Putting car dealers in front of car buyers NATIONALLY

UK new car registrations grew by 26.2% in February as 74,441 new cars joined Britain’s roads, according to the latest fgures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). While February is typically low volume ahead of the March plate change, this year it marked the seventh month of consecutive growth as easing supply chain shortages steered the market closer to pre-pandemic levels, down just -6.5% on the same month in 2020. The month saw almost universal growth across the market, with deliveries to private buyers up 5.8% and those to large feets up 46.2%. Business registrations, which account for a fraction of the market, increased by 0.7%, equivalent to just nine units.

As the new UK car market looks towards a year of double-digit growth, the Spring Budget is an important opportunity to shape Britain’s net zero progress and deliver an equitable transition for all. This should include a long-term plan for charge point investment, aligning VAT on public charging with domestic energy use, and reviewing the Vehicle Excise Duty premium that will unfairly penalise EV buyers switching to this inevitably more expensive technology in the future.

There was also growth in all but two segments, with only registrations of executive and luxury saloon cars falling, by -15.4% and – 6.3% respectively. Minis (up 66.1%), multipurpose vehicles (41.9%) and superminis (37.7%) posted the largest percentage uplifts, with superminis remaining the most popular, accounting for a third (33.1%) of all deliveries.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) recorded the most signifcant growth of all fuel types, up 40.0%, followed by petrol, up 35.8% with a 56.9% market share, while diesel registrations fell by -7.0%. Zero emission capable vehicles, meanwhile, continued their upward trend, with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rising 1.0% and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) posting another strong month, up 18.2% to account for one in six new UK car registrations.

The automotive industry is a vital part of the UK economy and integral to supporting the delivery of the agendas for levelling up, net zero, advancing global Britain, and the plan for growth. Automotive-related manufacturing contributes £67 billion turnover and £14 billion value added to the UK economy, and typically invest around £3 billion each year in R&D.

After seven months of growth, it is no surprise that the UK automotive sector is facing the future with growing confdence and good momentum.

What is the most popular colour for new cars in the UK?

According to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), grey is offcially the nation’s favourite new car ‘colour’ for the ffth year in a row. The latest fgures showed that more than a quarter (25.7%) of UK buyers chose the colour in 2022 for their new car.

In fact, 415,199 grey cars were registered last year – an increase of 1.7%.

Grey was also the top selling colour in every region and every county in the UK, except for the Scottish Borders where blue came out on top. Grey took the second place spot.

The report revealed that 62.5% of new cars in Britain in 2022 were painted in grey, black, or white.

Meanwhile, silver posted just 98,483 units and a 6.1% market share in 2022.

It previously held frst or second place in car buyers’ affections for 12 straight years from 2000 to 2011, meaning that last year was its lowest level in more than two decades.

Red ranked in ffth place and recorded a decline to reach its lowest market share since 2008, at 136,793 units. This accounted for 8.5% of all cars registered.

The SMMT data also highlighted Britain’s least popular new car colours.

These include maroon, pink, and cream – which recorded less than 1% of all registrations last year.

When it comes to more niche colours, orange, yellow, bronze, turquoise and mauve, all posted growth, however, these colours only make up 3.4% of the market share and sold 55,401 units in 2022.

SMMT also revealed that there was a resurgence of the colour green – which reached its highest level of sales in more than 16 years. In fact, sales rose by 74.2% when compared to 2021 – an increase of 13,293 units, meaning more than 31,220 new green cars are now on our roads.

“After choosing from the market’s ever-growing choice of makes, models, powertrains, wheel trims and in-car tech, picking out the perfect paint is an exciting decision to make.

“While the most popular shades remained unchanged for 2022, for those looking to ensure their vehicle stands out from the crowd, there remains a huge variety of colour choices from across the rainbow available to suit every character.”

Government provides £56 million funding boost for EV chargers

Local authorities across the UK will gain funding to hasten the roll-out of public electric vehicle charging points.

The government has announced a major increase in funding to support the roll-out of public electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

A total of £56 million will be made available, with the aim of delivering 2,400 new EV charging points in the near-future.

e money will also help local authorities to plan for thousands more charging devices in the longer term.

e announcement follows analysis earlier this year that showed the UK was lagging behind its target to install 300,000 public electric car charge points by 2030.

Extra EV funding across the UK

e new funding will expand the existing Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) pilot scheme, taking it from three to 16 local authority areas.

is includes £1.9 million for Cumbria, £2.5 million for Waltham Forest and a substantial £8.5 million committed to the West Midlands.

In total, £22 million from central government funding will be supported by £17 million from private initiatives. A further £2 million will come from public funds across the various local authorities. A new £8 million LEVI Capability Fund will help local authorities to put in place the right sta and systems to plan for EV charging infrastructure.

Helping drivers switch to EVs

As part of the package of measures, the government has also committed £7 million to the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS). is provides funding for local authorities to locate chargers in areas without o -street parking. Some 3,000 devices have already been installed through ORCS, with a further 10,000 on the way.

Transport minister for technology and decarbonisation, Jesse Norman, said: “ e government is giving local authorities across England additional help today to energise their charge point roll-out plans. “[ is] commitment will lead to thousands of new chargers being installed, and plans for tens of thousands extra in due course, so that more people than ever can make the transition to using EVs.”
