Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Australian Grand Prix held in Leyburn, the Historic Leyburn Sprints will have Australian legends, classic cars and high octane racing around the streets making it an event not to be missed.

NORTHERN TERRITORY For 12 hours, crews will endure 1000 kms of racing in the popular Sporties 12 Hour Enduro to get a piece of the $18,000 pie that is available. After a thrilling round in 2018, there is a lot to look forward to at this year's event.

Round 4 of CAMS Tasmanian Circuit Racing Championship is scheduled to take place in late August at the Baskerville Raceway.

NEW SOUTH WALES A bumper field are expected to battle it out on the forest roads at the Horizon Apartments Narooma Forest Rally on Saturday 3rd August.

Run by the Brindabella Motor Sport Club, the sixth running of the rally will be using similar roads to last year, but with many now being run in the reverse direction.

REMEMBERING A LEGEND Vale Graham Hoinville OAM

CAMS is saddened to learn of the recent passing of CAMS Award of Merit recipient, Graham Hoinville OAM.

Having a successful career within motor sport as a competitor, sports car designer and constructor, official and administrator spanning more than 60 years, Graham exemplified the spirit of both CAMS and motor sport.

Graham's long-standing affiliation with the sport began in 1950 when he joined the Victorian Amateur Drivers’ Club and took part in his first competitive rally, then known as a trial, in 1951.

In 1952, CAMS founding President Maurice Monk and National Secretary Donald Thomson approached Graham, then a mechanical engineer, to volunteer as a technical advisor for the newly created governing body.

That was just the beginning of Graham’s influence in the sport with his next major achievement coming eight years later, where he devised a set of regulations for touring cars. The regulations eventually came into force for the inaugural Australian Touring Car Championship in 1960 and served as Appendix J for four decades.

Graham sat on many CAMS committees throughout his time in the sport, including acting as Chairman for the inaugural National Technical Committee, serving the Historics Commission for more than 27 years, the National Rules Advisory Committee and the FIA Historic Motor Sport Commission, as well acting as the Honorary Vice-President for the FIA Appendix K Sub Committee.

Graham also spent time as an official throughout his time in motor sport, his highest profile gigs acting as Chief Steward at Bathurst for many years, as well as for the iconic Targa Tasmania up until 1998.

Remarkably, while achieving all of this, Graham also ran a successful hire and rental business and found success in rallying as a co-driver at all levels.

The pair enjoyed a successful career together, claiming a vast array of victories at a state and national level, as well as competing internationally at events such as the 1962 East African Safari Rally and the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon Rally.

It wasn’t just Firth that Graham enjoyed success with, the highly sought after navigator also enjoyed a successful stint with the one-armed Vic Cox, as well as representing Ford Motor Company on many occasions.

In 2011, for his contributions to both the community and motor sport, Graham was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), adding to his CAMS Award of Merit presented in 1972.

The CEC wasn’t the only one of Graham’s critical creations still in use today, with the CAMS log

Most notably, Graham will forever be known as the champion co-driver of the inaugural CAMS Australian Rally Championship alongside Harry Firth.

Graham was also instrumental in the creation of the vital CAMS judicial system, which in turn saw the establishment of the CAMS Eligibility Committee (CEC), a committee in which he chaired for more than 30 years.

“Australian motor sport has lost an iconic administrator, a passionate competitor and a genuinely good person who was well respected and highly regarded among many of the various communities within motor sport.”

CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos paid tribute to Graham’s many contributions.

“Graham was an instrumental figure and one of the cornerstones of motor sport in this country and I was honoured to work with him throughout my time at CAMS,” Papadopoulos said.

Graham and on behalf of CAMS, I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those who worked with him.”

“I know his legacy will continue to live on for many years to come.”

His son Steve also honoured Graham’s life on behalf of the Hoinville family.

"He was crucial to the very existence of CAMS and was one of the most respected people in the motor racing industry in both this country and worldwide,” Steve said.

“He managed a business and held a number of achievements in not only motor racing, but for other passions as well including skiing and contributing to his community. All of which he seemed to do with ease.”

“He sat on the Ambulance Victoria Technical Advisory board as an advisor for many years and his capacity to do things for other people, as well as still manage to carve out a successful career in motor sport, was extraordinary.”

