helped advance Michelin’s involvement in IMSA sports-car racing, including the new Porsche Carrera Cup partnership. In his three years, Michelin Motorsports says it was able to support all IMSA races through the pandemic.

Anzalone has served in several positions during his 11-year Michelin career, most recently as a strategic account director for Discount Tire and Tire Rack. Anzalone started his career in the automotive industry as a mechanic, working predominantly with Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari, the company says. He has worked closely with the motorsport teams since May to help prepare for his new role.Ménard

Although known predominately for his rallying exploits Hopkirk was more than up to the challenges of circuit racing which he fitted in between his rallying exploits. He ran in the British Saloon Car Championship in 1963/65 for the Cooper Car Company and in 1966 for Vitafoam Developments. In fact I remember and interesting conversation with him about running in Australia at the famed Mount Panorama, Bathurst circuit.

Michelin North America, Inc. has named Jason Anzalone director of motorsports, effective Aug. 1, 2022, succeeding Tony Ménard, who is returning to Michelin headquarters in France after three years in North America.

Under Ménard’s leadership, BFGoodrich achieved the 100th overall Score Baja victory and introduced the first 18-inch Baja T/A KR3 for Trophy Truck and Unlimited Truck classes. His tenure also includes three Baja 500 wins, two Baja 1000 wins, three Mint 400 wins and a victory at King of Hammers. Lastly, he helped continue the partnership of the Mazda MX-5 Cup, which highlights the development and competition of up-and-coming drivers, the company says.

The month of July was a sad time for us in MotorWerks Magazine when we lost a couple of good friends of the magazine.

Mini stalwart and the guy who put Mini on the motorsport map, Paddy Hopkirk passed away aged 89. Patrick Barron Hopkirk was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 14 April 1933. He learned to drive at age nine in what was basically an invalid carriage that was left to him in a local clergyman’s will.

The one thing for certain was that Paddy may have invented the term fan favorite! Anyone who met him certainly would be entranced by that Irish charm and would hang on every word. Whether as a lad he every kissed the Blarney Stone is unknown but he sure inherited the ‘Gift of the Gab’.

We took him to the Glen Motor Inn for dinner with it’s spendid views of Seneca Lake and excellent memrobilia from the F1 days at the Glen. We followed him around as he viewed the outstanding photos from back in the day. It was amusing to get the ‘craic’ from Paddy and find out which of them he would have been willing to go on vacation with. Everyone who attended the Festival left with fond memories of the gentleman from Belfast that proved Sir Alec Issigonisis wrong and showed that the Mini was a more than capable competition car.

While Peter Locke may not have been as well know as Mr Hopkirk he was another Celt who made his mark in motorsport in his home country. Born in Airdrie, Peter made Edinburgh his home and was well known for being a competitor and an official in Scotland’s Speed Championships, especially in the Lowlands.Ionly

During my Conquer Cancer ‘Hat a Day’ initiative he ordered an Adeneau ballcap from the Ring 24Hrs and had it sent directly from Germany to Canada. Since Peter passed away I have worn it proudly to all the motorsport events I have attended. Peter had suggested meeting up in 2019 and attending the Ring 24Hrs race together. He also said to bring my race licence and race gear and we

Staying with Paddy at local Miniac Patti Bloom Ely’s AirBnB, we found out that Paddy hated pillows piled on the bed, that if he was not fond of a person he would not say anything bad about the person but that ‘They are not good vacation material’ In another life I am sure Paddy could have had a career as a stand up comic. It was a weekend to remember for sure.

Peter was the last of the late brakers! Having watched him going into the hairpin at Fintray Hillclimb where nearly everytime the marshal was ready on the radio to call a red flag but oh wow Peter manage to pull his trusty RX8 round. I will never know how he managed that. He gave me a shot of his car one weekend at Boyndie where he genuinely wanted me to beat him but there was no chance of that as he knew that car like the back of his hand. The paddock already feels a quieter place without him but we will never forget him & his many gifts of Percy Pigs.

