MSA issues rally safety progress report The MSA can report significant progress in its response to the Scottish Government’s Motorsport Event Safety Review (MESR), which published 29 recommendations for UK stage rallying in January. The MSA committed to implementing the recommendations in a staged manner over approximately two years, until early 2017. Now known as RallyFuture, this programme of procedural and cultural change has made great progress on several fronts. Safety Delegate In February the MSA confirmed the new role of Safety Delegate, with MSA Director Nicky Moffitt appointed to the post in Scotland on an interim basis. The Safety Delegate has overriding authority in matters of safety and is now an essential part of events north of the border. Further Safety Delegates will soon be appointed to cover all multi-venue stage rally events across the UK.
Radio frequencies A second radio frequency was brought online for exclusive use by MSA Licensed Officials and safety personnel on stage rallies in Great Britain. The second MSA81 frequency allows for better management of rallies, particularly when there are stages running concurrently. Significant grant funding was made available to help retune and service existing MSA81 radios, or to replace them where necessary to accommodate the additional frequency.
Multi-Venue Stage Rally Safety Requirements Published on 24 April and with effect from 1 June, this document detailed how UK rallies must currently be run. It covers topics including risk management, marshals’ training, communication and much more. This document will be superseded by the 2016 Stage Rally Safety Requirements, which will also apply to Single-Venue Stage Rallies and Rally Timed Trials. These are currently being developed and will include detailed guidance for the production of event safety manuals and stage set-up diagrams.

Safety Car Roles & Responsibilities This document was published on the MSA website on 1 July, establishing protocols to improve and enhance the safe running of special stages throughout the UK. A pair of pilot training workshops for safety car crews has also been held. More will be run soon, including a unique workshop for closed-road events.
Media accreditation A positive and productive meeting of rally media was held in mid-July. This established the framework for a new rally media accreditation system from 2016; the accreditation documents, procedure and guidelines will be made available as soon as possible.
Online marshals’ accreditation and training A new online accreditation and training system for rally and cross country marshals is in development and scheduled for launch in January 2016. Full details will be announced in due course but it is envisaged that there will be three modules, providing training in the basic marshalling skill sets required of rally and cross county marshals.
Volunteers’ recognition scheme Plans are being developed for a volunteers’ recognition scheme to recognise the hard work and dedication of volunteer marshals and officials, without whom the sport could not function. The scheme is due to launch in 2016 and it will cover the full spectrum of volunteers, not just in rallying but across the disciplines. Full details will be announced in due course.
Tracking systems Four different rally tracking systems have been live tested this year on the Mid Wales Stages and the Scottish Rally, with a fifth set to be tested on another event in October. This has led to some systems being discounted on grounds of functionality and/or cost, while others continue to be evaluated.

Grant-aid The British Motor Sports Training Trust (BMSTT) has offered grant aid towards the purchase of red and white safety tape and additional Spectator Warning Notices required under the multi-venue stage rally safety requirements. Eligible clubs can claim up to 60 per cent of additional expenditure totalling up to £750 in 2015.
MSA commitment Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive and Chairman of the RallyFuture Project Steering Group, said: “A few months ago the Forestry Commission made plain that for it to offer a new Master Agreement, the sport must commit to the Motorsport Event Safety Review’s very carefully considered recommendations. Having done so, we are now well advanced with a far-reaching programme of change. “That is cultural as much as procedural change; as such it challenges the status quo and divides opinion in some quarters. However we see this very much as an opportunity not just to secure the future of UK stage rallying but to set new standards for the rest of the world to follow. “None of what the governing body has achieved would have been possible without the overall support of the rallying community and I cannot thank them enough for being with us.”

WRGB to celebrate McRae title The 20th anniversary of the late Colin McRae’s World Rally Championship (WRC) title win will be celebrated at this year’s Wales Rally GB (12-15 November). The 1995 champion will be honoured with a number of special displays and parades at the 2015 event. His father Jimmy – himself a five-time British Rally Champion – will be part of the celebrations. Not only will Jimmy provide the title-winning Subaru Impreza 555 from the family’s personal collection for display at the Deeside Service Park, he also will be contesting the Network Q WRGB National Rally.
“That week down in Chester [in 1995] is still one of the highlights of our lives,” said Jimmy. “It was such a proud moment for us all. What could possibly be better than Colin winning the World Championship on home soil? It’s now hard to imagine that 20 years has passed since that amazing day but it’s very thoughtful that Wales Rally GB will be marking Colin’s greatest moment later this year. “I competed on last year’s National Rally and was absolutely amazed by the crowds – it really was like what I think of as the good old days. For all the obvious reasons I’m sure this year’s event will be even more special.”