“He was remarkable man, an inspirational friend and a fantastic father to us all.”

Graham is survived by his wife Dorothea, four children Greg, Karen, Jeff and Steve and eight grandchildren.

PLAY A PART IN THE NEWEST F1 EVENT CAMS is seeking suitably qualified CAMS Accredited Officials who wish to be considered to participate in the inaugural 2020 Formula 1 Vietnam Grand Prix in April as Sector Marshals.

Expressions of interest are now open for those wishing to fulfil the role, an integral part of the CAMS International Officials Team.

As previously announced, CAMS will play a significant role in the delivery of the inaugural Vietnam Grand Prix.

CAMS will be selecting a group of 70 officials to act in Chief and Sector Marshal roles at the 2020 event.

Interested persons are required to be available for up to 10 days in April 2020 to assist with pre-event preparations in Vietnam. The event date is still to be confirmed but is anticipated the event will run from 10-12 April, 2020, subject to FIA’s confirmation.

Applicants must hold a current CAMS Officials Licence. Ideally, candidates will hold a Bronze Circuit licence with Sector Marshal experience.

A selection panel will assess each application and selection will be based on the following key criteria: • Experience • Presentation • Professionalism • Leadership qualities • Ability to train others • Ability to act as a mentor • Demonstrated commitment to CAMS training and events All interested Officials must apply through this EOI process to be considered for a role by the Selection Panel.

Return flights, accommodation and meals will be provided whilst in Vietnam to successful applicants.

This Expression of Interest will close on 1 September, 2019.

CAMS Officials who are interested in participating as a general race official for the event should apply directly when the Vietnamese Motorsports Association open applications later this year.

CREATING AN INCLUSIVE CLUB ENVIRONMENT

As female participation continues to grow in Australian motor sport, a communications tool has been developed to help clubs create an encouraging and healthy environment for all members.

Effective marketing can play a key role in increasing membership as a whole, as well as attract commercial support, which is where the Women in Motor Sport - Marketing and Communications Guidelines come into play.

Addressing the major communication tools of the 21st century, the guidelines focus on three different promotion practices: principals and values, marketing, and social media.

From creating respectful principles through strategies to emphasise diversity and how women of all abilities can be part of the sport, to finding the right marketing tools, which depict clubs as an inclusive environment, open to women of all ages and backgrounds.

Just as important for promoting anything is the positive and intelligent use of social media. The guidelines also touch on assisting clubs to express a particular voice, which can create a respectful and inclusive form of communication.

D2BD ENJOYS SUNSHINE EVENT Dare To Be Different (D2BD) has hosted another successful outing in Queensland with 30 young females attending the action-packed day.

Coming from Ashgrove State School, Leichhardt State School and Upper Coomera State College, the young females aged between eight and 12 attended Queensland Raceway and were full of smiles all day.

Like the visit to Erebus Motorsport earlier this year, the students took part in STEM, media and livery workshops, as well as fitness, reaction and pit stop challenges under the guidance of D2BD ambassadors.

Romy Mayer, Bonnie Beard, Emily Duggan and Emma Notarfrancesco, with presenter and ambassador Jessica Yates also dropping in to give a talk about her career to date.

While the visit to Erebus included a special simulator challenge, the Queenslanders were able to get a taste of the real thing, taking part in a special junior karting challenge, which saw the students jump in a kart and complete some laps on track.

The next Dare To Be Different campaign takes place at Go Kart Club of Victoria in Port Melbourne on 20 September.

RICCIARDO’S RACERS ENJOY TWO MORE HOLIDAY RUNS Another two editions of Ricciardo’s Racers have taken place over the most recent school holidays, with Victoria’s Sandown Raceway and Western Australia’s Barbagallo Raceway hosting the popular driver development program.

For Victoria’s level one and two course, Elliot Barbour was joined by three-time CAMS Australian Rally Champion Cody Crocker to run the show, while Karl Reindler guided the eager students in Western Australia with the assistance of BD Soutar-Dawson.

Part of the Western Australia program was 16-year old Kloe West, who posted the third fastest time of the day.

