIGHTFUL GUIDES ARE A CASTAWAY’S DREAM BY STEVE PHILLIPS

THOUGH BEST KNOWN FOR WORLD-CLASS SKIING AND SOME OF THE BEST MOUNTAIN BIKING on the planet, the Park City area is also an angler’s paradise. With two Blue Ribbon rivers within minutes of historic Main Street, fly-fishing enthusiasts flock here to lure in bragging-size brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout.

One- to three-hour drives net anglers the opportunity to fish the legendary Strawberry Reservoir, fabled Green River and dozens of other pristine lakes, reservoirs and streams offering quality fishing along the way. Be aware that special regulations apply to most Blue Ribbon waters. For example, anglers may only use flies and lures on sections of the Provo and Weber rivers and the limit is two trout under 15 inches. Though most fly-fishers preach catch-and-release fishing, they are encouraged to harvest a few fish to keep the fisheries healthy.

Utah fishing regulations can be complicated, and anglers should read the current fishing regulations handbook before going afield. The handbooks are available at most sporting goods stores and on the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources website, wildlife.utah.gov

Area residents lucky enough to own homes or property at Victory Ranch near Kamas, approximately 30 minutes from Park City, are entitled to fish a gorgeous private stretch of the upper Provo River flowing through the development. Wolf Creek Ranch, near Victory and also along the upper Provo, offers fly-fishers exclusive access to an on-staff guide, a one-mile section of the river and three ponds stocked with brown, tiger and rainbow trout.

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE

Several fly-fishing shops in the area offer half-day to multiday guided trips to both public and private waters, complete with all the equipment anglers need for an unforgettable experience.

For more than a quarter century, Jans Mountain Outfitters in Park City has offered half- and full-day guided trips on the Provo and Weber rivers, both only minutes from Park City. Jans also books all-day float trips on the Green River among many other choices.

“There’s a lot of heritage here,” says Jay Sykes, a Jans fly-fishing guide. “Some of our guides have worked here for over 20 years. They know these local waters. My personal favorite is the Green River below Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Of all the places I’ve fished in Utah, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, it’s still at the top of my list. It’s amazing out there, especially during the cicada hatch.”

He adds, “More locally, the Uinta Mountains are awesome because you can find some isolated areas up there,” he says.

Fish Heads Fly Shop in nearby Heber specializes in half- and full-day guided trips on the middle fork of the Provo River, a very productive section accessed just three minutes from their shop. Ben Diamond, co-owner and guide, says the middle fork fishes well year-round but his favorite trips are from March through July when dry-fly fishing is at its peak. His go-to fly on the middle fork is the Buffalo Midge.

Diamond is proud of his Fish Heads team. “We’re locally owned and most of us here at the shop grew up in the Heber Valley. And we’re right next to the river,” he says.

Park City Outfitters, Park City Fly Fishing Company, Trout Bum 2 and other fly-fishing shops in the area also offer guided trips. For additional access fees, most local guiding services will take you to private lakes and ponds where monster trout lurk.

A NEW DAWN FOR VENERABLE RIVERS

Since a massive restoration project on the Provo River in the late eighties and early nineties after the construction of Jordanelle Reservoir, this river has regained a reputation for being one of the premiere trout waters in the West. As a tailwater fishery, stream flows and temperatures are ideal for growing hefty brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout.

Similar restoration efforts and water conditions on the Weber River below Rockport Reservoir, less than a 30-minute drive from Park City, earned that river a Blue Ribbon designation as well.

“If the flows are good, the Provo and Weber fish really well year-round,” says Mickey Anderson, co-founder of Fish Tech, an iconic fishing shop in Salt Lake City. Anderson, who has been teaching fly-fishing and fly tying for 45 years, is a celebrity among area fly-fishers. The affable angler freely offers advice gleaned from decades of casting on local waters.

For novice anglers, he says the right equipment is key. “I recommend a 9-foot rod paired with a 5-weight line. You can do anything with that — still water or any of the rivers.” When it comes to choosing the right fly, he emphasizes the basics. “The most important things to consider are size, shape and color, in that order.” Three of his favorite flies are the Prince Nymph, Royal Wulff and Parachute Adams.

