Heber Valley is the ideal destination for crosscountry enthusiasts. Whether you’re searching for an intense cardio workout or just want some time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life— these trails offer something for everyone.

Soldier Hollow

As one of the venues for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, the 25 kilometers of trails, located just outside of Park City, offer world-class biathlon and cross-country skiing trails. In addition, there are several winter programs to participate in if you want to make it a full day of adventure.

Wasatch Mountain State Park

Located adjacent to Soldier Hollow, the Wasatch Mountain State Park offers over 11 kilometers of groomed Nordic track with diagonal stride and skating lanes. Ski along both flat and hilly terrain while you enjoy views of the mountains and meadows.

Beaver Creek Trail

Ideal for beginners and families. This breathtaking 8.5 kilometers groomed trail follows the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway. Enjoy gliding through aspen groves, mountain forests and picturesque meadows.

Homestead Cross-Country Ski Center

Located in Midway, you’ll find 11 kilometers of groomed trails to enjoy rolling hills and nature. Equipment rental and lessons are available. When you are done, take a dip to warm up in the 96-degree Homestead Crater.

Sundance Nordic Center

Located between Heber and Provo you’ll find 15 kilometers of wide groomed trails that are ideal for both classic crosscountry skiing, and skate-skiing. Go at your own pace and enjoy the winter scenes.

Beyond resort slopes are the fringe sports that most winter enthusiasts won’t experience or even try in their lifetimes. Here are three extreme, adrenaline pumping sports you may want to leave to the experts.

Cat Skiing

Cat skiing offers backcountry access to skiers without needing expensive touring gear or a helicopter. The snowcat is an enclosed, fully tracked vehicle made for traversing snow. Access to backcountry glory provides the opportunity to ski or ride pristine powder. Only advanced to expert skiers are recommended to partake in cat skiing. “We quantify that as being able to ski ungroomed terrain at a black diamond pitch at resorts out West,” explained Bekah Stevens, operations manager for Park City Powder Cats. With chutes and slopes running from 600 to 2,000 vertical feet, these runs of fresh powder are unlike anything you’ve skied in a resort.

Backcountry Snowmobiling

The backcountry calls many to its open fields of powder, including those enjoying it on snowmobiles. Adam Pulley, owner of Uinta Recreation, says there are two types of snowmobiling— the follow-the-leader type on groomed trails and the backcountry riding through deep powder excursions. “We do a real backcountry tour, which caters to people who have previous experience and want to get off- trail,” explained Pulley. With great risk comes the great reward of experiencing nature untouched and in its most raw form. Advanced and expert backcountry snowmobilers will know how to deal with common problems, like tipping the machine, engine flooding, overheating and getting stuck.

Danger to the snowmobilers themselves includes hitting trees or rocks, getting pinned by the 500-pound machine, and, of course, avalanches. Riders in the backcountry should never go alone and make sure they have the proper safety and survival tools like radio, shovel, extra gloves and outerwear, food and airbag pack.

There may not be a more Western sport than skijoring— think cowboys and cowgirls on skis and horses. A skilled horseback rider pulls an experienced skier with a rope attached to the horse’s saddle through a racecourse. The skijoring season mainly runs from January to March. In skijoring, the rider on horseback steers the horse while the skier holds onto a 30-foot rope attached to the saddle. It’s sort of like water skiing, just replace the boat with a horse and the water with snow. There are many variations of the sport but the timed Western version includes riding off jumps, going through gates and grabbing rings at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. The dangers for this sport are unlike sports in the backcountry where snowpack and avalanches are your biggest worries; for skijoring, it’s speed and control. Highspeed wipeouts, collisions, and falls on concrete-like packed snow are the biggest dangers to racers. But heck, since when do cowboys and cowgirls shy away from tough situations?

Heber Valley is chock full of creative, talented, and experienced people who, luckily for us, turned their passions into businesses. Here’s a compilation of some of the tried-and-true hometown entrepreneurs, ranging from your neighborhood butcher to pharmacist. 41

Butcher Shop

Heber Valley Meat is one of the only butcher shops practicing whole carcass processing, allowing for custom cuts of meat. “We wanted to bring high quality, local, and fresh meats to the Heber Valley as well as offer a convenient option for local farmers and ranchers to get their animals processed,” said Owner Jessie Morris. Heber Valley Meat sources ingredients locally, including for their house-made bratwurst and sausages. They also offer custom mobile processing for local ranchers and wild game processing from deer to elk to moose.

Neighborhood Pharmacy

Ryan Swensen has been a pharmacist for over 20 years in pretty much every position, employed by both chains and family-owned pharmacies. He worked at Ridley’s in Midway until it closed, leading him to open Midway Family Pharmacy. “Loving Midway as much as I do, I thought, ‘I’m going to open my own pharmacy here.’ My history has given me all the skills to do that.”

With a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, he provides next-level care. Midway Family Pharmacy prides itself on knowing its customers, many of which followed Swensen from Ridley’s. The pharmacy also supplies over-the-counter medicines, cold and flu care, immunizations and local goods. Swenson proudly proclaims, “Having a pharmacy that knows what you’re taking, knows about all the nuances of your health and your healthcare is hard to get. Are you tired of being a number? You can come here. We’re making pharmacy personal again.”

Winter is warmly welcomed in Heber Valley and in such an picturesque setting, creative residents decorate their yards, decks and windows with captivating, colorful displays. And that doesn’t just mean holiday décor. Make your outdoor space a wonderland all season long. 59

The first order of business is to invest in a sturdy snowblower or hire a service to keep your sidewalks, porches and decks clear of snow. Alternatively, consider covering outdoor entertainment areas with artificial turf or outdoor area rugs. Doing so makes clearing snow easier. Front porches and windows are ideal for creative winter decor. Traditional evergreen wreaths adorning front doors, coupled with winter-themed welcome mats or handpainted welcome signs are endearing and inviting.