“We’ve learnt new things such as how to control your car when braking and cornering. It’s been a really good experience,” Kloe said.

“I really enjoyed the motorkhana activity where we put together all the things we have learnt.

“Ricciardo’s Racers is actually quite fun and I’d like to do more motor sport. I feel like I understand driving a bit more.”

Kloe’s 14-year-old brother Aaron was also thrilled to take part in what was his first ever experience driving a car.

“My favourite part was learning new things and having a great time. It’s been a great experience. I really recommend it – you’ll enjoy the whole day,” Aaron added.

“The instructors have been great. They are really encouraging – always telling us that we are doing really good, even when we feel like we aren’t.

“It’s been a fantastic day – I loved it. Will definitely be back again.”

Ricciardo’s Racers returns to Victoria for the first of two advanced ‘Level Three’ courses in 2019, with Winton Raceway hosting the event on 31 August.

MOLLOY AWARDED TOP HONOUR After dedicating more than 50 years of his life to motor sport, Peter Molloy has been named as the 2019 Phil Irving Award recipient.

While the award is normally presented at the CAMS Motor Sport Awards, the decision was made to present the award to Molloy who is currently in hospital. CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos made the presentation in July.

In what is considered a highly successful career in the sport, Molloy’s contributions to the motor sport came in the form as an engineer and mentor, as well as the designer and developer of engines and chassis tuning.

It wasn’t just with four wheels where Molloy found success, with the New South Welshman also enjoying positive stints with teams and riders on bikes too.

Some of Molloy’s most notable achievements as an engineer include being one of the important figures behind Neil Alan’s 1970 outright lap record at Bathurst, a record that stood for 32 years, and Warwick Brown’s win at the 1975 New Zealand Grand Prix.

Molloy also left his mark on the Australian Touring Cars Championships, winning multiple titles as a valued member of the Moffat Ford Dealers and Ron Hodgson team.

Australian Motorcycle legend Wayne Gardner’s first major victory came in 1979 at the Castrol 6 Hour Production motorcycle race and Molloy was there working behind the scenes to help Gardner with the historic win.

With such a long career in motor sport, it comes as no surprise that Molloy had his hands in so many different disciplines, as well as finding success in Formula and Touring

Cars, bikes, boats and Sports Cars - a unique aspect of his career.

Papadopoulos said Molloy was a deserving recipient and had contributed so much to the sport.

“It was a great honour to present Peter with the Phil Irving Award in front of his family and friends,” Papadopoulos said.

“It certainly was a memorable moment for all concerned.”

Molloy’s award is named in honour of the remarkable achievements of the late Phil Irving OBE – an outstanding Australian engineer who had an impact on both Australia and the world stage.

The award recognises outstanding skill and achievements by an individual who is devoted to making positive contributions to competitive motor sport.

“I think it will be a tough challenge for everyone.

When the CAMS Australian Rally Championship (ARC) rolls into Victoria’s west at the end of the month, it will have been more than two months since we last got to see Australia’s best rally drivers go head to head.

“Been there twice and won there twice so hopefully we can recreate that.”

With three rounds down and another three to go, the ARC season is heating up as competitors next tackle the Victorian round where current leader Harry Bates won last year.

Taking place in Ballarat on 24-25 August, the Pedders Eureka Rush is the second one-day event for 2019. Crews will take on 120 competitive kilometres across 10 special stages on different roads during the new-look Victorian round.

"I am looking forward to the second of the one-day events," Bates said.

"I think it will be a tough challenge for everyone with the new stages.

"Eureka is a rally I haven’t lost at. Been there twice and won there twice so hopefully we can recreate that."

Placing fourth in Tasmania and sitting in the same position on the overall standings, Luke Anear is keen to get back into his R5 Fiesta.

"Any chance to get more time in the car is good," Anear said.

"I am still coming to terms with it.

Fingers cross we will have some dry roads so we can have some fun."

There is a lot to look forward to for this event, which also acts as a round of the FIA Asian Pacific Rally

Championship, including the popular one-day format and FIA World Rally Championship star Haydon Paddon confirmed to compete.

Doubling his duties on the weekend, Hayden Paddon has been confirmed as the special guest speaker for the momentous evening.