For Anderson, fly-fishing is a way of life. “I love every part of fishing: lakes, rivers and especially small streams. You can get stagnant if you just always fish one way. I like to mix it up, do a little bit of everything,” he shares.

LEARN AND SOCIALIZE

Resident anglers who want to learn more about the sport can join High Country Fly Fishers, a conservationoriented Trout Unlimited chapter that meets monthly in Park City. Chapter meetings feature guest speakers on various topics related to fly-fishing and fly tying.

Past president and fly-tying instructor John Schultz has been fly-fishing local waters for more than 50 years. He says it’s the mystique that drew him in. “It’s always fascinating. You could fly-fish every day of your life and there’s still something new to learn.”

Schultz says chapter members are always ready to share their knowledge with anyone who wants to learn.

“We offer a fly-tying class in late winter and a fly-fishing class in early spring every year. We also have a mentor program for people who are just getting started in flyfishing. Volunteer club members take people out and spend a day with them on local waters.”

The organization numbers about 75 members, a third of which are women. Schultz’s wife, Susan, also a chapter member, has been fishing alongside him for 54 years. She says, “There are so many nice people to fish with in the club. That’s half of it, just nice people.”

Imagine your new home on a vast and private 160-acre site in Wolf Creek Ranch, where 13,000 acres with expansive territorial views are shared among only 80 estates. The sheer scale of this epic and unique site must be seen to be comprehended. The spectacular mountain setting offers unparalleled landscapes and privacy –yet it’s just an hour’s drive from the major international airport in Salt Lake City and half an hour away from vibrant Park City.

THE ART HATS of

UTAH’S TATTON BAIRD HATTERS USES TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES OF YESTERYEAR

Prior to the 20th century, hat making was one of the largest industries in the United States. Well-to-do clients would commission custom hat orders to adorn their heads at social events and outings. The latest styles and fashions were proudly displayed by the most fashionable ladies and gents of the day. In the mid 1800s, Americans started heading to the western territories, and the need for a well-made hat became even more of a necessity, but for an entirely different purpose.

Instead of socialites and debutants, hatters began receiving requests from farmers and ranchmen for wide-brimmed, practical hats. In 1865, John B. Stetson designed the Boss of the Plains — or what became known as the cowboy hat — and the style quickly became the favorite headwear for men throughout the West.

Today, the cowboy hat along with the fedora, bucket hat and cloche hat are popular among hat lovers of all ages. Like most clothing items, the quality of a hat varies greatly based on the material used, whether it is mass produced, and the expertise of the hat maker. Hats are found at a variety of retailers and come in all shapes and sizes. However, for those wanting to own a hat of impeccable standard and design, commissioning the talents of an experienced hatter is paramount.

Enter Chandler Scott and Covi King, co-owners of Tatton Baird Hatters in Springville, Utah. Their four-person team handles the entire hat-making process from start to finish. “We do the fittings with our customers, from hat size and shape to color and lifestyle considerations. From there, we are downstairs making the product and completing it to its fruition,” King says.

The hats created at Tatton Baird are made from beaver, rabbit and nutria fur. “The raw materials we use are luxurious and expensive, and we carry forward the tradition of working with these materials to create beautiful, refined products,” she explains. “We make very technical hats here at the shop. Each hat is taken through a 25- to 30-step process going from raw, felted fur to a completed shaped hat.”

A part of what ensures each hat is designed to its exact specifications is securing the correct tools and using established methods. Tatton Baird painstakingly utilizes practices and instruments from the hat-making days of yesteryear.

“Because we have the proper equipment, we are able to make all the subtle nuanced shapes between things like fedoras and telescope crowns or buckaroo styles,” King shares. “We have one of the largest private working collections of block, flanges and historic equipment in the United States. We work on equipment from Utah’s original hat shop from the 1860s. Part of our tool collection dates back to those times, and then is a continued collection of pieces from other hat shops around the country.”

