Ice sculptor James Tottle will be celebrating his first year in business very soon, opening his Coldrush Ice Art workshop in Ebbw Vale at the beginning of last summer. We recently caught up with the incredibly talented artist to find out more about his incredible ice sculptures. Here’s what he had to say:
How will you be celebrating your one year anniversary?
To celebrate, I’ll be launching a fun social media competition to win an ice sculpture. So be sure to keep an eye out on my pages for more details in the next few weeks.
How has the past twelve months been?
Busy! I’ve been lucky enough to work for a whole host of clients and companies, most notably drinks producers such as AU Vodka, Jagermiester, Monkey Shoulder, and Campari to name but a few.
I’ve also been featured on a few television programmes for Sky, ITV, and S4C too, which is very surreal.
Probably the most relevant measure of success for me is that I got to work from my Ebbw Vale based studio on a bunch of the ice sculptures for the Hyde Park Magic Ice Kingdom, which is the UK’s biggest and most prestigious ice attraction.
Where have your sculptures been displayed - where locally might people recognise your work?
My sculptures are displayed in venues all around the UK, but there’s a few I did in my first year that were a lot more public. For example a giant 3m tall pineapple for AU Vodka that was set up in the middle of Cardiff City Centre for a new product launch - people may recall seeing it, well, you couldn’t really miss it!
What’s been the most challenging thing to make so far?
The pineapple for AU Vodka was probably the most challenging single ice carving, as the sheer size meant I had to make it in sections as it was taller than my workshop roof.
Huge sculptures need to be carved with a technique called dry stacking which basically means that multiple ice parts can’t be wet, or stuck together during the carving process as the whole thing then needs to be taken apart and rebuilt and stuck together on site.
With these carvings, we rely more on the overall weight of the sculpture to hold itself together while carved. So you have to be extra careful as parts can move.
What’s the most requested item you’re asked to make?
Branding is something I do extremely well and I am glad to get a lot of that work for my meticulous precision and attention to detail, so, in my day to day, I make a lot of company logos.
I think the most requested sculptures are numbers for birthdays and anniversaries. I also get a lot of animal sculpture orders too, which suits me right down to the ground, as they are my absolute favourite things to make with ice.
What do your customers say about you?
I’ve had amazing customer feedback in my first year and couldn’t of asked for a better start.
I’ve also had a very warm welcome from the wider ice community, including a newsletter from the main ice tool supplier company announcing Coldrush Ice Art’s arrival - incredibly nice of them!
Ice sculpting is such a niche industry - so it’s great to be able to help each other out on bigger jobs or to refer clients to sculptors that are closer to them as we’re spread out in different parts of the country.