The action gets underway on Saturday evening with a super special stage before heat one continues on Sunday morning. The event’s second heat begins on Sunday afternoon with the Podium to occur around 4:00pm local time.

"It’s an honour to be asked to be a part of the Hall of Fame Dinner," the New Zealander said.

Adding to the significance of the weekend, the Australian Rally Hall of Fame will take place on Friday night at the Ballarat Trotting Club.

Bell will be one of five individuals to be inducted at the dinner, with the five to join the 31 members already part of the Hall of Fame.

GOVERNMENT BACKING FOR EUREKA The Victorian Government and City of Ballarat have both thrown their support behind the upcoming fourth round of the CAMS Australian Rally Championship.

The Pedders Eureka Rush rally event will be held in Ballarat and its surrounds on 24-25 August, with the event promising plenty of motor sport highlights for both competitors and spectators alike.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula said the Victorian Government is proud to have supported this fantastic fun-fuelled motor sport event for Ballarat.

With a Super Special Stage in the Ballarat West Employment Zone on Saturday evening, where crews will tackle a

Ballarat Mayor Samantha McIntosh said the region was delighted to host the national event.

“We are pleased to welcome the CAMS Australian Rally Championship and the Pedders Eureka Rush back to our city. This popular rally adds to the growing range of exciting national events we host on an annual basis,” Cr McIntosh said.

“This year's added spectator element, the Super Special Stage and national media exposure is estimated to return an economic injection of more than $5M into our local community.”

CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca thanked both the Victorian Government and City of Ballarat for their support.

“These types of events are a terrific boost for our regions and we are very pleased and grateful that both the state and local governments have backed this event in 2019,” Arocca said.

“Rallying is an amazing sport to watch up close and witness the skills of drivers and their codrivers through some really tight and technical closed roads.

“The CAMS Australian Rally Championship will certainly be one for Ballarat locals and visitors to the region to enjoy with Australia’s best rally drivers going head-to-head in some very impressive machinery.”

With a large number of competitors, crews, spectators, officials and media set to descend on Ballarat for the rally, the event will certainly provide significant economic benefits to the region.

Pedders Eureka Rush takes place on 24 and 25 August in the City of Ballarat.

NT SUCCESS FOR FUTURE STARS DAY

The North Australian Motor Sport Club (NAMSC) has successfully held its inaugural 'Have a Crack @ the Track' with more than 54 participants attending Hidden Valley Raceway for the event.

The event is aimed at giving motor sport fans the opportunity to get involved behind the wheel of their own road cars in a safe and fun environment to experience a racetrack first hand.

While there was a mixture of experienced drivers, amateurs and first timers, seventime Bathurst champion Jim Richards was on hand mingling with entrants, as well as offering advice to the new participants.

With a number of different cars on display on the Darwin based track, participant Ray Colley was impressed with the inaugural event’s proceedings.

“Not knowing what to expect, we were delighted that somewhere in the NT had an open speed limit, and that we had the chance to actually drive the track that we had also seen the Supercars drivers race,” Colley said.

“There were a lot of locals who drove the track in cars ranging from a 1960 Morris Minor, a Pathfinder, to the latest Mustang and a large range of Japanese and European vehicles.”

NAMSC Vice President Jake Burgess was also thrilled with the event’s participation and response from the attending drivers.

“We are extremely pleased with the success of this event,” Burgess said.

“We have received so much positive feedback, we will certainly be looking to run more of these dedicated come and try events in the future.

“Our main aim of the day was to provide an affordable, fun and friendly avenue for people to experience motor sport by bringing their own car down and having a crack at the Hidden Valley Raceway.”

NAMSC host a range of other motor sport categories including Improved Production, HQ Holden, Commodore Cup and Motorkhanas.

SA EMBRACING NEW ERA OF MOTOR SPORT The South Australian Motor Racing Officials Association (SAMROA) is on the hunt for a new wave of volunteers as South Australian circuit racing enters a new era of motor sport.

Since SAMROA formed in 1978, the state’s only major racetrack was in Mallala - which was the home of South Australia’s state championships and grassroots circuit racing.

