Racing toward the future

There is palatable new energy at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca since Friends of Laguna Seca embarked on its 55-year Concession Agreement last August. The rising interest casts a promising new light on the historic raceway that modestly began in 1957 on the U.S. Army’s Fort Ord that then progressed into a worldwide destination.

Friends have been moving fast, and they’re just getting started. As the Master Plan takes shape, a number of capital improvement projects have already been completed to elevate the guest experience.

Perhaps the most visible improvements are the enhanced entry landscaping and the renewed scoring trilon. This was a muchneeded upgrade that now features new LED video boards covering the entire structure to enhance signage and leaderboard readability for fans throughout the raceway.

Guests who are enjoying the High Speed Hospitality Suites in the paddock are welcomed into a completely transformed environment with new furnishings, updated restrooms, elegant flooring and modern cabinetry. New materials were adapted to enhance textures and assist with sound mitigation and viewing enjoyment.

Racers and licensees of the raceway

will find that the drainage and run-off repair at Turn 2, Turn 5, and Turn 8 provides a welcome fix, along with the restoration of the Turn 5 driver’s left retaining wall, which had suffered significant erosion damage. Additionally, the new Turn 3 Hospitality Pavilion provides guests with incredible views and delicious catering for corporate guests.

Visitors crossing the iconic pedestrian tire bridge between Turns 3 and 4 will notice modest upgrades and branding from new corporate partner Tire Rack. This path between the bustling race paddock and the revitalized Promenade provides a safe and convenient passageway for fans to enjoy the variety of activities.

Establishing relationships with local businesses has resulted in new food and catering enhancements throughout the raceway. Friends and raceway management believe in supporting area businesses and is working diligently to grow participation during major events.

With Friends of Laguna Seca, the future has never been brighter.

BECOME A FRIEND OF LAGUNA SECA

Friends of Laguna Seca is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to restore, revitalize and reinvent Laguna Seca Recreation Area, home to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

With its signature road course, iconic Corkscrew, storied legacy, and almost mythical location, few international raceways can match the glorious nature of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. However, it has suffered from long-term deferred maintenance and lack of investment. Friends’ capital improvement plan is reversing this trend. As a non-profit, revenue is being reinvested into the facility to ensure it remains a thriving entertainment venue and campground that will be enjoyed by many future generations.

The foundation of Friends of Laguna Seca is its long-term, self-sustaining business plan that brings complete financial independence for the park while elevating the outdoor recreational opportunities to benefit the Monterey County community and global motorsports enthusiasts.

Java House is more than a purveyor of delicious coffees and teas; its team is an enthusiastic supporter of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and this weekend’s Java House Grand Prix of Monterey.

In addition to supporting the Monterey event, Java House is a primary sponsor on Alexander Rossi’s No. 20 and Christian Rasmussen’s No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolets throughout the 2025 season.

“Java House is an ideal new partner, and we greatly appreciate their involvement as title sponsor of the Java House Grand Prix of Monterey,” said Mel Harder, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “For coffee aficionados, we hope you will enjoy their participation this weekend.”

Java House will showcase its products by offering samples of its high-quality coffees and teas. Indiana-based residents are probably already familiar with the unique qualities that set Java House apart, and now it’s Monterey’s turn.

It’s cold brew, not cold coffee

Instead of scorching beans in hot water for a few minutes, Java House takes the time to steep beans in cold water for 12-plus hours. The result is the best tasting coffee, rich & smooth, offered just the way customers like it. Now you can have cold brew hot, cold brew nitro, cold brew latte and many more.

Cold brew coffee pods look like a typical Keurig pod, yet a machine is unnecessary. Just peel and pour into cold or hot water and then enjoy. There are also large-format coffee concentrates available for offices, as well as a new espresso martini mix that is simple and flavorful.

The first Java House Coffee Bar opened in Clay Terrace in Carmel, Indiana May

Welcome to the Java House experience

2019. Since then, Java House has been active in the Indianapolis community, opening more stores and enjoying events including the Indianapolis 500, Carmel Fest, Talbot Street Art Fair, Cars and Coffees, and many more.

Be sure to stop by the friendly Java House baristas offering samples to experience what Hoosiers have been enjoying for the past six years. The full line of Java House products may be found on Amazon or via www.JavaHouse.com.

INDY AUTONOMOUS CHALLENGE DESCENDS ON LAGUNA SECA

held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Thursday, July 24. The race includes a time trial competition of the world’s fastest autonomous race cars piloted by AI driver software developed by university teams from North America, Europe, and Asia.