Darren Sheperd recently told us, “Peter was an amazing gent, he really helped me out getting more involved with racing and teaching me a few things after watching my lines, but he would help anyone out if he could, he was the life and sole of the racing community always with a smile on his face, he loved a joke and never ever let me forget about rolling the MINI at Doune. The current car stated life in 1991 as a 2.0 normally aspirated automatic Subaru Legacy GL that Damien obtained with 73k miles on the clock and only one careful lady owner from new. Paying the princely sum of $500 meant there was a lot of money saved on the original purchase that could be put to better use.

That event was all it took to get hooked on Time Attack and the car would go on to a huge transformation with a wide arch kit, large rear wing and front splitter. Steven Darley then joined the team and that led to some significant improvements to the car and Damien’s driving performance. We finished 2nd in class for the championship but after good friend Simon Roe (AKA Jolly Green Monster) passed away we lost some love for Time Attack as a team and we started to look elsewhere for another venue or motorsport to compete in. We continued to develop the car and competed in occasional sprint and Time Attack events when in 2018 Steven qualified for a team GB place at the European Masters hillclimb in Gubbio, Italy. With Stevens own car out of use, Damien generously lent his pride and joy to Steven for his turn at the wheel.

The new suspension absolutely transformed the car with both Damien and Steven taking seconds off long standing records and Damien even being crowned the fastest man on the Isle of Wight at an event full of WRC cars, one driven by the rally legend Miki Biasion. As great as the car was on the UK short complex hills, the real test would be a fast flowing European venue. A trip to Saint Goueno would see Damien take the title of the fastest ever UK/Irish tintop/saloon car. Sunday the 3rd of July saw grass roots motorsport return to the Toronto suburb of Oakville when the PADA Autoslalom Series Powered by Hagerty, Hitting the Road with Yokohama, ran it’s first event in the Oakville GO North parking lot. I remember autocrosses as they were called then running in that

Colin Caissie and Jay Tsang. This motorsport loving duo have been running the Pinnacle Advanced Driving Academy since 2016 and got together with two powerhouses in the industry, Hagerty and Yokohama to turn the series into reality.

Colin explained, “It is a very low-cost way for people to enter into the world of performance driving and motorsports as the speeds are lower than traditional race tracks. We believe our venue is one of the best in the GTA and it provides a

lot back when I moved to Oakville in the early ‘90s but I never had the opportunity to run there. It is a great location only 30 minutes West of Downtown Toronto and easily reached off the QEW Highway (and even better less than 10 minutes from my home in East Oakville)

And responsible for this happening are two stalwarts of the autoslalom community in the GTA,

He went on, “We have experienced coaches who will ride along with the competitor and pass on a few tips and help with their learning curve. It can be quite intimidating for newcomers who have never faced a sea of orange bollards before. Going off course and striking a bollard is no big thing, no damage done and everyone is safe. You can’t always say that about a race circuit, which is why we really like to promote Autoslalom as the perfect place for rookies to get their feet wet in motorsport without all the risks. It is the perfect first step on the motorsport ladder where they can fully understand the handling of their car and the importance of being at one with it, never mind having a blast while they are at it.”

Bryan Lemos who took the FTD at our first event is a perfect example of someone who has honed his craft in autoslalom. He has been participating for around nine years and that experience allowed him to best two Porsches and take the win by over a second. That experience more than qualifies him to take his VW Golf R and run at circuits like Canadian Tire Motorports Park’s GP track. He is a very capable driver.”Tesla

Throughout the day drivers get multiple runs to try and improve their time within their respected vehicle classes. We have looked closely at classing and have implemented a simplified class structure where the competitor can easily decide what class he wants to run.”

Attack competition with my modified Honda Civic. Autocross is a lot different from driving on a proper racing circuit, thinking quickly to navigate the cones was more challenging than I thought. I did this in a Tesla Model 3 STD range (base model) with stock everything including 500TW tires. I charged the car to 100% made my way to the event about 55km away, ran all day with the AC running and then drove home with still 50% battery life left. This was about $3 in electricity. The car was so much fun, had so much torque and with some sticky tires it would likely be a serious contender. I am planning to do a few more of these events this summer. I was a skeptic of these cars until I drove one, it is the future and I hope to see a lot more EVs enjoying these types of events.”