Following the opening of The Bend Motorsport Park last year, the state has begun to cement itself as a top destination for the national stage.

The association now provides officials to every circuit meeting in the state, including high profile events such as the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship’s OTR SuperSprint and the Shannons Nationals at

Tailem Bend, the Superloop Adelaide 500 and even the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

While every state contributes to the growing number of officials registered with CAMS, SAMROA president Steve Lewis believes South Australia’s group are up there with the best.

McCLUE WINS IN THE

CAPITAL Ewan McClue has pulled off an incredible victory at the second round of the 2019 DEWALT CAMS Australian SXS Championship in Canberra after winning the round’s Grand Final in dramatic fashion.

Despite picking up two race wins and two second placings throughout the round, McClue trailed leader James Shipp for much of the day.

However when it came to the most important race of the day, McClue called upon his experience in the championship to jump Shipp and pull off the win.

“We were really surprised with the result to be honest,” McClue said.

“We came here just to get some practice ahead of the Ballarat round and we would have been happy just to finish in the Grand Final, not be on the top step.

“I’m happy for James getting his first podium in the championship.”

While Mitch Keyte rounded out the podium, round one runner up Tim Liston took home the SXS Sport victory, despite being unable to have the same impact as the season opener.

“We’re really happy to come away with the SXS Sport win,” Liston said.

The DEWALT CAMS Australian SXS Championship moves down south to Monza Park in Victoria for the third round of the season on 24 August.

“Unfortunately I got knocked out of the Grand Final after one lap but had already won the class so we were happy.”

SXS SEASON RAMPS UP IN BALLARAT The CAMS DEWALT SXS Australian Championship has officially reached its halfway point and after two thrilling rounds, the remaining half looks set to be just as exciting.

First up, the championship heads to Ballarat for the penultimate round and the big news story for the round is the return of off road superstar Toby Price.

Price is no stranger to the championship after competing in two rounds last year and the New South Welshman proved quite the driver as well, claiming a round victory on his debut before steering his #87 CAN-AM to a runner-up finish in the 2018 season finale.

The two-time Dakar Rally winner comes into the fold in interesting times for the championship, as there is only eight points separating the top four drivers in a season that has surprisingly had two completely different podiums.

Remarkably, it’s a fairly new looking top four with the most experienced campaigner being Glen Ackroyd in third place – a position he shares with Polaris pilot Jackson Evans on 110 points.

Another Grand Final appearance for Tim Liston in Canberra saw the round two-runner up continue his push to buck the trend and win the championship in a SXS Sport, as he currently occupies second place outright.

However leading the championship is James Shipp in what could be symbolising the changing of the guards as the youngsters look to replace the veterans. A fourth place in Cessnock followed by his maiden round victory in Canberra sees Shipp leading the summit, as well as being on track for a historic title.

Of course, with a host of big names including Stephen Henry, reigning champion Simon Evans, 2016 runner-up Jarrod Keyte, 2019 Round 2 winner Ewan McClure and Price all set to compete later this month, the penultimate round could make or break the season for many of these drivers.

With four rounds being run in 2019, Shipp could well and truly be in the box seat ahead of October’s final round but then again anything is possible in motor sport.

CENTRENATS CALLING FOR PASSIONATE FANS The Red CentreNATS (RCN) is on the lookout for a number of volunteers to take part in one of Australia’s coolest street cruising car shows.

The event, which is held on Father’s Day weekend, sees passionate motor sport fans from around the country congregate in the red desert of central Australia to display their pride and joys to the public.

From street and show cars to offroad and burnout competition cars, the event gives its fair share of adrenaline pumping action with quarter mile drag racing, motorkhanas, grass driving, burnouts, off-road racing and 4WD specialty courses all making up the busy schedule during the weekend.

Another major bonus of the RCN is that it gives special permits to people with unregistered vehicles, allowing them the chance to drive these cars on the public streets during the event.

With an entrant pass costing just $75, participants get access to every venue across the three days with every competition available to enter and compete in.

For the first time in its history, the Victorian 6 Hour Relay has witnessed a team take out back-to-back titles.