The first hat shop in Utah was owned by John Charles Tatton, who immigrated from England to Illinois in 1849 and became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When the Latter-day Saints were instructed to move west, Brigham Young helped finance Tatton’s shop.

Tatton Baird Hatters is headquartered in a location that has a wonderful story all its own. The historic building at 52 W. 200 S. St. in Springville, Utah, was built in 1891 and has been completely restored to its original glory. Walking into the shop is truly like stepping back in time with the original wood floors, beautiful ceilings and a magnificent stained-glass panel from a Latter-day Saints chapel.

The building is so welcoming that locals and regulars will just stop by to hold court. “People come and just hang out. Everyone talks and exchanges stories. We then have the unique opportunity to educate people about a historic craft,” she says.

When you listen to King discuss the local community and her love for hat making, it is easy to understand what has made their shop successful. The name Tatton Baird Hatters has become well-known around the region. In fact, the company’s unparalleled reputation has drawn the business of numerous celebrities including Robert Duvall, Mark Harmon and Linda Evangelista.

Even more rewarding for King are the hats that have been personally created for customers who have a difficult time locating a size and shape that works well. She says, “We have helped people who can’t find a hat that will fit their head. There is a powerful satisfaction in creating something with your hands that helps make someone’s life a little better and is really appreciated.”

The team at Tatton Baird Hatters works to ensure each of their customers receive exactly what they want. Whether it is someone looking for a brand-new fashion to wear on a special occasion or a repeat client hoping to get a gentle rebuild for a beloved hat, Scott and King understand that hats are an expression of one’s personal fashion and lifestyle. Hats can be ornate, arresting and utilitarian. They can provide a statement about one’s personality, mood and experiences. King emphasizes, “Hats are a piece of art you live your life in.”

A FLORIDA FAMILY TRADES THE

BUSY

A1A HIGHWAY FOR ALFALFA FIELDS NEAR PARK CITY

Among renowned mountain biking trails and beautiful open space lies a 12.38-acre ranchette that is a blissful sanctuary for the Higbie family. Seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of south Florida, the family sought solace in Park City’s dry climate and quiet streets.

Having discovered this haven during a ski trip, the Higbies knew it would be their go-to winter locale, but it soon evolved into a year-round paradise. “As the locals say, we come for the winter and stay for the summer,” chuckles homeowner Valerie Higbie.

When spring arrives, the fields surrounding the main home sprout into a vibrant green alfalfa, much to the delight of their four horses. “Florida summers are so humid; we much prefer bringing our family and the horses to Utah. It gives the horses the opportunity to dry out their hooves and get away from the mosquitos,” Higbie notes.

Plus, in the secure confines of the Silver Creek neighborhood, horses, kids and guests can roam freely. Upon walking into the main home, visitors are greeted by a grand entryway leading to a formal dining area, subtly delineated by a step-down. Without closing out the dining room, this slight level change maintains an open floor plan. “It’s a clever separation that frames out the area,” explains Higbie.

Onie Bolduc, associate broker with Summit Sotheby’s International Realty in Park City, adds, “The kitchen, though adjacent to the dining area, feels like a separate space, allowing the dining room to shine.”

Turning left off the entryway, guests find themselves in the living room that serves as the heart of the home and is where lofty wood beams draw the eye upward toward an expansive collection of windows. There also is a large window with doors that open toward the mountains and Olympic Park, making the inside feel like the serene outdoors.

Whether gathered around the fireplace or conversing in one of the many seating areas along the kitchen, nearly every vantage point offers a panorama of the Wasatch Mountains. In winter, the scene is enhanced by views of ski runs at Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain Resort. A covered porte-cochere off the

kitchen provides an outdoor sitting and grilling space that serves as “a fantastic family gathering area with garden and mountain views,” Higbie says.

