HEBER VALLEY ACTIVITIES By Meredith Kluever Aside from amazing eateries and mountain views, Heber and Midway host a plethora of memorable activities for families, friends and couples from local longstanding treasures to adrenaline-filled adventuring. Here are some local and visitor favorites that offer seasonal and year-round events: TIMPANOGOS VALLEY THEATER The mission of the Timpanogos Valley Theater is to bring families together with thoughtfully timed plays that all ages can enjoy and youth programming for the rising stars. The theater runs on volunteer participation and produces three to four plays per year. This winter, be sure to catch its 60-minute adaptation of It’s A Wonderful Life as a 1940s radio show. 14

MIDWAY ICE CASTLES Midway Ice Castles has been attracting visitors from around the state and country for years. The frozen attraction is built each winter by professional ice artists with thousands upon thousands of icicles. Experience all this winter wonderland has to offer, with the LED-lit sculptures, ice slides, mazes and tunnels. HOLIDAY LANES Holiday Lanes is a Heber staple and has been in business since 1962. MIDWAY ICE RINK Set amongst the pine trees lies the outdoor Midway Ice Rink that originated in 2000. It started as a fun idea and developed into the city’s seasonal essential that is spearheaded each year by volunteers. The rink even uses four refrigeration units donated from the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. “We had such a wonderful time opening weekend 2019! Traditionally used to haul sheep up and down the Provo Canyon, it now operates as a passenger train. The 16 miles of track between the valley and Vivian Park in Provo Canyon offer access to some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. When you enter The Lakehouse at Deer Creek you will immediately be struck by the jaw-dropping view of the lake. With floor-to-ceiling windows and a large open dining area, the water seems to surround you in all directions. With its large open dining area, the restaurant’s atmosphere is warm and relaxed. The customer service is at a 5-Star Level but without the white-cloth pretention. According to General Manager JD McLelland, this is all part of The Lakeside’s vision. 94

Not surprisingly however, the cuisine is the main part of the restaurant’s mission—to create a menu that weaves Utah’s expansive heritage with locally sourced and home-made dishes. Head Chef Tamara Stanger is a Utah native and loves everything about the state’s rich history: from the indigenous culture, to the mountain men and trappers, to the Mormon pioneers. Each item on the menu is lovingly created and prepared. From foraging local herbs and ingredients, to partnering with local farmers, you can taste the commitment and effort that goes into each meal. As McLelland explains, “We want our patrons to experience the difference between value verses price.” Many items are already becoming local favorites, such as warm apple butter cornbread, lamb taquitos, rabbit lasagna and bison Salisbury steak. They also feature a kids menu that includes chicken bites and a 4 cheese quesadilla. You can also select from a wine, beer and cocktail menu, personally created to complement the menu’s flavors. The Lakehouse at Deer Creek is open all year long for dinner and for weekend brunch during the spring and fall. You can make reservations and check out the full menu online.