“Running an autonomous race on the same track and the same weekend as an NTT INDYCAR SERIES event is a powerful testament to how far the IAC and our university teams have advanced the field of AI and autonomy,” said Paul Mitchell, CEO of Indy Autonomous Challenge and its parent company Aidoptation BV. “Bringing this

industry leaders in AI and robotics.”

This will only be the second time IAC has raced on a road course; the first time was at the Monza F1 Circuit in 2023. The AI drivers will be pushed to new limits navigating one of the most technical circuits in the U.S., including the infamous Corkscrew drop.

“Laguna Seca has a long history of supporting technology and innovation, and we are thrilled to welcome the world’s fastest autonomous race cars to the Java House Grand Prix of Monterey,” said Mel Harder, president & general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

“We are excited to host IAC and its global network of university and industry partners to explore piloting their SMART Track technologies and how they can enhance safety and fan engagement.”

Accompanying the autonomous race is the AI & Automation Summit. This invitation-only conference brings together leading experts, innovators, and policymakers to discuss the future of AI and robotics, and their impact on the physical world, including autonomous mobility. The summit includes leading researchers from top engineering universities involved in IAC, global industry trailblazers drawing heavily from Silicon Valley, and government leaders from the U.S. (state and federal), EU countries, Asia, and the Middle East.

EIGHT UNIVERSITY TEAMS ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE AUTONOMOUS RACE

AI Racing Tech University of California, Berkeley; University of Hawai’i; University of California, San Diego; and Carnegie Mellon University (Pennsylvania)

Autonomous Tiger Racing Auburn University

CAST Racer California Institute of Technology

Cavalier Autonomous Racing University of Virginia

IU Luddy Indiana University

KAIST Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (South Korea)

PoliMOVE-MSU Politecnico di Milano (Italy); Michigan State University; and University of Alabama

Purdue AI Racing Purdue University

THE INDY AUTONOMOUS CHALLENGE PROGRAM

A primary goal of the IAC is to advance technology that can speed the commercialization of fully autonomous vehicles and deployments of advanced driver-assistance systems. These enhancements will lead to increased safety and performance in all modes of motorsports and commercial transportation. In addition, the competition is a platform for students to excel in STEM.

The first IAC was held on Oct. 23, 2021 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where 21 universities from nine countries forming nine teams competed for the $1 million grand prize, which was won by TUM Autonomous Motorsport –Technische Universität München (Germany).

ADDRESSING REAL-WORLD ISSUES

Beyond improving safety and vehicle performance, the IAC seeks to help overcome three prominent barriers to automated vehicle (AV) commercialization: Solving “edge case” scenarios –Problems or situations that occur only at an extreme operating parameter, such as avoiding unanticipated obstacles at high speeds while maintaining vehicular control, to ensure safety across all operating environments; Catalyzing new technologies and innovators – Automated vehicles are too expensive for scaled commercial deployment, and automakers and tech companies are seeking sources of new intellectual property and qualified engineers and software developers; Engaging the public to help ensure acceptance and use of AV technologies – Increased experience with and exposure to AVs can help facilitate an understanding of them and their potential.

THE ASTOR CHALLENGE CUP: THE NTT INDYCAR SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP

TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

Raising the Astor Challenge Cup is the goal of each NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver who competes for the championship.

The remarkable trophy was commissioned more than a century ago by Vincent Astor, son of industrialist John Jacob Astor, to be awarded to the winner of the Astor Cup Challenge – a 350-mile race on a 2-mile board track at Sheepshead Bay, New York. This inaugural race was held October 1915 and featured a purse of $50,000, which duplicated that of the Indianapolis 500.

The second and final Astor Cup race in September 1916 was shortened to 250

miles, and the trophy became a memento at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

But in 2011, The Astor Cup returned and has officially been presented to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion driver ever since. The names of all INDYCAR SERIES champions from 1909 (George Robertson; American Automobile Association sanction) to 2024 (Alex Palou; INDYCAR sanction) are laser-etched into the three black granite bases of the sterling silver trophy.

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship driver and team owner each receive a replica, while the Astor Cup is on display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

HYBRID POWER UNIT

In 2024, INDYCAR introduced the 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with hybrid technology as its powerplant. Through meticulous development and collaborative innovation, INDYCAR’s hybrid power unit is enhancing racing action and further the series’ efforts to deliver the most competitive motorsport on the planet.