Predominantly situated on one level, the home’s layout facilitates effortless movement, including access to several outdoor patios overlooking the pastures and mountains. The primary bedroom boasts an array of windows and a private outdoor living space, while its ensuite bathroom exudes spa-like opulence with a freestanding tub and a spacious walk-in closet. Keeping outdoor connections a top priority, an additional main-level guest bedroom enjoys walk-out access.

Upstairs, a cozy living area, office and home movie theatre provide additional space for relaxation and entertainment. Two additional bedrooms round out the second floor, perfect for hosting large gatherings during the holidays. “It’s one of those spaces that makes you feel like you’re not on top of each other while still being in close proximity,” Higbie says. Situated a mere 30-minute drive from Salt Lake City International Airport, the property offers convenient access for out-of-town friends and family.

The home showcases a blend of Western charm and modern amenities, evident in its unique windows and multi-pitch ceilings. Being able to take advantage of the natural light without overwhelming the home with heat is key during the warm summer months. “My favorite window in the whole house is the oblong skylight from the hallway to the office. It brings in a soft, natural light while still keeping the house cool,” shares Higbie.

Despite its secluded ambiance, Main Street and two major ski resorts, Deer Valley and Park City, are just a 20-minute drive away. “Returning home to the chirping of birds after a day in downtown Park City is truly a delight,” notes Higbie.

Surprisingly, the property is not governed by a homeowner’s association, offering a rare sense of autonomy while still being within reach of urban amenities. Adjacent to the residence lies a network of singletrack horse and bike trails catering to outdoor enthusiasts of all levels. In 2012, Park City earned the International Mountain Bicycling Association’s

top Gold-Level recognition, not only for its world-renowned network of trails but for its accessibility.

To the north is a gateway to the iconic 16-mile Flying Dog Loop. “It’s by far my favorite trail in town,” says Bolduc, who’s been living and riding bikes in Park City for nearly a decade.

Down the driveway and to the west are a collection of bridle paths that meander over creeks and bridges with direct links to the mountains. It’s an ideal setup as adjacent to the Higbie’s main home stands a six-stall barn crowned with living quarters featuring a full kitchen, two bedrooms and one bathroom—a haven for guests, particularly those with young children who need a quiet space while attending lively family get-togethers. Below, amenities such as a tack room and wash rack cater to the equestrian lifestyle.

“The property is uniquely situated on the valley floor, so it’s the perfect environment for horseback riding,” says Bolduc, noting it was a major sell for the family.

Off the fully operational barn sits both indoor and outdoor horse-riding arenas. “My husband and daughter both ride horses, one Western and one English,” explains Higbie.

To curate the space for both disciplines, the Higbies reconstructed the footing of the outdoor arena with the help of professional builders from Premiere Equestrian. English riders opt to use subtle shifts in their weight and legs to lead the horse, while Western riders use direct rein cues. Typically, the English discipline involves jumping over larger obstacles, so a soft yet sturdy landing is imperative, and Western disciplines lean more

into barrel racing, roping and rodeo-style competitions, which don’t call for a more padded landing.

Rustic wood paneling lines the walls of the arena’s viewing area, which is fitted with a wood-burning fireplace. “The arena is heated, so the fireplace is really just for ambiance,” Higbie notes. An outdoor porch with two rocking chairs grants an additional angle for spectators.

Ensuring practicality for their lifestyle, the Higbies prioritized a spacious driveway capable of accommodating large horse trailers — a necessity for their frequent journeys from Florida. A covered four-car garage provides easy storage for cars, trucks and a tractor.

Water rights, crucial for maintaining the vast alfalfa fields and outdoor arenas, are owned by the Higbies, alleviating concerns amidst Utah’s arid climate. Being able to irrigate by way of the land’s natural resources is pivotal for a property of this nature. “You really can’t function here without water rights,” Bolduc emphasizes.

While the interiors are a marvel, the best part of the ranchette is its stunning outdoor spaces and unbeatable mountain views. “I always love watching the horses gallop across the pasture each morning after we turn them out,” says Higbie. Framed by the majestic Wasatch Mountains, the family and their beloved animals find solace in Silver Creek.