Glittering movie premieres, stars gracing the red carpet and a high-performance vehicle that looks like nothing else: this is the Cannes Film Festival and recently it hosted the world premiere of the BMW XM Mystique Allure.
This one-off creation is based on the first high-performance sports car from BMW M GmbH powered by the M HYBRID drive system.
Blending progressive luxury with extravagant looks, it is inspired by British supermodel Naomi Campbell, was designed using exclusive materials from the world of haute couture and has a unique soundtrack devised in cooperation with film score composer Hans Zimmer.
The BMW XM Mystique Allure is the latest product to be made of the collaboration between BMW and Naomi Campbell. The partnership took its first steps last year with the ‘Dare to be You’ launch campaign for the BMW XM, which puts the confidence to be yourself and go your own way at centre stage.
The 77th Cannes Film Festival was the ideal choice of setting for the world premiere of the BMW XM Mystique Allure. Against the stunning backdrop of the French portside resort, Naomi Campbell presented the one-of-a-kind creation inspired by her to an audience of selected guests, before making her way in the car to the red carpet outside the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
“Witnessing BMW’s vision for the BMW XM Mystique Allure come to life has been truly incredible,” says Naomi.
“I feel deeply honoured to have sparked the inspiration for their first-ever high-fashion show car, which stands as a unique masterpiece in every aspect.”
This is the third year in succession that BMW has stepped up as Official Automotive Partner of the Cannes Film Festival. And it will lay on an exclusive shuttle service of more than 200 vehicles – among them the all-electric BMW i7, BMW iX and BMW i5, and the plugin-hybrid BMW XM – to give participants and guests at the event the experience of locally emission-free premium mobility.
The BMW XM Mystique Allure is the first vehicle in the brand’s history to be designed using materials from the high fashion industry.
This unusual tie-up showcases the BMW XM in a whole new light: expressive, avant-garde – and stylish and luxurious in equal measure.
Inspired by Naomi’s favourite colour, the vehicle’s exterior boasts a deeply saturated ultramarine shade, accentuated by a lustrous matte finish. A contemporary translation of high-fashion materials from luxury textile manufacturers, the design seamlessly brings the inside to the outside, featuring rich velvet and shimmering Frozen metallic sequins casting hues ranging from intense violet to deep ultramarine.
The iridescent surfaces were created with precise handcraftsmanship and a fine eye for detail. They take their cues from the eye-catching geometric forms of the BMW XM and bring a special visual richness to the car’s extrovert aesthetic.
The design of the BMW XM Mystique Allure provides a meeting point for high performance and haute couture, and paints a unique picture of progressive luxury that continues into the interior. All of the surfaces inside the car, including the M Lounge in the rear, are covered in purple velvet.

The bold appearance is complemented by an acoustic character also very much its own. At its heart is a bespoke adaptation of the BMW IconicSounds Electric developed as part of the collaboration between BMW Group Sound Design and film score composer Hans Zimmer.
The driving track created for the Naomi Campbell-inspired one-off projects the supreme confidence of the car’s exterior design onto the soundscape of locally emission-free driving.
In the M HYBRID drive system’s all-electric operating mode, every movement of the accelerator is accompanied by an emotionally engaging sound that authentically represents the car’s outstanding performance and magnetic visual allure.

The Melincourt Nature Reserve is located in a narrow, steep-sided valley, carpeted with Bluebells in the spring. Although this is an easy walk, care is needed when walking along the gently rising path up to the 80ft high falls, which was famously painted by Turner in 1794.
One of the best preserved Iron Works in Wales can be seen on the northern slope of the reserve. The works were opened in 1708 for 100 years of iron production, utilising the flow of the water for power. The high humidity created by the falls provides a perfect environment for ferns in particular, with over 20 species recorded on site.
Wildlife Watching: The delicate Tonbridge Filmy Fen can be found here. Keep an eye on the trees where you have a good chance of seeing Redstart, Pied Flycatcher or Nuthatch in the summer.