Solberg named WRGB Rally Legend Motor sport star Petter Solberg will be the official ‘Rally Legend’ at this year’s Wales Rally GB (12-15 November). The 40-year-old Norwegian – nicknamed ‘Hollywood’ – is one of only two drivers to have won Rally GB four times (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005). He is also the reigning FIA World Rallycross Champion and the only man to have won FIA world titles in two different disciplines. “As many already know, this is an event which is very close to my heart for so many reasons,” said Solberg. “Rally GB was the first round of the World Rally Championship I ever won [in 2002] and I can never forget that feeling. I thought the feeling couldn’t be beaten. But it was, 12 months later, when I came back to Wales and won the World Rally Championship – now that was a party! “Obviously, every driver wants to achieve these kinds of goals at their home event, if possible. That wasn’t possible, but Wales was like a second home event for me; if it couldn’t be Norway then I was so happy it was in Wales. My co-driver, Phil Mills, is of course from Wales and it was fantastic to feel the support and the passion from so many fans.”

The MSA’s Environmental Award was created in 2011 to recognise truly exceptional or outstanding contributions towards environmental responsibility and the active promotion of sustainability within motor sport activities, events and communications. In 2012 The Rt Hon the Lord Drayson became the inaugural recipient for Drayson Racing Technologies’ excellent B12/69EV electrical prototype racer. The following year Williams Hybrid Power won this award for its ingenious flywheel energy recovery systems. These winners have been engraved on MSA’s stunning new trophy which has just been made to honour this prestigious award. The trophy will not necessarily be presented annually and will only be awarded if a truly exceptional or outstanding nomination is received. The solid Silver and Malachite trophy pictured with its English Burr Walnut case is an MSA Board award for which an exhaustive selection process for its production was undertaken throughout the UK. The winning design was submitted and subsequently executed by Helen M London, an inspiring young artist specialising in Sterling Silver work (www.helenlondon.co.uk). Helen has been working as a silversmith for ten years, having graduated from her degree course in 2005. In 2006 she became self-employed and jumped at the opportunity to design and create this trophy for the MSA. This large scale project was a perfect next challenge for Helen. She was drawn to the engineering aspect required but feels that her greatest achievement is how her elegant design conceals the complexities of the handmade construction. “From start to finish”, she said, “the project took me nearly a year to complete. Each piece of the trophy had to be made
separately and could only be fitted together in the last few days of construction. So it was a really lovely moment finally to put all the pieces together and see my design depicting a ‘Cradled World’ come to life before my eyes.” The English Burr Walnut case was hand produced by award winning designer/maker John Jacques from Radiance Furniture Design (www.radiancefurniture.co.uk). John creates beautiful, original fine furniture from his studio workshop in Wiltshire. His work combines functionality and innovation, with each piece designed and crafted to the highest quality. John said, ‘It was really good to be involved in the process to create the case for MSA’s Environmental Award, and great to collaborate with Helen on this exciting project.’ James P Hollins was appointed by MSA to oversee production as he is an expert in period antiques with a wide knowledge of precious objets d’art and production techniques. “I was really delighted to lead this project for the MSA and to achieve such an outstanding result. Helen and John are very talented and I expect to see further great things from them both”, he said. The MSA welcomes nominations for this award until mid-October each year and the 2015 deadline is set for Friday, 16 October. Hamilton and Todt present MSA road safety prizes at Monza The MSA Road Safety Film Competition’s two winning teams collected their prize cheques from reigning F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and FIA President Jean Todt at the Italian Grand Prix last weekend (5-6 September). As part of the FIA Action for Road Safety campaign and in association with Allianz, the competition invited young people aged 16-24 to submit short films about one of the FIA’s 10 Golden Rules for Safer Motoring. Team Gell and Team Kindsense scooped the once in a lifetime opportunity to meet Hamilton and enjoy an exclusive tour of the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team garage with their respective films ‘Worth It’ and ‘Pause’, which were judged by Hamilton to be top of a highly competitive entry.