The power unit features additional horsepower and overtake (“push-topass”) options generating opportunities for additional passing, ultimately giving INDYCAR SERIES drivers more control and options – further amplifying the racing challenge and excitement.

Beginning in November 2022, INDYCAR SERIES engine manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda worked in collaboration on the development of the first-of-its-kind hybrid unit.

The hybrid system is comprised of the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) and Energy Storage System (ESS), which both fit inside the bellhousing, located between the INDYCAR SERIES combustion engine and the gearbox. Multiple strategies for regeneration and deployment have been tested as the power unit builds and transmits energy through the MGU before being saved in the supercapacitor ESS. The additional horsepower is deployed through the same motor generator. Unlike the traditional INDYCAR “push-to-pass” system, the hybrid power unit does not have a restriction on total time used over the course of a race.

PROJECT TIMELINE

Initial on-track testing of hybrid power unit concepts began in October 2022. The combustion engine was initially paired and tested with the hybrid unit on August 16, 2023, at Sebring International Raceway with drivers Scott Dixon (Honda) and Will Power (Chevrolet). Additional testing sessions included ovals at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Milwaukee Mile and World Wide Technology Raceway, road courses at Barber Motorsports Park, Homestead-Miami Speedway, IMS and Road America

NOTEWORTHY

The 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with hybrid technology is a hybrid power unit unique to INDYCAR and developed collaboratively with Chevrolet (Ilmor) and Honda (HRC).

The hybrid assist unit will produce additional horsepower ultimately producing a combined 900 horsepower for INDYCAR SERIES race cars. The INDYCAR hybrid powerplant maintains the fast, loud and authentic sound of INDYCAR SERIES machinery.

The engine package has safety in mind: The hybrid component is low voltage (48V)

The engine does not require on-track “starters” (teams continue to use portable

starters on pit road), so if the car stalls on the track, the driver can quickly restart the car by themselves – avoiding the need for the AMR INDYCAR Safety Team to be deployed.

With the ability to harness, otherwise wasted energy, the hybrid package is part of the greater sustainability program in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES in addition to:

Shell’s 100% Renewable Race Fuel, which made its debut in 2023

Renewable diesel used in the team’s race car transporters

Firestone’s innovative and sustainable alternate race tire with green sidewalls made from guayule rubber

2024 FLASHBACK

FLASHBACK

INDYCAR marked the beginning of Monterey’s summer season with intense racing, live music and plenty of off-track sights that treated fans to a full sensory experience. But it was the masterful Alex Palou whose drive captured most of the attention as he went from pole to the checkered flag for the exciting race win by about 2 seconds over Colton Herta.

To say Palou likes WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is an understatement. In his four starts at Laguna Seca, Palou has won twice and finished no worse than third. “I love Laguna Seca,” Palou shouted during his post-race news conference. “I’d like to race here more often.”

Fans immersed themselves in the ontrack action, fan activities, open paddock and autograph sessions. After Saturday’s qualifying, the party atmosphere continued with visitors and race teams enjoying an energetic performance by rising country star George Birge and Abby Leigh Anderson of the popular Bobby Bones Show on the paddock stage.

For attendees, the INDYCAR race was the ideal kickoff to summer fun.

RECORDS FALL

The racing surface was repaved in 2023 to the delight of most drivers, and chagrin from several who enjoyed the slippery nature of the circuit. Christian Lundgaard clearly fell in the former of enjoying the new high-grip surface. In qualifying, Lundgaard set a new official track record of 1:06.461, thereby eclipsing the 23-year-old record of 1:07.722 held by Helio Castroneves since September 8, 2000. Lundgaard’s average lap speed around the 11-turn, 2.238-mile course was an incredible 121.226 miles per hour.

MEMORABLE MONTEREY MOMENTS

When you think of Laguna Seca, many images and stories come to mind. But for INDYCAR fans, there are a handful that have epic history. Let’s celebrate some of the most memorable moments

THE PASS

In the unlikeliest of moves on the last lap of the Monterey Grand Prix, the final race of the 1996 PPG Indy Car World Series, a hard charging Alex Zanardi was desperately looking for a last gasp groove to overtake race leader Bryan Herta who was skillfully defending his line. With just four turns remaining on the final lap, Zanardi took a gamble and charged into the Corkscrew taking to the inside dirt to complete an unexpected pass to win the race. The move is simply known worldwide as “The Pass.”