New retail director takes over atHaverfordwestOpticians
Specsavers Haverfordwest is thrilled to welcome a new director and partner, whose inspiring career journey and extensive experience in optical care promises a bright future for this multi-award-winning optometry practice. Wayne Jones has been appointed as the new Retail Director, joining forces with Ophthalmic Director, Andy Britton, to lead the team into an exciting new era.
Born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Wayne set his sights on becoming an optometrist at the age of 14. Despite the challenges of dyslexia and through sheer determination and hard work, he qualified as an optometrist in South Africa in 1993. Just a year later, he became a partner in his first optometry practice in Zimbabwe. Under his leadership, this practice grew into the largest group of optometry practices in the country by 2006.
Wayne’s entrepreneurial spirit also led him to explore various other business ventures, including retail, hospitality, architectural design, manufacturing, and farming.
After a severe paragliding accident, he chose to retire from full-time optometry to focus on his recovery, during which he became a Reiki master.
However, his passion for optometry was reignited in 2017 following a significant retinal detachment. This life-changing event inspired him to pursue a master’s degree in clinical optometry at Cardiff University, which he completed with distinction at the age of 50.
With his Welsh heritage and a deep connection to the country, Wayne joined the Haverfordwest store in 2020, and has since been named a finalist for, Optometrist of the Year at the Optometry Wales Awards in 2023.
Reflecting on his new role, Wayne told LifeStyle Wales: “Joining Specsavers has been an incredible, serendipitous journey. Often when customers are looking to have a new kitchen, a certain amount of building work is part of the plan extending to create a bigger space, knocking down a dividing wall to open up two rooms into one, or sometimes opening up the whole of the back of the house to create a more friendly open plan kitchen/living/dining space.
But with this project in a desirable suburb in Cardiff, all the major building work had already been completed, a large extension had been built on the back of the house and the rooms opened up to create a large kitchen/dining/living space for the family to enjoy.
The only change to the previous room layout was to block up a picture window to create another wall for a large breakfast cupboard, something at the top of the client’s wish list. A tall supporting pillar, put in when the house had previously been extended, was not able to be removed so needed to be incorporated into the new kitchen layout. Extending the new island further over gave more worktop and prep space and by painting the pillar the same colour as the island anchored it into the design.
A new French door fridge and freezer was built in to the right of the new range cooker with a matching double door larder on the left creating ample storage space for foodstuff, fresh and dried. A feature shelf above the cooker gives ample opportunity for displaying pretty kitchen items whilst the quartz splash back is both practical and beautiful.
The island features masses of storage along with a white composite sink and Quooker hot tap, a favourite feature of the teenage son, making instant tea and coffee at the turn of the control. Whilst the island is fairly slim, cupboards fitted along the back add extra storage. The new breakfast cupboard also provides a wealth of room for both crockery and glassware, perfect for serving onto the adjacent table. With it’s bi-folding doors allowing complete access to the well proportioned internal oak shelving and a very practical quartz worktop, it’s the perfect place for keeping and using the toaster and mini microwave as well.
In the entrance to the open plan space, two alcoves on either side of the fireplace and log burner, have been turned into a fabulous drinks wall, with industrial black glazed doors and bespoke solid oak wine rack and shelving. They create a real feature in what was previously an under- utilised walk through space, providing a showcase for wines, spirits and glassware.

Snoop really likes affection from anyone who will give it, since he has been in our care has shown good manners around everyone he has met.
We would always advise new dogs are introduced slowly to any visitors in the home environment.
This active little man loves a good adventure, Snoop reacts well to positive training. He is a great contender for training classes.

Albi is a beautiful Jack Russel who sadly arrived in our care as a stray. He has stolen everyone’s heart since arriving.
Albi is approximatley 2-3 years old, he is young active boy who has an old soul waiting to be loved.
Albi is very inquisitive when out exploring, in true terrier style he will sniff out the best smells and be on the look out for fast moving creatures.
He will be the loyalist companion to his humans, he will cuddle up the evenings and explore new surroundings in the day.

We are happy to introduce Albi to resident families who have current neutered dogs and cats.
All introductions will be carried out at the the centre.

Pine Fest, the dynamic and eagerly anticipated indie rock festival launching in North Wales this Summer, is pleased to announce the commencement of its volunteer recruitment drive in preparation for the event taking place at Bodafon Farm, Llandudno, from 30th - 31st August 2024.
As anticipation mounts for the inaugural event, the festival’s founders are calling upon dedicated individuals to join them in their ambitions to truly showcase the region to the world.
Set against the backdrop of the North Wales coastline, Pine Fest has already announced an impressive lineup of renowned musicians, alongside a comedy tent, fairground and locally focused food and drink offering.
Local residents can get involved across a number of key areas including a Green Team, Car Parking Stewards, Entrance Volunteers, Information Booth Team and a VIP Tent Team. As well as being part of something truly special in North Wales, volunteers can also gain valuable experience, particularly beneficial to those who are interested in event management, hospitality or simply love music!
Their participation comes with added benefits, with free festival passes, exclusive merchandise and behind-the-scenes access as a token of the organisers appreciation for their contribution.
For those willing to support and join this first chapter of the Pine Fest journey, training and orientation sessions will be arranged in North Wales, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and expertise to guide festival goers as they enjoy the event this August.

