Chalkboard Capers Chalkboard Capers is a variety show presented annually by the staff of the Mounds View Education Association. The goal is to raise money for student scholarships given to graduating seniors from Irondale High School, Mounds View High School, REACH Academy, Area Learning Center, and Adult Basic Education. Each scholarship is for $621. The number of scholarships awarded depends on the financial success of the show. Get to Know ‘Em Meet Jessica Foster
My name is Jessica Foster and I am one of the new math teachers this year. I grew up in a small town in North Dakota, Watford City. I went on to attend the University of Northwestern St. Paul where I earned a B.A. in mathematics education and had the opportunity to play on the women’s basketball team. Last year I taught 6th and 7th grade at Fridley Middle School, and although I loved my time in a middle school, I have really enjoyed the transition to Mounds View High School. I live in Columbia Heights with my husband, Brian, who also graduated from Northwestern. When I’m not at school, I enjoy playing board games with friends and family, exploring the city, or relaxing in a coffee shop with a good book. In the winter I stay busy as an assistant basketball coach at a small school in Andover. I have really appreciated the warm welcome I have received at Mounds View, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year as I get to know more students and staff.
Meet Rachel Rogness My name is Rachel Rogness and I’m teaching the Philharmonic Orchestra this year at Mounds View High School, along with elementary orchestra at Valentine Hills. I’m new to the Mounds View school district, having taught for the past 13 years at Plymouth Middle School in the Robbinsdale school district. I grew up in Milwaukee, where I attended Milwaukee High School of the Arts. I moved to Minnesota in 2000 to attend the University of Minnesota as a music major, and studied viola with Korey Konkol. I student taught in Lima, Peru in 2005, and shortly thereafter began teaching in Robbinsdale and working on my master’s degree in Second Languages and Cultures at the University of Minnesota. I perform in the Twin Cities in a variety of settings, mostly on viola, although I did buy a hardanger fiddle (national instrument of Norway) last May and have begun playing with the Twin Cities Hardingfelelag. I live with my partner Sam in south Minneapolis, where we spend a lot of time outdoors with our dog Hollis (a rambunctious 2-year-old lab whose favorite food is socks) and gardening in the summer. My parents live in St. Paul, and I look forward to summertime, when my extended family descends on the Cities and heads north to our family cabin on Kabekona Lake. I am thrilled to be working in a district that places such a high value on the arts and music education, and have felt so lucky this year to be joining such an outstanding group of educators and students. I’m so grateful for the warm welcome I’ve received already, and look forward to continuing to build relationships with families and students and colleagues in the coming years.

Get to Know ‘Em Meet Liya Wegner
Hello, my name is Liya Wegner. I teach Chinese at Mounds View High School and Irondale High School. This is my first year in MV and my 9th year of teaching Chinese. I am originally from Shanghai, China. I have been living in the US for eleven and a half years. My husband and I have a boy, Caleb. He is five years old and in kindergarten. My husband is an EL teacher. I really enjoy teaching Chinese. I like being able to share knowledge about the Chinese culture and language with my students. In my spare time, I like spending time with my family and reading Chinese novels.
Alumni Kyra Condie (Class of 2014) hopes to climb her way to the top of the podium! She qualified for the Olympic climbing team, and will be competing next summer in Tokyo. She is one of two women representing the US in the first-ever climbing competition at the Summer Games. Condie’s climbing career almost never got off the ground. When she was 13, Condie had to have a spinal fusion surgery to correct a 70-degree curvature in her back due to severe idiopathic scoliosis.

The Bandana Project
Deans have partnered with student leaders Aunika Zheng (12), Cara Bortnem (12), Nora Henson (12), and Grant Peltier (11) to bring the Bandana Project to our school. The purpose of the Bandana Project is to train students and staff to be allies in promoting mental health awareness and increase access to support. Supporters tie a bandana on their backpack and carry resource cards to hand out to anyone who would like one. The Bandana Project was started at UW - Madison and was co-founded by MV alumni Taylor Iwaszko (Class of 2013). The Bandana Project has grown to many other college campuses and high schools. To date, over 125 students have been trained to be Bandana Project resource card carriers.