Justin Wilson, 1978-2015 The MSA sends its condolences to the family and friends of British racing driver Justin Wilson, who succumbed to injuries sustained in an IndyCar Series race at Pocono Raceway last month. He was 37. Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “On behalf of the UK governing body, where we were so proud to follow Justin’s great career, we were shocked and saddened that his life ended so prematurely. We offer our sincere condolences to Justin’s family, friends and many fans at this very difficult time. From his karting days through to IndyCar, Justin was a credit both to himself and to the sport he loved.”
Justin hailed from Sheffield in Yorkshire and began his motor sport career in karting, in the late 1980s. He graduated to cars in Formula Vauxhall Junior in the mid-’90s and in 2001 was crowned champion of F3000 – then the feeder series to Formula One. He made his F1 debut with Minardi in 2003 and spent the second half of the season with Jaguar. A subsequent move to the US yielded great success, with race victories and title challenges in the Champ Car World Series and subsequently the IndyCar Series, where he remained a podium finisher right up to this season. Other highlights of a brilliant career included victory in the 2012 Daytona 24 Hours.

Go Motorsport Regional Development Officers East Midlands and West Midlands The MSA is seeking a motivated individual to assist with the Go Motorsport development programme in the Midlands region. Following a recent review of the RDO network structure and to further develop the programme across the UK we are dividing up the current ‘East’ Region creating these two exciting roles and an opportunity to be a part of a dynamic team helping to grow motor sport from the grassroots. The ideal candidates will be confident and articulate as the role will involve working with local motor clubs and making presentations to groups. Mansell reunited with trophies at Motor Sports House Former F1 champion Nigel Mansell visited Motor Sports House yesterday to be re-presented with the British Grand Prix trophy that he won four times between 1986 and 1992. The famous gold-plated trophy – officially known as the Royal Automobile Club trophy – has been awarded to the winner of the British Grand Prix since 1948. Little is known of its origins but it is Victorian hallmarked and features the Eton motto, ‘Floreat Etona’ (‘let Eton flourish’). Therefore it may have been a gift to the Royal Automobile Club from founder member Sir Charles Rolls, an alumnus of Eton. Mansell was also re-presented with the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the most successful British or Commonwealth driver in the previous year’s F1 season. It was first presented in memory of Mike Hawthorn, who became Britain’s first F1 champion in 1958 but tragically died a year later. MSA Chief Executive Rob Jones presented both trophies before introducing Mansell to the staff and explaining the functions and remit of the modern MSA as the governing body of UK motor sports. “Rob Jones mentioned to me at the British Grand Prix that I had won the prestigious Hawthorn Trophy seven times, still more than any other driver, yet I didn’t recall ever having been presented with the trophy,” said Mansell. “We then got on to discussing the British Grand Prix Trophy which again despite winning it five times I didn’t recall having been presented with either so I was delighted to visit the MSA and to be formally handed these iconic motor sport trophies.”

MSA’s Blunt makes rallycross debut MSA General Secretary, Simon Blunt, enjoyed his competitive rallycross debut in the Power Maxed Swift Sport Championship at Lydden Hill on Bank Holiday Monday (31 August). Blunt took part in the MSA British Rallycross Championship meeting at the invitation of Swift Rallycross’s Sarah Watson and Lydden Hill’s Pat Doran. He competed aboard a Go Motorsportliveried Suzuki Swift rallycross car, completing three heats and the final. Blunt said: “For me there were two main challenges to overcome. One was driving competitively on a loose surface, which I’d never done before. The other was competing in a front-wheel-drive car, which felt nothing like my rear-wheel-drive race car and required a different driving technique.
“I enjoyed the experience tremendously and can’t thank Sarah and Pat enough for the opportunity. It was great fun from start to finish – I was grinning all day long and found the paddock a very welcoming place to be.”

