I like my coffee early when I have homework to finish and finals to study for. I like coffee bitter and sweet, frothed and stirred, a lot and a little. Sometimes—all the time—I like my coffee. I like it in a coffee shop, in a dorm room, on a side street, in a Starbucks. Coffee and I have a good thing going. It’s a reliable friend, consistent and caring. I used to prefer You; in a booth or at a table, delicious and nice, warm and comfortable, with coffee to the side of your sweeter disposition. Now, I am the bitter one. Slowly cooling, fresh and steaming before You, as we small talk about the weather or our jobs. I’m avoiding the first sip. Revenge is best served cold; my coffee is best served hot and without You.
