Putting car dealers in front of car buyers NATIONALLY

UK car production rose for the fourth consecutive month in May, up 26.9% year on year to 79,046 units.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), manufacturers defied difficult economic conditions to produce 16,762 more units than in the same month last year.

There was double-digit growth for domestic and overseas orders, with volumes for the UK surging by 45.4% to 16,188 units and exports rising 22.9% to 62,858 units. Manufacturers have made 46,927 units so far in 2023, up 14.3% on the same period last year, and a significant 47.6% above that in 2019.

The SMMT said that UK CV production volumes are due to increase further this year, reflecting less turbulent global supply chains and the launch of a new electric van manufacturing plant.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said, “With ongoing growth in demand for British commercial vehicles, particularly from overseas markets, the sector is bucking challenging economic trends. This is good news and puts the UK’s CV producers in a strong position to deliver green growth for the economy and society. We can’t be complacent, however, and must ensure the UK remains a globally competitive location for advanced manufacturing – with measures still needed to tackle our high cost of energy and to guarantee that the UK has smooth and sustainable trading relationships around the world, especially with the EU.”

Meanwhile, combined hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicle volumes were up 95.4% in May to 27,636 units and representing 35% of all cars made in the month.

After the difficult, Covid-constrained supply issues of the last few years, it’s good to see the new car market maintain its upward trend and the fact that growth is, increasing. Whilst this is hugely encouraging, transforming the market nationwide, however, and at an even greater pace means we must increase demand and help any reticent driver overcome any concerns about electric vehicles.

This will require every stakeholder-industry, government, charge point operators and energy companies to play their part, accelerating investment to drive decarbonisation.

Six in ten said they would be more inclined to make the switch of the retail price of electric vehicles was lower – but many still have questions about EV ownership

Three in five drivers say they would be more motivated to make the switch to an electric car – if these vehicles didn’t cost so much, a study has found.

A survey of 2,000 motorists found that 85% are yet to make the switch to electric – and of those, just 15% are “likely” to do so in the next 12 months. Nearly two-thirds (63%) said the top thing holding them back is the retail price of EVs.

But many still have questions about owning an electric vehicle, which they feel they need further clarification on – with four in ten unclear about how long it takes to charge an EV, or whether the batteries last long. The research was commissioned by Fiat to mark the launch of its own electric car grant, Fiat E-Grant – offering £3,000 towards the all-electric 500e and 500e convertible.

Damien Dally, Fiat UK managing director, said: “EV ownership has increased significantly over the last decade – however, demand is starting to plateau, and there is still apprehension among those who’ve yet to go electric.

“Our study shows cost is the biggest stumbling block for consumers, which won’t have been helped by the government Plug-in Car Grant ending 12 months ago.

“We are committed to helping people make the switch, which is why we launched our own grant.’’

The study also revealed a groundswell of support for the government’s pledge that all new cars and vans will be required to be “fully zero emission at the tailpipe” by 2035 – with 45% backing the plan.

But just 21% of all adults think the strategy will be successful – as over half (55%) don’t think the promise will be fulfilled, and 25% are on the fence. Three-quarters feel consumer grants from the government would encourage more drivers to make the switch to electric vehicles. And other areas consumers feel require investment from the government in relation to EVs include charging infrastructure (59%), battery plants in the UK (45%), and tax subsidies (38%).

Meanwhile, 22% believe there should be more money spent on educating as many people as possible on EVs.

Further to this, the research highlighted aspects of electric car ownership which consumers still seem to require further education on. Such questions include “how much range would an EV really need?” (30%), “will charging an EV at home raise my electricity bill?” (27%), “does insurance cost more for EVs?” (26%), and “do all EVs use the same charger?” (23%).

But those who have gone electric appear to have no regrets, as the study found 81% of those who have made the switch consider their decision to be “one of the best” they’ve made.

Damien Dally added: “The research suggests petrol and diesel vehicle users are keen to make the switch to EVs, but there is still plenty of uncertainty. “This underlines why it’s important to incentivise people to make the switch, while educating them on the benefits of going electric.”

