PROTECT YOUR PEARLY WHITES
An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but not necessarily the dentist. Did you know that some of the healthier foods you consume can also be disastrous for your gnashers? Yes, that’s right, that apple a day might not always be good for you. Healthy foods can cause erosion to teeth too as it turns out. But there are a few simple ways to avoid it. “Most of us know that chocolate is bad for teeth, due to sugarrelated tooth decay. However, acid erosion is one of the biggest threats to tooth enamel this century and, as the research shows, people are far less aware of how they can best protect teeth from this condition.” said Nutritionist Anita Bean, an expert in acid erosion. So, acid erosion is the issue at hand here. But what on earth is it and is it as bad as it sounds? Acid erosion occurs when acid from certain foods and drinks comes into contact with teeth, temporarily softening the
tooth’s hard enamel surface. When we then brush our teeth, the enamel can be worn away more easily and become thinner over time. It is indeed as bad as it sounds and it can happen to your teeth if you partake in too many acidic foods. Research shows that most of us are, in fact, at risk of developing acid erosion due to our dietary habits. Acid erosion in teeth is mainly caused by acids found in common food and drinks. The majority of people are aware that fizzy drinks could cause damage, but many can be unaware that other drinks usually thought of as healthier options could also cause harm. You may be forgiven for not knowing that, for example, fruit can pose a risk to your teeth, as well as the vinaigrettes often used as salad dressings. And there’s more bad news. Apparently, it’s not just what we eat and drink that can cause problems, but how we eat and drink too. Consuming acidic drinks without a straw, regularly covering food with sauces and
9
dressings, such as acidic balsamic vinegar, are also bad. But before you panic and start to wonder what on earth is safe to eat and drink then, there are a few simple habits you can adopt that means you won’t have to give up your healthy five-a-day just yet: When having an acidic drink, use a straw angled towards the back of the mouth to help keep your teeth protected. - Drink water after eating or drinking anything acidic, this will help to wash the acid away or chew gum to stimulate the production of saliva, which can neutralise the acid. - After an acidic meal, consider eating some enamel-friendly foods such as low-fat cheese or nuts, as this will help to restore the pH balance in your mouth. - After consuming acidic food or drinks, wait at least an hour before brushing your teeth. This hour is when enamel is at its softest and so most at risk. - And finally – visit your dentist regularly, because, in the end, only a dental professional can properly diagnose acid erosion.

Aleighcia Scott Blessed with a powerful yet tender voice, and the ability to inhabit a song that recalls Jamaica’s foundation singers, Aleighcia Scott is one of soulful reggae music’s brightest stars. Born to a Welsh mother and a Jamaican father, she has absorbed the passion and prowess of both nations, becoming an internationally acclaimed artist who lights up studio booths and stages around the world. Raised in Cardiff, Aleighcia remembers her first words as a child were duetting on a song with her father. She grew up with reggae, soul and blues playing in her family home and has been singing on stage since she appeared at Cardiff’s Big Weekend, aged just seven years old. Through raw talent and dedication, Aleighcia built her career online with her own YouTube channel and a live residency at her local reggae venue, the Irie Shack. Soon she was in hot demand as an opening act for visiting artists including Tarrus Riley, Julian Marley, Agent Sasco and Soul II Soul. Now an established headline performer, Aleighcia has toured the UK, tearing down the place at Glastonbury, Latitude and Boomtown festivals. She has also gone back to her Jamaican roots and performed at Kingston’s atmospheric Dub Club, at Big Yard Studio (for BBC 1Xtra) and on the legendary King Jammy’s sound system. In 2022 she made history when she appeared on all female sound system Seduction City, at the return of London’s Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street party. But none of these live appearances would have been possible without the strength of her recordings. Her debut EP for West London’s reggae dynasty Peckings, Forever In Love, found her fresh approach to time-honoured romantic themes fully at home on the vintage rhythms that are the label’s speciality.