As the Higbie family embarks on a new adventure, this one-ofa-kind property awaits its next chapter and is listed with Summit Sotheby’s International Realty.

CHEFS AND DISTILLERS TO SHOWCASE PARK CITY AT JAMES BEARD FOUNDATION’S NEW PLATFORM BY MEGAN RULE

OOne of the most exciting achievements for chefs and restaurant owners is cooking for or being lauded by the James Beard Foundation, one of the premiere organizations recognizing talent and achievement in the culinary arts. On Sept. 25-29, Park City Area Restaurant Association (PCARA) is hosting culinary experiences at the foundation’s newest endeavor, Platform at Market 57 food hall in New York City.

PCARA used a competitive application process to select five restaurants and two distilleries that will highlight the essence of Park City at the stateof-the-art show kitchen and educational space. Each chef will be preparing different meals at different times of the day throughout the weekend.

“We are incredibly thrilled at the opportunity to bring Park City’s exceptional culinary talents to Platform by the James Beard Foundation this September,” says Ginger Wicks, executive director PCARA. “While the five-day event will kick off with a collaborative reception with all the chefs, each will also host an individual event.”

CLEMENT GELAS

Courcheval Bistro

Clement Gelas, executive chef of Courcheval Bistro and senior director of club operations for Talisker, is attending the James Beard Foundation Platform event alongside head chef Maria Mantilla.

“I’m excited Chef Maria is coming with us,” says Gelas. “She’s a key part of the team. Together, we’ll make a big impact on the event, which will hopefully lead to more recognition. I’d love to get the word out to the Park City and Salt Lake City communities.”

The lunch menu they are preparing will have a few differences from their typical seasonal offerings but will be in line with Courcheval’s alpine bistro with a touch of French flavors. Gelas says they’re planning smoked fish rillette, a light salad, a hot dish and a small appetizer to kick things off.

As a French native, it’s second nature for Gelas to infuse both the culinary influences of his homeland and the alpine flair of Park City. “We have an amazing team that can’t wait to represent Park City in the big city,” he emphasizes.

MICHAEL SHOWERS

High West Distillery

Like Gelas, Executive Chef Michael Showers has been to the James Beard House twice before to show off High West Distillery, but this trip will be his first to Platform. High West has a tasting room and restaurant, The Refectory, at its Wanship location as well as High West Saloon and Nelson Cottage in Park City.

“I’m stoked,” Showers says. “I’m excited to collectively go out as part of a broader Park City representation. I don’t have a lot of nerves now, but who knows how that will change as we get closer.”

Showers has been at High West for a few years now and combines his love of traditional barbecue with classic whiskey flavors to craft menus, which can be described as quintessential western American.

High West will focus on projecting Park City’s mountain aesthetic. The alpine cuisine found on their menu during an après ski hangout is similar to what they will be offering. With food ranging from small bites to smoky flavors of meat, they will transform Platform into an après lounge.

“You know that feeling when you’re out enjoying a good après session and the vibes are high?” Showers inquires. “That’s the feeling we’re going to try and recreate. We have a great brand team that will lean into this with our menu. I’m excited to bring Park City to Manhattan.”

RYAN WILLIAMS AND SETH ADAMS

Riverhorse on Main

Riverhorse on Main in Park City is known for its high-end dining, exquisite atmosphere and eclectic American cuisine that leans into local and seasonal flavors. Chef de Cuisine Ryan Williams is looking forward to bringing a taste of this Park City gem to Platform.

“There’s no reason to be nervous,” Williams says. “Seth Adams, the executive chef and owner, and I have been working together for almost 12 years. Between the two of us, we have over 45 years of experience in restaurants ranging from fast casual to large hotels and fine dining.”

Riverhorse will be preparing an appetizer on opening night and a multicourse dinner the following evening,

focusing on new dishes from their menu. Williams and Adams plan to use a mix of Utah and local New York ingredients to create a best of both worlds scenario.