Giovanni Malacrino was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy. At the age of three, he immigrated to Cardiff, Wales, with his father Domenico Malacrino, mother Antonia Malacrino, and sisters Francesca and Tina.
Growing up in Cardiff, Giovanni pursued his education but soon discovered his true passion for culinary arts, learning from his mother and grandmother. He gained valuable experience working at his family’s renowned fish & chip shop, Malacrinos, located in Grangetown, alongside his parents and sisters, Tina and Francesca.
Giovanni began his culinary journey with mentors Executive Chef Vernon Fulkes, Piero Caramella, and Marilyn. He worked in the cruise ship industry under Enrico Rava across America, the Caribbean, and the West Indies.
Returning to solid ground, he partnered with friends Ron and Linda Bird to open The Fox & Hounds restaurant in Colts Neck, New Jersey, specialising in Italian and European cuisine.
Later, he founded his iconic restaurant, Giovanni’s, in the Hayes, celebrating its 40th year. He also expanded his restaurant empire
with venues like The Continental, Giovanni’s in the Bay, Giovanni’s in Park Place, Club Latinos, and Club No.10.
Giovanni is a central figure in Cardiff’s social scene, and is well known for his Italian-speaking staff, authentic Italian wines, and cuisine.
His restaurants are adorned with stories on the walls, including the famous Don Giovanni the mafia man in the window.
Many couples have celebrated milestones at his venues, including many wedding breakfasts and receptions, as well as wedding anniversaries, solidifying his reputation as the cupid of Cardiff.
His restaurants have hosted numerous celebrities too , including Pavarotti, Shirley Bassey, Sir Tom Jones, Sir Gareth Edwards, Danny Donovan, and more.
Giovanni has also appeared in more than 100 TV programs and films, pioneering the first purpose-built cafe quarter concept in the UK in collaboration with Cardiff City Council, police, and fire services.
LifeStyle Wales recently caught up with the popular entrepreneur to find out more about the legacy of his beloved restaurants.
Here’s what he had to say:
Congratulations on reaching 40 years in business, how will you be celebrating this great milestone anniversary?
We are thrilled to announce a series of celebrations to mark this incredible milestone. Over the course of our anniversary, we will be hosting ten exclusive parties, each accommodating 100 guests, with live entertainment at three iconic locations: the Bay, Park Place, and the Hayes.
These venues have been the backdrop for countless magical moments over the past 15,000 days. Despite the years that have passed, my passion for taking care of our customers remains as strong as it was on my very first day.
In addition to our celebratory events, we are excited to unveil a brand new menu at our Bay and Park Place locations.
What can you remember about the opening night in Cardiff - have you always been based in the Welsh capital?
Despite the success we see today, Giovanni’s on the Hayes’ opening night was a slow one. We had only one party of customers, the Hurley family who sat by the window. Apart from that, we were pretty empty. The Hurleys stayed until the restaurant began filling up, coaxing people to come into the restaurant. They were wonderfully caring. To this day, I am extremely grateful for them. They are still great friends of mine and I have the photo of their visit on the restaurant’s wall.
I haven’t always been based in Cardiff - I actually started on cruise ships working in the hospitality suites before purchasing a restaurant in Colts Neck, New Jersey called The Fox and Hounds with business partner Ron Bird at just 22 years old.
What are your most popular dishes and how have the recipes changed over the years - if at all?
Our most popular dishes are Pollo alla Pepe Nero, Matribologna, Spezzatino, Funghi alla Mimi e Coco and our homemade meatballs. These are all recipes that have been passed down from my grandparents and have continued to be a staple on the menu until this day. Naturally recipes change slightly as new ingredients become available but the basis for these particular dishes has not changed in honour of my grandparents.
You now have three Restaurants in the capital, what makes each venue unique?
The Hayes, which is the original restaurant opened in 1983 and has a strong authentic, family, fun and rock & roll feel to it. Park Place was our second restaurant to open, opposite the New Theatre and is a touch more up-market with plenty of daily specials being created by our executive chef. Cardiff Bay opened not long before covid and is going to have more live music and entertainment, Italian style tapas called Cicchetti, large sharing dishes with daily meat and fish specials.
As a family run business, do you have any long serving staff members who have been with you from the start?
Absolutely - Antonia has been with us for 38 years, keeping the Hayes looking spick and span. Vanessa, our head chef, has been cooking for our customers for over 27 years. General manager Gennaro has been at the forefront of the Hayes for 14 years. Ali has also been a part of our kitchen team for 12 years, and there has been many more integral team members that have all contributed to our success.
Of course, the one person that has been by my side since day one is my sister Francesca who still pops in and pulls a shift. If you have a party with us, you can bet she will snap the best photos of you!
Same for your customers, do you have any families that have been dining at your restaurants since the beginning?
As mentioned before, the Hurley family have been dining with us since the opening night and their family continues to do so. We have many familiar faces that come through our doors month after month but every guest that walks into one of our restaurants is just as important as the next and becomes part of the Giovanni’s story.
You’ve met many celebrities over the years, with many photographs adorning the walls of your restaurants, which would you say is your most treasured encounter?
That’s a tough one. I would say either Pavarotti or Tom Jones (who we have looked after many times) - two great singers. However, we have catered for hundreds of celebrities over the years and every picture tells a different story - including some we can’t share!
Over the past four decades you won many awards - what would you say is the secret of your success?
Treating everybody the same way, not knowing why they are dining with us but having the passion to always make them feel better and happier than when they walk in. As well as loving what you do, showing your appreciation and being grateful. Gratitude is the most important thing, without that my team would not have been with me for as long as they all have.
Which is your most coveted award?
Oh, easy. We did You Bet with Matthew Kelly twice (for those who remember). We managed to win two trophies, one for cooking and serving pasta to 20 people in 3.5 minutes and another for doing a banquet for 50 people in just 3 and a half minutes. We have also won many awards for the restaurants including the Booker prize for excellence.
Finally, why should people visit Giovanni’s in Cardiff?
We are the longest established independent Italian family-run restaurant in Wales that prides itself on freshly prepared authentic Italian food. We need the support of Cardiff and our tourists in order to continue competing with all the food giants coming to Cardiff. The support for local independents is what makes Cardiff such a great place to be and my entire team across the three sites are committed to making your experience as enjoyable and as magical as possible.