Her recent singles, Cry and I Want You, produced by Protoje’s drummer Kongz, went straight to number one in the Apple Reggae Singles Chart. Both were playlisted by BBC Radio Wales, with Cry included on BBC’s 1xtra Dancehall playlist 2021. In 2023, Aleighcia released her debut album, Windrush Baby, a collaboration with renowned sound system selector and producer Rory Stonelove. The album features top session musicians Dean Fraser, Kirk “Kirkledove” Bennett, Franklin “Bubbler” Waul and Donald “Danny Bassie” Dennis. Rory’s previous productions include debut albums that launched Jamaican superstars Jah9 and Samory I – so his investment in Aleighcia’s talent speaks volumes. Throughout her career, Aleighcia has enjoyed strong support from reggae heavyweights David Rodigan and Seani B. She’s also been featured and played by DJ Target, Craig Charles and Tom Robinson – illustrating her music’s broad appeal. And as if being a gifted singer wasn’t enough, Aleighcia has recently branched out into radio and TV presenting herself. She presents her own show on BBC Radio Wales and has appeared on ITV Cymru’s Backstage and Welsh language channel S4C. In yet another historic move, Aleighcia covered the legendary David Rodigan’s BBC1Xtra show, sitting in the hot seat on July 9th 2023. A voice that grabs you by the heart, a unique story, and a soon-to-be classic album ready to drop, make Aleighcia Scott one of those rare artists whose every move feels fresh – yet is likely to be with us musically for a very long time. Ciao, Giovanni Giovanni’s in the Bay redefines Italian dining with a chic and contemporary flair. Our classic dishes are served daily alongside mouthwatering contemporary wines. If, however, you fancy something a little lighter post-theatre then let our tapas menu take centre stage, with supporting acts from our cocktail menu. Mirko Scavello, the big boss in Giovanni’s in the Bay along with head chef Ali and Ivan Bontade in the kitchen. Originally from Sicily they bring an upbeat and modern vibe whilst keeping the authenticity of Giovanni’s alive. Giovanni’s dream was to bring a “little Italy” to Cardiff and this he has done. Mirko tells us his favourite dish to eat is the homemade ravioli (made fresh, daily) whilst Ivan currently loves to cook fresh salmon pasta in a light tomato sauce. Come on down pre and post theatre, we’re opposite the Wales Millenium Centre!

Giovanni’s in Park Place transports diners to the heart of Italy with its warm ambiance, rustic charm and delicious aromas of traditional sauces. It is managed by Michele Ruggiero and award-winning master chef, Giovanni Pane. The pair have previously worked together back in their home town of Sorrento in the highest quality restaurants, as well as Il Giardino, Cardiff. Now they have brought their passion and expertise for food, wine and romance to enhance a true romantic Italian atmosphere in Park Place. Michele notes that his favourite dish to eat is either Pane’s rich lamb ragu or the mixed seafood pasta (he really couldn’t decide!) Chef Pane has always loved cooking, though his favourite dish to create at the moment is Pasta Boscaiola or linguine with fresh lobster.

Equine Relief & Supremacy Show Products 100% natural ingredients products for your horses and dogs • Animal Cruelty Free • Vegan Friendly • Totally Organic “I wanted to have full control of what I was putting on my horse’s skin, which is why I make all of my products from scratch, so I know what goes into each and every bottle. When I saw the amazing results, both aesthetically and medically for my horse I was over the moon and I knew that I needed to share my product with other horse lovers who want the best for their horse’s skin and wellbeing.”
Bianca Welsh - Founder
Why did I start the company? I started developing my products due to my horse having such sensitive skin and having tried endless other products on the market which were not suitable for his coat. I would often need to resort to using baby oil which would aggravate his skin and leave him feeling greasy and unhappy. It was then that I decided to figure out a way to get my horse’s coat and skin looking healthy, not just for the show ring but all year round. After countless hours researching and studying equine skin in addition to juggling work as a hairdresser and being a full time mum I eventually achieved what I had set out to do.
