Penelope: a childhood in the shadow of darkness

Every child deserves to grow up in safety, surrounded by love and stability. But for some, home is not a refuge — it is the very source of their terror. This is the story of one such child: a boy who grew up in the shadow of a mother consumed by forces he could not understand, in a household where violence was ordinary and death was never far away

He called his mother Penelope. Not "Mom." Just Penelope — a name that carried both intimacy and distance. She was thirty-five when she gave birth to him, her seventh child of nine. By his own account, she was not an evil woman. She was a desperate one

The woman behind the violence

Penelope believed she was a medium — not in any theatrical or commercial sense, but in a deeply sincere, all-consuming way. She believed spirits physically entered her body and took control. To her children, this was simply the reality they were born into. There was Penelope herself, and there were the others: Mulger, a malevolent entity she described as feeding on lost souls; and Marissa Louise, the ghost of a nineteenth-century cook who had poisoned seventeen families

Mulger was the most dangerous. Under his "possession," Penelope murdered two of her children, paralyzed a daughter, and mutilated a son. She demanded sacrifices. She burned down her own home. The violence was not random — it followed a logic, however twisted, rooted in her belief system.