Always surprisingly simple to make, these meringues are elevated by a swirl of our Halen Môn Salted Caramel Spread.
Paired with whipped cream and caramel stewed bramley apples this is a seasonal treat of a pudding.
Makes approx. 10 mini meringues
Ingredients
• 5 medium egg whites
• 175g sugar
• Halen Môn Salted Caramel sauce
• 20g unsalted butter
• 1 large bramley apple, peeled & cut into 1cm chunks
• 300ml double cream, softly whipped
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 120˚c. Line a couple of baking sheets with baking paper.
2. Whisk the egg whites into stiff peaks. Slowly add the sugar 1 tbsp at a time until all the sugar is fully incorporated and the meringue is thick and glossy.
3. Dollop spoonfuls of the meringue onto the prepped baking paper, 5 to a tray, well-spaced apart.
4. Add a teaspoon of Halen Môn Salted Caramel to the top of each dollop of meringue and swirl the caramel into the meringue with the spoon.
5. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 hours then turn off the oven and leave the meringues in the oven to cool.
6. For the apples, melt the butter in a pan and add the apples. Gently fry for 10-15 mins until soft and slightly caramelised.
7. Add 3 tbsp Halen Môn Salted Caramel to the pan, gently stir and cook together for another 5 minutes until bubbling and delicious.
8. To assemble, dollop the whipped cream on the cooled meringues followed by a dollop of the cooked apple. If you have left, dribble over a little salted caramel from the jar, you might like to loosen with a little hot water to make it dribbling/pouring consistently.
9. Eat immediately.