After dominating in 2018, Panorama Mountain Men has claimed their second consecutive 6 Hour relay, beating the 46 other teams in the state regularity event at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

Starting with a 30 second of noise tribute in honour of the late John Mason, the well respected Chief Scrutineer for the relay, the action was soon underway as teams cut as many laps as they could on the iconic track.

As the six man Panorama Mountain Men took home top honours, the four-man team of Black Sheep finished a well-deserved second place, while Cutting Edge, another team made of four drivers, rounded out the podium.

With a healthy crowd watching on, as well as a good turnout of hardworking officials, the day was highly enjoyed by all in attendance, with many already counting down the days until the next event.

INTENSE BATTLES IN A SUPER MONTH For just the second time in 2019, Scott McLaughlin failed to win two races on the trot as Triple Eight did their best to slow down the Kiwi’s domination over the competition.

Following McLaughlin’s win in Townsville’s race one, Shane Van Gisbergen grabbed his second win of the year, before teammate and 2017 champion Jamie Whincup picked up his first win since September last year in race one at Ipswich.

The final race of the Century Batteries Ipswich SuperSprint saw the Championship leader grab his 14th win for 2019 as he closes in on back-to-back titles and Craig Lowndes’ record of 16 wins in a single season.

David Reynolds has endured a hard month, dropping from the top three to sixth, while only 20 points separate van Gisbergen and Chaz Mostert in the battle for third as the latter has been more consistent as opposed to 2018 runner-up’s two race wins.

Queensland Raceway also saw McLaughlin and Mostert secure the 2019 Supercars Manufacturer’s title for Ford, in what was been a sensational debut year for the Ford Mustang.

SUPERCARS RETURN TO AWARD WINNING BEND After a month in the north, the Championship heads to the south for the impressive OTR SuperSprint at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia.

There will be one full month between drinks for Supercars as the season begins to reach the climax of the 2019 season, with teams and drivers now looking to ramp up their preparation to try and secure some valuable points.

Despite a number of drivers showing promise throughout the previous few weeks, time is running out for them to catch the sensational McLaughlin who is certainly on track to go back-to-back.

In last year’s inaugural event at Tailem Bend, it was the Triple Eight team who dominated the field with both Whincup and van Gisbergen each claiming a race victory – the latter's win leapfrogging him over McLaughlin to first on the standings at the time.

Off track, the event was also highly successful, being named the Major Event of the Year at the 2018 South Australian Sport Awards.

With only one stop taking place in August, everything will be on the line for the title contenders.

LUIS LEEDS THE WAY IN FORMULA 4 MASTERCLASS Luis Leeds has been crowned the winner of the 2019 CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship after a stellar year behind the wheel.

Winning all but one round for the year, Leeds was the stand out in 2019, sealing the title at The Bend Motorsport Park in the championship’s penultimate round.

It was an incredible season from Leeds with the Victorian on the podium in every race of the season bar the second race of the first round at Albert Park.

Leeds’ maiden career title also marks the second consecutive victory for AGI Sport after Jayden Ojeda claimed the championship last year.

With his sights firmly set on a seat in the FIA Formula 3 Championship in Europe, Leeds is hoping to use the victory as a stepping-stone, “I’m stoked. I want to progress to FIA Formula 3. I think it ultimately makes sense for the Australian Formula 4 Champion to move up there and progress,” Leeds said.

“I’ve been working hard to achieve this goal for a very long time.”

“Hopefully there’s a few key people in the motor sport industry out there that can support a young driver and take me there.

“I’ve been working hard to achieve this goal for a very long time and I hope that people are paying attention to the work and effort we’re putting in to make this dream a reality.”

Finishing the season in second place was round five winner Lachie Hughes, while last year’s runnerup Ryan Suhle rounded out the podium.

FIRST FOR EVERYTHING IN SHANNONS FIRST 2019 BEND VISIT The Shannons Nationals returned to The Bend Motorsport Park for the first time since the historic inaugural meeting in April last year and once again, the hype surrounding the event did not disappoint.

From dramatic individual races in the carsales TCR Australia Series, which saw three different winners and a number of crashes, to Luis Leeds being crowned as the 2019 CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Champion, there was much to get excited about.

Most notably, the weekend had a number of firsts occur throughout, making the visit once again a historic one.

