213th Commencement

letter from the President On behalf of the Mount St. Mary’s University Board of Trustees, faculty, administration and staff, I am pleased to congratulate you and your family on your graduation.

Your time as students has ended, and your lifelong membership in the university’s National Alumni Association has begun. You join a truly distinguished network of more than 18,000 alumni – across the country and around the world – who are making significant contributions locally, nationally and globally.

You have earned our congratulations and our good wishes.

In your final three semesters, you showed incredible resilience as you transitioned to remote education and hybrid learning in the midst of a global pandemic.

The lessons you take away from this experience can serve you well for a lifetime. Have confidence in your skills and what you have learned at the Mount. With optimism, vision and pride, you will create a meaningful, fulfilling future – and, I have no doubt, a better world.

In the years ahead, I look forward to seeing how each of you puts your Mount education to work. I hope you will reflect on your caring faculty and classmates – they stretched your imagination and spirit. Finally, keep in touch with each other and your professors. Commencement Addresses

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS Jovita Quesada Carranza Jovita Carranza served as the 26th Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). As a member of President Trump’s Cabinet, she advocated on behalf of the 30 million small businesses in America. In her role as Administrator, she lead a team of professionals dedicated to ensuring entrepreneurs located across America have the support and resources they need to start, grow and expand their small businesses, and recover in the event of a declared disaster.

Prior to leading the SBA, Administrator Carranza served as Treasurer of the United States at the U.S. Department of the Treasury under President Donald J. Trump. In her role as a principal advisor to Secretary Mnuchin, Carranza focused on increasing participation in our vibrant economy by fostering financial capability and sustainability.

Administrator Carranza is a Chicago native. She previously served as the Deputy Administrator for the SBA under former President George W. Bush, where she received a bipartisan, unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Before her first SBA appointment, Carranza had a distinguished 30-year career at United Parcel Service (UPS), where she was the highest-ranking Latina in the history of the company. She started as a part-time, night-shift box handler and worked her way up to President of Latin America and Caribbean operations.

Administrator Carranza earned her Master of Business Administration from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and received executive, governance, management, and financial training at the INSEAD Business School in Paris, France; Michigan State University; and the University of Chicago.

• Richard P. Miller, C’74 Richard P. Miller, C’74, is retired president and CEO of Virtua, South Jersey’s largest health care provider, and a member of Mount St. Mary’s University’s Board of Trustees. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Southern Illinois University.

Virtua offers a full continuum of primary, preventative, wellness, acute and long-term care. Miller led the company in innovative directions by creating a values-based culture defined by the “Star Initiative,” adopting Six Sigma, a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for improving patient outcomes. Under his leadership the health care system has been transformed from a group of community-based hospitals into a technologically advanced set of regional medical centers.

Miller serves on the operating committee of the board of Select Greater Philadelphia and the board of the University of the Sciences of Philadelphia. He has also been chairman of the board of trustees of the New Jersey Hospital Association, served on the Governor’s Committee on Benchmarking for Quality and Efficiency, and on the New Jersey Health Care Access Study Commission.

He served on boards for the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes of Southern New Jersey, and is a past chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey Board.

His many accolades and awards include Human Resources CEO of the Year by the HR Department of the Year TO BE REVIEWED Awards; the CEO IT Achievement Award from Modern Healthcare magazine; Healthcare CEO of the Year by AND/OR UPDATED the Philadelphia Business Journal; and the New Jersey Business Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award from Donna & Dr. New Jersey Junior Achievement. Miller was by awarded Mount St.Trainor Mary’s University’s highest honor, a Doctorate in Humane Letters, honoris causa, in 2017.

Gracelyn A. McDermott, C’93 Gracelyn A. McDermott, C’93, chair of the Mount St. Mary’s University Board of Trustees, is vice president for sales, marketing and business development at Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States. Her overall professional career includes sales, operations and information technology leadership in the health care field.

Prior to joining Kaiser, McDermott served as vice president of accrediting and client services at URAC, an independent health care accrediting organization, and director, specimen administration for Ameritox, LLC., formerly a leader in pain medication monitoring.

A member of Leadership Maryland’s Class of 2018, an eight-month handson learning program for senior executives dedicated to building a better Maryland, McDermott is also a certified project management professional (PMP). She is vice chair for the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and a member of the boards of the nonprofit organizations Vehicles for Change and Excellence in Education Foundation for PGCPS, Inc. After graduating from the Mount with an undergraduate degree in international studies and Spanish, McDermott earned a Master of Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University. A member of the Mount’s Board of Trustees since 2013, she previously served as vice chair and secretary. She is the second woman and the first African American to lead the Mount’s board.

She gives generously of her time and talent to the university, including participation in the inaugural Alumni of Color Panel dinner in 2019 and a webinar for alumni on health care. She received the Academic Circle of Excellence Award, which recognizes distinguished Mount alumni who are leaders in their communities or in their chosen profession, in 2017.

Dr. Nadja Y. West Lieutenant General (Retired) Nadja Y. West is the 44th surgeon general of the United States Army and former commanding general of the U.S. Army Medical Command. She became the first Black surgeon general of the U.S. Army on December 11, 2015, and served in the position until her retirement in 2019. She oversaw the highest medical readiness of our forces and highest survival of battlefield wound rates in history.