By introducing my products to the market, I was able to provide safe and brilliant products that actually work whilst doing my bit for the environment by offering a ‘refill deal’ which enables loyal customers to get 10% discount with every bottle they return. Customers are also offered free postage to help reduce plastic content to help our future. Anyone who owns a horse will know that they are not a cheap hobby, which is why I offer affordable products to suit every budget. I believe that our prices reflect the amount of effort, care and knowledge that goes into each product and the results speak for themselves!

NATIONAL P ARK R ESORT
Luxury Welsh resort invites families to its festive escape with a sprinkle of eco-magic Bluestone National Park Resort has launched its highly anticipated Christmasland break, running through to 4th January 2024. Beyond the enchanting festivities, this year’s celebration carries a green twist, as the resort showcases its commitment to sustainability.
But unbeknown to guests, the festive displays sprinkling magic across the resort are built from damaged or unwanted materials like drainage pipe offcuts, lampshades, drum kits, pool noodles and broken slides.
The luxury holiday resort is situated within 500 acres of National Coastal Park in the scenic Pembrokeshire countryside and for the second year running has been named in the top 3 of best holiday parks in the UK by Which? Magazine.
Bluestone’s production manager on duty Alison Harris took the transformation lead. Since May, she has been on a quest to unearth hidden gems to begin the festive transition. She said: “The Christmasland transformation is our favourite time of the year. Witnessing the joy on our guests’ faces as they walk into the resort is truly priceless.
Made up of luxury and platinum lodges, cottages and studio apartments, which accommodate between one and 14 guests, Bluestone is the perfect festive break for couples, friends and large families. ‘Christmasland’ is an experience like no other with a full-festive takeover of the resort. On arrival at Bluestone, guests are transported into a world of winter wonderment and magic, greeted by twinkling trees and elves who will hand out a ‘Christmasland Passport’ – a jam-packed itinerary of the festive fun to make the most of during the stay, including a Polar Postal envelope, ready for the all important letter to Santa. All guests will save on three or four night stays with free entry into a host of exciting and magical activities. Other highlights include Claus Christmas Show, an interactive theatre experience, and Santa’s Sleigh ride, a VR experience that offers little ones the chance to become Santa’s helper. Bluestone’s commitment to the holiday spirit extends to a complete resort makeover. The indoor water park has become the “Elf Lagoon” and its indoor adventure play dome underwent a full transformation into “The Snow Globe” to create an enchanting and immersive holiday experience for all.
For the past six months, the dedicated Bluestone team has been refurbishing and painting old Christmas decorations to give them a new lease of life. Waste items from guests have been re-purposed to form structures for wreaths and garlands, while second-hand baubles have been re used as part of the resort’s commitment to a circular economy model to reduce landfill waste.
“Every year, we embrace the spirit of recycling and reusing by re-purposing our festive displays – and you’d be amazed at what can be achieved with an old drum kit, pre-loved baubles, a fresh lick of paint and a sprinkle of creativity.” “We start by re-imagining the decorations that we already have by sprucing them up with paint or reworking them into new displays in our warehouse. This year, we’ve transformed a broken slide from The HIVE into something totally different. There’s always another purpose for things and it’s fulfilling to turn what some might consider ‘rubbish’ into something magical for guests to enjoy.” Every year during the festive period in the UK, there is approximately three million tonnes of extra plastic waste. But while Wales retains its title as the best nation for recycling in Britain and the third best in the world, Bluestone is hoping to inspire more people to preserve the magic of the season by upcycling their unwanted items. When I visited St David’s, I couldn’t believe it when I saw all the bees on display and how much our pupils would love them. After telling the St David’s team about The Hive, they were more than happy to donate their bees and crafts to us and it’s fantastic to have their support.” Helen Morgan, Centre Director of St David’s Cardiff, added: “We loved the idea of The Hive and the facility it provides for school children. It is an absolute pleasure to donate our decorative bees and eco crafts from our Bee the Change campaign where they can be enjoyed in such an inspiring place.”