MSA Trainers briefings 2016 In 2016 there will be a number of regional training days between late January and April, rather than a briefing at Birmingham’s NEC during Autosport International. The training days will coincide with the next round of MSA Officials Seminars but will run as separate whole-day sessions, led by a member of the Training Working Group. Further details will be available in due course. Anyone organising training days during this period is kindly requested to advise the MSA on training@msauk.org so that date clashes can be avoided.
Training Instructors courses 2015 The MSA currently has 90 Training Instructors, 41 Lead Trainers, nine Training Coordinators and 26 undergoing post -Training Instructor coursework. This is a very healthy number of hard-working volunteers but if your club wishes to nominate further individuals to undertake this training, please contact MSA Training Executive Alan Page on training@msauk.org. We are currently looking to deliver two further Training Instructors courses this year – one in September and another in November.
MSA Club and Unlicensed Officials Seminars 2016 The 2016 MSA Officials Seminars will be reserved primarily for unlicensed Club and Event Officials, typically including – but is not limited to – Club Stewards, Secretaries of the Meeting and unlicensed Clerks. The workshop-based days will aim to exchange views and information to assist clubs’ future development and encourage liaison with the MSA Regional Development Officers (RDOs). Dates and venues are to be confirmed, however invitation letters will be soon sent to all Regional Associations and MSA-registered clubs, requesting their nominations for attendance. It is important that attendees do not arrive on the day without prior notification.

Appointment: MSA Training Executive Alan Page has been appointed MSA Training Executive, after Training & Education Director Allan Dean-Lewis stepped back to a consultancy role. Page takes over responsibility for all the training matters previously overseen by Dean-Lewis, who will still process and administer all Club Development grant-aid requests, among other responsibilities. MSA Radio Seminars 2015 The next round of the MSA Radio Seminars for Licenced Radio Co-ordinators, Controllers and Probationary Controllers will run nationwide between October and December. These one-day weekend seminars are likely to be held in Bristol, Luton, Manchester, Perth and Belfast. Dates and venues will be publicised when confirmed. In the meantime, any enquiries should be directed to training@msauk.org.

BMSTT-supported training days In 2014 the British Motor Sports Training Trust (BMSTT) – a registered charity – approved grants totalling over £200,000 to support training projects, including marshals’ training days, Advanced Trauma Life Support and medical training days for doctors and paramedics.
In August organisers of volunteer officials training events were invited to complete the BMSTT Grant Aid application forms with details of their event and estimated training budgets for 2016. Bids must be submitted by 20 September 2015 and all applicants will be notified of the outcome in November.

Club Child Safeguarding Officer training courses The MSA recognises that many Club Child Safeguarding Officers have received limited training and any training they have received may not align with current government guidelines and the recently launched MSA Club Child Safeguarding Policy. Therefore the MSA is planning a number of evening training seminars for licenced Club Child Safeguarding Officers – any who have previously held that licence and continue to perform the role, plus any others intending to apply for this appointment within the next 12 months. All seminars will commence at 7pm and last approximately three hours. There will be limited capacity at all venues.
Regional Committees are requested to pass this information on to individuals currently performing in this role within their association, including those who intend to apply for this appointment in the near future. Enquiries should be directed to childsafeguarding@msauk.org

MG Car Club The MG Car Club’s MG Trophy Championship presented a £700 cheque to Macmillan Cancer Support at the club’s offices in August. Championship Co-ordinator Pete Macwaters and Treasurer Amy Bray met up with Macmillan’s Anna Fowler at Kimber House in Abingdon to make the donation. Macwaters said: “This is the third year in a row where we have increased our charity donation; the drivers made contributions of £651 and the championship rounded this up to beat our previous total. This is the second year we have supported Macmillan and all the race cars run with the Macmillan sticker on the windscreen to show our support for this excellent charity.”
BMMC & BRMC (NI) The British Motorsport Marshals’ Club (NI) and its sister club, the British Rally Marshals’ Club (NI), set up an information and recruitment stand at the NI Speed Weekend in Balmoral Park, near Lisburn, on 31 August. The marshals working on the stand were very active in raising awareness of volunteering in motor sport and encouraging new members. They mingled with members of the public as they walked around the show and acquired signatures from more than 30 people, each of whom will receive further information and an invitation to a taster day. The club members are commended for their efforts in encouraging new faces to become club members. Well done!