I have long believed that this particular entry level motorsport is something all beginners should really master before heading on to running on racing circuits. This is the first of a few articles we will run and this one starts off talking about the track itself. To the first-timer it looks nothing but a sea of cones! Once you understand how the cones are used to guide you through the track everything starts to become clearer.

To me the huge part of the PADA Autoslalom Series powered by Hagerty and Hitting the Road with Yokohama is that the DA of the company name stands for Driving Academy. Yes, that’s right this is an educational endeavour. Let’s face it, the driving education you get to pass your driving test really does not set any driver up for driving in places like Toronto or Los Angeles. Autocross is next level education, it teaches you about real driving and most importantly make one a betterSo,driver.you have arrived at your first autocross, you should have signed up before the event using something like Hagerty’s MotorsportReg.com. Next you can sign the waiver using the QR at the sign upThentable.there are two things that you must do before tearing around the cones, attend the drivers meeting and

they are not on track. Although your primary job is to ensure any cone that is moved out of place is reported in for scoring, you can also take the opportunity to watch others and become more familiar with the proper route through the cones. When replacing a cone be very aware where any cars are on track. Listen to your fellow marshals as they may be warning you of an oncoming car.

Now we can get down to the actual navigation of the track. The PADA series has published an image of the track before the actual event. Take the opportunity to print it off and have it handy as you participate in the track walk. Make notes on it if you need to.

Although there will be a hundred or so cones laid out, there is only a limited number that are really important for you to navigate through the course. Figure out which ones they are and make a point of understanding exactly where they are physically

A gate is exactly what it sounds like, two posts that you drive between except in this case it is two cones as shown below. Sometimes gates will have two vertical cones at each side. This is to indicate the gate is used twice, but be aware the direction taken when leaving the gate may be different form the first time it was used.

Time will be added to your run if you knock over a cone or move it OUTSIDE of the chalk box it was placed in. One of the important things any coach will tell you is to drive looking ahead, not looking down in front of the car at the next set of cones. Looking just over the hood tends to make it easier to strike cones as you tend to react slower driving like this.

A leaner (pointer) cone does exactly what it says! It points you in the direction you are required to go. It is positioned beside an upright cone that may be part of a slalom or some such feature. The photo below shows leaner cones indicating ‘Go Left’ and the next one, telling you to ‘Go Right’.

Those of you familiar with skiing will know exactly what a slalom is. Cones are positioned a set distance apart and you weave your way in and out of the cones. A pointer cone normally indicates which way you enter the slalom but when there is no pointer cone it is your choice on how to navigate

The Chicago Box is a mixture of a Box Turn and a Slalom. It is set up like a Box with three sides of the box being marked by cones close together. One of the longer sides is open other than the one cone that you have to slalom into the box, around the cone and continue on. It normally positioned on the longest straight so it can keep speeds to safe levels.

The Stop Box is the end of the course. It consists of two walls of cones positioned closely like other boxes, with an entry and exit gate. The exit gate is blocked by a cone that is removed by a marshal, signifying the run is complete.

Element 6 - Chicago Box or Bus Stop

A Box turn is setup where you enter a box marked out with cones through a gate and most commonly exit through another gate. On the odd occasion where space is not limited you may rotate around a centre cone and exit through the same gate. Box turns are easily identified because the cones are located close together as seen in the photo below.

Self-confessed Ford Fanatic Michael Sutherland is a Principal Mechanical Engineer in the nuclear industry in Caithness. Typical of many youngsters up North their love of all things mechanical tends to focus them on anything with wheels. In Michaels case his two passions could not be further apart. He competed actively in ploughing competitions with the local Young Farmers Clubs and was introduced to Autocross and Rallycross at age fifteen. He competed successfully for a couple years in a Mk1 Fiesta before the club folded and he had to travel further afield to satisfy his competitive needs. A trip to another kart track at Boyndie triggered a massive rebuild when the old Rally X engine ceased trading and blew a hole in the engine block big enough to put your fist in. Michael was not smiling when he said, “It blew up in spectacular style, just as things were all coming together. Then I got put in touch with a guy near Kames that was selling a well sorted sprint Fiesta but in a tired shell. I tried my hardest to buy the engine only but he wouldn’t budge so I bought the whole car for the dry sump All steel x flow that’s in Baby Blue now. “

