ABOUT ABOUT

I am Mounika Venkatasami, an Architecture undergrad based in Bangalore and Chennai. The following document is a collection of work from the academic years 2018-2023. It consists of both academic and professional projects that I was a part of during this period.

Each of these projects showcase a unique set of challenges and opportunities, which pushed me to think critically and explore while creating meaningful designs. In addition to these architectural projects, through this portfolio I have tried highlighting various other skill sets like digital visualization, Architectural Model making and pencil sketching.

This location is closely connected to other IT hotspots such as Whitefield, Electronic City, Bommanahalli, Bommasandra, Marathahalli, Silk Board Junction, Anekal, Koramangala, Madiwala, and Outer Ring Road, making it a suitable place for this thesis design execution..

Sarjapur, till the beginning of the 21st century, was mostly rural in character and it was a place where a fair or jatre was held every Sunday. The fair was popular and people from Sarjapur and surrounding villages and even Anekal came here to buy and sell goods. The fair gave an opportunity to local farmers and growers to display and sell their commodities and small-time traders to sell their goods. The fair disappeared once Sarjapur was swallowed in the throes of urbanization.

/ Description

This thesis project presents the design of an Art Empowerment Centre dedicated to nurturing a sense of community among artists and the general public. The primary objective is to create a vibrant and inclusive space where individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together, collaborate, and develop meaningful relationships through artistic expression.

The Art Empowerment Centre aims to bridge the gap between artists and the broader community by offering a range of innovative programs and interactive experiences. By integrating workshops, exhibitions, performances, and community events, the center will provide a platform for artists to showcase their work, share their creative processes, and engage with audiences on a deeper level.

The design of the center emphasizes an open and welcoming environment. The architecture incorporates flexible spaces that accommodate different artistic practices, including studios, galleries, amphitheater and multipurpose areas. These spaces will encourage artistic experimentation, dialogue, and collaboration, fostering an atmosphere conducive to both individual growth and collective enrichment.

SITE LOCATION : ATMA, Ahmedabad

PROJECT TYPE : Institutional

The Brief of this project is adapted from the design competition that was held for the Council of Architecture's Centre of Excellence, back in early 2022.

The Idea was to Preserve and Restore the usage of Mill Owners' Association building, Ahmedabad - which was designed by star architect, Le Corbusier. Further making it function as a centre of excellence for COA, India.

/ DESCRIPTION

The Campus is designed with a concept of Fragmentation with respect to the program and functioning of the built v/s the unbuilt. The access to the precinct is Programmatically divided into Private, where entry is restricted to the COA members as well as logistics and Public i.e, for general public to enter and exit. The entire built up consists of five main elements. Namely, The host (Existing ATMA building), Guest 01 (Convention centre), Guest 02 (Administration office), Guest 03 (Resource centre) and lastly the Hybrid (The Hall of fame), which is the connecting element of the old with the new.

The hall of fame is placed at the first floor and is a connecting cabin which exhibits the best of archives in Indian Architecture. This cabin starts from the Atma building, overlooking a central courtyard in the ground floor and circulates across, connecting the admin to the resource centre and convention centre. The Administration building is the transitional block that has access to all key components of the campus. One can easily reach any part of the campus via the admin block. It's designed to help the maintenance staff have reach to all corners of the campus easily

The intership was a part of 7th semester academic requirement. Sandarbh design studio is an architectural design and construction firm based in Bangalore.

The team is head by Ar. Sairam Rai and Ar. Leena Rai. It is primarily a residential design firm. They enjoy designing for adaptive reuse of residences and interior design the most.

In my intership tenure, I gained experience in various aspects of how the construction industry functions. I was given the opportunity to supervise seven ongoing sites at different intervals of the tenure, in the process I developed interest for Project management.