WINNING WAYS

The winningest INDYCAR driver at Laguna Seca is Bobby Rahal who captured four consecutive victories to cement his place in history. Rahal’s complete mastery of the road course began by winning in 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987. Recognizing his string of victories, the stretch between Turns 7 and the Corkscrew is named the Rahal Straight.

ARRIVEDERCI TOUR

One of America’s greatest drivers—Mario Andretti— drove his final INDYCAR race at Laguna Seca on October 9, 1994. When the Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey, the final race of the PPG Indy Car World Series won by Paul Tracy, was finished, an emotional post-race celebration ensued complete with commemorative Andretti wine. Consequently, Turn 2 became forever known as the Andretti Hairpin.

TO THE WORLD OF PORSCHE SPRINT CHALLENGE

Step into the fast-paced, adrenaline-charged world of Porsche Sprint Challenge North America & USA West—a premier racing series that delivers an electrifying showcase of speed, precision, and competition. This dynamic championship captures the essence of motorsport excellence, designed to push both skilled drivers and their highperformance Porsche machines to the absolute edge of their capabilities. Whether you’re behind the wheel or watching from the grandstands, Porsche Sprint Challenge is a thrilling celebration of automotive prowess, talent, and passion.

At its core, Porsche Sprint Challenge is a one-make racing series, meaning every competitor drives a Porsche, creating a level playing field where driver skill and team strategy take center stage. This format allows for some of the most exciting and competitive racing in the industry. Since its inception, the series has rapidly become a key fixture in North American motorsport, attracting an impressive mix of rising stars, seasoned professionals, and dedicated enthusiasts.

The series serves as a launchpad for aspiring racers, offering them a unique

opportunity to develop their careers and gain valuable experience in a professional setting. Many drivers use this championship as a stepping stone to higher tiers of global motorsport, such as the Porsche Carrera Cup and even the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. For established racers, the series provides an ideal arena to test their mettle, sharpen their skills, and compete against a field of elite competitors.

One of the unique aspects of Porsche Sprint Challenge North America is its class structure, which ensures fair and thrilling competition. The series features four distinct classes: 992 Pro/Am & 992 Masters competing in a GT3 Cup Car and Cayman Pro/Am & Cayman Masters competing in a GT4 Cayman Clubsport.

This class division is based on both driver experience and vehicle model, ensuring that competitors race against others of similar skill and equipment. It creates an environment where every participant has a shot at victory, and where strategic thinking and technical finesse are just as important as outright speed.

Each season, the series travels to legendary race tracks across North America. Iconic venues such as Road America, Watkins Glen International,

‘ PORSCHE SPRINT CHALLENGE IS A THRILLING CELEBRATION OF AUTOMOTIVE PROWESS, TALENT, AND PASSION’

and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca provide world-class backdrops for the action. These circuits are steeped in racing history and offer a diverse range of challenges—technical corners, sweeping straights, elevation changes, and more. Whether it’s the long backstretch at Road America or the technical Esses at Watkins Glen, each track demands complete focus and total commitment from drivers.

On race weekends, spectators are treated to heart-pounding action as drivers navigate every turn with razor-sharp precision, execute daring overtakes, and push their Porsche race cars to the absolute limit. But beyond the excitement on the track, the series also focuses heavily on development. Porsche Sprint Challenge offers a professional and supportive environment for drivers to grow. Each team has access to expert coaching, engineering advice, and technical support, helping ensure that every competitor gets the most out of their car—and themselves.

The emphasis on driver development and team collaboration fosters a strong community spirit within the paddock. While the competition is fierce, there is also a shared sense of purpose: a passion for racing and a commitment to excellence. Whether you’re a fan of motorsport, a Porsche enthusiast, or simply someone drawn to the thrill of high-speed competition, this series delivers an unforgettable experience on and off the track.

Building on the tremendous success of the North American series, Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) and the United States Auto Club (USAC) expanded their vision with the introduction of the Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West. Launched in 2021, this regional series was designed to bring the excitement and professionalism of Porsche Sprint Challenge to the western half of the continent, offering a more geographically accessible championship for teams based in the western United States and Canada.