Work & life commitments mean that Michael is unable to campaign a full hill and sprint championship this year but he is looking forward to getting to Fintray and Doune later in the year to see how he can improve on his personal bests after moving from the road car class to modified class. He knows that this season will not bring the results and accolades similar to last year. But he is planning for the future and that includes making an honest woman out of Louise Calder who is no slouch behind the wheel herself, piloting a Jedi

Junior drivers aged between 14 and 25 are eligilble to race the 230hp LRT NXT1 race carwhich is based on the electric MINI Cooper SE road car - in an “arrive and drive” concept for an all in cost of just 45.500€ for a full season in the onemake Cup series. The minimum age for driver is 14 with the maximum age being limited to 25. The car will feature a 230hp motor powered by a 30kWh battery which is FIA certified. The total weight of the car is 1190kg and the top speed will be limited to 200kph. The races will be approximately 20 minutes long, depending on the circuit. The cars have been thoroughly tested in varying conditions, ensuring that they can be raced at full pace during this time with no loss of power.

The LRT NXT1 race car was officially unveiled during the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) weekend at Knutstorp in Sweden on July 22-23. Following on from that weekend the LRT NXT1 be on display during several gokart and racing events throughout 2022, a road show plan will be revealed in due course.

The 14-year-old was present during the launch at Knutstorp along with several other junior drivers who got a comprehensive introduction to the series.

The Knox Mountain hill climb is the longest running sealed surface hill climb in North America. Having run in the Okanagan Valley of BC since 1958. It is also the last CACC recognized Hill Climb in Canada. The overall record has been held since 2007 by John Haftner in his highly modified turbo charged TUI SuperVee single seater. No one has ever really come close to his time of 1:37.065 since. The nearest competition being Joe Cheng in 2002 who managed a run of 1:43.834. But this year one racer got closer to the record than anyone else ever has!

fter a two-year COVID induced hiatus, the Leavitt Machinery Knox Mountain Hill Climb was back for its 63rd. running in Kelowna, BC this year. With fifty-five cars spread across seventeen different classes, and more than three thousand spectators in attendance it will go down in the record books as one of the best.

The hill only had two returning champions this year, 2018 King of the hill Andre Marzialli once again brought his massively modified 1999 BMW M3, but this was not destined to be his year. A slight mistake on run number two brought his weekend to an end when he struck a concrete no post close to the bottom of the hill. 2019 King of the hill Aran Iolo Cook was also back of 2022, but unfortunately a problem over the winter that had side lined his Arco X10 that he had driven to victory in 2019, this meant he had to bring his largely stock Mazda Miata, a car not fast enough to fight for overall victory. This did however leave the door wide open for the likes

of Mark Uhlmann, Garrett Mealing, Trevor Yip, Roger Sieber, David Neueaux and Brent Thorkelson to fight for the top spots.

This year he brought along his incredible carbon Fibre, BMW super bike powered Stohr WF1, a car that was more than capable of laying down fast times, but how would it deal with the many bumps on the Knox Mountain hill? Mark let everyone know his intentions for the weekend when his practise run was an incredible 1:47.569, just ten seconds down on the long standing record. He then chipped away the seconds before setting an unbelievable time of 1:39.989. A full eleven seconds faster than his nearest rival, and a mere 2.9 seconds off John Haftner’s fifteen year old record.

weekend following Knox, the goal was purely to have fun and keep the car safe. The car is obviously fast, but could not be less purpose built for hillclimb - it struggles with the bumpiness of the course and has considerably less power to weight than most true hillclimb cars. Given that, our expectations for the event were modest - I was hoping for a low-mid 1:4x for the weekend. When I came back from my warmup run and found that we went 1:47, I was floored - the car feels quick but it’s hard to get a sensation from inside the car exactly how quick. From there, we kept knocking time off as we worked through some car issues - but the commitment and risk to further reduce times was definitely becoming evident. Once we saw the 1:39, I knew it was time to park it given how many events were to follow. It was a great experience, I am not sure what’s next for me - the car can go faster but it will take an extreme commitment and risk tolerance to try to challenge for the overall record without