Staying with Formula 4, the special double round saw two maiden milestones achieved with Leeds securing his first ever career title, while Lachlan Hughes notched up his first ever round win.

The National Sports Sedan Series saw the emergence of a future star as a maiden win in the final race of the weekend to Jordan Caruso saw the youngster beat category legend Tony Ricciardello and reigning champion Steve Tamasi.

There was also a number of firsts for the seasons for teams in the carsales TCR Australia series as both Garth Tander and John Martin secured their first race wins in the new category, as well as etching their cars, Audi and Honda, onto the winners’ list for the first time.

In the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship, Liam Talbot managed to get his sole win for the year and his first for a while alongside Virgin Australia Supercars Championship star Shane van Gisbergen.

SHANNONS HEADS NORTH FOR WINTER HEAT 44 CAMS SPEED READ

One of the biggest round of the 2019 Shannons Nationals is upon us with a mammoth seven categories set to hit the track at Queensland Raceway on 2 – 4 August.

The visit caps off a big fortnight for the Ipswich based track, with the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship competing there the previous weekend.

Featuring a number of regular, returning and first time categories, the event will be non stop all weekend with the highly anticipated Australian Production Car Series’ ‘Fight in the Night’ once again taking centre stage.

PORSCHE MICHELIN GT3 CUP CHALLENGE

All eyes will be on the Production Cars on Saturday night as the glowing brakes, neon lights and spruced up cars take centre stage for the seventh year.

The series reaches its halfway point in Ipswich, bringing with it new drivers and car swaps.

It’s been a couple of months since the one-make category was in action with the series’ third round taking place at the start of June.

Last year, series leaders Beric Lynton and Tim Leahey took out a dramatic win, which set up their outright round win after finishing fourth in the second race.

With a number of the big stars to return for the series’ biggest event for the year, there is much to look forward to as Iain and Grant Sherrin look to make amends for a heartbreaking loss last year.

Despite series leader Will Brown being a mainstay on the podium for most of the year, there isn’t much in it for second place as four drivers find themselves in title contention and a couple of wins away for solidifying their spot on the outright podium.

As it has in every round this year, Qualifying on Saturday morning sets up the first race in the afternoon, with Sunday enjoying two races in succession.

There have been three different winners from the three rounds so far, making it a very even season amongst the top three drivers in Harri Jones, Max Vidau and Aaron Love.

While Jones leads the way as standalone leader, nothing is separating Vidau and Love with both drivers equal second, making this weekend’s round one with a lot riding on it.

SERIES X3 QUEENSLAND One of the most popular series around the country, the Hyundai one-make series is constantly getting full grids and this month, the season reaches its third round.

Surprise leader Cameron Wilson has been solid this year and is enjoying a slender eight point lead over 2016 champion Cameron Bartholomew, while 2017 champion Brock Goblin sits in fifth behind Kyle Evans and Mark Goldspink.

With two rounds down and another three to go, David Barram looks like the man to beat in Queensland after winning four of the six races so far in 2019, his first coming in the Shannons Nationals’ season opener at Sydney Motorsport Park in May.

The National Sports Sedans Series returns to the Shannons Nationals for the second consecutive round and for the final time in 2019.

His biggest competitors come in the form of round one winner Mark Short and reigning champion Jason Makris, who has continued to pile on the pressure this year, without actually grabbing a race win of his own.

The category has been excelling in many avenues this year with record entry lists and an increase in national interest. A strong weekend in Queensland will see the series continue its upwards momentum.

A big weekend in Tailem Bend saw 10-time champion Tony Ricciardello extend his lead over reigning champion Steven Tamasi in the standings, while Jordan Caruso leapfrogged the whole competition into third thanks to his round win, despite posting the least amount of points in round one.

The category’s season has been quite mixed so far and a lot of questions remained unanswered, however Tamasi needs to finish ahead of Ricciardello should he have any chance of defending his title.

Last year, Giblin had a slow start to the season but claimed victory in the corresponding round at Queensland Raceway over eventual champion Frank Mammarella to put himself back in the mix – a win here would do the same for either Giblin, Evans or Goldspink.