Among her other firsts are becoming the first Black female major general of the Army’s active component in 2013 and Army Medicine’s first African American female two-star general.

Prior to serving as surgeon general, West was the principal medical advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In that role, she assisted in crafting the plan for U.S. government response to the Ebola crisis in Liberia in 2014.

West held numerous other leadership positions in the Army throughout the U.S. and overseas. She served as a 2019-2020 Hauser Leader for the Harvard Kennedy School Center for Public Leadership. She serves on the boards of Nucor Corporation, Tenet Healthcare Corporation, National Recreation Foundation and Americares.

West is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering and of the National War College with a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies. She attended the George TO BE REVIEWED Washington University School of Medicine, where she earned a Doctor of Medicine degree. West and her husband AND/OR UPDATED Don are the proud parents of two adult children, and currently live in Maryland.

ACADEMIC APPAREL The custom of wearing academic dress stems from the Middle Ages, when scholars were also clerics and wore the habit of their monastic order. The hood was originally a cowl attached to the gown, which could be slipped over the head for warmth. The cap was originally round but has changed to the varieties we see today. There are traditional mortarboard, soft beret and Florentine styles. Those who already possess a bachelor’s degree wear the tassels of the caps on the left side.

The gown varies for the respective degrees. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed and can be distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed to be open, with the arms worn through the slits in the elbows of the sleeve.

The doctor’s gown, often worn open, has full, bell-shaped sleeves with three horizontal bars stitched across the upper arm.

Black is the traditional color of the gowns. However, many faculty who hold doctorates wear gowns distinguished by the primary color or colors of the institutions that awarded the degrees. A velvet panel drapes around the neck and is stitched down the front edges. This velvet trimming may be either black or the same color as the velvet border of the hood.

The hood also varies for the respective degrees. The bachelor’s and master’s hoods are of the same design, pointed at the base. The bachelor’s hood is three feet long, while the master’s hood is three and one-half feet long. The doctor’s hood is four feet long, of full shape, and rounded at the base.

The silk lining of the hood represents the institution that granted the degree. If more than one degree is held, the gown and the hood of the higher or highest degree is worn. The hood lining may display either one or two colors to represent the school, the second color being a chevron crossing the principal color. The hood is bordered in velvet, in a color repeated on the sleeve bars and front-facing, and representing the field of study in which the degree was earned. Students also may be seen wearing honor cords or the honors medal. These cords and medals are awarded by discipline-based honor societies on the basis of excellent work in that field of study.

The Seal

The Mace

The Seal of Mount St. Mary’s University is surrounded by the Latin name of the institution, the location, the date of founding, and the name of the founder, Rev. John DuBois. Above the shield is a shamrock used in DuBois’ coat-of-arms when he was named Bishop of New York in 1826. Beneath the shamrock are the intertwined collegiate colors of pale blue and white.

Made of antiqued copper, suggestive of the sheathing on the DuBois Cupola, the head of the mace features five mitre-shaped panels. The shape of the panels refers to the multiple influence of the Mount on the Catholic Church and its episcopacy in America.

The shield is divided into four quadrants, each historically significant. In the upper left quadrant the DuBois Cupola is shown—the same symbol used during the 175th Anniversary celebration in 1983.

Directly opposite in the upper right corner appears the monogram AM, denoting the Ave Maria, a symbol of the Mount’s Catholic heritage.

The cross used in the lower left quadrant is from the Maryland coat-of-arms, representing Mount St. Mary’s contributions to the history of the state. In the lower right quadrant, the gold fleur-de-lis is used as a religious symbol as well as an expression of the French background of DuBois and Bruté. Below the shield, the institutional motto Spes Nostra (Our Hope) is displayed in a banner.

The Presidential Medallion The silver medallion was designed for the Mount’s 175th Anniversary celebration. It features Bishop John DuBois and Bishop Simon Bruté beside the DuBois Cupola and is inscribed with the name and origin of the institution: “Universitas Sanctae Mariae Ad Montes In Marylandia. Fundata, 1808.”

The official insignia, shaped within four quadrants of a shield found on the presidential medallion, is identical to the description of the individual panels of the Seal.

The 175th Anniversary medallion depicting John DuBois and Simon Bruté is inset in one panel. Each of the other four panels is embossed with one of the elements found in the quartered armorial bearings of the university.

These are the fleur-de-lis, the monogram AM, the DuBois Cupola, and the Maryland coat-of-arms.

At the apex of the mace, rather than another form of a cross or perhaps a decorative finial, a shamrock is used. This is another element from the crest of Mount St. Mary’s University. A Trinitarian, as well as an ethnic symbol, it was featured on John DuBois’ Episcopal coat-of-arms. Here, the device is made of hammered iron symbolic of the innate strength of this institution based on the spirit and strength of its founder and upon its continuing affirmation of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

A wooden processional torch, used in ecclesiastical ceremonies, and dating from about the time of the construction of the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception (1908), forms the shaft and support for the head of the mace. Just below the wooden support for the head of the mace is a twist of cord incorporating an element found above the shield in the crest.

The rusticity of the mace is deliberate, for not only in its symbolism and materials, but also in its crafting, the mace of Mount St. Mary’s is closely associated with the history and region of this venerable institution.

It was made in May of 1992 by Edward Stockman of Frederick, Maryland, a skilled craftsman and artist.