The duo has cooked at the James Beard House, and Riverhorse has hosted several celebrity chefs. “We are honored to be a part of the selected restaurants,” Williams says. “We’re also excited to bring out a secret weapon for everyone’s favorite course, dessert, so keep an eye out for that.”

ZANE HOLMQUIST

The Stein Collection

Zane Holmquist, executive chef and director of food and beverage at The Stein Collection, has cooked at the James Beard House four times for various cooking expos.

“I’m very excited about the event,” Holmquist says. “Some of the most talented chefs in Park City will get to show off what we do here to the New York City market and media. It will be fantastic recognition for everyone in our town.”

Dishes on Stein’s brunch menu will be served, along with some unique items for the Platform event. Quintessential Scandinavian flavors will be carried through foods, along with some Latin flavors that come from South American team members. Food vendors representing Utah heritage also are contributing to the menu.

Holmquist spent years traveling and cooking across the country and overseas, which led to the many flavors featured in his cooking. Quality ingredients combined with worldly flavors are his hallmark.

“This opportunity puts a nice light on Park City and how amazing our cuisine is here,” he says. “For Stein, brunch is such a big feature of what we do here. It’s a key meal to showcase because it isn’t common, so a lot of fun things will come out of it.”

MATTHEW HARRIS

tupelo Park City

Owner and head chef Matthew Harris also is no stranger to the James Beard House. He makes his way back to New York City a few times a year to visit friends and indulge in and learn from the culinary experiences there. After starting his career training with JeanGeorges Vongerichten’s New York restaurants and opening one in Atlanta, Harris was invited to bring his talents to the mountains.

“I’m super excited to go,” Harris says. “It’s exciting to be there and be cooking for everyone in attendance; even just being included in the event is an honor.”

Harris says he plans to showcase menu items that utilize foods from Utah and what chefs can do with this abundance. For example, he expects to make honey butter, elk Bolognese and hot honey parmesan part of his plans for Platform.

In addition, the dinner tupelo prepares for Saturday night will be paired with drink options from Alpine Distilling and High West Distillery. Harris also hopes to weave the spirits from these distilleries into the food portion of tupelo’s menu and to showcase hors d’oeuvres that pair well with the beverages.

SPOTLIGHT ON SPIRITS

While many people think about pairing wine with meals, why not cocktails? Especially when Park City is home to two well-known distilleries: Alpine Distilling and High West Distillery.

Alpine Distilling’s Elevated Gin is some of the most decorated gin in the U.S., notes owner and botanical distiller Sara Sergent, who is excited to represent Park City’s culinary and craft scene.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with all the chefs on different craft cocktails showcasing our gin, liquors and whiskeys,” she says. “We’re planning a different cocktail with each chef.”

In addition to making spirits, Alpine Distilling operates Alpine Distilling Social Aid & Pleasure Club on Park City’s Main Street.

“It’s always great to go to New York and preach the whiskey gospel,” adds Holly Booth, beverage manager for High West Distillery. “This event is a great way to experience High West in a slightly different setting. The New York City pop-up is a fun shift of mindsets, like an après vacation in the city.” Booth says their menu will be like what you’d find in Park City, such as hot toddies, cider drinks and cocktails that are simple, straightforward and highlight the flavors of High West’s whiskey. They also are considering a whiskey pairing as part of dessert cocktails and the welcome event.

MEET THE DISTILLER

ALPINE DISTILLING’S SARA SERGENT IS THE MOST DECORATED U.S. BOTANICAL DISTILLER BY JENNY WILLDEN

Did you know some of the world’s best gin is made right here in Park City? That’s right, Alpine Distilling has risen to fame fast for its craft-distilled spirits, with its Alpine Elevated Gin leading the charge. And its elevated flavor and distillation is the creation of one woman: Sara Sergent.

After earning a diploma in gin in Scotland, Sara joined her husband, Rob, who founded Alpine Distilling in 2016. Only a few short years later, she’s become a highly recognized distiller in the U.S. and abroad.