College Applications Remain Open
As seniors continue to determine what is next for them following graduation, college and university applications remain open. They are encouraged to complete applications as soon as possible. Though many colleges and universities continue to accept applications, many have deadlines of March 1. Application deadlines can be found on admission websites.
FAFSA
The 2020-2021 FAFSA is open. Students and families can complete the FAFSA in preparation for post-secondary enrollment for 2020-2021. Students and families hoping to access federal grants, state grants, and loans must complete the FAFSA. FAFSA information is located here: https://fafsa.ed.gov/. Resources, information, and help completing the FAFSA is available at Federal Student Aid, an Office of the U.S. Department of Education.
Minnesota Office of Higher Education
The Minnesota Office of Higher Education is an additional, excellent resource for students and families seeking information about post-secondary plans. The Minnesota Office of Higher Education offers publications, information, and materials covering the college search process, the financial aid process, and additional paying for college resources.
Genesys Works
Genesys Works provides current 11th graders the opportunity to earn a paid professional business technology internship with a Fortune 500 company like Optum, Target, and Ecolab. There are seven Mounds View students participating in Genesys Works interning at places like Medtronic and Land O’Lakes with the potential of earning $14,000. Senior Meryl Wang (Land O’Lakes intern) said: “I believe that Genesys Works is a helpful opportunity because it allows students to experience work in a corporate setting. It teaches important skills such as communication, teamwork, and time management so that students can succeed in their internships and future jobs.” Once in the program, students receive eight weeks of free training during the summer before their senior year. Students earn elective credit toward graduation. Interested students are encouraged to complete this interest form.

Mounds View Public Schools is committed to preparing all students for opportunities of their choice after high school, whether they choose college, a trade school, technical college, the military or employment. Health Office News Immunization Law Change for 2020/2021 Minnesota law requires that all children get vaccinated against certain diseases or have a legal exemption on file to enroll in school. Students entering 12th grade for the 2020-2021 school year need to have documentation or a legal exemption for the booster dose of the meningococcal vaccine. Most children received the initial dose of this vaccine when they entered 7th grade. Teenagers and young adults are at higher risk for meningococcal disease. This dose is important to make sure they are fully protected through their highest-risk years. Please schedule an appointment with your student’s health care provider to get this vaccine, or get a legal exemption before school starts in the fall. Ask your health care provider if you are eligible to receive free or low-cost vaccinations if you are concerned about costs. Return updated immunization records or legal exemptions to the health office at Mounds View High School. For a current copy of your teen’s vaccination record, call the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC) at 651-201-3980. For more information on meningococcal disease, go to Meningococcal Disease Basics on the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) website. If you need exemption information, the Immunization Form is available on the MDH website.
Feeling ill in school? As a friendly reminder from the Health Office, please note the following: If your child is not feeling well during the school day and would like to go home, please ask them to check out through the Health Office. The Licensed Health Specialist will connect with parents of ill students to discuss a plan for the remainder of the day. This process is important to follow in order to ensure attendance is marked accurately and students are accounted for while they are at school.

Information & Learning Center - ILC Rethink the Stigma In tandem with the Green Bandana Project, a new display has been added to the ILC. Rethink the Stigma encourages students to consider how many people struggle yet thrive while dealing with mental illness. Each celebrity pictured has spoken out about their experience with various mental illnesses. Available on the display are the local resource cards provided by the Green Bandana Project as well as a QR code to a page on the ILC website that lists emergency hotlines and mental health resources both local and national. Information & Learning Center - ILC Mustang Makerspace The Mustang Makerspace is an area where students can create what they imagine. Each month there is a new medium with which to create; think sewing, metal work, painting, 3D printer, laser engraver, etc. The Makerspace provides a space to decompress and take a break from academic expectations while stimulating creativity and building skills in new areas. Students have used a Cricut machine to design and create cards. They created a tool to use during finals week and beyond: mindfulness glitter jars. The glitter jars were seen throughout finals week giving students a few minutes to decompress and refocus.