MSA widens historic rally tyre options The MSA has announced regulation changes that widen the range of eligible tyres in historic stage rallying. “This regulation change will give competitors a wider choice of suitable and eligible tyres, and will make the administration and application of the regulations easier to understand and apply,” said Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive. The new regulations are as follows: Wheels, Tyres and Brakes 49.10.1. Wheels and tyres must be fitted in compliance with L3., 49.6. except as follows, 48.5.1., 48.5.2., 48.5.4., 48.5.6-8. and 48.5.10.-14. and; 49.10.2. For Categories One, Two and Three the diameter of wheel may not differ from that originally fitted by more than 10%. 49.10.3. For Categories One, Two and Three the complete wheels (flange + rim + tyre) are free providing that they are housed within the permitted bodywork and that they do not exceed the following widths in relation to the cubic capacity of the car: Up to 1150 cc: 7in Over 1150cc and up to 1600 cc: 8in Over 1600 cc: 9in. 49.10.4. For Category Four, and vehicles competing under 49.2., wheels and tyres must comply fully with FIA Appendix K Regulations for Cars in Rallies. 49.10.5. The fitting of a dual master cylinder or any other type of device providing a simultaneous action on all four wheels and divided action on two wheels is permitted, provided the original brake pedal and pivot point are used and they cannot be adjusted to affect brake balance by either the Driver or the Co-Driver when normally seated in the car.
Cadet class minimum driver weight With effect from 1 January 2016 there will be a minimum driver weight implemented in the Cadet class, for all engines, e.g. IAME, Honda and Comer. This minimum driver weight will be 27kg and is to be measured in the same way as other classes, i.e. with only mandatory racewear/PPE (overalls, helmet, gloves, boots) and not additional items such as rib protectors etc. MSA General Regulation (U)17.29.6 sets out these specific requirements.
Helmet Cameras Competitors are reminded that any modification to a helmet renders it invalid, including the addition of cameras by whatever attachment. Modern cameras may be lightweight but helmet weight is critical; the lower the helmet’s weight, the better for minimising neck injuries, hence why modern helmets have been developed not only to increase penetration resistance and energy absorption but also to reduce weight. Mounting a camera on a helmet also creates the possibility of concentrating an impact load. Spreading an impact load over the largest possible area lessens the impact.
2016 Honda Cadet regulations There are two changes due to come into effect for the Honda Cadet class in 2016. The first is the mandatory requirement for a non-return valve to be fitted to the fuel tank breather pipe. The second is the introduction of a new exhaust for the class, which will be included in the regulations with effect from 1 January 2016 but is likely to become mandatory with effect from 31 March 2016. Details of the exact exhaust system – and the date at which it will become mandatory – will be announced in an official bulletin when available.

MSA co-driver Hall chosen for Toyota opportunity MSA Academy co-driver Phil Hall has been selected to join the new Toyota Gazzo Racing Challenge Programme, competing aboard an R4 Subaru Impreza alongside Japanese driver Hiroki Arai. The opportunity arose when instructor Jarmo Lehtinen asked MSA Performance Director Robert Reid to suggest an Englishspeaking co-driver for Arai. Reid consulted with Grist and the pair agreed upon Hall, aged 26 from Nottinghamshire.

Arai and Hall are contesting Finnish and Polish championship rallies this year. Hall attended a training camp in Finland ahead of their first event, August’s Turku Rally. Performance Master Classes In recent weeks MSA Coaches have visited various circuits around the country to deliver one-to-one coaching and presentations to junior drivers in a range of disciplines. Over the bank holiday weekend James Wozencroft worked with Junior Rally UK drivers at Glan-YGors Kart circuit, providing in-depth presentations on technical driving, sports psychology and anti-doping, before discussing future options. Two weeks later James was back at the North Wales track with Formula Kart Stars drivers, working on an individual support basis for two days. Fellow MSA Coaches Duncan Tappy and Adam Gould worked with competitors in the BARC Junior Saloon Car, MSA Formula and Junior Rallycross Championships at Snetterton, Rockingham and Lydden Hill. While at Lydden, Gould also delivered a nutrition session and also supported MSA General Secretary Simon Blunt on his Rallycross debut (see page 13).