adding more power. We’ll see in 2023... more probably the week before! This left the battle for the other podium spots

and close to 600 wheel horse power, but he has never been able to take the GTM record away from Josh Vandekerkhove and his all wheel drive VW Rabbit.This would prove to be Mealing’s year however when his first officially timed run netted him a 1:52.252, which was good enough for him to take the long standing GTM record. The end of this run would also almost prove his undoing when a fuel fire broke out under the hood of his car as he came to the finish line staging area. With the front of his car engulfed in flames as he came to the finish, he has the quick thinking of his fellow drivers and the finish line marshals to thank for getting the fire out quickly and safely. Most people thought he was done for the weekend, but Garrett and his team worked late into the night to repair the fuel lines and barbecued wiring harness, to allow him to go even faster on Sunday! His second timed run on Sunday netted him a 1:51.379 cementing him into second place overall and smashing the old GTM record by more than three seconds.

This left the battle for third place to rage on Sunday between Trevor Yip, and Roger Sieber. Both drivers had very mixed results on Sunday, Trevor

could not improve on his time from Saturday, despite another run in the mid 1 minute 54 seconds halfway through Sunday. Roger Sieber was plagued with technical difficulties on Sunday, his first run of the day showed promise with a 1:56.499, but this still left just over a second for Roger to find if he wanted that third spot on the podium. Then run number two the drive chain snapped, then on run three the intake manifold was blown clean off the throttle bodies by the boost trying to ram its way through! This left one final run to try and eek that second out of the car and the hill, with a ratchet strap holding the intake manifold down to the engine block he set off for his hail Mary run, and what a run it turned out to be, by the time Roger reached the top he had set a time of 1:53.320 good enough for third place overall.

We had four ladies come to challenge for Queen of the Hill this year, favorite was always going to be returning Queen of the Hill Jennifer Ocker in her absurdly fast Subaru Impreza, but behind her was a trio of ladies in some very quick Honda’s.

Jennifer told us, “I had only been to Knox once before, in 2019. I lost my transmission on my fifth run and had a score to settle with that mountain! My goal was to go under 2 minutes in 2022, so finishing with a 1:55 this year felt really good. I know where I can shave off more time for

As can be seen above an event like the Leavitt Machinery Knox Mountain Hill Climb cannot be run without the support of a great bunch of volunteers and we sure have that on Knox Mountain. Even after two years off the response we had from regulars was amazing, that all wanted to come back and be a part of this great event.

It was great seeing all the fans at the food trucks and in the beer gardens. There was a rumour that we may have been the ones who started the Great Okanagon Beer Drought but as long as our fans had fun were are happy. See you next year for more Knox Mountain motorsport fun.

I attended every event I could, including track days and event the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at Knockhill. The UK Time Attack series had just been going for a year or two and I of course I attended and published my photos on Facebook and Flickr. Somehow my photos caught the attention of a magazine editor, which led to me covering almost every round of the UK Time Attack series from 2010 onwards at world famous circuits like Brands Hatch and Silverstone. I also started supplying images from Knockhill race events to the Daily Record

I got my first DLSR camera as a birthday present in 2007 – a Canon 400D with the basic 18-55mm kit lens. Like a kid with a new toy, I immediately started taking hundreds of photos of anything and everything - from landscape, pets, the moon, and of course motorsport. I returned to my local events at the Fintray hillclimb and Alford sprint and took photos of a few friends who were competing that year. Being digital, I no longer had to wait two weeks to find out that my photos were rubbish – I could see the dreadful results instantly!

For such a small country Scotland has some great places to shoot motorsport. The Guyson Sprint and Hillclimb Championship has some amazing venues where people can shoot from the public areas and Scotland’s remaining race circuit Knockhill is easily reached by crossing the River Forth near Edinburgh.

The British Touring Car Championship has a long history at Knockhill, having first came to the Scottish venue in 1992. As you can see from the photos older Super Touring cars still stretch their legs on the 1.27 mile long circuit that is sometimes run in reverse direction. One thing John assures us is that the BTCC weekend is absolutely a must visit meeting unlike any other in Scotland.