The company’s first spirit, Preserve Liqueur, was awarded platinum at the international SIP Awards during its first year in production, and the accolades have piled up in the years since. Sergent’s botanicals are sourced from around the world and distilled into an award-winning gin through a proprietary vapor extraction method that’s earned the product multiple honors such as Gin of the Year in London, 4X Best Craft Gin by USA Today, and the highest ranked U.S. gin at the World Spirits Competition.

Sergent was inducted into London’s prestigious Gin Guild in May for her accomplishments in gin distillation, an honor bestowed to very few distillers. The guild operates to protect, promote and invigorate the distillation of quality “London” gin in the United Kingdom and worldwide.

A selection of Sergent’s gins are featured in the exclusive Gin Archive, a collection of over 5,000 gins from more than 60 countries held at a secret location. Through a private invite, Sara and Rob visited the Gin Archive on their recent trip to England

In addition to crafting award-winning gin for public consumption, Sergent also shares her botanical expertise with others through Alpine Distilling’s Gin Experience, where guests distill their own custom varietal. Through this five-hour

experience, which Sergent calls “adult arts and crafts,” she’s made over 2,400 unique gins—more than any other distiller in history.

Sergent also creates custom spirits for The St. Regis Deer Valley, Stein Eriksen Lodge Deer Valley, The Lodge at Blue Sky, Capital One and The International Club for Rolls-Royce & Bentley Enthusiasts. Her passion for the spirit comes from family. “My grandma enjoyed gin — she sipped gin with her priest on Thursdays,” shares Sergent. “Gin is great as it makes you feel good, and the art of distillation goes back to biblical times.”

What makes Alpine Distilling’s gin so special? “We pull botanicals from around the world. Our custom-built vapor extraction allows for a proprietary balance of pressure and speed to pull chosen elements to produce a complex yet light, beautifully balanced gin,” she explains.

Rob is an accomplished distiller too and has earned the coveted Kentucky Colonel title from the Kentucky governor for his work in bourbon whiskey distillation and his accolades. Alpine Distilling currently produces five varieties of whiskey.

Spirits aficionados can taste and purchase Alpine Distilling products at liquor stores in Utah and nationally, as well as the company’s two Park City locations: the production facility and retail space at 7132 Silver Creek Road and the Park City Social Aid & Pleasure Club at 364 Main St.

Sergent describes the club as the extension of Alpine Distilling’s living room and a community gathering space. “We’ve had everything here from weddings, celebrations of life and marriage proposals to belly dancing, painting, yoga and an unveiling event for our new gin chocolate bar with Ritual Chocolate.” She adds, “We do a lot of fun things, and it’s a great place for locals.” alpinedistilling.com

SEE, SWIRL, SMELL, SIP, SAVOR AND EVEN STORE WINE IN UTAH
BY MEGAN RULE
Bold & Delaney Winery

Utah isn’t typically thought of as a state to encounter fine wines, let alone go on a wine tour. However, the dry climate and latitude of southern towns make for a great environment for local grapes while the urban vibe around Park City and Salt Lake City allow for unparalleled tasting opportunities.

We’ve assembled unique options for people who have a passion for wine or want to find out more. Fill a trail pass on the Utah Wine Trail, book private tastings with sommeliers at Old Town Cellars, try out a new enterprise that offers wine storage, and take classes and history tours through Fox School of Wine. Also don’t forget to check out the Park City Wine Festival in October that is covered in our Luxe List article on page 92.

UTAH WINE TRAIL

Take a trip to southern Utah and embark on a wine journey like no other. With six wineries on the Utah Wine Trail, and a sixth coming soon, the experience offers a deep dive into all things Utah wine. If the state was cut into fourths, the tour is contained in the bottom left fourth and currently includes Bold & Delaney Winery in Dammeron Valley, Chanela Vineyards in St. George, I/G Winery in Cedar City, Water Canyon Winery in Hildale and Zion Vineyards in Leeds.

“We encourage spreading your tour out over a weekend,” suggests Doug McCombs, manager of the wine trail. “There’s no order to go in, and no time limit. You could technically do it all in a day, but it would be a long one and you’d definitely need a driver.”