Inaugural Go Motorsport Live! – Scotland a success

SCOTLAND The first GoMotorsport Live! – Scotland event took place last month at Knockhill Racing Circuit, where 10 motor clubs showcased all the sport’s disciplines and encouraged the public to get involved as competitors, marshals or club members. The event took place alongside a Scottish Motor Racing Championship (SMRC) meeting, which provided live action on the track and attracted a healthy crowd to the club displays. The event gave visitors a chance to try karting, while the 750 Motor Club ran AutoSOLO demonstrations and ran passenger rides. 750 MC member Daniel Rae said: “It was great to show people first-hand how the drivers control the cars and how we follow a course. Lots of

people were surprised that this is something that supervised 14-year-olds can do. One lad said he’d rather do this than play on his Xbox! We had around 55 people experiencing a passenger ride. The affordability of autotesting surprised people too; £20 for a day’s fun is a real bargain!” The Scottish Hill Rally Club displayed several vehicles and a rescue unit. The club also carried out a mock rescue, cutting up a car to retrieve a trapped passenger.

There is no way that I am going to sign up with the MSA to be on the bottom rung of the ladder, spending years getting one upgrade at a time before I can do the same job again’.
Bisping attends Emergency Services Show… On Sunday 13 September Go Motorsport is hosting an Autotest at the Emergency Services Show at Hullavington Airfield, Wiltshire. Based in the Go Motorsport Arena, the Autotest will run from 10am-4pm, giving passengers the opportunity to experience entry level motorsport. The Autotest will be run by Devizes and District Motor Club and Bath Motor Club. Andrew Bisping, Go Motorsport RDO in the South, said: “When we attended for the first time last year, passenger donations contributed to a record breaking total of over £30,000 donated to blue light charities. “But you don’t have to start on the bottom rung… “You can apply for a higher grade part way up the scale if you submit a paper application with your motorsport CV – a list of the roles you’ve held and training completed – and get a club to sign it for you. “You don’t have to be a member of the motor club; you could get a Regional Association to endorse your application. The MSA will consider each case individually on its merits, but they are keen on formal training, so make sure you mention any training that you’ve had. “You can also apply for multiple roles at once - for instance, you could apply for Timekeeping Marshal, Sector Marshal and Radio Marshal at the same time if you are experienced in all these jobs. “We recommend you to register for as high a grade as you can justify. If motorsport is to continue then it is up to us all to help!”
… And Hampshire Autocross Southsea Motor Club and Farnborough District Motor Club hosted the Syd Taylor Barley Mow Autocross at Meonstoke in Hampshire last month. Among the 35 drivers, three were first-timers. These included 15-yearold Matthew Hudson and his stepfather Harry Sherrard; while Harry had competed in racing and rallying, it was Matthew’s first event using his MSA Competition Licence. Go Motorsport RDO Andrew Bisping watched Matthew’s first Autocross and asked him about the experience. “I enjoyed it more than grass Autotests because I preferred going fast round a circuit and improving my time rather than going around cones and getting confused,” said Matthew. “I think it’s more competitive than grass Autotests and more of a step towards rallying, rallycross or racing. I learned to hit the apex of corners and how to improve my time”. Bisping added: “It was really refreshing to see a young man actively involved in the preparation and running of his car and thoroughly enjoying the driving too. It was also great to see nearly 10 per cent of the field being newcomers, which is a great reminder to us all to encourage newcomers and for the wider community of competitors and organisers to help them settle in and become long-term participants.”

BTCC champ Turkington drives at NI Speed Weekend PCA demo BTCC star Colin Turkington was on hand for the Northern Ireland Speed Weekend, which attracted thousands of visitors to Balmoral Park near Lisburn over the bank holiday weekend Attractions included rally demos, sprint demos and drifting. Despite this, Turkington spent most of his time at the Go Motorsport Production Car Autotest demo! He even got behind the wheel of a few cars, taking members of the public out for passenger rides.
Around 20 demo drivers attended with their own cars, giving up their free time to let members of the public jump in beside them. More than 300 passenger rides were enjoyed, with 160 members of the public signed on for runs by MG Car Club and Ulster Automobile Club member Carol Willis. A couple of passengers also became members of motor clubs, so hopefully they will be seen at other events in the not too distant future!