David Beckham designs new car collection with Maserati

The former English professional football player, who announced his partnership with the luxury Italian car company in April 2021, has now curated the first edition of Fuoriserie DB Essentials collection.

The 48-year-old said cars were “a big part of his childhood” and family holidays.

Inspired by his love of the classic Trident brand and traditional bespoke men’s tailoring, Beckham re-imagined two classic models.

“It was a big part of my family vacations. I remember that we always used to drive where we went with my sister, that’s why cars are a big part of my childhood,” he said in an interview with French magazine L’Officl.

“I am really interested in cars, like my dad, he used to love cars and he always talked to me about them. But then when I looked forward to buying my own car that’s really when it changed to me.”

The dad-of-four’s fist choice for the new collection was the 1967 Maserati Ghibli coupe, where he matched a tan leather interior with a ‘night interaction’ blue colour for the exterior.

He then selected the 1986 Maserati Quattroporte Royale, where he went for a ‘verde royale’ (dark green) exterior, paired with a brown leather upholstery inside.

Last year The Sun estimated that Beckham could have spent £3 million on cars – reportedly more than 30 cars and motorbikes over the years.

It’s a long way from his fist car – a turquoise 1994 Volkswagen Golf – that he sold in 2015 to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Famously, the first supercar he owned was a Porshe 911 Carrera that he bought in 1997 after he hit the big time at Manchester United.

He and Victoria were often pictured in it together in the early days of their relationship. It was later auctioned off or £171, 400.

Over the years he’s been known to own Jaguars, Ferraris, Range Rovers and a Lamborghini.

But his new collection will be seriously exclusive – with only 51 cars made of the Quattroporte Royal.

“Fuoriserie means ‘custom-built’ in Italian,” said Klaus Busse, head of design of Maserati, and the brand’s luxury clients can “express their personality and passion by creating their very own Maserati”.

Both of Beckham’s designs will only be available on the MC20 super sports car and the new SUV Grecale, which is equipped with 4-cylinder hybrid powertrains – moving the brand closer to its 2025 goal of running on electricity alone.

EXPERIENCED VEHICLE PREPARATION SITE MANAGER/COMPOUND CONTROLLER

Responsibilities will include;

Liase with valeting team to ensure all vehicles remain in pristine condition

Assist with vehicle logistics on site

. Ensuring that the forecourt, showroom and vehicle stock is presented to the very highest standard at all times

Check all new stock arriving on site meets the required quality standards

Assist with controlling key cabinets, issue keys to other sites and supervise the delivery and collection of vehicles across both sites

Provide assistance to the management as required

Government provides £56 million funding boost for EV chargers

Local authorities across the UK will gain funding to hasten the roll-out of public electric vehicle charging points.

The government has announced a major increase in funding to support the roll-out of public electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

A total of £56 million will be made available, with the aim of delivering 2,400 new EV charging points in the near-future.

The money will also help local authorities to plan for thousands more charging devices in the longer term.

The announcement follows analysis earlier this year that showed the UK was lagging behind its target to install 300,000 public electric car charge points by 2030.

Extra EV funding across the UK

The new funding will expand the existing Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) pilot scheme, taking it from three to 16 local authority areas.

Ths includes £1.9 million for Cumbria, £2.5 million for Waltham Forest and a substantial £8.5 million committed to the West Midlands.

In total, £22 million from central government funding will be supported by £17 million from private initiatives. A further £2 million will come from public funds across the various local authorities.

A new £8 million LEVI Capability Fund will help local authorities to put in place the right staff nd systems to plan for EV charging infrastructure.

Helping drivers switch to EVs

As part of the package of measures, the government has also committed £7 million to the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS).

Ths provides funding for local authorities to locate chargers in areas without off-treet parking. Some 3,000 devices have already been installed through ORCS, with a further 10,000 on the way.

Transport minister for technology and decarbonisation, Jesse Norman, said: “ The government is giving local authorities across England additional help today to energise their charge point roll-out plans.

“[Ths] commitment will lead to thousands of new chargers being installed, and plans for tens of thousands extra in due course, so that more people than ever can make the transition to using EVs.”