Visitors can pick any winery as a starting point and should ask for a trail pass. Once the tasting is complete, your card will be stamped and you can go on your way to the next location. The last place that stamps your pass will give you a gift — currently custom wine glasses, but that is subject to change — as a thank you for visiting.

All wineries offer red and white variations. Some allow you to pick your tastings, while others have a set menu. And each winery has a different cost for the tasting.

“It’s so low-key, and I think what’s unique is everyone will pour you what you would like to taste and then sit down and chat with you,” McCombs says. “You’ll sit with the owner or winemaker. It’s so much more intimate than a larger winery. It’s a down-home experience because you’re enjoying your glass with the people who have their hands on the grapes.”

The trail is open year-round, but some winery visits are by appointment only.

OLD TOWN CELLARS

The quintessential Main Street location, Old Town Cellars, brings wine tasting and local grapes to visitors and residents alike. After a water main break last spring that shut down the physical location, Old Town Cellars leaned on their Utah Liquor Store sales to stay afloat while renovations happened. Now that the doors are open again, the tasting room is better than ever.

“We’re still recovering from our city pipe break last April, so we used this time to strategize special events for the upcoming season,” says Stephen MacKay, founder and owner of Old Town Cellars. “We’re working on more live music, stand-up comedy and partnerships.”

The winery blends and creates its own wines from various grape suppliers along the West Coast and serves them alongside an eclectic list of other wines selected by Old Town Cellars’ sommeliers, local brews and top-shelf spirits. The tasting room is in a 19th century silver mining vault that provides a vintage après-ski vibe.

“When visiting, I’d recommend doing a private tasting with myself or another sommelier between 11 a.m. and noon, before we open to the public each day,” MacKay suggests. “We curate it to the guest and make it really fun — it’s inviting with a touch of concierge. We have the most unique bar on Main Street, so we definitely put lots of focus on the wines we produce, but we certainly have other offerings to please the crowd.”

MOUNTAIN WINE STORAGE

If you have too much wine on your hands after a wine tour in Utah or beyond, fear not as Mountain Wine Storage offers a solution that can’t be found anywhere else in the Wasatch. “I moved here from California and needed a program for storing my wine,” says Bill DeLeon, managing partner. “I wanted to ship wine once I moved, but that wasn’t feasible. After finding no storage options, I knew I couldn’t be the only person who had this need. I looked into the legalities because I needed more than a basement for storing my collection.”

The Heber City facility is a spacious 9,000 square feet with both the temperature and humidity carefully controlled. With security cameras, a backup generator and individual wine closets that hold only 12 cases or are as large as a walk-in closet, there’s something for nearly all wine enthusiasts. Options are also available for month-to-month rentals.

“We take wine very seriously,” DeLeon says. “It’s a passion for me and my partners, which was our motivation to start this, in addition to a business opportunity and something we needed. I like to know that I’m solving a problem for not just myself but others in the community.”

FOX SCHOOL OF WINE

After sampling, buying and storing wine, take some time to dive in and learn more about its origins and tasting notes in an informative and lighthearted atmosphere.

“Our overarching umbrella of deliverables is first fun, then tasting and finally learning,” says Kirsten Fox, executive sommelier of Fox School of Wine. “If we aren’t having fun, we won’t even move on to the next thing. It’s all about being able to recall a wine through a fun experience, rather than just reading notes.”

Wine professors teach classes on a multitude of wines made throughout the world. Each professor brings their own background and interesting pieces of data that come from relationships they’ve made through their studies. There are Friday evening Recess on Main classes from 6:30 – 7:45 p.m. held at Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City, and groups can reserve private historical Mines & Wines tours in Park City and Saints & Sinners tours in Salt Lake City. Private classes and tastings also are available.

“These aren’t any old normal wine educators,” Fox emphasizes. “We have vineyard owners and educators that have amazing experiences with food and beverage. We have a woman who pairs wines with different summits in Utah, and another who is one of 443 certified wine educators in the world.”