Around 40 members of the public enjoyed passenger rides at the Ulster Automobile Club’s Go Motorsport Production Car Autotest demo, held in County Down on 5 August. Despite the inclement weather, spectators came out in force to watch the demonstration runs in the seafront car park, with a number of them signing on to experience the thrills of motorsport first hand.
Magherafelt and District Motor Club was another Northern Ireland-based club that organised a Go Motorsport Production Car Autotest demo in August. Held at the NI Car Cruise Show just outside Ballymoney on the afternoon of 22 August, more than 30 show visitors signed on to experience passenger runs in the Production Car Autotest vehicles.

GoMo takes club motor sport to Santa Pod Go Motorsport held an Autotest demonstration during last month’s Junior Drag Day at Santa Pod, where visitors were offered passenger rides and the chance to change a rally car’s wheel.
Alison boosts Paula’s Big Adventure Scotland RDO Alison Clark was contacted recently by Paula McGuire, a journalist for Scottish newspaper The National who occasionally features on STV and BBC Radio Scotland. Throughout her twenties Paula suffered from anxiety and to overcome it she set herself a challenge: to try the 15 jobs most coveted by schoolchildren. So far she has wing-walked, flown in a fighter jet and undergone astronaut training. Becoming a racing driver was also on her list and she turned to Alison for help. Alison decided to raise the bar even higher and challenged Paula to codrive on a competitive asphalt rally. Solway Car Club considered Clark’s proposal and agreed for Paula to sit with Euro Car Parts sponsor Peter Stewart on the Solway Coast Rally. The pair finished the rally 19th overall and won their class, before a delighted Paula wrote up a feature for The National. “I can’t remember there ever being a double-page spread in any national newspaper on grassroots motorsport,” said Alison. “To have so much exposure and such a well written, positive article was fantastic. Paula really felt part of the rallying family, and was made to feel very welcome. Of all the challenges the tried, this was the one she enjoyed most.”
Hundreds of rides were given and the Go Motorsport team provided further information and guidance on where the visitors could find their local motor club. “It was rewarding to host a group of young carers who spend much of their life supporting a parent or other family member. They produced the broadest smiles of the day,” said Andrew Bisping, Regional Development Officer (RDO) for the South.

Clark and Bryant visit Edinburgh College Scotland RDO Alison Clark and Scottish Motor Sports (SMS) National Development Officer Rory Bryant joined forces at the newly-formed Edinburgh College (3 September). A Fresher’s Fair gave the pair the opportunity to engage with students, with a view to setting up a college motor club. With an engineering faculty on campus and automotive courses on offer, there was significant interest in the kart that Saltire Motorsport brought along. Lots of students were also enthused by the possibility of an inter-college/university Autotest league or karting championship. Alison and Rory will soon invite all the interested students to get together and bring their ideas to life.

Moore’s Month Updates from South West RDO Kevin Moore “A problem that seems to hit most car clubs in my region is one of lacking manpower when organising events. Most commonly this is a lack of marshals on the day and in the extreme can put otherwise viable events in jeopardy.

“One of my favourite options is looking to other car clubs and/or associations for assistance. Often other MSA-affiliated clubs nearby can come on-board to help, though with so many events being organised this source of extra manpower can get a little thin on the ground.
HELP SPREAD THE MESSAGE
“However there are over 5,000 enthusiasts’ motor clubs in the UK. Surely these offer a huge potential source of fresh-faced petrolheads, so why not tap up your local MG or Triumph Owners Club the next time you are trying to recruit marshals for an event?
TAKE A MATE:
“Many of these may then join their local MSA motor club. The lesson here is to look around for other local groups of motoring enthusiasts, thus taking the ‘hard sell’ out of the equation. Getting them on board with your own clubs activities can often build in to a long-term association, which not only benefits the organised events but widens the source of potential new members for the club. “Furthermore, I have noticed recently that many club personnel have the required attributes (and inclinations) of MSA Licensed Officials, such as Stewards or Scrutineers. “When discussing the possibilities with likely candidates it has become apparent to me that, whilst they would like to get involved, they don’t know how. The impression I get is that many competitors seem to think that the MSA Officials seen on events come from a special and select source that is beyond their reach. This is far from the case and anyone who is interested can contact their local RDO for more information (or email me on SouthWest@GoMotorsport.net), “As an aside, if you have tried to email me during the last couple of months please try again, as the email address was down but is now back up and running.”