‘ BUCKLE UP. THE WORLD OF PORSCHE SPRINT CHALLENGE AWAITS—WHERE EVERY CORNER IS A TEST, EVERY STRAIGHT IS A SPRINT, AND EVERY RACE IS A CHANCE TO CHASE GREATNESS’

Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West mirrors the structure and spirit of its North American counterpart. The six-weekend calendar is packed with intense competition and high-caliber racing, all while reducing the logistical challenges of coast-to-coast travel. This thoughtful structure allows the USA West series to cater to a diverse pool of drivers, from ambitious newcomers looking to build their careers to veteran racers seeking a new challenge. With support from PMNA and USAC, participants benefit from the same professional standards, technical resources, and developmental opportunities that define the larger Porsche racing ecosystem.

The calendar for Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West includes some of the most picturesque and demanding circuits on the continent. Race tracks such as Sonoma Raceway, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, and Utah Motorsports Campus host unforgettable battles and serve as training grounds for developing champions. In addition to its own standalone events, the USA West series also participates in select joint races with the North American series,

992 PRO/AM

allowing teams and drivers to test themselves on an even bigger stage.

These collaborative events—at venues like Circuit of the Americas and Road Atlanta—create a unique atmosphere, combining the talent pools of both series and raising the level of competition. For drivers, it’s an invaluable opportunity to compare themselves with the best from across the continent. For fans, it’s a feast of highperformance racing, featuring larger grids, tighter battles, and even more excitement.

Both Porsche Sprint Challenge North America and USA West are testaments to the enduring legacy and innovation of Porsche Motorsport. These championships blend tradition with technology, individual ambition with team success, and competitive spirit with camaraderie. Whether you’re in the paddock, in the stands, or watching from home, you’ll be part of a community bound by a shared love of performance, precision, and Porsche excellence.

So buckle up. The world of Porsche Sprint Challenge awaits—where every corner is a test, every straight is a sprint, and every race is a chance to chase greatness.

MAKING RACERS

With big grids, Le Mans-style multi-class racing and ample action, the Radical Cup series is a recognized breeding ground for future stars

The success of the series is in part thanks to its accessible and popular machinery. Take the Radical SR3, the basis for the PRO 1340 (1340cc engines) and PRO 1500 (1500cc engines) classes. These cars are equally enjoyed by novice drivers as they are by the likes of Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton and Ryan Hunter Reay– all of which have been thoroughly impressed.

And given their eligibility for everything from track days to SCCA, NASA and SVRA, their preeminence at country club tracks, and their “wings and slicks” GT4 beating performance comes for a fraction of the price, the Radical SR3 is hard to turn down.

Using the opportunity to star in front of INDYCAR this weekend is PRO 1340 front runner Brady Clapham (RySpec). The Canadian has been “Mr. Consistent” this year, but don’t count out the likes of Kenny Naill (GRP) or Dermot Ennis (Ennis Racing) or, for that matter, anyone racing under the CROWN with APEX banner.

Clapham is following in the footsteps of fellow countryman Austin Riley (Racing with Autism), whose own journey is nothing short of inspirational. Riley won the 2022 PRO 1340 championship and is now a front runner in PRO 1500 against the likes of Graham Rahal Performance’s Spencer Schmidt, whose father Sam of course was a famed INDYCAR team owner.

However, with dominating performances, the standout in PRO 1500

so far this year has been Raiden Nicol (PRIMAL), who hopes to follow last year’s champ, Jordan Missig, into INDYNXT.

A big question this weekend will be how the locals stack up, with young Ryan Persing (Cameron Racing) trying to emulate the 2023 title winning performance of his older brother Nick at Laguna Seca. Speaking of brothers, keep an eye out for Californians Arul and Valen Venkatesh too.

But PRO 1500 isn’t just about the young guns. Jack Yang, running for British based Valour Racing, is in the championship hunt and in the lead of the Gold title for those over 30 years of age. He’ll have his hands full with long time Radical racers Ethan Stone (Cameron), Mike Anzaldi (RYNO) and Englishman Andy Lowe (JBR), who like Yang

has now raced Radicals on three continents.

Then there’s the turbo-charged 425bhp SR10, which long time Radical racer Jim Booth (JBR) coined the torque monster. It’s effectively an SR3 on steroids, with all the power and more downforce than GT3 machinery. A twice Platinum class champion is none other than former ALMS champ Jon Field, however this weekend it’s likely going to be a battle between his ONE Motorsport teammate Wayne Williams, Steve Jenks of Group-A and Ben Blander of Team Stradale. It’s no wonder Radical’s mantra is “We Make Racers,” especially considering alumni such as George Kurtz and Bijoy Garg have made it all the way to the top step of Le Mans.