Ralph Reeder Foodshelf Happy New Year to all of you! We are catching our breath this January after having the privilege of making the holidays brighter for thousands of district families. Thanks to overwhelming community support, our Thanksgiving for All Project provided bountiful amounts of food to nearly 900 registered families including a turkey with all the fixings and over 800 children, ages birth to grade 12, received wonderful gifts via our Operation Joy Toy Shop that took place on December 19th at the New Brighton Community Center. Thank you to those of you who hosted food, fund and gift drives to support the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf during this extra busy time of year.
Minnesota Foodshare As we bring in 2020, we are continuing to look for new ways to help meet the growing needs for food and other low income resources in our community, our neighborhoods and our schools and need your help. Each March, during Minnesota Foodshare, District 621 schools host food and fund drives as part of the Mounds View Schools Fill the Shelves Food Drive Challenge. March Foodshare starts March 1 and goes through April 12, although late February donations targeted for Foodshare will count too. Remember, a portion of all donations received (pounds and dollars) will be matched by Minnesota Foodshare in the form of a monetary donation back to our food shelf. In addition, for every dollar we receive, we can oftentimes purchase up to $8.00 worth of food when purchasing through hunger partners like Second Harvest Heartland. This is a very important month for food shelves across the state and there will be a lot of media buzz surrounding the Foodshare Campaign on WCCO.

Achievements & Awards SkillsUSA SkillsUSA Minnesota elected Sydney Dvorak (11) and Jacqueline Pennington (10) to serve as State Officers for 2020. In order to be placed on the ballot, students must complete an application which includes an essay, have three letters of recommendation, pass the SkillsUSA National test, give a speech to state delegates, create a campaign, as well as complete a panel interview with the SkillsUSA MN Board of Directors.
SkillsUSA prepares America’s high-performance workers. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communication skills. It emphasizes total quality at work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvement in community service activities. SkillsUSA members compete in over 100 events at the State SkillsUSA Leadership and Champions Conference. Students earning 1st place have the opportunity to compete at Nationals among the top 1% of Career and Technical Education students. For more information go to www.skillsusa.org.
Chess - National Master Linden Li (9) clinched the USCF 2200 rating and joins the rank of National Master. Linden started playing rated chess about three years ago and was a Chess Castle regular. His chess activity slowed down in 7th grade, when he discovered new enthusiasm and success in contest math, but this did not stop him from remaining passionate about chess. After his sister Alice’s gold medal win at the World Cadet this summer, Linden made a push toward the NM title and prevailed. “Many thanks to Chess Castle friends and Minnesota chess for making this possible. I hope to contribute in various capacities to Minnesota chess in the future,” says Linden.

Achievements & Awards Voice of Democracy Students wrote and recorded an essay with the topic of “What Makes America Great.” Neha Sriram (12) won, received a cash prize and competed in the VFW District 4 competition. Neha’s essay was awarded a certificate and a cash prize in the District 4 competition as well. Shivam Vashishtha (9) and Shatvika Sriram (9) were also student winners at the local level. National High School Athletic Coaches Association It is with great pleasure that the National High School Athletic Coaches Association announces the advancement of Ross Fleming from Mounds View High School as a finalist for the 2020 National High School Athletic Coaches Association national coach of the year in the sport of Cross Country. Eight finalists from across the nation will be honored during The National Coach of the Year Awards Banquet which will take place at the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s national convention at the Lincoln Station Great Hall in Lincoln, NE on the evening of July 23, 2020. The highlight of the banquet will be the naming of the NHSACA national coach of the year in nineteen recognized sports categories. Coach Fleming was nominated for this national honor by the Minnesota State’s High School Coaches Association. This selection was based on longevity, service to high school athletics, honors, championship years, and winning percentage. The nominees and finalists are evaluated by experts in the field of coaching using a sport-specific rubrics to assign points in each category. The National High School Athletic Coaches Association is the oldest coaches association in the nation formed by coaches, for coaches, and has been recognizing national coaches of the year since 1978.

From there, they participated in the Elite Nike Nationals in Oregon. Unbelievable season for the boys! Around MVHS PREP PREP students checked out this year’s Bartz Brothers snow sculpture in New Brighton, “Walvis the Whale”
“It’s over 260,000 pounds of snow,” said one of the builders, Austin Bartz. “It’s really something we’re passionate about and we love doing this and seeing everybody enjoy it.”
The Bartz Bros. snow sculpture is located on the front lawn of their home on the 2700 block of 16th Street Northwest in New Brighton.
“This has definitely been our hardest sculpture to date. This one took us over 800 hours to complete just due to the weather,” Austin Bartz said.