IMPROVED PRODUCTION RACING ASSOCIATION There will be Improved Production cars on the menu once again, only this time there is a little bit more spice added, with the category playing for points in their four round season instead of being an invitational round like it was at The Bend.

The series' previous round at Morgan Raceway saw two new drivers take top spot in Steven Jukes and Harrison Cooper, but series leaders Justin Wade and Jason Clements took their battle a step higher after finishing third and fourth respectively.

Barely anything separates Matthew Dwyer and Ewen Johnston at the top of the under 2 Litre class, after Johnston squeezed past Dwyer inside the top 10 at the previous round.

ANOTHER AUSSIE DANIEL JOINS THE F1

Australian Daniel Shields has made history by becoming the first Australian to be drafted to the F1 Esports series.

"It's exactly what everyone here today wanted, all the drivers, so for it to happen - I didn't expect it at all. I am just so happy."

At last month's 2019 F1 New Balance Esports Pro Draft, Shields was one of 10 lucky gamers to be selected to represent a Formula 1 team for the series’ second season, with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport choosing the Australian.

While dominating on the world stage via PC, Shields has also been progressing well on Australian soil, with a semi final placing in the inaugural VSR Showdown round at the Shannons Nationals’ visit to Sydney Motorsport Park last year.

From a starting pool of more than 100,000 aspiring entries, the list was whittled down to just 41 for the Pro Draft, including Shields who eventually became the first ever Australasian candidate to qualify.

The 10 chosen draftees will now head to their respective motor sport homes to begin preparing for the 2019 Formula 1 New Balance Esports Pro Series, which comprises of twelve races contested over four live events and a prize pool $500,000 US dollars.

Qualifying through the DHL 50 Fastest competition earlier this year, the 20-year-old posted the world’s fastest PC lap time on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in the Mercedes W09, earning one of six invitations to the exclusive two-day Pro draft event.

"I'm insanely happy," Shields said post-event.

The first round of the series begins on 11 September.

The 2019 BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship’s season finale is finally here as 55 crews from around the country head to Victoria’s west for the Hindmarsh shire Rainbow Desert Enduro.

The enduro is fast becoming one the hardest events in Australia, if not the hardest, with rough weather over the past two years plaguing the course and making it extremely difficult for competitors.

Ahead of the event’s third running, Speed Read previews the key facts for the season finale.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP It all comes down to this round as two legends of the sport go head to head for ultimate bragging rights.

With only 36 points separating current leader Shannons Rentsch and second placed Mark Burrows, as well as the added bonus of points and-a-half on offer – there is no room for error for either driver if they want to seal the championship.

While all eyes will be on the two front-runners, there are a number of other stories that will entertain fans throughout the weekend.

In outright third place, Steven Graham is the only Sports Lite driver in the top 30 and has continued to defy the odds and pile pressure on the leaders.

A further nine points behind him is Josh Howells, the Tatts Finke Desert Race runner-up has been enjoying an impressive lead up to the event, with a recent victory in the New South Wales state championship.

Rounding out the top five is Nick Jackson, who incredibly leads the SXS Turbo class. The youngster is still considered a rookie of the sport and after pulling off a number of brilliant results in 2019, he could soon build himself as a real future contender for the number one spot.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Shannons Rentsch was crowned champion in last year’s event.

He technically led from start to finish, although it was Mark Burrows who crossed the finish line first with Rentsch not far behind him.

However with competitors having to take a compulsory 30-minute pit stop and Burrows choosing to go the full five laps on the second day without the stop – he had 30 minutes added to his overall time which ultimately put him behind Rentsch.

Despite this, Burrows still had a big enough gap ahead of the next best driver in Beau Robinson, who once again found himself on the podium at an AORC event, but unfortunately not on the top step.

THE SCHEDULE

As is the way with most AORC events, Scrutineering takes place on Friday evening, located on the main street of Rainbow accompanied by a family friendly street festival during the evening.

The action gets underway on Saturday morning with Prologue, before competitors run the first two of seven laps on Saturday afternoon.

Early on Sunday morning, competitors take on the remaining five laps, taking their competitive kilometre total to just over 500 gruelling clicks.

Come late Sunday afternoon a 2019 champion will be crowned.
